DESCRIPTION:Punt is a story of gambling culture\, following one man on the slippery slope to rock bottom after a lifetime of small bets\, race meetings\, online gauntlets\, high stakes card games and the unspoken challenges that go with a life of ‘investing’ in chance.\n\n\n\nThe culture of gambling in Ireland is particularly unique\, as a nation we have some of the most slack gambling laws and restrictions in the world.\nSmall town Ireland\, which can be deemed quiet and docile by nature in parts\, has been in recent times subliminally infiltrated by Big Gambling Businesses\, Ponzi Men and Loan Sharks dangling the possibilities of wealth and fortune in front of a fragile-minded psyche that belongs to an emotionally damaged people as they try and replace the lingering losses of emigration\, poverty and lack of faith in church and State with the hope of ‘having a win’. All the while these purveyors of fortune encourage gambling as a normal every day pass time\, whilst slowly rupturing the very fabric of family\, community\, and place.\n\n\n(Runs until July 14)

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition forms part of the UK and Ireland-wide celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the original circus\, established by Philip Astley in London in 1768. Dublin was the first city outside England to which he travelled\, performing and giving riding lessons from 1773. \nThe exhibition\, which showcases the work of well-known Irish artists such as Jack B. Yeats\, Mainie Jellett\, Mary Swanzy\, Harry Kernoff and Martin Gale brings some of the fun of the big top and the history of this inspiring spectacle to the Gallery. An exciting programme of performances\, film screenings\, workshops\, talks and tours has been planned\, including a residency by illustrator Steve Simpson.

DESCRIPTION:From a zine depicting the tale of an unmanned rover sent to Mars\, to exhibits explaining force load variation and hair accessories to combat zero-gravity\, art\, science\, and culture are all respectfully represented and given equal attention in Life at The Edges. It demonstrates how beings cling to life in the most unlikely of places – animals and plants alike – through depictions of the harsh conditions humans brave to explore space and plants attempting to grow in hostile environments. One stand-out piece is by an artist called Skye Morét titled ‘Antarctica: A Chromatic Paradise’\, which highlights the vibrancy and life that exists underneath the sea. Life at The Edges is a delightful balance of information and inspiration\, and a reminder of life’s stubborn persistence across the universe.

A Souvenir and Guide\, a visual guide. \nPublished by Andalus Press\, the book incorporates a wide historic trip around the city from its origins as a Phoenician settlement to the vibrating atmosphere and wide cultural offer it has today. \nMichael B. Barry has exceptional knowledge of Spain and its history. His recent books on this topic include Homage to Al-Andalus\, the Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain and The Alhambra Revealed\, the Remarkable Story of the Kingdom of Granada. His strong interest in history and heritage have lead him to write books such as Victorian Dublin Revealed or The Green Divide: An Illustrated History of the Irish Civil War. \nSpanish journalist Antonio de Linares Rosado\, who keeps a close relationship with Ireland\, will also participate in this event. Nowadays\, Antonio lives in Dublin\, where he works as a Regional Officer in Global Relations Office at Trinity College Dublin. \nThe launch takes place at Instituto Cervantes Dublin.

Watching De La Soul\, who support\, taking to the stage for Momentz will be one of many treats for Albarn’s army. And remember it’s a Saturday show so most folks can kick back without the repercussions of work the next morning.

Still one of the most influential bands of the noughties\, they supported LCD Soundsystem in the Hollywood Bowl earlier this month. And Vice have created a guide to the band which formed at the start of this century! New material to their last release – — Mosquito in 2013 — will be eagerly anticipated. Maps remains one of the most sublime songs of this century.

DESCRIPTION:Capitalism\, Cops\, Psychoanalysis\, and Politics… What has Bladerunner 2049 got to do with Ideology? \n“Cinema is valuable not for its ability to make visible the hidden contours of our reality\, but for its ability to reveal what reality itself obscures – the dimension of fantasy.” – Todd McGowan\, 2012 \nDon’t miss the chance to find out when Todd McGowan\, associate professor of Film Studies at the University of Vermont gives two talks at DCU (School of Nursing\, Room HG22 on Saturday 19th May (2-6pm). Tickets here \nThe event which is entitled “An afternoon with Todd Mc Gowan” is arranged and presented by the organisers of the Irish Psychoanalytic film festival (now in its 9th year\, and hosting none other than the inimitable film\, psychoanalysis\, and politics philosopher Slavoj Žižek at its 10th festival in 2019). This will be the first opportunity to hear Todd McGowan speak in Ireland. Engaging\, witty\, and renowned for being a brilliant speaker\, Todd McGowan is – apart from Žižek – probably the most eminent and prolific writer at the intersections of psychoanalysis and cinema\, and psychoanalysis and politics at work today. At this event there will be the chance to hear Todd speak about psychoanalysis\, film\, and politics\, in two talks\, each of which will be followed by Q&A and discussion. The first of these will be on Paranoia and Populism\, and this will be followed by Between the Capitalist and the Cop – the Path to politics in Blade Runner 2049. \n \nTodd is described as “brilliantly lucid” in his interpretations of film text and psychoanalytic theory; and his books are regarded as “indispensable for anyone interested in the interpretation of films”. He has published over 32 books including The Real Gaze (2007)\, The Impossible David Lynch (2007)\, The Fictional Christopher Nolan (2012)\, Capitalism and Desire:The Psychic Cost of Free Markets (2016)\, and Only a Joke can Save us (2017). \nTogether with Ryan Engley\, Todd runs a podcast called Why Theory? a series which tackles such hot topics as Ideology\, The Oscars\, Freud\, CGI\, The Last Jedi\, and anxiety. SUMMARY:Stories from the Half Light - The films of Peter Hutton
DESCRIPTION:Boston guitarist/composer (Chris Brokaw) and Dublin guitarist/composer (Matthew Nolan) present a selection of work by the experimental filmmaker Peter Hutton (1944-2016). Over a period of 50 years Hutton made a series of short silent films\, often in black and white\, and primarily of landscapes and cities. He likened the films to paintings\, and described watching them as ‘a little like daydreaming’. His concerns about information overload even in the 1970’s were uniquely prescient. Brokaw and Nolan seek to explore the questions raised by these films about how we take in information. The presentation will alternate movies in their original/silent state with ones featuring new live scores for electric guitar and electronics.
