SUMMARY:Circuit Des Yeux
DESCRIPTION:Vocalist\, composer\, and producer Haley Fohr has been Circuit des Yeux since she was eighteen years old. Haley Fohr’s music strikes a unique balance between the personal and universal. As Circuit des Yeux she creates music that embodies the complexity of human emotions\, juxtaposing tenderness and grief\, ecstasy and horror\, using sounds as representations of the emotional spectrum that we all experience. Born in the year of the Dragon in Indiana’s own “Star City” — that’s Lafayette\, IN — she released records regularly over the past decades; four full-length albums\, along with several mini-albums and singles. Meanwhile\, she has played shows everywhere\, touring all the time. She has been based in Chicago since 2012.\n\nWith a backing band of talented musicians (Cooper Crain\, Tyler Damon and Andrew Scott Young) along for the ride\, the community ethos of a full band performance absolutely strengthens the message\, and Haley Fohr’s voice\, a four-octave howling range\, manages to stand taller than one could possibly imagine when witnessed live.\n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hy73R70-L-o\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNfLqCZkFW

SUMMARY:Saké Saturday View
DESCRIPTION:A chance to view Catherina Hearnes’ Japanese inspired ‘Arcadian Views’ and meet the artist. \nARTIST STATEMENT\n“This body of work continues my exploration of time\, place and memory\, the paintings are sited in the ‘designed’ landscape of the garden and visually reference abandoned buildings\, overgrown glasshouses\, follies\, grottos and shell houses. These are dreamy places\, places of escape connecting us backwards in time and inward to the self\, they exist as manifestations of our relationship with the natural world and as monuments to human aspiration\, memory and ultimately mortality. \nInfluenced in part by Wabi Sabi philosophy of ‘beauty in imperfection’ the paintings incorporate loose depictions of natural and manmade elements in asymmetrical and incomplete forms. The process relies on layering and erasure\, juxtaposition of the detailed and the obscure and a combination of painterly control and accident… \n…The imagery in these paintings acts as a compositional device and foil to painterly concerns\, balancing the image with the abstract and material possibilities of a painted surface. The motifs and structures used suggest things that have a ‘presence’ if no particular function\, their purpose seemingly less important than their striking form and placement in the landscape. \nVisits to gardens such as Villa Cimbrone on the Amalfi coast\, La Mortella in Ischia and the Ninfa Gardens south of Rome provided a stimulus for this body of work. The Ninfa Gardens in particular\, created by Gelasio Caetani in the 1920’s encapsulates many of the elements that interest me – sited amid the long-abandoned ruins of a medieval town\, this is a place where reality seem to soften at the edges\, the combination of location\, history\, colour\, texture and scent combine to provide an experience that is simultaneously emotive\, evocative and sensual. Described as a place “where time seems to stand still\,” I found them magical from the outset; possessing a sensibility that combined joyful celebration and intense pathos; it is this sensibility that I explore in my paintings.”

SUMMARY:Last Breath
DESCRIPTION:Gerry Balfe Smyth’s first solo exhibition\, last breath\, is a series of photographs documenting life in the south inner city flat complex St Teresa’s Gardens in Dublin’s liberties area.  The pictures\, inspired by and endeavouring to capture the spirit and resolve of the people in this once-massive public housing project\, built in the nineteen fifties and neglected for generations. \nIn the mid-eighties\, the south inner city heroin epidemic was at its height.  St Theresa’s Gardens flats complex was one of many deprived communities in Dublin that had been flooded with the drug.  Dealers were operating on a level that had not been seen before and neither police nor government was equipped to contain the situation.  Many young lives were wiped out through addiction and families torn apart\, with little or no support from the state. \nOver time\, the residents fought back and the Concerned Parents against Drugs group did a lot to reclaim their community.  Forced evictions of dealers and nightly patrols by the residents were the only way they could begin to address the problem. \nNow with regeneration in its final stages\, a small number of residents remain.  Most of the buildings have been demolished and the occupants moved to different locations around the city.  These people are now dealing with the reality of transitioning into new neighbourhoods and establishing a new identity and sense of belonging. \nThe images were taken over a seven-year period\, before regeneration had begun highlighting the struggle to stay alive\, to be clean\, to endure\, another reminder that social integration and inclusion must be accompanied by economic investment for it to have a chance.  The pictures are the last breath of a vibrant community before it is finally laid to rest. \nUntil May 13

This show is the opening performance of this year’s Dublin Dance Festival. \nRuns until May 6. \nMatinee: Thurs 3 & Sat 5 May\, 2:30pm

Singing is not mandatory but greatly encouraged! \nThe venue is The Rag Trader on Drury St in Dublin’s Creative Quarters. The Rag Trader was a recent nominee for whiskey bar of the year in the Sky Bar Awards and we’re sure you’ll enjoy the cosy setting for this evening of whiskey and music. \nTickets are €25 and can be purchased by clicking the following link \n  \n \nMethod & Madness Pot Still – Irish Distillers – Michael Carr \nThis special Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey has been matured in a combination of ex-oloroso Sherry and ex-Bourbon barrels before being transferred to chestnut casks sourced from the Isére region in France.\nMethod and Madness is the second of it’s batch and reinforces Irish Distillers’ “continued commitment” to experimentation and innovation at the Midleton Distillery. \n  \n \nLambay Whiskey – Small Batch – Calium \nOnly the finest triple distilled whiskey distillates have been hand-selected to perfect Lambay Whiskey Small Batch Blend. A blend of malted barley and grain whiskey\, is triple distilled\, matured in bourbon barrels with a pleasant cognac cask finish. \n\n \nIrish Distillers – Jameson Caskmates IPA Edition – Conor Timmons\nIrish Distillers is Ireland’s leading supplier of spirits and wines and producer of the world’s most well- known and successful Irish Whiskey. Led by Jameson\, their brands are exported to over 130 markets. Jameson Caskmate IPA Edition was finished in barrels that previously held craft IPA beer\, giving this whiskeys it’s light citrus notes and a subtle hint of hop bitterness. \n\n \nLiberties Whiskey – Copper Alley – Alan Callanan\nCopper Alley is a 10 year old single malt that was initially aged in traditional ex-American Bourbon oak before given a finishing period in fine 30 year-old Oloroso sherry barrels. Just 31 sherry casks were chosen for this bottling which is limited in numbers. Copper Alley is in the heart of Dublin city and was once a bustling centre for tradesmen\, craftsmen and whiskey taverns. \n  \n \nQuintessential Brands – Dead Rabbit Whiskey – Liberties Whiskey \nThe Dead Rabbit bar in New York have now launched their own brand of Irish whiskey. Co-founders Sean Muldoon and Jack McGarry have collaborated with Darryl McNally from Dublin Liberties Distillery to launch a five year old blend to mark the bar’s fifth anniversary. Comprised of both malt and grain\, this whiskey was initially matured in ex-Bourbon barrels casks and then finished in virgin oak American casks. \n \nPrizefight – Prizefight Secret Cocktail – Ben Curtis\nPrizefight is a unique Irish whiskey distilled in West Cork Distillery and aged in barrels sourced from Tamworth Distilling New Hampshire\, USA. The rye barrel maturation has added some subtle mint and herb notes whilst giving the whiskey a fresh and lively character. Join us for this whiskey session for the chance to try one of Prizefights delicious secret cocktails. \nIrish Whiskey Trail \nPhone: 00353 85 774 7005 \nEmail: info@TheWhiskeyTrail.ie \n#EatDrinkExplore

SUMMARY:David Lunney—Chrome Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Chrome Dreams begins with a sculpture which is based around a sheet of ArtGlass (TM). This completely clear glass acts an invisible platform for a variety of reflective elements. This portable sculpture was brought to a forest in Ballyedmonduff (Dublin Mountains) where it was photographed in a variety of positions. Two of these photographs have been rendered as drawings. These strange and complex drawings are always the goal of this process; in a sense of reverse-engineering the imagery from the initial sculpture. \nDavid Lunney’s artistic practice involves the undertaking of protracted art processes. Typically\, these processes start with the construction of site-specific or portable sculptural works in the Dublin and Wicklow Mountains. These sculptures are generally created less for their inherent value but rather to provide photographic source material for documentary artworks. The resulting documentary artworks can take the form of prints\, drawings or photographs. These images are rendered\, framed and presented in a fashion which intentionally obscures and embellishes the original object and moment that they represent. In these artworks\, it is often the relationship between representational imagery and its surrounding abstract visual information which infers the process and concept behind the work. The works have a self-contained narrative; the concept and the material process are intrinsically linked in the artworks discussion of its provenance. \nIn Chrome Dreams\, which shows new work from late 2017 and early 2018\, Lunney has expanded the complexity of the work\, both in process and execution. This can be seen most clearly in the Things Twice at Drumnabober series and in the new\, eponymous project. Chrome Dreams is an extension of the ongoing Things made for drawing project which uses handheld reflective sculptures\, photography\, drawing and other media to create process-driven artworks about the Dublin Mountains. In addition\, an important influence on this exhibition has been the artist’s work as a picture framer\, which has allowed him to tailor make unique manner of frames and devices. \nUntil April 14

DESCRIPTION:This year’s Japanese Film Festival is the biggest to date and presents an exciting line-up that showcases the best of contemporary Japanese cinema\, with a mix of new work from established directors and first features from inspiring new talent. \nThe packed programme includes the Irish premieres of the crowd-pleasing family drama Close Knit\, the latest from Naoko Ogigami\, whose Rent-a-Catwas a particular favourite with JFFaudiences in 2013; the wickedly humorous At the Terrace\, which sees the aftermath of a dinner party implode as social politeness gives way to revelations and scandal; the probing family drama Dear Etranger; and the mysterious\, haunting Snow Woman the latest adaptation of the iconic story written by the Irish-Greek author Lafcadio Hearn. Following its recent win at the Japan Academy 2018 for Best Film and Best Director\, Irish audiences will also have the opportunity to catch The Third Murder\, which sees the great Hirokazu Kore-eda taking a break from his usual family dramas to deliver a dark legal thriller. \nFor this 10th event the anime selection is particularly strong. As previously announced the Festival is presenting\, for one night only\, exclusive fan preview screenings of Studio Ponoc’s highly anticipated first feature Mary and the Witch’s Flower\, with some screenings already sold-out. The Festival will also host the Irish premiere of acclaimed screenwriter Mari Okada’s directorial debut Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms\, just weeks after its international premiere at the Glasgow Film Festival. 10 years after Masaaki Yuasa debut Mind Game featured in the first Japanese Film Festival in 2008\, it is also fitting that this year’s event will share his latest creations with Irish audiences – Annecy award-winner Lu Over the Wall and The Night Is Short\, Walk On Girl\, which recently won the Best Animated Feature Prize at the Japanese Academy Awards. \nwww.jff.ie \nUntil April 21

SUMMARY:Bráulio Amado
DESCRIPTION:Portugese graphic designer Bráulio Amado is prolific in the game. Having earned creative stripes with Bloomberg Businessweek\, and later at Wieden + Kennedy\, Amado continues to extend his focus with a huge array of posters\, album covers\, videos and editorials. There’s a fluid vibrancy to his style and a stretch to the edges of his capabilities. This solo exhibition of new work should serve as the perfect post-Offset catch-up also. \nUntil April 14

SUMMARY:David Kitt
DESCRIPTION:Our sources tell us it was down to New Jackson\, Talos and Ships when it came to deciding the Choice Music winner last month. Ships won in the end. No other defeated act on the bill had the bounce back of being able to release a new album the following morning though. Kittser’s Yous is his first solo release in nine years and suffused with warmth\, grace and the plucking of heart and guitar strings. Margie Lewis’s violin provides the lamp glow of true love to an exceptional release.

SUMMARY:Toto
DESCRIPTION:As classics go\, Toto’s Africa is up there with the very best. And it rarely goes out of fashion. Last month\, The New Yorker’s Jia Tolentino wrote a Rabbit Holes column entitled: ‘The Overwhelming Emotion of Hearing Toto’s “Africa” Remixed to Sound Like It’s Playing in an Empty Mall’ which references a YouTube video (1m views) of Africa echoing “over a tilted\, pink-tinged photo of an empty eighties-era shopping center—white tiles\, green ferns\, and mirrored windows in a ghostly neon glow.” It is debatable if any other track has brought so much joy to so many people.
