SUMMARY:In Conversation: Iván Repila + Pascale Baker
DESCRIPTION:Multicultural literary voices come together for In Conversation\, a new series of events at Instituto Cervantes which provides a platform for some of the most interesting voices in literature in Spanish and in English language. \nThe series kicks off this Thursday February 28th with Spanish Writer Iván Repila in conversation with Pascale Baker\, lecturer in Latin American Studies at UCD\,\n \nFrom a fight for survival to feminism or the role of social media\, Spanish writer Iván Repila’s universe submerges the reader in current and timeless topics to reflect on our society’s concerns with an ability to move as well as raising awareness. Instituto Cervantes have invited him to Dublin to open “In Conversation”\, a new series of events to provide a platform to some of the most interesting voices in literature in Spanish and in English language. \nThe Bilbao writer\, editor and cultural events manager will be in conversation with Pascale Baker\, lecturer in Latin American Studies at UCD\, whose research goes from banditry in Latin American literature and culture from the 19th century to the present day. \nRepila’s stories pay special attention to social changes and human behavior\, through placing his characters in stirring and complex situations. Translated into eight languages\, his novel The Boy Who Stole Attila’s Horse\, a fable of two brothers trapped in a well\, was described by the late Irish Times literary critic Eileen Battersby as “high art\, an imaginative allegorical work of breathtaking yet restrained lyric power”. Repila’s third novel Prólogo para una guerra (Prologue for a War)\,  presented another fable around social movements\, and in his new novel El aliado (The Ally) he humorously presents a provocative story about feminism and the role that men should play within the movement. \n“In Conversation”\, a new series from Instituto Cervantes is designed to prompt discussion among guests about their more recent works. The series proposes an immersion in the day-to-day of the creation process and the current affairs in Spain and Ireland with the purpose of sieving through the similarities and possible connections and differences. Join in and discover a new way to tell the history we are living today! \nThursday 28th February\, 6pm Instituto Cervantes \nFree. Booking recommended. \n https://cultura.cervantes.es/dublin/en/cambios-sociales-de-hoy-/125082

SUMMARY:Massive Attack: Mezzanine XX1
DESCRIPTION:Mezzanine is Massive Attack’s third album and was released in April 1998. it marked a departure from the more laidback offerings of Blue Lines and Protection with darker undercurrents in their triphop explorations. Teardrop\, Angel and Inertia Creeps remain standard-bearer tracks from Massive Attack’s long-standing career. This show promises “custom audio reconstructed from the original samples and influences” in what Robert Del Naja promises to be “our own personalised nostalgia nightmare head trip.”

SUMMARY:The Country Girls
DESCRIPTION:It wasn’t the easiest of starts to 2019 for the Abbey crew. To have been unable to address\, defuse\nor prevent the growing unease of 300 leading practitioners over employment opportunities\, or lack\nthereof\, was a tad embarrassing. There will be an air of relief then that at least the adaptation of\nEdna O’Brien’s seminal debut novel first published in 1960 is stacked with Irish talent such as\nGrace Collender\, Muiris Crowley and Lola Pettigrew. Co-director of the Abbey Graham McLaren\nassumes the mantle of director for this one. If you listen closely you might hear a naysayer mutter\nthe words ‘double-jobbing’ under their breath at the interval. \nThe Abbey Theatre\, Saturday February 23 to Saturday April 6\, €17-€40

SUMMARY:Dublin International Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The annual festival rolls out the red carpet for a slew of Irish and international releases. As always\,\nit’s a category mixture of first glimpse and overlooked\, yet worthy of attention. It opens with John\nButler’s well received Papi Chulo which pivots around an unexpected friendship between an\nalienated weatherman and a middle-aged Latino migrant worker in LA. Others worth catching\ninclude Bo Burham’s Eight Grade which will see him in attendance also. Greta\, Neil Jordan’s latest\nthriller starring an ever dependable Isabelle Hupert\, hopefully marks a long overdue return to form\nfor the auteur. Fresh from Sundance is Jonah Hill’s directorial debut Mid90s while Alice\nRohrwacher’s Happy As Lazzaro is a charming Italian comedy/drama and winner of best\nscreenplay at Cannes. Gaza\, Land Without God (on Mannix Flynn) and What Time is Death? (on\nthe KLF) spearhead the Irish documentary programme. \nWednesday February 20 to Sunday March 3 \ndiff.ie \n  \n

SUMMARY:77 Million Paintings
DESCRIPTION:77 Million Paintings is Eno’s ‘generative art’ piece with endless variations and possibilities\, hence the title. It is also one of the most calming experiences to be found in the city. You can sit on a sofa taking in his visual music whilst watching the barely perceptible shifts in shade and nuance in front of you. In some respects\, 77 Million Paintings is reminiscent of the stained glass windows of Harry Clarke. An essential headspace time out if you can spare 30 minutes.

SUMMARY:The Tide
DESCRIPTION:Whirligig Theatre and the New Theatre are delighted to present The Tide a new play by Tara Maria Lovett. The cast consists of Killian Filan and Ann Russell. It is directed by Pat Nolan and produced by Sine Lynch. Together they create a black comedy about the lengths this unlikely pair will go to\, to make their dreams a reality. The Tide is set in rural Ireland where seemingly ordinary people who never did anything “out of the way” decide that change must come. They use a Nissan Micra and the memory of a dead goldfish to hatch a plot to make their dreams come true. Once they start on the journey there is no turning back. Once they start they have to go where the tide takes them. \nThe New Theater 19th Feb – 2nd March 2019\, 7.30pm\, €14-€17

SUMMARY:Microdisney
DESCRIPTION:You might need to ask an elder about Microdisney. They were a distinctly Irish slice of the ‘80s –\nCork’s answer to Something Happens and Ireland’s answer to Prefab Sprout\, or something like\nthat. Formed in Cork\, in 1980\, by Cathal Coughlan and Sean O’Hagan\, Microdisney are best\nknown for their track Town to Town and were signed to both Virgin and Rough Trade.\nThey chronicled the ‘80s as lived in worn denim and grim bedsits\, they supported The Fall.\nCoughlan and O’Hagan went on to form Fatima Mansions and The High Llamas\, respectively. Vox\nMagazine vol. 5 in the early eighties stated that “their behaviour is often mistaken as ‘uncool’\namongst the more hip dublin punter come intellectual” Let’s hope they cut the mustard in the\ncapital tonight. \nMonday February 18\, Vicar Street\, €46.86

SUMMARY:Danny Forde
DESCRIPTION:In an intimate performance at the beautiful Fumbally stables\, Danny Forde invites you to enjoy an evening of music from the soul. \nDanny will also be previewing songs from his debut EP release\, What Else Is There? – an exploration of love in its many forms and facets\, from romantic to universal to familial and beyond. Vocal harmony\, string quartets\, fingerstyle guitar\, and healing sounds feature strongly in all his music. SUMMARY:Neneh Cherry
DESCRIPTION:Neneh Cherry returned with Broken Politics\, her fifth studio album last year and her second one to be\nproduced by Kieran ‘Four Tet’ Hebden. You can hear the cross-over tinkerings from his New Energy\nalbum on intro track Fallen Leaves and it informs most of the album in an unintrusive manner. Cherry’s\nmellow\, yet incisive\, musings are embellished by delicate touches such as a xylophone on\nSynchronised Devotion. It might\, on occasion\, feel like a Sonos speaker soundtrack best enjoyed with\nfloor-to-ceiling windows looking out on a forest. And then Natural Skin Deep lands – the dream\nmarriage of their collaborations with an Ornette Coleman. Buffalo Stance from Raw Like Sushi dropped\n30 years ago. SUMMARY:Prix Pictet
DESCRIPTION:Now in its seventh cycle\, the Prix Pictet is the world’s leading prize for photography and sustainability. It is unique in its attempt to use the power of photography to deepen our understanding of changes taking place in the world. \nIrish photographer Richard Mosse is among those on display having scooped the top prize for his series of photos titled Heat Maps\, 2016-17\, which is being shown in Ireland for the first time. \nMosse shows us his large panoramas of refugee camps across Europe. They are taken with a military grade thermographic camera made to detect human heat from up to 30 kilometres away in either daylight or the dark. The panorama is eerie and provokes powerful and complicated responses to the viewer. \nThis extended run of the Prix Pictet ends today. \nMax Crowley

SUMMARY:Between the stones
DESCRIPTION:‘Noh’ is classical Japanese theatre which combines dance\, drama\, music\, poetic text\, exquisite costumes and masks into a highly aesthetic form of art that has been performed continuously for 650 years. This performance demonstration talk is designed to introduce audiences to the key elements of noh and to have a close up and interactive experience of how a new noh is developed from ‘page to stage’. The focus of the new noh\, Between the Stones\, is ‘from tragic loss to peace’. \nIt explores how the burden of grief turns into an understanding and celebration of life\, death\, beauty and love; and the transformative power of gardens to nurture and heal the soul… \nIt also uniquely brings together three Japanese cultural forms – noh\, karesansui gardens and furin (wind chimes). The professional noh actor\, Kinue Oshima\, the composer\, Richard Emmert\, and the author of this new two-act English language noh drama\, Jannette Cheong\, will share key aspects of how this new noh will be transformed from the poetic text to the stage production using traditional noh techniques. This is the third noh performing arts collaboration between Richard Emmert and Jannette Cheong and the second with the Oshima family following the acclaimed success of Pagoda (2009 European Tour\, 2011 Asia Tour). Come and join this unique team to have a deeper understanding of the 650 year-old theatre of noh\, and learn about the second  important phase of this rare\, new collaborative noh project. \ndlr Mill Theatre Dundrum Town Centre Friday 8th February 7.30pm \n

SUMMARY:Black Midi
DESCRIPTION:Rowing against the obvious tide is working in Black Midi’s favour. They have left few sonic breadcrumbs to date with no tracks on Spotify\, scant write-ups and just two videos – a performance in the Windmill venue in Brixton a year ago and a recording from Flesh & Bone studios in Hackney. What we do know is this ‘underground’ tag is working in favour of this four piece. Their sound is glitchy noisenik from what we’ve heard. They are signed to Rough Trade Management so in relatively adept hands. Next best thing? You decide.

SUMMARY:Niamh Barry: Light on Earth
DESCRIPTION:Barry creates unique light sculptures in bronze and LED. An NCAD graduate in 1991\, Barry’s work dates from lighting commissions for the Cellar Bar in the Merrion Hotel in 1997 right up to a recent one entitled Model of Vessel Scape which can be seen in the lobby of the Central Bank. Branching into ‘edge lit’ Barry blurs the lines between design\, luminism and sculptural lighting. There’s elegance\, beauty and intrigue to her work which will may make you reconsider our fixation on exposed bulbs being considered the height of now. \nhttps://youtu.be/563uxR9K2tg

DESCRIPTION:You may not know but if you have any modicum of self-respecting cool\, then you’ll have lapped up Poolside’s cover of Harvest Moon (28m Spotify plays) whether known or unbeknownst to yourself. You might have been asking for a pour of Albariño at the time and that would be perfectly ok too. This LA duo of Jeffrey Paradise and Filip Nikolic have released two albums date – Pacific Standard Time and Heat – both creating more of a ripple than wave effect. Channeling parts ELO and Phoenix\, their sunny sounds are just the type of inflatable sonic lilo the city needs at the end of a dreary month.

SUMMARY:Lil Mosey
DESCRIPTION:On the eve of turning 17\, Lil Mosey turns up in town. What we have gleaned from our exhaustive google research of this ‘sensation’ is that Pull Up is his banger single with over 20 million YouTube views. Each track on his debut album Northsbest comes with an explicit lyrics warning. His Christmas single K for Christmas informed us that ‘Hunnid K’ is a Vape Juice. We’re gonna sound all Tipper Gore by stating that Lil Mosey sadly sounds like the voice of the next generation content with the degradation of women in the hip-hop lyrics game. Don’t expect to bump into too many Totally Dublin readers tonight. Do expect him on a Longitude line-up.
