SUMMARY:Life at the Edges
DESCRIPTION:From a zine depicting the tale of an unmanned rover sent to Mars\, to exhibits explaining force load variation and hair accessories to combat zero-gravity\, art\, science\, and culture are all respectfully represented and given equal attention in Life at The Edges. It demonstrates how beings cling to life in the most unlikely of places – animals and plants alike – through depictions of the harsh conditions humans brave to explore space and plants attempting to grow in hostile environments. One stand-out piece is by an artist called Skye Morét titled ‘Antarctica: A Chromatic Paradise’\, which highlights the vibrancy and life that exists underneath the sea. Life at The Edges is a delightful balance of information and inspiration\, and a reminder of life’s stubborn persistence across the universe.

SUMMARY:Gorillaz
DESCRIPTION:After the tremendous trilogy of Gorillaz\, Demon Days and Plastic Beach\, Gorillaz fell to earth a little with a well reviewed but somewhat muted fan reaction to Humanz last year. Andromeda\, in particular\, is up there with their best. However\, none of this should take away from the inevitable live jamboree of collaborations offset by Jamie Hewlett’s animations. Watching De La Soul\, who support\, taking to the stage for Momentz will be one of many treats for Albarn’s army. And remember it’s a Saturday show so most folks can kick back without the repercussions of work the next morning.

SUMMARY:Beck & Yeah Yeah Yeahs
DESCRIPTION:And so the landslide of big-name gigs you wanna go to begins with this tasty double-bill. Beck is off the back of Colors which\, mixed reviews aside\, still shows he’s got it on tracks such as Wow. And he is a consistently brilliant live performer. More intrigue surrounds the Yeah Yeah Yeahs who have been off the recorded and live radar for some time now. Still one of the most influential bands of the noughties\, they supported LCD Soundsystem in the Hollywood Bowl earlier this month. And Vice have created a guide to the band which formed at the start of this century! New material to their last release – — Mosquito in 2013 — will be eagerly anticipated. Maps remains one of the most sublime songs of this century.

DESCRIPTION:Capitalism\, Cops\, Psychoanalysis\, and Politics… What has Bladerunner 2049 got to do with Ideology? \n“Cinema is valuable not for its ability to make visible the hidden contours of our reality\, but for its ability to reveal what reality itself obscures – the dimension of fantasy.” – Todd McGowan\, 2012 \nDon’t miss the chance to find out when Todd McGowan\, associate professor of Film Studies at the University of Vermont gives two talks at DCU (School of Nursing\, Room HG22 on Saturday 19th May (2-6pm). Engaging\, witty\, and renowned for being a brilliant speaker\, Todd McGowan is – apart from Žižek – probably the most eminent and prolific writer at the intersections of psychoanalysis and cinema\, and psychoanalysis and politics at work today. At this event there will be the chance to hear Todd speak about psychoanalysis\, film\, and politics\, in two talks\, each of which will be followed by Q&A and discussion. The first of these will be on Paranoia and Populism\, and this will be followed by Between the Capitalist and the Cop – the Path to politics in Blade Runner 2049. \n \nTodd is described as “brilliantly lucid” in his interpretations of film text and psychoanalytic theory; and his books are regarded as “indispensable for anyone interested in the interpretation of films”. He has published over 32 books including The Real Gaze (2007)\, The Impossible David Lynch (2007)\, The Fictional Christopher Nolan (2012)\, Capitalism and Desire:The Psychic Cost of Free Markets (2016)\, and Only a Joke can Save us (2017). \nTogether with Ryan Engley\, Todd runs a podcast called Why Theory? a series which tackles such hot topics as Ideology\, The Oscars\, Freud\, CGI\, The Last Jedi\, and anxiety. Its film theory Jim but not as we know it! \nHere’s the link to episode 2 of the Podcast series to get a flavour of what to expect from Todd. \nhttps://player.fm/series/why-theory/ep-2-blade-runner-2049 \nIf you’re left feeling hungry for more of Todd\, or more on psychoanalysis and film\, Todd McGowan and two of the organisers of this event Olga Cox Cameron and Carol Owens will be speaking at the Freud/Lynch Behind the Curtain extravaganza which is a 2 day conference exploring the cinema of David Lynch through a psychoanalytic lens in London the following weekend (26-27th May). \nMore info and tickets here

SUMMARY:Petria Linehan Pop-Up
DESCRIPTION:Petria creates an ever-growing collection of garments inspired by the Irish landscape and the style and stories of the past. Her work is based around the values she holds in everyday life – the idea that less is more\, and that investing in quality and authentic design will enrich the daily life of an individual. \nBorn and raised by the sea in Ireland\, Petria now lives with her family in the Hudson valley\, New York. She chooses to work with high quality fabrics that recall home\, enabling her to maintain a close connection to the rich heritage of craft in Ireland and the UK. In particular\, Donegal tweed\, Irish linen\, Scottish cashmere and English ventile cotton – fabrics that are steeped in tradition\, hard-wearing and long-lasting. Each garment is carefully produced from a small factory in New York City and the knitwear is made in Ireland. \nRespect for the people she works with\, her customers and the environment are just as important as the products themselves. The shapes are simple\, classic\, modern\, comfortable and relaxed – seasonless pieces that become foundational objects in your life\, reflecting the plain beauty of well made things\, to be worn and loved for decades to come. \nAlso Saturday: 10am-6pm \n \n

SUMMARY:The Rolling Stones
DESCRIPTION:These Stones have gathered as much moss as is humanly possible at this stage of their lives with a combined age of close to 300. And it’s been decades since they released any music anyone cared about. However\, their heyday hits are bona fide and this is ultimately what the fans want. Jagger still has the hips and Wood has the licks. Gimme Shelter\, Paint It\, Black\, Sympathy For The Devil\, Wild Horses — their cannon of classics makes them a must see once in your lifetime\, at least.

SUMMARY:Stories from the Half Light - The films of Peter Hutton
DESCRIPTION:Boston guitarist/composer (Chris Brokaw) and Dublin guitarist/composer (Matthew Nolan) present a selection of work by the experimental filmmaker Peter Hutton (1944-2016). Over a period of 50 years Hutton made a series of short silent films\, often in black and white\, and primarily of landscapes and cities. He likened the films to paintings\, and described watching them as ‘a little like daydreaming’. His concerns about information overload even in the 1970’s were uniquely prescient. Brokaw and Nolan seek to explore the questions raised by these films about how we take in information. The presentation will alternate movies in their original/silent state with ones featuring new live scores for electric guitar and electronics.

SUMMARY:Circuit Des Yeux
DESCRIPTION:Vocalist\, composer\, and producer Haley Fohr has been Circuit des Yeux since she was eighteen years old. Haley Fohr’s music strikes a unique balance between the personal and universal. As Circuit des Yeux she creates music that embodies the complexity of human emotions\, juxtaposing tenderness and grief\, ecstasy and horror\, using sounds as representations of the emotional spectrum that we all experience. Born in the year of the Dragon in Indiana’s own “Star City” — that’s Lafayette\, IN — she released records regularly over the past decades; four full-length albums\, along with several mini-albums and singles. Meanwhile\, she has played shows everywhere\, touring all the time. She has been based in Chicago since 2012.\n\nWith a backing band of talented musicians (Cooper Crain\, Tyler Damon and Andrew Scott Young) along for the ride\, the community ethos of a full band performance absolutely strengthens the message\, and Haley Fohr’s voice\, a four-octave howling range\, manages to stand taller than one could possibly imagine when witnessed live.\n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hy73R70-L-o\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNfLqCZkFW

SUMMARY:Saké Saturday View
DESCRIPTION:A chance to view Catherina Hearnes’ Japanese inspired ‘Arcadian Views’ and meet the artist. \nARTIST STATEMENT\n“This body of work continues my exploration of time\, place and memory\, the paintings are sited in the ‘designed’ landscape of the garden and visually reference abandoned buildings\, overgrown glasshouses\, follies\, grottos and shell houses. These are dreamy places\, places of escape connecting us backwards in time and inward to the self\, they exist as manifestations of our relationship with the natural world and as monuments to human aspiration\, memory and ultimately mortality. \nInfluenced in part by Wabi Sabi philosophy of ‘beauty in imperfection’ the paintings incorporate loose depictions of natural and manmade elements in asymmetrical and incomplete forms. The process relies on layering and erasure\, juxtaposition of the detailed and the obscure and a combination of painterly control and accident… \n…The imagery in these paintings acts as a compositional device and foil to painterly concerns\, balancing the image with the abstract and material possibilities of a painted surface. The motifs and structures used suggest things that have a ‘presence’ if no particular function\, their purpose seemingly less important than their striking form and placement in the landscape. \nVisits to gardens such as Villa Cimbrone on the Amalfi coast\, La Mortella in Ischia and the Ninfa Gardens south of Rome provided a stimulus for this body of work. The Ninfa Gardens in particular\, created by Gelasio Caetani in the 1920’s encapsulates many of the elements that interest me – sited amid the long-abandoned ruins of a medieval town\, this is a place where reality seem to soften at the edges\, the combination of location\, history\, colour\, texture and scent combine to provide an experience that is simultaneously emotive\, evocative and sensual. Described as a place “where time seems to stand still\,” I found them magical from the outset; possessing a sensibility that combined joyful celebration and intense pathos; it is this sensibility that I explore in my paintings.”

SUMMARY:Last Breath
DESCRIPTION:Gerry Balfe Smyth’s first solo exhibition\, last breath\, is a series of photographs documenting life in the south inner city flat complex St Teresa’s Gardens in Dublin’s liberties area.  The pictures\, inspired by and endeavouring to capture the spirit and resolve of the people in this once-massive public housing project\, built in the nineteen fifties and neglected for generations. \nIn the mid-eighties\, the south inner city heroin epidemic was at its height.  St Theresa’s Gardens flats complex was one of many deprived communities in Dublin that had been flooded with the drug.  Dealers were operating on a level that had not been seen before and neither police nor government was equipped to contain the situation.  Many young lives were wiped out through addiction and families torn apart\, with little or no support from the state. \nOver time\, the residents fought back and the Concerned Parents against Drugs group did a lot to reclaim their community.  Forced evictions of dealers and nightly patrols by the residents were the only way they could begin to address the problem. \nNow with regeneration in its final stages\, a small number of residents remain.  Most of the buildings have been demolished and the occupants moved to different locations around the city.  These people are now dealing with the reality of transitioning into new neighbourhoods and establishing a new identity and sense of belonging. \nThe images were taken over a seven-year period\, before regeneration had begun highlighting the struggle to stay alive\, to be clean\, to endure\, another reminder that social integration and inclusion must be accompanied by economic investment for it to have a chance.  The pictures are the last breath of a vibrant community before it is finally laid to rest. \nUntil May 13
