SUMMARY:Mitski
DESCRIPTION:The release of her fifth studio album Be The Cowboy sees the Japanese-American artist scale giddy new heights. Its lead single Nobody has already blown up with over 2.5m plays on Spotify\, and sets the lovelorn tone of the release. “For this new record\,” she says\, “I experimented in narrative and fiction.” Right through to its closing track Two Slow Dancers\, Mitski has exquisitely bottled emotions and sentiments which will ring true for her growing fanbase.

SUMMARY:Mulatu Astatke
DESCRIPTION:Mulatu Astatke (born 1943) is an Ethiopian musician and arranger best known as the father of Ethio-jazz. Born in the western Ethiopian city of Jimma\, Mulatu trained in London\, New York City\, and Boston where he combined his jazz and Latin music interests with traditional Ethiopian music and became the first African student to enroll at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music from where he received an honorary degree in 2012. Astatke led his band while playing vibraphone and conga drums – instruments that he introduced into Ethiopian popular music – among other percussion instruments\, keyboards and organ. \n \nHis albums focus primarily on instrumental music\, and Astatke appears on all three known albums of instrumentals that were released during Ethiopia’s Golden ’70s. He collaborated with many notable artists in both countries\, arranging and playing on recordings by Mahmoud Ahmed\, and appearing as a special guest with Duke Ellington during a tour of Ethiopia in 1973. His Western audience expanded even further when the 2005 Jim Jarmusch film Broken Flowers featured seven of Astatke’s songs. Hip hop artists have also sampled Astatke’s songs extensively\, for example in the works of Nas\, Damian Marley\, Kanye West\, Cut Chemist\, and Knaan. He toured with US band Either/ Orchestra in 2006 and in 2008 recorded an album with the Heliocentrics and completed a Radcliffe Institute Fellowship at Harvard University\, where he worked on modernizations of traditional Ethiopian instruments and premiered a portion of a new opera\, The Yared Opera. \n*VENUE CHANGE FROM VICAR STREET*\nAll Ticketmaster tickets are still valid for this event\nPLEASE NOTE that all tickets are now General Admission. Ticket purchase does not guarantee a seat at The Sugar Club. Seating at The Sugar Club is limited and on a first come\, first served basis.\nLimited tickets available from www.sugarclubtickets.com

SUMMARY:Peter Broderick
DESCRIPTION:Peter Broderick is scandalously underrated. He’s not the first musician to fall foul of unfair obscurity\, but it still baffles us how the wind which set sail to his Erased Tapes labelmates — Nils Frahm and Ólafur Arnalds — has blown with far less gusto for him. We first caught him playing with our favourite Danes\, Efterklang around the time of the release of Parades. Nowadays\, Broderick is married and living out West with folk musician Brigid Mae Power. His 2017 release All Together Again is spell-bindingly beautiful. We have no excuse not to embrace him and ensure he’s on the line-up for the likes of Other Voices and Another Love Story in future editions. Support from Landless.

SUMMARY:Monseñor: The Last Journey of Óscar Romero
DESCRIPTION:Monseñor: The Last Journey of Óscar Romero (Monseñor: El último viaje de Óscar Romero) \nAppointed Archbishop in early 1977\, Monseñor Óscar Romero worked tirelessly and in constant personal peril until the day he was assassinated in March 1980. Romero broke off ties with the military and aligned himself with the poor\, delivering messages of hope in weekly sermons which became national events in his country of birth\, El Salvador. \n \nWith rare recordings and film footage from Romero’s own collection and a wide range of interviews from those whose lives were changed by Archbishop Romero\, including church activists\, human rights lawyers\, former guerrilla fighters and politicians\, this documentary is a timely portrait of one individual’s quest to speak the truth. \nInstituto Cervantes (Dublin) – Auditórium. Lincoln House\, Lincoln Place\nDublin 2 \n11th September\, 6pm to 7:35pm. \nFree admission and no booking is required. \nScreening organized by the Embassy of El Salvadorin London. Film in Spanish with English subtitles.

SUMMARY:Lomax in Éirinn
DESCRIPTION:In the late 1940s\, Texan song-collector Alan Lomax had a dream to record and preserve the music of the world. He began that mission in Ireland. His aim was to preserve a musical tradition valued by few Irish people. He wrote: “The last notes of the old\, high and beautiful Irish civilization are dying away. A civilization which produced an epic\, lyrical and musical literature as noble as any in the world.” Twenty years later\, his recordings helped inspire the 1970s revival of Irish music by bands such as Planxty\, The Bothy Band and Clannad. Lomax in Éirinn features some of the best archive recordings made by Alan Lomax throughout the world. It also includes exclusive performances from contemporary artists performing music that Lomax preserved\, including Steve Earle\, Clannad\, Slow Moving Clouds\, The Tulla Ceilí Band and Nell Ní Chróinín. The screening will be followed by a Q&A\, with some music from Moya and Pól Brennan from Clannad. \n

SUMMARY:Crocosmia x
DESCRIPTION:Acting as a new metaphor for diversity in Ireland to question received notions of what is ‘native’ and what is ‘foreign’ Crocosmia x offers a symbol for hope and a gentle reminder of the challenges and obstacles endured by those displaced by political\, social and environmental issues. Working with Hallah Farhan Dawood\, Ragad Farhan Dawood\, Papy Kahoya Kasongo\, Mohamad Fadaie and Romeo Kibambe Kitenge Crocosmia x has cultivated this metaphor through workshops in schools\, a site-specific public artwork for Grangegorman and the artwork at IMMA. \nThe is a free\, family friendly event which includes an official opening\, poetry readings and refreshments. All are welcome to join us for this celebration.

SUMMARY:Terry
DESCRIPTION:Having released three albums in as many years\, by way of Australia comes a band that has been steadily pumping out beats. All members of this indie/punk quartet play in several other bands but when they come together something magical happens – Terry comes alive. In addition to playing instruments\, all four members take turns singing lead and this adds variety to the listening experience as each track takes on a new personality. Their latest LP\, I’m Terry\, has the Melbourne band offering a firm handshake in the form of  lead single ‘The Whip’\, which will have you bobbing your head along to the “nanananananaa” chorus long after the gig has ended.

SUMMARY:Borderline
DESCRIPTION:Internationally exhibited Artist Elaine Byrne works with photography\, sculpture\, and video to convey her powerful messages. Her art has garnered attention and awards\, and her piece Hellgoer has recently been added to the  permanent collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Her new solo show examines what motivates nations to separate themselves through the erection of walls. The US president famously called for a wall to built between his country and Mexico; what kind of transformation will its completion bring about? What are nations trying to protect or contain when they seek such drastic measures? Using sculpture and photography\, Byrne examines the themes of globalization\, economics\, nation sovereignty\, and the anxiety that drives nations to desire a physical separation from what surrounds them.

Celebrating 80 years in existence\, Dennis the Menace\, Gnasher and the Bash Street Kids form a stable of characters who have become intergenerational household names. It still sells almost 2m copies annually\, all from its base in Dundee. \nTo mark this milestone\, Pop Artist Horace Panter has transported the notorious gang of iconic British comic characters into the worlds of Warhol\, Lichtenstein and Hockney in a new collection of paintings and silkscreen prints.

SUMMARY:Thunderpussy
DESCRIPTION:It’s feels like it’s been while since we’ve had a hard ass female rock group – a Thunderpussy if you must. Well\, it’s time to get swallowed up by this Seattle-based quartet. It’s time for some recalcitrant rock. Touring their self-titled debut with lead track Speed Queen\, they are fresh and raucous but not afraid of mellower moments too such as on Torpedo Love. They’ve supported The Struts\, played Sasquatch this summer\, signed to a major and been hailed as the favourite new band of Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready. They should be yours too.

SUMMARY:A Skull In Connemara
DESCRIPTION:A Martin McDonagh play is guaranteed to provide three things\, violence\, comedy and locals mixed up in strange circumstances. A Skull In Connemara does disappoint or fail to live up to the McDonagh formula. Recipient of several awards\, McDonagh is able to write characters that despite finding themselves in moral predicaments\, do not lose their humanness. Part of his celebrated Leenane Trilogy\, comprising of The Beauty Queen of Leenane and The Lonesome West\, A Skull In Connemara is a dark comedy about a local grave digger who’s community thinks killed his wife 7 years earlier. Pat Shortt delivers a convincing performance as protagonist Mick Dowd who finds himself at the mercy of nosey neighbours.

SUMMARY:Slum Village
DESCRIPTION:Chances are\, if you are anywhere near the Detroit music scene\, you’ve heard of the influential hip hop trio that makes up Slum Village. The group was founded in the early 90’s by 3 childhood friends: Baatin\, T3\, rapper and producer J Dilla\, who all grew up together in the Conant Gardens neighborhood of Detroit\, MI. After leaving Pershing High School\, the trio began to forge a path into the Detroit underground hip hop scene and quickly found themselves steadily gaining popularity\, where they originally went by the name Ssenepod. \nIn 1991 the group changed their name to Slum Village recording their first album “Vol. 1”\, in Dilla’s basement and RJ Rice Studios\, it was critically acclaimed in the Detroit underground scene\, later finding its way into the hands of A Tribe Called Quest’s own Q-Tip\, who played it for some of hip hop’s elite\, such as Busta Rhymes\, Questlove\, and D’angelo. \nSlum Village landed their first record deal in 1998 with Barak/AM records. Due to label politics\, the group was forced to release their album “Best Kept Secret” under the alias J-88. Their now classic record\, “Fantastic\, Vol. 2” was not officially released until 2000 through Barak Records\, dubbed an immediate classic from fans and industry tastemakers. This album featured an A list line up including Busta Rhymes\, Common\, D’angelo\, Jazzy Jeff\, Pete Rock\, Kurupt\, and Q-Tip who passed the torch to Slum Village on the record “Hold Tight”. \nIn 2001\, J Dilla made the decision to leave the group to pursue his solo career\, but still hung around helping Young RJ with production. Baatin and T3 started work on their next album “Trinity” through Barak/Capital Records\, featuring Elzhi on 6 of the tracks. This album would feature their first commercial single “Tainted” which ft an unknown Dwele\, also “Disco” the remix produced by Timberland. In 2002\, “Dirty District”\, a compilation of songs by Detroit rappers largely produced by T3 and Young RJ\, was released. 2004 album\, “Detroit Deli” (A Taste of Detroit) included the hit single\, “Selfish”\, produced by Kanye West and featuring John Legend. 2005\, the release of “Prequel to a Classic”\, a mix tape\, with production from Young RJ and Black Milk. \nIn 2010\, the album “Villa Manifesto” was released under Ne’astra/Koch Records\, featuring the late Baatin. By that time Elzhi had decided to move on and focus on pursuing his own solo career. 2011/12 Slum Village new mixtape “Dirty Slums Vol. 1 & Vol. 2”\, presented by DJ Mick Boogie\, featuring artist such as Rapper Big Pooh\, De La Soul\, Focus\, Skyzoo\, Phonte\, and Phife\, having over 100\,000 + downloads. 2012 releasing “Evolution” on vinyl and CD. 2013/14 “B-Sides and Vintage\, were released. Slum Village continues their journey with an invigorated energy as T3 holds down the legacy with Grammy nominated producer Young RJ. \nSlum Village \nSupport from FYNCH & 9Threetil \nAfterparty with DJ Mona-Lxsa \nDoors 8pm | www.sugarclubtickets.com \nIn association with Hennessy

SUMMARY:Frankie Cosmos
DESCRIPTION:Songwriter Greta Kline\, aka Frankie Cosmos\,  will be filling the intimate room of the Button Factory with what her and her band do best — sweet melodies and fast tempos. The four-piece indie-pop band is touring their latest album\, Vessel\, which was released in March. Since the success of the 2016 LP\, Next Thing\, Frankie Cosmos has continued to blend introspective lyrics with soft vocals and fast drums to create what Pitchfork Magazine calls an “intentionally unassuming sound.” A selection of songs are sure to create a cozy atmosphere\, such as the single “Jesse” which begins\, “Me and Jesse stayed up till 2/We talked about dreams\, about things\, about you.” Expect head bobbing and  shoulder swaying\, as Frankie Cosmos takes you on a sweet sounding journey. \n

DESCRIPTION:This self-taught painter and illustrator likens his work to “a band that sound like they could fall apart at any minute but then sync up and transcend into something beautiful.” There’s clear nods to Keith Haring in an image such as Black Magic Shadows and an interplay of playfulness and provocation across his work. \nIG: @devlinnewworks

SUMMARY:Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever
DESCRIPTION:So we haven’t quite fallen as head over Docs for these purveyors of jangly guitar pop from Melbourne. However\, their debut album Hope Downs has touched a chord of widespread acceptance in an 8.1 Pitchforky way. With wry lyrics delivered in a half singing-half talking style\, theirs is the soundtrack to summer nostalgia. For fans of The Go-Betweens.

SUMMARY:Eleanor Friedberger
DESCRIPTION:Off the back of releasing Rebound\, her fourth solo album\, it’s safe to say Friedberger is putting some distance between those who remember her in The Fiery Furnaces and those who engage with her as a solo artist. The aforementioned Rebound is garnering her some of the best reviews of her career – it’s electronic pop in its most embracing guise. SUMMARY:The League of Gentlemen
DESCRIPTION:“It was like watching Monty Python remake The Wicker Man from inside Alan Bennett’s fever dream\,” is how The Guardian described The League of Gentlemen\, which first landed on terrestrial TV in 1999. Set in the fictional northern town of Royston Vasey\, the sketch show was a weekly parade of monsters\, tragicomic oddballs and one-off grotesques. The perfect blend of curtain twitching creepiness which\, like all the best comedy\, never dates.

SUMMARY:Ariel Pink
DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately\, Ariel Pink’s Time to Meet Your God from last year’s Dedicated to Bobby Jameson hasn’t landed him the warm up slot for Pope Francis. But he trades up for his own headline show tonight. Sun Kil Moon’s Mark Kozelek extolled Ariel Rosenberg’s merits in song earlier this year\, saying\, “If it was 1975 he’d be a household name/And we’d be neck-and-neck/He’d be David Bowie famous.” Even Julian Casablancas called Pink “analogous” to Bowie. Whether he’s the Rotund White Duke or not is up to the listener. He is a most beloved curious curveball and the crafter of music y’all need to hear. \n
