SUMMARY:Requiem for the Truth
DESCRIPTION:Truth\, we are told\, is dead. If so\, then who organises the funeral? Why none other than Stomptown Brass\, the 10-piece street-funk band\, and Collapsing Horse theatre company. Witness the colourful exuberance of the Haitian Voodoo-inspired New Orleans jazz funeral as it smashes up against the mournful\, solemn ceremony of Roman Catholicism. An extravagant\, chaotic street party\, with a dark twist. Also on Friday November 16 \n \n

SUMMARY:My Roots Are Showing
DESCRIPTION:In this panel discussion\, broadcaster and Sunday Business Post Arts Editor Nadine O’Regan will be joined by three writers and performers — Darren McGarvey\, Emmet Kirwan and Mango — who use their roots as inspiration for their creative work\, writing about hard-hitting issues and difficult truths. \nScottish rapper and writer Darren McGarvey (aka Loki The Scottish Rapper) recently won the prestigious Orwell Prize for his memoir Poverty Safari\, a blistering study of deprivation. A rapper-in-residence at Police Scotland’s Violence Reduction Unit\, McGarvey is described by Irvine Welsh as “an intellectual and spiritual rehab manual for the progressive left”. \nIrish rapper and poet Mango\, meanwhile\, has played to rapturous receptions at festivals from Forbidden Fruit to Electric Picnic alongside his producer/collaborator Mathman. Having first come to prominence as a member of hip-hop group The Animators\, Mango is a rapidly rising artist praised for his machine gun vocal delivery\, biting lyrics and proudly strong Dublin accent. \nEmmet Kirwan is an Irish performance poet\, actor and writer\, whose phrase ‘Stand in Awe of All Mna’ became a touchstone for the Repeal the Eighth movement\, and whose film Dublin Oldschool — a moving depiction of family relationships and drug use in Dublin — opened to major acclaim in Ireland earlier this year. \nTogether\, the panel will discuss how their backgrounds have influenced their work and tell the audience about the issues that resonate most with them in the Ireland and Britain of today. This panel discussion will be recorded for the My Roots are Showing podcast with Nadine O’Regan. \npart of the Festival of Politics

SUMMARY:Panned
DESCRIPTION:Panned is a juggernaut of emotions. First staged in the summer of 2015 in the Theatre Upstairs\, Ste Murray packs a powerhouse performance in this one-man show as he tangles and disentangles himself from a night on the town. Framed around identity\, mental health stability and the quest to cement one within relationships\, the city and its attendant distractions\, Murray inhabits a myriad of characters in this visceral production.

SUMMARY:Four
DESCRIPTION:The world premiere of Four takes place in the Music Room of Christ Church Cathedral. This large immersive work by David Bremner is based on text by Irish poet Billy Mills and themed around the four seasons\, told through the life cycle of a leaf. The ensemble is Baroque flute\, viola d’amore\, soprano\, speaker double bass\, harpsichord\, piano\, community choir and live electronics\, with video by Mihai Cucu. Bremner says: “Mills’ poetry is deeply minimal\, and the constant near-repetitions of the contour material lead to a paradoxical\, dream-like atmosphere\, where the musical material is slowly transformed\, akin to a natural process. Time is experienced as a spiral\, a journey with constant reminiscences.”  \nChristchurch Cathedral\, Friday November 9\, free entry but advance booking advised via bealfestival@gmail.com \nPerformance times: 7.30 am – Winter   |  10.30am – Spring   |   1.30pm – Summer   | 4.30pm – Autumn

SUMMARY:Intimacy
DESCRIPTION:Is technology disrupting traditional notions of togetherness\, opening new avenues for connection\, or killing off closeness altogether? These are some of the questions raised in the Science Gallery’s look at Intimacy and how it is quantified\, optimised and commodified. Bringing together technology\, neuroscience\, art\, behaviour\, belief and trust; exhibition designer Rhona Byrne brings us up close and personal to human connections through a series of exhibition highlights such as Emotion Capture — Arthur Gouillart’s beautiful sculptures which are created by using magnetic field sensors and patches to track the motion of a tongue during a kiss. A series of events and talks accompany Intimacy.

SUMMARY:Sister Nancy & Brigadier Jerry
DESCRIPTION:Sister Nancy is a Jamaican dancehall DJ and singer. And whether you know her or not\, you’ve heard\, sang or bopped to Bam Bam at some stage of your life to date. Her 1982 track has been sampled over 80 times across genres. For example Kanye sampled it on Famous off Life of Pablo and Jay-Z used it on Bam in a collaboration with Damian Marley off 4:44. Of course\, it’s sadly no surprise that she’s only started collecting royalties of late. Her brother Robert is Brigadier Jerry and further support comes from Legal Shot Soundsystem. A classic bank holiday non-artificial sweetener from the Club.

SUMMARY:Metropolis
DESCRIPTION:And so we pack up our tents and make a retreat to confines of indoors. Metropolis has anchored itself on the bank holiday weekend. Villagers\, Roisin Murphy\, Grandbrothers and The Black Madonna make it to the city after appearing at All Together Now\, its sister festival which made a very promising debut. And while we really do love Mac DeMarco too\, it’s Blood Orange who win the mantle of Most Anticipated. Polymath Dev Hynes has produced Solange and FKA Twigs\, had previous incarnations as Test Icicles and Lightspeed Champion and co-written one of the singles of the century\, Everything is Embarrassing\, with Sky Ferreria. Negro Swan sees Hynes bring a new-wave R&B game to the table. It’s one he’s summarised thematically as “black depression” but that is somewhat bleak of the recorded mark. Here’s hoping the Metropolads will leave a little room for pensiveness amid the bangers and the Negro Swans in their lives.

SUMMARY:Bram Stoker
DESCRIPTION:Bram Stoker has established itself as an inventive and entertaining festival regular. It even went so far as to win an award at the Theatre Awards for one of its commissions\, which illustrates the boundaries it is pushing and scale of its ambitions. A notable highlight is Loosysmokes world premiere of The Night of the Shifting Bog\, an outdoor\, night-time circus performance in St. Anne’s Park. And what’s not to love\, or be scared by\, with Creature Features\, a series of after-hours screenings at the Botanic Gardens including Arachnophobia (1990)\, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) and Little Shop of Horrors (1986). Of course\, the weekend is capped by the marvel that is the Macnas Parade on Bank Holiday Monday. Get your vantage point.

SUMMARY:Superorganism
DESCRIPTION:Superorganism really are a millennial mash-up with the playground joy of getting a ride on everything. The group consists of international members from England\, Japan\, South Korea\, Australia and New Zealand who only formed at the start of last year. We heard everything from Lemon Jelly to Giant Drag on their excellent indie pop debut but it’s really a roulette of so many acts you once loved and have possibly forgotten about. Their excellent Reflections On The Screen is the perfect top down start if you care to acquaint yourself with this fizzy drink act that simply wants you to ‘live for the now’.

SUMMARY:Dave Chappelle & Jon Stewart
DESCRIPTION:Two titans of comedy make their Irish debuts at this mobile-free show. Chappelle follows in the vein of Eddie Murphy (‘80s) and Chris Rock (‘90s) as a great of his generation\, seamlessly mixing incisive social commentary into his comedic flow. Indeed his reputed $60m Netflix deal for stand-up specials cemented their disruptor status within the sphere. Meanwhile\, Stewart has been on a hiatus since leaving The Daily Show in 2015 after a 16-year tenure. Whether he could have contained himself or simply self-immolated during this Trump White House is arguable. If you have €770.75 spare you can meet and greet the boys. \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Q6l2D4i2FQ

SUMMARY:Banter 200
DESCRIPTION:Kudos to Jim Carroll and his merry band of talkers for making it to the 200th edition of Banter. Carroll is a gab-fest of the best kind himself – mischievous\, curious and insightful – and this is why these chats have lasted the course. His line-up for this special one includes Brian Kerr who enlivened our World Cup viewing with his knicky-knacky commentary\, panel discussions on book writing and editing as well as a performance by Slow Moving Clouds who have just released Starfall. It is part of the Dublin Podcast Festival and all ticket proceeds go to Women’s Aid.

SUMMARY:Jeff Mills
DESCRIPTION:Where will Jeff Mills go when he wishes to return here next? And he’s not the only one we need to ask this question of. The looming closure of District 8 sounds the death knell of clubbing in the city for sets of any decent scale (1000 in this instance). As of now\, it’s safe until the end of the year at least\, but the future will be a lot bleaker in its absence. As the founding father of Detroit collective Underground Resistance\, veteran producer Mills is an artist whose minimalist approach has shaped the course of techno. Catch him while he has a space and reason to be here.

SUMMARY:James Holden & The Animal Spirits
DESCRIPTION:The term improv folk trance conjures up images of Wild Wild Country – a blissful reckless abandon still controlled by those on stage. Holden’s path to ‘prov has seen him lead his own “rebellion against dance music\,” yet trance remains in the DNA of his output even if it’s now more whirling dervish than enraptured pill head. Thom Yorke is a “massive fan” and cited Holden as an influence whilst writing the soundtrack for Luca Guadagnino’s forthcoming Suspiria. Summon the spirits!

SUMMARY:BP Fallon - The Camera & I
DESCRIPTION:As legends go\, the Beep is up there with them. Yes\, he was on Top of the Pops with John Lennon & The Plastic Ono Band in 1970 miming playing the tambourine on Instant Karma. Yes\, he was a publicist with Thin Lizzy and T Rex and toured with Led Zeppelin. Yes\, he’s recorded with Jack White and ran Death Disco with Alan McGee. This level of old school rock ’n’ roll also granted him access others can only dream of. “It just seems the right time” says BP about doing his first-ever photography exhibition. “I always carry a camera\,” says BP. “The shots\, they’re moments. I look at the photo of Willie Nelson at his 80th Birthday and each line etched on his face signifies a thousand lifetimes.” He’s also a fantastic name-dropper but\, unlike others\, the grains of truth far outweigh the sediment of lies. \nRuns until October 18

SUMMARY:Roderic O'Conor and The Moderns
DESCRIPTION:Described by The Irish Times as “Ireland’s great forgotten painter”\, this retrospective showcases O’Conor’s signature expressionist style\, full of bold colours. Many of the pieces have not been displayed until now\, perhaps due to his distrust of art dealers. O’Conor was popular amongst the avant garde scene\, and surrealist André Breton was known to have bought some of his art. O’Conor’s work is on display alongside other well-known artists that were both his friends and collaborators such as Paul Gauguin\, Vincent van Gogh\, Armand Seguin\, Robert Befan and Cuno Amiet.

SUMMARY:my comfort and my joy: Songs from the Irish Other
DESCRIPTION:At the opening of this exhibition\, Irish traveller and singer Thomas McCarthy sang the very song from which this exhibition is titled. The words ‘my comfort and my joy’ were preceded by ‘where will you be buried’ but as Belfast-based artist\, and musician\, Seamus Harahan notes: “I filmed Thomas in the context of our shared comfort and joy in the song and music.” By documenting McCarthy and his heritage in this original commission\, Harahan seeks “to look at an old weave of Irishness that hasn’t fitted with modern\, plastic\, Irish state ideals.” \nuntil November 17
