SUMMARY:Superorganism
DESCRIPTION:Superorganism really are a millennial mash-up with the playground joy of getting a ride on everything. The group consists of international members from England\, Japan\, South Korea\, Australia and New Zealand who only formed at the start of last year. We heard everything from Lemon Jelly to Giant Drag on their excellent indie pop debut but it’s really a roulette of so many acts you once loved and have possibly forgotten about. Their excellent Reflections On The Screen is the perfect top down start if you care to acquaint yourself with this fizzy drink act that simply wants you to ‘live for the now’.

SUMMARY:Dave Chappelle & Jon Stewart
DESCRIPTION:Two titans of comedy make their Irish debuts at this mobile-free show. Chappelle follows in the vein of Eddie Murphy (‘80s) and Chris Rock (‘90s) as a great of his generation\, seamlessly mixing incisive social commentary into his comedic flow. Indeed his reputed $60m Netflix deal for stand-up specials cemented their disruptor status within the sphere. Meanwhile\, Stewart has been on a hiatus since leaving The Daily Show in 2015 after a 16-year tenure. Whether he could have contained himself or simply self-immolated during this Trump White House is arguable. If you have €770.75 spare you can meet and greet the boys. \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Q6l2D4i2FQ

SUMMARY:Banter 200
DESCRIPTION:Kudos to Jim Carroll and his merry band of talkers for making it to the 200th edition of Banter. Carroll is a gab-fest of the best kind himself – mischievous\, curious and insightful – and this is why these chats have lasted the course. His line-up for this special one includes Brian Kerr who enlivened our World Cup viewing with his knicky-knacky commentary\, panel discussions on book writing and editing as well as a performance by Slow Moving Clouds who have just released Starfall. It is part of the Dublin Podcast Festival and all ticket proceeds go to Women’s Aid.

SUMMARY:Jeff Mills
DESCRIPTION:Where will Jeff Mills go when he wishes to return here next? And he’s not the only one we need to ask this question of. The looming closure of District 8 sounds the death knell of clubbing in the city for sets of any decent scale (1000 in this instance). As of now\, it’s safe until the end of the year at least\, but the future will be a lot bleaker in its absence. As the founding father of Detroit collective Underground Resistance\, veteran producer Mills is an artist whose minimalist approach has shaped the course of techno. Catch him while he has a space and reason to be here.

SUMMARY:James Holden & The Animal Spirits
DESCRIPTION:The term improv folk trance conjures up images of Wild Wild Country – a blissful reckless abandon still controlled by those on stage. Holden’s path to ‘prov has seen him lead his own “rebellion against dance music\,” yet trance remains in the DNA of his output even if it’s now more whirling dervish than enraptured pill head. Thom Yorke is a “massive fan” and cited Holden as an influence whilst writing the soundtrack for Luca Guadagnino’s forthcoming Suspiria. Summon the spirits!

SUMMARY:BP Fallon - The Camera & I
DESCRIPTION:As legends go\, the Beep is up there with them. Yes\, he was on Top of the Pops with John Lennon & The Plastic Ono Band in 1970 miming playing the tambourine on Instant Karma. Yes\, he was a publicist with Thin Lizzy and T Rex and toured with Led Zeppelin. Yes\, he’s recorded with Jack White and ran Death Disco with Alan McGee. This level of old school rock ’n’ roll also granted him access others can only dream of. “It just seems the right time” says BP about doing his first-ever photography exhibition. “I always carry a camera\,” says BP. “The shots\, they’re moments. I look at the photo of Willie Nelson at his 80th Birthday and each line etched on his face signifies a thousand lifetimes.” He’s also a fantastic name-dropper but\, unlike others\, the grains of truth far outweigh the sediment of lies. \nRuns until October 18

SUMMARY:Roderic O'Conor and The Moderns
DESCRIPTION:Described by The Irish Times as “Ireland’s great forgotten painter”\, this retrospective showcases O’Conor’s signature expressionist style\, full of bold colours. Many of the pieces have not been displayed until now\, perhaps due to his distrust of art dealers. O’Conor was popular amongst the avant garde scene\, and surrealist André Breton was known to have bought some of his art. O’Conor’s work is on display alongside other well-known artists that were both his friends and collaborators such as Paul Gauguin\, Vincent van Gogh\, Armand Seguin\, Robert Befan and Cuno Amiet.

SUMMARY:my comfort and my joy: Songs from the Irish Other
DESCRIPTION:At the opening of this exhibition\, Irish traveller and singer Thomas McCarthy sang the very song from which this exhibition is titled. The words ‘my comfort and my joy’ were preceded by ‘where will you be buried’ but as Belfast-based artist\, and musician\, Seamus Harahan notes: “I filmed Thomas in the context of our shared comfort and joy in the song and music.” By documenting McCarthy and his heritage in this original commission\, Harahan seeks “to look at an old weave of Irishness that hasn’t fitted with modern\, plastic\, Irish state ideals.” \nuntil November 17

SUMMARY:Equinox Theatre Company: The M House
DESCRIPTION:Equinox Theatre Company in association with axis: Ballymun\, Arts & Disability Ireland and Dublin Theatre Festival presents The M House. \n  \nThe M House \n– a play for anyone who has ever been put in a box. \nThe M House is an adventure story. \nIt’s a satirical look at the legacy of institutional Ireland. \nIt’s a scramble to make sense of our one-size-fits-all culture. \nIt’s a parable of our times about the treatment of our vulnerable. \n  \nDevised and created by an eclectic group of theatre artists\, some with disabilities and unique sets of needs\, and directed by Medb Lambert\, The M House is a unique and powerful new play from Ireland’s leading inclusive theatre company. \n  \nThe M House explores the growing global trend of categorising and labelling people\, politically and socially and then trying to fit them into neat little boxes under broad headings – ‘Irish’; ‘Female’; ‘Disabled’ – the list goes on and on…when actually\, really those lines are becoming increasingly blurred. \n  \nThe M House is a play for anyone who has ever been put in a box\, but when you open the boxes\, squash them\, and embrace diversity\, you can come to see the world as far more interesting that you could even imagine. \n  \nVenue: axis:Ballymun \nDates: 8 Oct at 8pm; 9th Oct at 11.30am and 8pm \nRelaxed Performances: ALL \nOpen captioned performances: ALL \nAudio described performances: 8\, 9 Oct 8pm \n  \nBookings: dublintheatrefestival.com Phone: 01-677 8899 \nIn person Dublin Theatre Festival Box Office\, Festival House\, 12 Essex Street East\, Temple Bar\, Dublin 2 \n  \n \nWho are Equinox? \nEquinox Theatre Company are an inclusive theatre company based in KCAT Arts Centre in Callan\, Co. Kilkenny. KCAT Arts Centre has been pioneering and championing inclusion in the arts\, for both audiences and artists alike for over 20 years.  We believe that the arts are for everybody. \n Accessible ethos \nThe M House features built in open captioning and audio description is available. All of our performances are relaxed: this involves throwing the conventional rule book out the window. The audience are gently lit and sound volume is always kept at a reasonable level. If you need to leave the auditorium for whatever reason you will absolutely be allowed back in.  Now the audience become an intrinsic part of the experience. \nIt’s an acknowledgement that everyone experiences the world in unique ways. \n  \nRelaxed performances were originally designed for people on the Autism spectrum\, but actually\, everyone can benefit from a more relaxed environment.

SUMMARY:Dublin Theatre Festival
DESCRIPTION:Our flagpole theatre festival is back to thrill\, entertain and provoke. We’ll be delving into a few productions in our October issue so it’s worth flagging a few that take to the boards in the opening days. While it’s the work of well-known local theatre companies and directors which usually prove the draws\, it’s also worth paying deference to lesser-known international shows which have caught the attention of director Willie White. Fantasia in the Project Arts Centre (Sept 28-29) examines imagination in the context of theatre. It is the work of Polish director\, filmmaker\, and playwright\, Anna Karasińska. Mining Stories\, also in the Project (Sept 28-30)\, is a documentary theatre performance based around the fallout of a collapsed dam in Brazil which contained waste from a nearby mine. Multiverse in the Samuel Beckett (Sept 27-29) sees Louis Vanhaverbeke play a multifunctional DJ in a humorous catherine-wheel of song\, dance and invention.

SUMMARY:The Lost Moment
DESCRIPTION:On November 30\, 1968\, as a young lad\, Sean O’Hagan attended a civil rights march in his home town of Armagh. It’s worth bearing in mind that to be eligible to vote in a local election back then you had to be a homeowner\, most of whom were middle and upper class Protestants. Couple this with gerrymandering and blatant housing and work discrimination against Catholics\, and you had the simmering stew of discontent which gave way to The Troubles. \n Of course\, ’68 proved a watershed year globally\, with uprisings and tumult across the world from the Prague Spring to the assassination of Martin Luther King in the US. The Lost Moment revisits this seminal year through the eyes of the photographers who were there to witness and testify a change was on its way. SUMMARY:IFI Documentary
DESCRIPTION:It’s been an extraordinarily successful summer for docs Stateside with Three Identical Strangers\, Won’t You Be My Neighbor and RBG grossing up to $45m between them. Add to this the success of Wild Wild Country on Netflix and the podcast boom and one feels somewhat heartened that there is a piqued  curiosity for well-told tales. \nThe 16th edition of this doc-fest includes 15 features\, the world premiere of Marcus Robinson’s The Man Who Dared To Dream and seven Irish premières\, including the festival’s opening film\, Minding the Gap\, winner of the 2018 Sheffield Doc/Fest New Talent and Audience awards. \nOther notables to keep an eye out for include Tom Burke’s Losing Alaska\, which follows the inhabitants of Newtok\, Alaska\, as their homes become endangered by coastal erosion. Ross Whitaker’s Katie\, a look at the notoriously private Olympic champion boxer Katie Taylor as she goes professional\, and Lovers of the Night\, a portrait of seven elderly Cistercian monks\, residents of Bolton Abbey\, Co Kildare\, shot by German filmmaker Anna Frances Ewert. \n

SUMMARY:Festival of History
DESCRIPTION:We often hear George Santayana’s line being trotted out about those who cannot remember the past being condemned to repeat it. George is right. So take this chance to deep dive into history. You can get up to speed on The Romanovs before Mad Men’s Matthew Weiner makes them hot stuff on Amazon Prime. There’s talks on Karl Marx and his Irish connections\, the sinking of the RMS Leinster whose centenary falls on October 10th\, Hitler’s women pilots in the Third Reich\, women in Hollywood in the ‘30s\, as well as a star turn by our very own Brian McMahon — he of the Brand New Retro parish\, p14 — whose talk ‘The Inevitable Seduction (Ireland and Pop Culture)’ will take place in Drumcondra Library on Thursday September 27.

SUMMARY:Strictly Handbag - Celebrating 25 Years
DESCRIPTION:Martin Thomas was patched into the fabric of the city. A promoter\, chancer and bon vivant; Thomas was a man never short of an idea or opinion. He was one of us. The Drogheda native flipped venues into bewitching club spectacles and Strictly Handbag was probably the best known of these. If you’re of a certain vintage you’ll remember its flyers which came in the shape of a handbag you could assemble. The Monday nightclub in Rí Rá (yes we had Monday nightclubs back then) was a mainstay for the service industry who know how to party like no other. Thomas sadly left the scene earlier this year after a battle with cancer. This fundraiser for his family is also a cause for nostalgia and celebration. Dave Haslam\, Dandeloin and many other stalwarts from that era are on the decks.

SUMMARY:Mitski
DESCRIPTION:The release of her fifth studio album Be The Cowboy sees the Japanese-American artist scale giddy new heights. Its lead single Nobody has already blown up with over 2.5m plays on Spotify\, and sets the lovelorn tone of the release. “For this new record\,” she says\, “I experimented in narrative and fiction.” Right through to its closing track Two Slow Dancers\, Mitski has exquisitely bottled emotions and sentiments which will ring true for her growing fanbase.

SUMMARY:Mulatu Astatke
DESCRIPTION:Mulatu Astatke (born 1943) is an Ethiopian musician and arranger best known as the father of Ethio-jazz. Born in the western Ethiopian city of Jimma\, Mulatu trained in London\, New York City\, and Boston where he combined his jazz and Latin music interests with traditional Ethiopian music and became the first African student to enroll at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music from where he received an honorary degree in 2012. Astatke led his band while playing vibraphone and conga drums – instruments that he introduced into Ethiopian popular music – among other percussion instruments\, keyboards and organ. \n \nHis albums focus primarily on instrumental music\, and Astatke appears on all three known albums of instrumentals that were released during Ethiopia’s Golden ’70s. He collaborated with many notable artists in both countries\, arranging and playing on recordings by Mahmoud Ahmed\, and appearing as a special guest with Duke Ellington during a tour of Ethiopia in 1973. His Western audience expanded even further when the 2005 Jim Jarmusch film Broken Flowers featured seven of Astatke’s songs. Hip hop artists have also sampled Astatke’s songs extensively\, for example in the works of Nas\, Damian Marley\, Kanye West\, Cut Chemist\, and Knaan. He toured with US band Either/ Orchestra in 2006 and in 2008 recorded an album with the Heliocentrics and completed a Radcliffe Institute Fellowship at Harvard University\, where he worked on modernizations of traditional Ethiopian instruments and premiered a portion of a new opera\, The Yared Opera. \n*VENUE CHANGE FROM VICAR STREET*\nAll Ticketmaster tickets are still valid for this event\nPLEASE NOTE that all tickets are now General Admission. SUMMARY:Peter Broderick
DESCRIPTION:Peter Broderick is scandalously underrated. He’s not the first musician to fall foul of unfair obscurity\, but it still baffles us how the wind which set sail to his Erased Tapes labelmates — Nils Frahm and Ólafur Arnalds — has blown with far less gusto for him. We first caught him playing with our favourite Danes\, Efterklang around the time of the release of Parades. Nowadays\, Broderick is married and living out West with folk musician Brigid Mae Power. His 2017 release All Together Again is spell-bindingly beautiful. We have no excuse not to embrace him and ensure he’s on the line-up for the likes of Other Voices and Another Love Story in future editions. Support from Landless.

SUMMARY:Monseñor: The Last Journey of Óscar Romero
DESCRIPTION:Monseñor: The Last Journey of Óscar Romero (Monseñor: El último viaje de Óscar Romero) \nAppointed Archbishop in early 1977\, Monseñor Óscar Romero worked tirelessly and in constant personal peril until the day he was assassinated in March 1980. Romero broke off ties with the military and aligned himself with the poor\, delivering messages of hope in weekly sermons which became national events in his country of birth\, El Salvador. \n \nWith rare recordings and film footage from Romero’s own collection and a wide range of interviews from those whose lives were changed by Archbishop Romero\, including church activists\, human rights lawyers\, former guerrilla fighters and politicians\, this documentary is a timely portrait of one individual’s quest to speak the truth. \nInstituto Cervantes (Dublin) – Auditórium. SUMMARY:Lomax in Éirinn
DESCRIPTION:In the late 1940s\, Texan song-collector Alan Lomax had a dream to record and preserve the music of the world. He began that mission in Ireland. His aim was to preserve a musical tradition valued by few Irish people. He wrote: “The last notes of the old\, high and beautiful Irish civilization are dying away. A civilization which produced an epic\, lyrical and musical literature as noble as any in the world.” Twenty years later\, his recordings helped inspire the 1970s revival of Irish music by bands such as Planxty\, The Bothy Band and Clannad. Lomax in Éirinn features some of the best archive recordings made by Alan Lomax throughout the world. It also includes exclusive performances from contemporary artists performing music that Lomax preserved\, including Steve Earle\, Clannad\, Slow Moving Clouds\, The Tulla Ceilí Band and Nell Ní Chróinín. The screening will be followed by a Q&A\, with some music from Moya and Pól Brennan from Clannad. \n
