SUMMARY:David Lunney—Chrome Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Chrome Dreams begins with a sculpture which is based around a sheet of ArtGlass (TM). This completely clear glass acts an invisible platform for a variety of reflective elements. This portable sculpture was brought to a forest in Ballyedmonduff (Dublin Mountains) where it was photographed in a variety of positions. Two of these photographs have been rendered as drawings. These strange and complex drawings are always the goal of this process; in a sense of reverse-engineering the imagery from the initial sculpture. \nDavid Lunney’s artistic practice involves the undertaking of protracted art processes. Typically\, these processes start with the construction of site-specific or portable sculptural works in the Dublin and Wicklow Mountains. These sculptures are generally created less for their inherent value but rather to provide photographic source material for documentary artworks. The resulting documentary artworks can take the form of prints\, drawings or photographs. These images are rendered\, framed and presented in a fashion which intentionally obscures and embellishes the original object and moment that they represent. In these artworks\, it is often the relationship between representational imagery and its surrounding abstract visual information which infers the process and concept behind the work. The works have a self-contained narrative; the concept and the material process are intrinsically linked in the artworks discussion of its provenance. \nIn Chrome Dreams\, which shows new work from late 2017 and early 2018\, Lunney has expanded the complexity of the work\, both in process and execution. This can be seen most clearly in the Things Twice at Drumnabober series and in the new\, eponymous project. Chrome Dreams is an extension of the ongoing Things made for drawing project which uses handheld reflective sculptures\, photography\, drawing and other media to create process-driven artworks about the Dublin Mountains. In addition\, an important influence on this exhibition has been the artist’s work as a picture framer\, which has allowed him to tailor make unique manner of frames and devices. \nUntil April 14

SUMMARY:Japanese Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Japanese Film Festival is the biggest to date and presents an exciting line-up that showcases the best of contemporary Japanese cinema\, with a mix of new work from established directors and first features from inspiring new talent. \nThe packed programme includes the Irish premieres of the crowd-pleasing family drama Close Knit\, the latest from Naoko Ogigami\, whose Rent-a-Catwas a particular favourite with JFFaudiences in 2013; the wickedly humorous At the Terrace\, which sees the aftermath of a dinner party implode as social politeness gives way to revelations and scandal; the probing family drama Dear Etranger; and the mysterious\, haunting Snow Woman the latest adaptation of the iconic story written by the Irish-Greek author Lafcadio Hearn. Following its recent win at the Japan Academy 2018 for Best Film and Best Director\, Irish audiences will also have the opportunity to catch The Third Murder\, which sees the great Hirokazu Kore-eda taking a break from his usual family dramas to deliver a dark legal thriller. \nFor this 10th event the anime selection is particularly strong. As previously announced the Festival is presenting\, for one night only\, exclusive fan preview screenings of Studio Ponoc’s highly anticipated first feature Mary and the Witch’s Flower\, with some screenings already sold-out. The Festival will also host the Irish premiere of acclaimed screenwriter Mari Okada’s directorial debut Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms\, just weeks after its international premiere at the Glasgow Film Festival. 10 years after Masaaki Yuasa debut Mind Game featured in the first Japanese Film Festival in 2008\, it is also fitting that this year’s event will share his latest creations with Irish audiences – Annecy award-winner Lu Over the Wall and The Night Is Short\, Walk On Girl\, which recently won the Best Animated Feature Prize at the Japanese Academy Awards. \nwww.jff.ie \nUntil April 21

SUMMARY:Bráulio Amado
DESCRIPTION:Portugese graphic designer Bráulio Amado is prolific in the game. Having earned creative stripes with Bloomberg Businessweek\, and later at Wieden + Kennedy\, Amado continues to extend his focus with a huge array of posters\, album covers\, videos and editorials. There’s a fluid vibrancy to his style and a stretch to the edges of his capabilities. This solo exhibition of new work should serve as the perfect post-Offset catch-up also. \nUntil April 14

SUMMARY:David Kitt
DESCRIPTION:Our sources tell us it was down to New Jackson\, Talos and Ships when it came to deciding the Choice Music winner last month. Ships won in the end. No other defeated act on the bill had the bounce back of being able to release a new album the following morning though. Kittser’s Yous is his first solo release in nine years and suffused with warmth\, grace and the plucking of heart and guitar strings. Margie Lewis’s violin provides the lamp glow of true love to an exceptional release.

SUMMARY:Toto
DESCRIPTION:As classics go\, Toto’s Africa is up there with the very best. And it rarely goes out of fashion. Last month\, The New Yorker’s Jia Tolentino wrote a Rabbit Holes column entitled: ‘The Overwhelming Emotion of Hearing Toto’s “Africa” Remixed to Sound Like It’s Playing in an Empty Mall’ which references a YouTube video (1m views) of Africa echoing “over a tilted\, pink-tinged photo of an empty eighties-era shopping center—white tiles\, green ferns\, and mirrored windows in a ghostly neon glow.” It is debatable if any other track has brought so much joy to so many people.

SUMMARY:Emil Nolde: Colour is Life
DESCRIPTION:This major exhibition of German Expressionist painter Emil Nolde will comprise over 120 paintings\, drawings\, watercolours and prints spanning his career from his early atmospheric paintings of his homeland right through to the intensely coloured oils\, to his so-called ‘unpainted pictures’ – works done on small pieces of paper during the Third Reich\, when Nolde was branded a ‘degenerate’ artist and forbidden to work as a professional artist. The works on show will also include Nolde’s famous flower and garden paintings\, and his extraordinary religious paintings\, with their mix of spirituality and eroticism. \nUntil June 10

SUMMARY:En Vogue
DESCRIPTION:The ear-grinning glee was plastered on the giddy faces of everyone who caught En Vogue last year. They banged out the bangers of which they have many – Hold On\, My Lovin’\, Don’ Let Go. They\, oddly\, work fine with backing tracks and have enough in their arsenal to work everyone into a classic pop frenzy. On the flipside\, it’s a Monday night which is a bit of a stinger and flogging ‘meet and greets’ for €107.50 is a tad American\, tacky and ‘cheap’.

SUMMARY:Phase Fatale (Ostut Gon)
DESCRIPTION:We have to admit seeing this show billed as a 7pm standalone is somewhat perplexing. And we had a slight giggle when Smock Alley’s PR people called his label Ostut Gon. However\, sniggers and quibbles aside\, it is a Saturday so you can start the night early with the slenderest whiff of Berghain in the Boys School. We’re assuming Smock Alley isn’t rolling through to Monday morning. \nPhase Fatale is the techno project of Berlin-based DJ and producer Hayden Payne originally from New York. He released two EPs in 2016 on Jealous God and presented a live collaboration with Silent Servant during the label’s showcase at Berlin Atonal. In 2017\, he released two albums Redeemer and Anubius. Dark and pulsing.

SUMMARY:Brian Maguire\, War Changes Its Address: The Aleppo Paintings
DESCRIPTION:This new exhibition brings together Brian Maguire’s latest body of work\, resulting from a visit to Syria in 2017. It is shown in the context of earlier work made in response to the refugee crises hitting Europe’s shores as a result of the Syrian conflict. The Aleppo Paintings document the ruined buildings of the city\, offering a visceral and stark insight into the physical consequences of war and the international arms trade that fuels all conflict. \nUntil May 6

SUMMARY:Fake: The Real Deal?
DESCRIPTION:Fake is certainly the word du jour. ‘Fake News’ was named word of the year by Collins for 2017 and the Science Gallery are capitalising on the buzz by applying the idea to their spectrum of interests. “From fake meat to fake emotions\, if faking it gets the job done\, who cares? In both the natural world and human society\, faking\, mimicking and copying can be a reliable strategy for success. When the focus is on how things appear\, a fake may be just as valuable as the real thing. But what about replicating taste\, emotions\, chemical signatures\, facts and trademarks? Have patents\, politics\, and art given copying a bad name? From biomimicry to forged documents\, from scandals to substitutes\, Fake asks when authenticity is essential\, when copying is cool\, and what the boundary is between a fakery faux-pas and a really fantastic Fake.” \nUntil June 3

SUMMARY:MØ
DESCRIPTION:She might only have one album under her belt but Danish singer-songwriter MØ has leveraged the success of No Mythologies to Follow to maximum effect. Of course\, what with Sigrid making the big break through and Robyn bringing out a new album\, there is little time for MØ to rest on her Scandie laurels and expect a hi-energy live show with tracks from last year’s When I Was Young EP as well as bangers such as Lean On. This show is upgraded and re-scheduled from her cancelled Academy date last year.

SUMMARY:DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown (aka Erykah Badu)
DESCRIPTION:Baduizm is 21 years old. Yes\, it’s all of 21 years since Erykah Badu told us that she wanted “a rim shot\, hey\, digi\, digi”. And it still sounds freshly squeezed even if she’s now categorised as ‘The Godmother of Soul’ and mentor to artists like Drake. As part of a series of events around photographer Brian+\, Badu is in town. “She’s regal—but she’s ghetto at the same time\,” said a friend in a New Yorker profile in 2016. We’ll settle for that swagger. \nShe DJs on Saturday night also. \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UnxhKzSwrg
