SUMMARY:Conor Walsh - The Lucid
DESCRIPTION:Mayo pianist Conor Walsh tragically passed away three years ago. At the time\, the Swinford native was working on a release of long-form classical-contemporary piano-rooted music. His family and friends are posthumously releasing The Lucid and paying tribute to his staggering talent. A host of artists\, musicians and friends will perform works dedicated to his memory including Crash Ensemble and Meltybrains? “We wanted to remind people of all the different aspects of Conor; as a brother\, friend\, composer\, and artist\,” says his sister Fiona. “The subtle approach to this album will leave his fans in awe of his simplistic beauty.” \nDecember 2015 interview here \n \nPhoto: Mark McGuinness \n

SUMMARY:From St Patrick to St Poetrick: Focus on Galician Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Galicia and Ireland share legends\, climate\, music\, culture and even chromosomes\, or so it’s said. This Thursday\, March 14th\, they will also share verses in Focus Galician Poetry. The Instituto Cervantes joins St. Patrick’s Festival to celebrate the patron saint’s day with the reading of poetry in Galician\, Spanish and English. \nConsidered one of the most representative writers in Galician language nowadays and a revolutionary in the region’s contemporary literature\, Manuel Rivas will read poems for his most recently published collection in English The Mouth of the Earth (Shearsman Press\, 2019). Irish poet Lorna Shaughnessy\, the translator of this collection will voice the particular universe of this multi-awarded author. Shaughnessy has published four poetry collections of her own and lectures in Hispanic Studies in NUI\, Galway. \nFor Manuel Rivas\, words are the most sensitive of creatures.  He evokes memory as a source of both nostalgia and future\, and it has been a predominant theme in all his writing. Manuel Rivas has been published in English both in prose (The Carpenter’s Pencil\, Books Burn Badly) and poetry (From Unknown to Unknown\, The Disappearance of Snow). Translated by Lorna (Shearsman Press)\, this last title was shortlisted for the Popescu Prize in European Poetry Translation in 2014. Join us to transform St Patrick into St Poetrick! \nThe poetry collection ‘The Mouth of the Earth’ will be available for sale (€10) and the author will be signing copies after the panel. \nHosted by editor Tony Frazer\, the event is free in but booking in advance is required. bookings.dublin@cervantes.es. \nInstituto Cervantes (Dublin) – Auditorium. Lincoln House\, 6-16 Lincoln Place\, D2. \nFurther details: https://cultura.cervantes.es/dublin/en/foco-poes%C3%ADa-gallega/124100

SUMMARY:Canaletto and the Art of Venice
DESCRIPTION:‘Just one Canaletto\, give it to me!’ Now that the cheese is dispensed with\, we can take Giovanni Antonio Canal seriously. This 18th Century Venetian painter painted hyper realistic imaginary views (referred to as capricci). He paints grand scenes of the canals of Venice and the Doge’s Palace\, portraying the city’s pageantry and waning traditions of its time. Both colourful and atmospheric\, this exhibition is a loan of a selection of his works from the UK Royal Collection and exhibited among contemporaries of his. Ends March 24

SUMMARY:The Children
DESCRIPTION:Now that everyone in the country has seen The Great Gatsby\, it’s time for The Gate to make way for some fresh productions. Launching their Love and Courage season is Lucy Kirkwood’s The Children\, a cautionary disaster drama built around three retired nuclear scientists. Married couple Hazel (Marie Mullen) and Robin (Seán McGinley) live in isolation until an old friend Rose (Ger Ryan) turns up to sow doubt and distrust. Exploring ageing and personal responsibility\, The Children\, which will be directed by Oonagh Murphy\, also meditates on the catastrophic results of human meddling in the natural world. A noteworthy footnote is Mullen and McGinley also are real-life partners who will appear on stage together for the first time in 27 years.  \nUntil March 23

DESCRIPTION:Dispatches from the Frontline of Type & Lettering Design \nIn recent years\, type and lettering design has entered the public consciousness as an art-form unto itself. From this activity\, fresh communities have evolved where skills\, techniques and ideas are shared. Letterbomb will take a cross-section of styles and approaches within this movement\, and investigate a gamut of graphic design modes\, through type and lettering design. The exhibition brings together eighteen sign-painters\, typographers\, graphic designers\, illustrators and graffiti artists. \nUsing the theme of ‘Taboo’ as its subject\, Letterbomb features Ireland’s most prolific and progressive practitioners working in the field. Taboos are things we tacitly understand to be not quite acceptable in a particular setting or community\, yet still people do them anyway. Playfully acknowledging the orthodoxies inherent in typographical disciplines\, the theme of ‘taboo’ provided a space for the participating artists to break rules\, and reimagine form. The works in Letterbomb explores this grey area between acceptable and unacceptable; between legible and illegible; communication and non-communication. \nThis exhibition gathers an array of exciting works by artists & designers working with letters in Dublin & Belfast today. It examines\, investigates and challenges the words we cannot say\, and how actions and expressions sometimes speak louder than their content. The show is a fresh and exciting take on contemporary type and lettering design. It offers its audience a unique opportunity to experience lettering\, language and taboos in a visual and inventive way. \nExhibiting Artists: ACHES\, Emmalene Blake\, Syd Bluett\, Ror Conaty\, Dave D’arcy\, Robin Fuller\, Stephen Heffernan\, Meagan Hyland\, Mack Signs\, Fiona McDonnell\, Holly Pereira\, Horhay Ruíz\, Richard Seabroooke\, Jacky Sheridan\, Signs of Power\, Steve Simpson\, VENTS\, and Wonders & Signs \nExhibition Opening Hours: \nMonday – Thursday 9.30am – 5.30pm | Friday 9.30am – 3.30pm | Saturday 11am – 4pm

SUMMARY:Fiesta de Carnaval
DESCRIPTION:Often referred to as ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’ Carnaval falls just before Lent and Brazil being mainly a Catholic country like us\, they traditionally abstain from certain foods in the run-up to Easter and throw a big old party to celebrate\, making our pancake party literally pale by comparison. Carnival celebrations typically involve parades\, costumes\, music and of course plenty of food and drinks. So in keeping with the vibrant colours\, lively music and endless spectacle are part of Carnaval in Brazil\, Wigwam will be hosting a buzzing weekend full of bands\, DJs\, dancers and of course\, Feijoada\, Brazil’s traditional black bean and pork stew. \nThe new(ish) menu at Wigwam is a modern take on traditional Brazilian cooking with fresh flavours and street food vibes all served alongside one of the best-stocked rum bars in town. Plenty of Brazilian staples like farofa and cassava are available intertwined with local Irish produce. Head chef Pedro Ferraz has channelled his Brazilain roots and love of experimental cooking to come up with a buzzy menu that should hit plenty of taste spots.

SUMMARY:In Conversation: Iván Repila + Pascale Baker
DESCRIPTION:Multicultural literary voices come together for In Conversation\, a new series of events at Instituto Cervantes which provides a platform for some of the most interesting voices in literature in Spanish and in English language. \nThe series kicks off this Thursday February 28th with Spanish Writer Iván Repila in conversation with Pascale Baker\, lecturer in Latin American Studies at UCD\,\n \nFrom a fight for survival to feminism or the role of social media\, Spanish writer Iván Repila’s universe submerges the reader in current and timeless topics to reflect on our society’s concerns with an ability to move as well as raising awareness. Instituto Cervantes have invited him to Dublin to open “In Conversation”\, a new series of events to provide a platform to some of the most interesting voices in literature in Spanish and in English language. \nThe Bilbao writer\, editor and cultural events manager will be in conversation with Pascale Baker\, lecturer in Latin American Studies at UCD\, whose research goes from banditry in Latin American literature and culture from the 19th century to the present day. \nRepila’s stories pay special attention to social changes and human behavior\, through placing his characters in stirring and complex situations. Translated into eight languages\, his novel The Boy Who Stole Attila’s Horse\, a fable of two brothers trapped in a well\, was described by the late Irish Times literary critic Eileen Battersby as “high art\, an imaginative allegorical work of breathtaking yet restrained lyric power”. Repila’s third novel Prólogo para una guerra (Prologue for a War)\,  presented another fable around social movements\, and in his new novel El aliado (The Ally) he humorously presents a provocative story about feminism and the role that men should play within the movement. \n“In Conversation”\, a new series from Instituto Cervantes is designed to prompt discussion among guests about their more recent works. The series proposes an immersion in the day-to-day of the creation process and the current affairs in Spain and Ireland with the purpose of sieving through the similarities and possible connections and differences. Join in and discover a new way to tell the history we are living today! \nThursday 28th February\, 6pm Instituto Cervantes \nFree. To have been unable to address\, defuse\nor prevent the growing unease of 300 leading practitioners over employment opportunities\, or lack\nthereof\, was a tad embarrassing. SUMMARY:77 Million Paintings
DESCRIPTION:77 Million Paintings is Eno’s ‘generative art’ piece with endless variations and possibilities\, hence the title. It is also one of the most calming experiences to be found in the city. You can sit on a sofa taking in his visual music whilst watching the barely perceptible shifts in shade and nuance in front of you. In some respects\, 77 Million Paintings is reminiscent of the stained glass windows of Harry Clarke. An essential headspace time out if you can spare 30 minutes.
