DESCRIPTION:Kilmainham Gaol Museum is currently hosting  an exhibition created by Professor Joanna Brück of the UCD School of Archaeology in association with seven people from around the world who came to Ireland as refugees. \nObjects\, War and Memory in Ireland Past and Present explores how objects tell stories of courage\, resilience\, love and hope in the face of conflict through the personal testimonies of participants who describe objects they have brought from home and what these mean to them. \nInterspersed with these personal stories are the stories of objects from Kilmainham Gaol Museum\, revealing resonances between the contemporary experiences of refugees and experiences of war\, oppression and in Ireland’s recent past. \nThe exhibition runs from 26 September 2025 to 31 January 2026\, with last admission at 4pm. \nGo see!

SUMMARY:Alice Maher - The Sibyls
DESCRIPTION:‘In The Sibyls\, Alice Maher presents a series of monumental drawings of female figures entangled in\, or twisting free from\, vast snaking mounds of hair. At the base of these drawings the artist has placed small piles of highly polished\, irregular objects— amorphous forms that resemble great globs of mercury. The title of the series\, The Sibyls\, references the oracular women of archaic times\, seers who lived apart from society and were believed to channel the prophesies of the divine. In Renaissance art these figures were transformed into biblical prophetesses\, pictured holding scrolls or books\, as in Michelangelo’s majestic turban-clad sibyls in the Sistine chapel. \nMaher’s Sibyls are different – rather than resting serenely in the architecture of institutional belief or patriarchal systems of meaning\, these Sibyls are altogether more dynamic and equivocal. Their scrolls have morphed into chaotic skeins of hair; their turbans twisted into massive living organisms that envelop\, extend from\, and consume their heads\, while their powerful bodies struggle and strain to impart their portentous message… \n \n…Culturally coded as either dangerous or shameful depending on its context\, hair becomes here a visual agent of instability. Are the Sibyls coming into being through this dense matrix of bodily material\, or are they caught in the web of their own weaving? Are they rising or falling\, emerging or succumbing? The signs are deliberately destabilising; their meanings are as slippery and shifting as the mysterious sculptural shapes tumbled below.’ \nThe above extract is taken from an Accompanying Text written by Dr Sarah Kelleher. \nAlice Maher\, The Sibyls opens at the Kevin Kavanagh Gallery on  Thursday September 11th. The exhibition runs until October 11th. \nTo coincide with The Sibyls\, the Gallery is hosting an evening with Alice Maher and Jesse Jones: In Conversation on Thursday September 11th at 6pm. \nImage Credits \nFeature Image: Alice Maher\, Vox Sibyllae\, Cast bronze\, nickel plated sculptures\, dimensions variable\, 2018-2025.  Photography Credit: Ros Kavanagh \nImage 2: Alice Maher\, Sibyl I\, Charcoal\, graphite and chalk on paper\, 245 x 152 cm\, 2025.  Photography Credit: Ros Kavanagh

SUMMARY:Irish Film Institute Documentary Festival
DESCRIPTION:We love an IFI Festival and this is always one of their must sees. The annual celebration of non-fiction filmmaking takes place from Wednesday 10th to Sunday 14th September\, bringing together bold voices\, urgent topics\, and inventive forms\, to present a cutting edge mix of screenings\, panel discussions\, and public interviews. It’s impossible to pick out highlights but music lovers (and performers) of a certain age are bound to find many touchstones in Frank Shouldice’s Once We Were Punks and How To Build A Library\, an inspirational triumph over adversity from Kenya in which the filmmakers document the quest to transform the formerly whites-only\, colonial-era McMillan Memorial Library into a vibrant cultural hub for a new generation of Africans. The hot ticket is bound to be the Thurs Sept 11th screening of Gerry Adams: A Ballymurphy Man\, to hear Adams’ uncensored perspectives on the conflict\, a life spanning war and transition to peace\, and an ongoing campaign towards Irish unity. It’s followed by a Q&A with Director Trisha Ziff and Adams\, hosted by Betty Purcell. \nIFI\, 6 Eustace St\, D2. Sept 10th – 14th. Info & Tickets: ifi.ie

SUMMARY:Black Church Print Studio Presents The Soft Fall of Land
DESCRIPTION:This autumn sees Black Church Print Studio present its new exhibition\, The Soft Fall of Land\, curated by Ciara Hickey. \nThis exhibition brings together new work by Bassam Issa Al-Sabah\, Sighle Bhreathnach-Cashell\, Chloe Brenan\, Aisling Conroy\, Grace Ryan and Soft Fiction Projects. It considers the idea of Utopia and examines the pursuit of this imagined\, impossible and aspirational state from a range of perspectives. The artworks in the exhibition oscillate between escapism and activism\, fantasy and instruction for creating an alternative\, better world. \nSighle Bhreathnach-Cashell and Bassam Issa al-Sabah have each made a new series of prints directing us into dense\, imagined worlds\, created from a personal lexicon of symbols drawn from the artists’ history\, experience and critical response to the humanitarian\, social and ecological issues pervading contemporary life. \nAl-Sabah’s monochromatic prints\, made during his Process Residency at Black Church Studios\, evoke imagery from his moving image works and installations\, where sublime\, seductive digital landscapes offer speculative worlds in which dystopian and utopian scenarios meet and intersect. Bhreathnach-Cashell\, known for her immersive installations and activist work has created a new series of aquatint etchings\, ‘Ulster Cycles’. The work translates years of the artist’s unseen drawings and depict mimetic figures using Celtic\, biological and architectural imagery\, conjuring contemporary fables and cautionary tales. \nFor Grace Ryan and Chloe Brenan\, two studio members at Black Church Print Studio\, the invitation to think about Utopian ideals led them to a close examination of the natural world. Ryan will create a sculptural composition in the gallery based on Ikebana—the ancient Japanese art of flower arrangement rooted in balance\, asymmetry\, and the harmony between humans and nature. \nChloe Brenan’s current work is focused on the microcosm of an orchard in Carlow that is located beside her family home. Originally created as a colonial project to order and control the land\, the orchard is now overgrown\, the traces of colonial past are muted by the unabetted growth of weeds and shrubs over decades. The artist has used Super 8 photography to mark the process of observing the orchard and acknowledging the small changes and diversity of plant life as dictated by time\, climate and chance. Brenan’s work in this exhibition represents the first and last frames of a roll of film on which she photographed the orchard\, the edges of which are singed\, capturing the moment that an image is simultaneously created and extinguished. \nBlack Church Print Studio member Aisling Conroy continues her exploration of sound and cymatics\, the study of vibrational phenomena. This new work comprises a grid of 40 prints representing the 40 Chladni plates\, a methodology developed by Ernst Chladni in 1787 as a visual manifestation of sound vibrations\, looking at the patterns produced by sounds on flat plates made by a bow. The work offers an invitation to think about the invisible forces that shape our reality and consider the possibilities of new languages and systems for understanding and grappling with the unknown. \nSoft Fiction Projects (Alessia Cargnelli and Emily McFarland) are an initiative that produce printed and digital matter to explore archives of underrepresented voices\, oppositional histories and geopolitical narratives. For the exhibition they have produced a free print that can be taken by visitors. The print is based on Women’s News\, a Belfast collective-run publication active between 1984 and 2011\, who used the medium of print matter as a method for generating common ground\, sharing experiences and encouraging community building. This leaflet uses DIY approaches to archival material\, collected from MayDay Rooms\, as a way to reimagine and revisit this history.\nThe exhibition continues at The Library Project until Saturday 27 September 2025. Opening hours: Mon – Fri 11 am – 6 pm\, Sat 12 – 6 pm.

SUMMARY:Celebrating Traveller Women's Voices with Kitty Cassidy Helen Hutchinson & Rosie McCarthy
DESCRIPTION:Poster Fish Promotions presents a celebration of Traveller women’s voices in conversation\, poetry and song with Kitty Cassidy\, Helen Hutchinson and Rosie McCarthy. The event takes place from 2-3pm on Sunday 24 August in Smithfield Square\, Dublin 7 as part of the DCC Dublin City Fleadh.\n\nKitty Cassidy made her name in the traditional music community in Ireland and the UK through field recordings made by Alen MacWeeney in late 1960s. The album Whisht!: Irish Traveller Folktales & Songs – The Cassidys\, 1967\, featuring a selection of these recordings was later released in 2002. This brought Kitty’s voice to a new generation of singers and song collectors where she proved influential with artists such as Lisa O’Neill and Radie Peat.\n\nA collector of songs in her own right\, Kitty grew up in a musical family steeped in tradition. Her father\, Johnny Cassidy\, was a noted storyteller\, and her mother had a store of songs and a beautiful voice and often sang in public.\n\nNow 85\, she recently performed at Misleor festival of nomadic cultures in 2023 and featured in the RTE documentary Songlines last year.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nKitty will be joined by poet Helen Hutchinson and singer Rosie McCarthy.\n\nHelen Hutchinson is a lifelong activist and poet. Co-founder of Pavee Point\, much of Helen’s work reflects the Traveller way of life and the discrimination that her community suffers. It also reflects the resilience of the community as her work gives voice to pride in Traveller identity and also celebrates the Traveller language. Her poetry collection\, ‘From The Dirt Lane to the Open Roads’\, was published in 2024.\n\nRosie McCarthy is a young sean-nós singer and actor from West Cork. Combining her Traveller heritage with her love of singing\, her beautiful voice has power and a depth of emotion that is striking in someone so young. Rosie also appeared in RTE’s Songlines and has performed at Misleor festival of nomadic cultures.\nThe event takes place from 2-3pm on Sunday 24 August on Smithfield Square as part of the DCC Dublin City Fleadh. \n\n\nThis is a free event\, but space is limited.

SUMMARY:The Wild Geeze Present - The Hoes of Tralee
DESCRIPTION:After two years of cult chaos and glitter-soaked glory\, The Hoes of Tralee makes its theatre debut at The Sugar Club on August 22nd. Hosted by cabaret’s most chaotic duo\, Joe on the Dolan and Linda Farten\, the show promises a night of pure camp\, wild talent\, and county pride like you’ve never experienced before. The Hoes of Tralee is a no-holds-barred variety show celebrating Ireland’s rich underworld of alternative talent — drag\, comedy\, performance art\, and feral beauty pageantry collide in one unhinged evening. \nThe 2025 Hoe lineup boasts a glittering mess of excellence. Representing Kilkenny is Kate Moylan\, full of marble-town mystique and pure hurler energy. From Louth\, Aurora Divine arrives with high drag glamour and a personal vendetta. Galway’s Daria de Colette brings elegance\, edge and several cursed props. Donegal has dispatched Marian Mary the 6th\, a deeply devout diva with unfinished business. Meg Reilly\, aka Few Cans\, travels all the way from Australia to show the locals how chaos is truly done. And from Cork\, Hannah Hoops whirls in with a hoola-hoop and a chip on her shoulder. \nStill untouchable\, still unbothered\, and still coasting on last year’s win\, reigning Hoe Miss South Dublin Patsy Pleasure returns not to compete — but to judge you\, spiritually. \nThis year’s judging panel includes Sexy Tadhg\, and Margaret O’Connor. Dress code is ‘Hoe Formal’ – glitter\, mesh\, county sashes\, Eurovision trauma\, and absolutely no emotional stability. \nBring your flags. Bring your banners. Cheer for your county’s Hoe like your life depends on it. \nDoors open at 7PM\, show begins at 8PM\, followed by an After Party featuring DJ Born in the 90s (aka Laura Lavelle). \nTickets available here.

SUMMARY:Vertigo 67 Film Conference And Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Vertig67 Festival celebrates the collaboration between Alfred Hitchcock and Bernard Herrmann on their masterpiece Vertigo. Kicking off with a special 4k screening of the 1958 classic film Vertigo starring James Stewart and Kim Novak in the Lighthouse Cinema in Dublin on Tuesday 12 August at 8pm\, the evening also features a free introductory talk before the movie screening.\n\n\n \nFestival proceedings then move over to the Trinity Long Room HUB in Trinity College Dublin from Wednesday 13 – Friday 15 August for three more days of presentations\, talks\, interviews and panel discussions\, including a number of presentations with a focus on the music score of Vertigo written by Bernard Herrmann. Interestingly\, Vertigo was not favourably received by either critics or audiences on on its initial release\, due to its complicated plot and deviation from the typical Hollywood romantic love story/thriller that Hitchcock had made his name. However\, the passage of time has seen Vertigo growing in appeal\, and it is now considered one of Hitchcock’s most personal films. The disturbing themes of obsession and casting against type of the traditionally wholesome James Stewart\, as a disturbed and obsessed detective trying to fashion Kim Novak into the woman he once loved\, has fascinated audiences\, filmmakers and academics for decades. \n\n\nFor details for tickets and times of events check out the Vertigo Festival website.

SUMMARY:A Misanthrope
DESCRIPTION:Performed entirely in rhyming verse\, this ‘comedy of bad manners’ highlights the absurdities of 9-to-5 life\, packed with oversized egos and nonsensical management. An adaptation of Molière’s original work\, seventeenth-century France is reimagined into FRANS\, a modern Silicon Docks megacorp full of corporate crusaders. Caught in a tangle of HR and office politics\, Alceste must navigate the workplace alongside his scorned ex-lover and co-worker Célimène\, who’s plotting a way out of the cubicle. Written by Matt Minnicino and brought to life by director-designer duo Marc Atkinson Borrull and Molly O’Cathain\, ‘A Misanthrope’ delivers sharp satire\, office shenanigans and tech titan takedowns.   \nSmock Alley Theatre  \nJuly 17th – Aug 2nd  \nTickets: smockalley.com  \n

SUMMARY:Kith & Kin: The Quilts of Gee’s Bend
DESCRIPTION:The Irish Museum of Modern Art presents Kith & Kin: The Quilts of Gee’s Bend\, Ireland’s first exhibition of a renowned 200-year tradition. The Gee’s Bend Quiltmakers\, a group of African American women from a small Alabama community\, create artistically and politically significant quilts that celebrate both African American heritage and the strength and creativity of women in the face of systemic oppression. \nThe bold and abstract quilts are made from recycled fabrics and are deeply rooted in African American textile traditions. They also represent the resilience and self-sufficiency of the quiltmakers\, who gained attention during the Civil Rights movement and became symbols of Black empowerment and cultural pride. \nThe exhibition is on display now until October 27\, 2025. Admission is free.  \nIrish Museum of Modern Art  \nUntil Oct 27th  \nFree admission.  \nimma.ie
