SUMMARY:Come on Home
DESCRIPTION:This new work by Philip McMahon (Town is Dead\, RIOT) is billed as an exploration of “faith\, family\, place and desire”. Michael hasn’t been home in almost twenty years. Having been kicked out of the seminary and exiled from his family home\, he found himself in London\, by accident rather than design. But now\, the death of his mother sees him back in the small town where he grew up. The place that chewed him up and spat him out. \nReunited with his two brothers\, their partners and the local clergy\, there are questions that want answering and old scores that need laying to rest. Where do you find home\, when your family and faith have abandoned you? An Irish funeral brings out the best and worst in people\, and a long night of truths lies ahead. Directed by Rachel O’Riordan\, Come on Home features a stalwart cast including Ian Lloyd Anderson\, Declan Conlon and Kathy Rose O’Brien. \nUntil August 4

SUMMARY:Tremble Tremble
DESCRIPTION:Tremble Tremble\, the work of Jesse Jones\, creates a discourse around feminism and the role of women. Jones’ work stems from a rising social movement in Ireland which calls for a change to the outdated relationship between church and state. Jones began by researching how laws and their resulting mindsets can be passed down through generations. This work is particularly of relevance today in this new post-8th-amendment Ireland. In conjunction with this event Project Arts Centre will run a series of artist talks with Jesse Jones\, details of which can be found on their website. \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Raw Portraits
DESCRIPTION:We all experience injuries through age\, illness and our working lives: emotional and physical; through our spirit and skin. This exploration becomes particularly poignant for the professional dancer. At what point do we expose these injuries as part of our being? Give in to them? Embrace them?  \nThis work is a continuation of Between Spirit and Skin (2016). It was originally created in response to Ailish Claffey’s experience as dancer in residence through the National Centre for Arts and Health\, and expanded in collaboration with Cathy Coughlan\, through digital media with this series of intimate film studies that celebrate instability and uncertainty. \nOpening reception – July 5 (6.30pm) \nRuns until July 7

SUMMARY:Copperface Jacks - The Musical
DESCRIPTION:We’d have our reservations and the fear of cringe if this musical were in the hands of anyone other than Paul Howard. However\, the creator of Ross O’Carroll-Kelly and Keano is an adept hand at wrinkling humour out of the various tribes in our city.  Billed as “Moulin Rouge…with slow sets” in the home of the hook-up\, it is a love story set on the eve of a Dublin and Kerry All-Ireland Final\, when a sweet Kerry girl\, who’s moved to the big smoke for her dream job in the VHI\, ends up falling head over her flat-shoes for a true blue Dublin team member. Tourists who thought they were going to Riverdance may be somewhat bamboozled. \nRuns until August 12

SUMMARY:Punt
DESCRIPTION:Punt is a story of gambling culture\, following one man on the slippery slope to rock bottom after a lifetime of small bets\, race meetings\, online gauntlets\, high stakes card games and the unspoken challenges that go with a life of ‘investing’ in chance.\n\n\n\nThe culture of gambling in Ireland is particularly unique\, as a nation we have some of the most slack gambling laws and restrictions in the world.\nSmall town Ireland\, which can be deemed quiet and docile by nature in parts\, has been in recent times subliminally infiltrated by Big Gambling Businesses\, Ponzi Men and Loan Sharks dangling the possibilities of wealth and fortune in front of a fragile-minded psyche that belongs to an emotionally damaged people as they try and replace the lingering losses of emigration\, poverty and lack of faith in church and State with the hope of ‘having a win’. All the while these purveyors of fortune encourage gambling as a normal every day pass time\, whilst slowly rupturing the very fabric of family\, community\, and place.\n\n\n(Runs until July 14)

SUMMARY:iffy
DESCRIPTION:iffy is a brand new film festival celebrating something little and great. \nShort films pick us out of our seats and drop us into another world. With only our wits\, we have to work out the rules of this new place. We get a story with nothing left to cut. \nIt demands attention. A good short asks a question and doesn’t let the audience off the hook with an answer. It demands to be thought about\, discussed and argued over. Which we’ll do when we retire to a nearby pub to digest\, dissect and discuss post-screening. \n

SUMMARY:Life at the Edges
DESCRIPTION:From a zine depicting the tale of an unmanned rover sent to Mars\, to exhibits explaining force load variation and hair accessories to combat zero-gravity\, art\, science\, and culture are all respectfully represented and given equal attention in Life at The Edges. It demonstrates how beings cling to life in the most unlikely of places – animals and plants alike – through depictions of the harsh conditions humans brave to explore space and plants attempting to grow in hostile environments. One stand-out piece is by an artist called Skye Morét titled ‘Antarctica: A Chromatic Paradise’\, which highlights the vibrancy and life that exists underneath the sea. Life at The Edges is a delightful balance of information and inspiration\, and a reminder of life’s stubborn persistence across the universe.
