SUMMARY:Between the stones
DESCRIPTION:‘Noh’ is classical Japanese theatre which combines dance\, drama\, music\, poetic text\, exquisite costumes and masks into a highly aesthetic form of art that has been performed continuously for 650 years. This performance demonstration talk is designed to introduce audiences to the key elements of noh and to have a close up and interactive experience of how a new noh is developed from ‘page to stage’. The focus of the new noh\, Between the Stones\, is ‘from tragic loss to peace’. \nIt explores how the burden of grief turns into an understanding and celebration of life\, death\, beauty and love; and the transformative power of gardens to nurture and heal the soul… \nIt also uniquely brings together three Japanese cultural forms – noh\, karesansui gardens and furin (wind chimes). The professional noh actor\, Kinue Oshima\, the composer\, Richard Emmert\, and the author of this new two-act English language noh drama\, Jannette Cheong\, will share key aspects of how this new noh will be transformed from the poetic text to the stage production using traditional noh techniques. This is the third noh performing arts collaboration between Richard Emmert and Jannette Cheong and the second with the Oshima family following the acclaimed success of Pagoda (2009 European Tour\, 2011 Asia Tour). Come and join this unique team to have a deeper understanding of the 650 year-old theatre of noh\, and learn about the second  important phase of this rare\, new collaborative noh project. \ndlr Mill Theatre Dundrum Town Centre Friday 8th February 7.30pm \n

SUMMARY:Black Midi
DESCRIPTION:Rowing against the obvious tide is working in Black Midi’s favour. They have left few sonic breadcrumbs to date with no tracks on Spotify\, scant write-ups and just two videos – a performance in the Windmill venue in Brixton a year ago and a recording from Flesh & Bone studios in Hackney. What we do know is this ‘underground’ tag is working in favour of this four piece. Their sound is glitchy noisenik from what we’ve heard. They are signed to Rough Trade Management so in relatively adept hands. Next best thing? You decide.

SUMMARY:Niamh Barry: Light on Earth
DESCRIPTION:Barry creates unique light sculptures in bronze and LED. An NCAD graduate in 1991\, Barry’s work dates from lighting commissions for the Cellar Bar in the Merrion Hotel in 1997 right up to a recent one entitled Model of Vessel Scape which can be seen in the lobby of the Central Bank. Branching into ‘edge lit’ Barry blurs the lines between design\, luminism and sculptural lighting. There’s elegance\, beauty and intrigue to her work which will may make you reconsider our fixation on exposed bulbs being considered the height of now. \nhttps://youtu.be/563uxR9K2tg

SUMMARY:Poolside
DESCRIPTION:You may not know but if you have any modicum of self-respecting cool\, then you’ll have lapped up Poolside’s cover of Harvest Moon (28m Spotify plays) whether known or unbeknownst to yourself. You might have been asking for a pour of Albariño at the time and that would be perfectly ok too. This LA duo of Jeffrey Paradise and Filip Nikolic have released two albums date – Pacific Standard Time and Heat – both creating more of a ripple than wave effect. Channeling parts ELO and Phoenix\, their sunny sounds are just the type of inflatable sonic lilo the city needs at the end of a dreary month.

SUMMARY:Flora Fauna Project
DESCRIPTION:This immersive stage experience explores our relationship with nature and the environment\, cause and effect tipping point and the fear of the wild through eyes of botany and 80’s sci-fi. Created by dance artist and choreographer Maria Nilsson Waller along with The Sei\, her electronic project with Stace Gill\, Flora Fauna Project premiered in Sweden last year. It looks at the body as a way to return to nature and how empathy is triggered for each other and the earth.

SUMMARY:Lil Mosey
DESCRIPTION:On the eve of turning 17\, Lil Mosey turns up in town. What we have gleaned from our exhaustive google research of this ‘sensation’ is that Pull Up is his banger single with over 20 million YouTube views. Each track on his debut album Northsbest comes with an explicit lyrics warning. His Christmas single K for Christmas informed us that ‘Hunnid K’ is a Vape Juice. We’re gonna sound all Tipper Gore by stating that Lil Mosey sadly sounds like the voice of the next generation content with the degradation of women in the hip-hop lyrics game. Don’t expect to bump into too many Totally Dublin readers tonight. Do expect him on a Longitude line-up.

SUMMARY:Fortune
DESCRIPTION:You are out for dinner in a quiet Asian restaurant\, sat next to the only other people there. These people are discussing what to do with the family estate…VERY loudly. Everyone has a family member who isn’t afraid to air their dirty laundry. This family has three. A brother and two sisters meet to discuss how best to divide their deceased parent’s possessions\, what could possibly go wrong? \nSome might argue conversations like these are best done in a private space\, for the wellbeing of these squabbling siblings perhaps a public place is just the ticket. Jill McKeagney\, Tengu Theatre & Discotekken invite you to FORTUNE\, a unique dining and theatre experience\, located in a relaxed environment in one of Dublin’s favourite restaurants. \nAudience members will receive one of Yamamori’s renowned bento boxes and a house cocktail\, while they dine alongside the cast as this hilarious family drama unfolds. None of them will leave until they get what they deserve. \nWritten & directed by: Jill McKeagney \nProduced by: Emer Kenny \nCast: Robert Downes\, Alison Kinlan\, Hannah Osborne\, Larissa Santiago. \nWednesday 23rd January / 7-9pm Thursday 24th January / 7-9pm Friday 25th January / 6-8pm + admission to Discotekken afterparty Friday 25th January / 9-11pm (SOLD OUT) + admission to Discotekken afterparty \n

SUMMARY:Everyday Life in a Syrian Village
DESCRIPTION:Considered a landmark in the history of Arab cinema and banned in Syria to this day\, the documentary Everyday Life in a Syrian Village (1974) is director Omar Amiralay’s critique of the Syrian government’s agricultural and land reforms in the mid-twentieth century\, and influential on the making of Manna’s Wild Relatives. \n \nOmar Amiralay (1944 — 5 February 2011) was a Syrian documentary film director and prominent civil society activist. He is noted for the strong political criticism in his films and played a prominent role in the events of the Damascus Spring of 2000. Born in Damascus in 1944\, Amiralay studied in Paris at Théâtre de la Ville between 1966-7 and later at La Fémis\, before returning to Syria in 1970. He thus had a different artistic formation from the majority of Syrian film-makers\, who studied in the Soviet Union or in Eastern Europe. His films include a trilogy of documentaries concerning the Tabqa Dam on the Euphrates. The first\, Film Essay on the Euphrates Dam (1970)\, is a tribute to Syria’s greatest development project\, but the second and third take a more critical approach. Everyday Life in a Syrian Village (1974) shows the dam’s ambiguous impact on the lives of ordinary people in a nearby village\, and portrays their relationship with the authorities\, seen as distant and disconnected from them. Amiralay revisited the region in 2003 with A Flood in Baath Country\, which contains trenchant political criticism (it had the working title Fifteen reasons why I hate the Baath Party).

SUMMARY:Walk for Me
DESCRIPTION:This high octane coming of age story sees Kate Shanley Brennan (Miss Kate) flexing her impressive vocal chords and acting range. Walk for Me brings us on Mary Jane’s journey from ‘The Wes’ to the nightclubs of New York. With Handsome Paddy on stage mixing an ever-changing soundtrack and the bubblegum pop of arresting visuals by Johnny Brennan (Bobofunk)\, there’s an energy which propels this tale into the underground and back to surface so we can draw breath again. \nWith original compositions by Adam Fogarty (MathMan)\, Walk for Me hotwires our sluggish January circuit boards with lashings of sex\, drugs\, uppers and downers. Kate’s inventive use of her tracksuit top alone is worthy of extreme respect. On the flip side\, we overheard one critic simply say: “Dublin Old School has a lot to answer for”. \nSee Kate’s stellar fashion shoot ‘Persona’ in the current issue of TD here. \nRuns until January 26

SUMMARY:Wolfgang Tillmans - Rebuilding the Future
DESCRIPTION:Tillmans’ first ever solo exhibition in Ireland is truly a tentpole occasion for all the cool kids. This photographer/artist earned his stripes in the early 1990s chronicling Gen-X and rave culture. His images captured the sweaty truths of youth and freedom\, often out of the public gaze. Now having just turned 50\, Tillmans is truly established with shows in the likes of the Tate Modern and a major retrospective in MOMA in 2021. His varied portfolio includes working with Frank Ocean\, actively campaigning against Brexit\, designing for the English National Opera and AV collaborations with electronic producer Powell. In other words\, he can kind of do whatever he wants. This should prove to be a popular blockbuster.  \nCheck out this recent New Yorker profile. \nPhotograph of Tillmans by Collier Schorr for The New Yorker \nExhibition runs until March 10.

SUMMARY:Amplify Her
DESCRIPTION:In announcing their 2019 line-up\, Primavera Sound stated that they had\, at last\, achieved a 50/50 gender balance across its 226 names from headliners Solange\, Robyn\, Cardi B\, Janelle Monáe and Erykah Badu through to lesser knowns such as Tirzah and Georgia Anne Muldrow. #thenewnormal is how they called it.  Most recently IMRO (the Irish Music Rights Organisation) have partnered with Keychange to achieve this balance by 2022. (details here) Already working on this is The Gash Collective who have been pushing for the half light to be fully shone on our shores. They are hosting a CDJ & Vinyl workshop\, a screening of Amplify Her\, a documentary exploring women within the electronic music scene followed by a panel discussion on learnings for here.

DESCRIPTION:Brian Deady had been something of a well kept secret at home in Ireland until his song Clap Both My Hands became one of the most played Irish songs of 2016 and reached No.1 in the Spotify UK Viral charts. \nHis recent single ‘Get on My Knees’ has also featured in the hit American TV show ‘Lucifer’. \n \nConjuring up strong gospel influences\, at times the Irishman sounds more like he was raised in the Deep South than as one of 10 kids in Cork and his rich\, soulful voice comes with a contemporary R&B edge.

SUMMARY:The Road to the East
DESCRIPTION:Judith Mok and the Khoshravesh brothers                                – \nIn the 16th century the Jews were expelled from Spain\, and scattered East to the Ottoman Empire\, North Africa and even further afield. They took with them the Spanish language and the music of medieval Spain. Down through the centuries they interacted and mingled with the music of the East\, to produce what is now known as Sephardic music. The Dutch soprano of part Sephardic descent\, Judith Mok\, has been exploring and performing this repertoire for decades. \nThe Khoshravesh brothers\, now based in Paris\, studied classical and traditional music in their native Iran. They have joined Judith Mok in a programme which mixes the many traditions of West and East\, and explores their similarities and differences\, the cross-fertilisations. They will be performing together Sephardic songs\, classical Persian music\, and in addition\, they will perform other music from the 16th century\, such as John Dowland\, using traditional instruments. \nJudith Mok – Soprano \nNima Khoshravesh – Setar \nPouya Khoshravesh – Kamancheh \nMani Khoshravesh – Ney\, Damam and Oud \n
