SUMMARY:Amplify Her
DESCRIPTION:In announcing their 2019 line-up\, Primavera Sound stated that they had\, at last\, achieved a 50/50 gender balance across its 226 names from headliners Solange\, Robyn\, Cardi B\, Janelle Monáe and Erykah Badu through to lesser knowns such as Tirzah and Georgia Anne Muldrow. #thenewnormal is how they called it.  Most recently IMRO (the Irish Music Rights Organisation) have partnered with Keychange to achieve this balance by 2022. (details here) Already working on this is The Gash Collective who have been pushing for the half light to be fully shone on our shores. They are hosting a CDJ & Vinyl workshop\, a screening of Amplify Her\, a documentary exploring women within the electronic music scene followed by a panel discussion on learnings for here.

SUMMARY:Brian Deady
DESCRIPTION:Brian Deady had been something of a well kept secret at home in Ireland until his song Clap Both My Hands became one of the most played Irish songs of 2016 and reached No.1 in the Spotify UK Viral charts. \nHis recent single ‘Get on My Knees’ has also featured in the hit American TV show ‘Lucifer’. \n \nConjuring up strong gospel influences\, at times the Irishman sounds more like he was raised in the Deep South than as one of 10 kids in Cork and his rich\, soulful voice comes with a contemporary R&B edge.

SUMMARY:The Road to the East
DESCRIPTION:Judith Mok and the Khoshravesh brothers                                – \nIn the 16th century the Jews were expelled from Spain\, and scattered East to the Ottoman Empire\, North Africa and even further afield. They took with them the Spanish language and the music of medieval Spain. Down through the centuries they interacted and mingled with the music of the East\, to produce what is now known as Sephardic music. The Dutch soprano of part Sephardic descent\, Judith Mok\, has been exploring and performing this repertoire for decades. \nThe Khoshravesh brothers\, now based in Paris\, studied classical and traditional music in their native Iran. They have joined Judith Mok in a programme which mixes the many traditions of West and East\, and explores their similarities and differences\, the cross-fertilisations. They will be performing together Sephardic songs\, classical Persian music\, and in addition\, they will perform other music from the 16th century\, such as John Dowland\, using traditional instruments. \nJudith Mok – Soprano \nNima Khoshravesh – Setar \nPouya Khoshravesh – Kamancheh \nMani Khoshravesh – Ney\, Damam and Oud \n

SUMMARY:The Murder Capital
DESCRIPTION:The first time\, and last time\, we caught The Murder Capital was at the Other Voices stage at Electric Picnic. The post-punk five-piece brought a fervid intensity to their set with lead singer James McGovern channeling the spirit of Ian Curtis in a fireball of rage. Unlike other acts on stage\, there was no recording of their set which we can only assume is down to a rollout strategy by their management team Q Prime. In joining them\, they link up with a meaty roster of acts such as The Black Keys\, Foals\, Metallica and Muse. With support slots to Slaves and Idles\, expect much bigger stages for the boys in 2019.

SUMMARY:Alice Maher - Vox Materia
DESCRIPTION:Having exhibited in The Source in Thurles and the Crawford in Cork\, Vox Materia makes it to the capital. Maher takes the mermaid myth as the point of exploration in her new work which incorporates silhouettes of photos of herself contorted into different positions along with hand-painted wood relief prints. There’s also a video installation and small sculptures displayed in a long glass cabinet. “I got really interested in what the female has had to do throughout history in order to belong to the human race\, or just to be an equal\,” she says. “It seemed to me that a lot of it was actually to give up her voice. And I’ve always been interested in the loss of voice.” \nUntil December 22

SUMMARY:Julia Holter
DESCRIPTION:Holter has just released her fifth album Aviary\, a complex 90-minute sweep of sounds and thoughts on the chaos of now. \nThere’s the crash of cymbals\, the caterwauling of bagpipes\, the stabbing of strings and the jumble of percussion. \nWords drenched in nonlinear enlightenment dip and soar with Holter deftly controlling its kite path. \n \nThe thought of all of this coming to a stage is quite thrilling. \nImage Credit: Tonje Thilesen \nThe Button Factory\, Saturday December 8\, €24

SUMMARY:The Wild Dog Rose

SUMMARY:The Redneck Manifesto
DESCRIPTION:“The first time I played with The Redneck Manifesto was in the Funnel Bar around the time they started out. We were thrown together on a bill and I hadn’t met them before. I was blown away\, almost intimidated by how fucking cool they were. The thing I noticed was how they all moved as if they are hearing a different downbeat or offbeat but always perfectly in sync. Being from Crumlin and playing so hard I thought they were real tough guys but they’re all kinda softies at heart\, maybe don’t fuck with Richie. I asked Rich to play bass in my band shortly after that Funnel gig and Matty a couple of years later on guitar. One of my favourite ever musical experiences was the night I got to fill in for Neil on synths and percussion at the Róisín Dubh around the time of I am Brazil. We’ve been through a lot together over the years so i’m thrilled to be involved in the celebration of the Irish band I’ve been to see most in my lifetime. I’ve said it before\, New Orleans had the Meters\, Lagos had Africa 70 and Dublin has The Redneck Manifesto.” – Davids Kitt (who supports them as New Jackson tonight along with The Dublin Guitar Quartet)

SUMMARY:Lauryn Hill
DESCRIPTION:The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was released 20 years ago and it’s not an overstatement to rank it as one of the finest debut albums ever. It still sounds fresh and relevant and as Adele says “an honest representation of love and life”. It was to be the only solo studio record of The Fugees star. It’s also fair to say that this tour has been patchy at times with delays\, cancellations and Ms Hill discarding the likes of Santigold and Nas from support slots. You pay your money\, you take your chances.
