DESCRIPTION:Pallas Projects/Studios\, who have been breaking new ground for Irish visual arts and culture since 1996\, are to showcase the work of Irish contemporary artists in a NYC-style fundraising auction\, with the help of Whyte’s and The Irish Georgian Society. \nThis exciting collaboration between the auction house and the artist-run space will introduce Irish contemporary art – painting\, print\, photography and sculpture – to seasoned auction-goers\, with many affordable works and the chance to secure a choice piece by a major Irish artist\, or to grab a bargain by a future prospect. \nIt also presents a great opportunity for budding collectors to enjoy the auction experience for the first time\, and start a collection of their own with a unique artwork. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nIt will demonstrate the strength and breadth of Irish contemporary art: with renowned Irish painters\, already familiar to the auction house\, alongside internationally-established artists\, who are already selling work through the leading Irish contemporary and international galleries and art-fairs (Frieze\, Art Basel)\, exhibiting at home in museums (IMMA\, The Hugh Lane)\, and far and wide in art biennales (Venice Biennale) and international institutions. \nThe lots include specially created work by Willie Doherty\, twice nominated for the Turner Prize\, and British artist Liam Gillick\, who exhibits regularly in Ireland with Kerlin Gallery and represented Germany in the 53rd Venice Biennale\, both of whom have produced new one-off pieces especially for the occasion. Experience a Spanish-style World Book Day exchanging books and roses in the auditorium. \nPerformances will be provided by the trio of artists formed by Andalusian poet Carmen Camacho; Irish poet and translator Keith Payne and Galician singer-songwriter Su Garrido. \nCarmen Camacho live-writes in Seville\, in her own way\, with a number of poetry collections published (Campo de fuerza\, La mujer del tiempo\, 777 and Arrojada) her trajectory has also dived into flash fiction (Vuelo doméstico) and her wittiness has bloomed in the books of aphorisms  Zona Franca (2016) and Minimás.  \n \nKeith Payne was the Ireland Chair of Poetry Bursary Award winner for 2015-2016\, he has translated several Galician poetry books into English as well as presented his own poetry collections\, and for this event he has translated Camacho’s work\, so the Irish audience can get close to her universe. \nSinger-songwriter Su Garrido will bring the tunes. DESCRIPTION:‘Local’ presents an overview of Pete Smyth’s ongoing photography project documenting aspects of life in Tallaght\, West Dublin. One of Ireland’s leading documentary photographers – Smyth lives in Killinarden in Tallaght. The exhibition brings together his renowned portrait series ‘Traveller’ and ‘View from the Dearth’ shown here for the first time alongside his work charting street and nightlife in and around Tallaght. \nSpanning a period of over 30 years ‘Local’ reflects Smyth’s own political concerns and experiences as a community arts worker and social activist. Smyth has had a level of access to his subjects and a capacity to portray their experiences denied to photographers from outside the community. \nCollectively the works create an intimate portrait that captures bittersweet moments of private reflection and public reverie. Aware of the dynamics and complexities of his dual role of observer and subject\, Smyth’s unsentimental representation of Tallaght and its people makes visible the social and physical transformations the area has undergone. ‘Local’ charts the development of Tallaght from a socially deprived outlying suburb to urban centre with a strong sense of community. \n

DESCRIPTION:This is the big spring photo exhibition – not just in scale\, though 65 of the 135 prints are over two metres in size. It’s a celebration of hometown D1 head Eamonn Doyle showcasing his city street photography trilogy i\, ON and End along with his latest work K. It coincides with the launch of Made in Dublin (Thames & Hudson) which combines his trilogy with new prints and accompanying vignettes by writer Kevin Barry. As part of the St Patrick’s Festival\, it is the fruition of a long-standing friendship and working partnership between Doyle and Karen Walshe and moves on to Fundación Mapfre in Madrid in September.  \nThe opening weekend will also include Made in Dublin – a nine-screen\, surround-sound panoramic created in association with Doyle’s collaborators Niall Sweeney (design) and David Donohoe (sound). His photographs meld with a visceral\, labyrinthine soundtrack\, the city and its people merge and collide\, braced against the light. Giant and diminutive figures stride and stumble\, taking position on a world-stage full of obstacles\, and then all moving together – their constant ebb and flow revealing a collective unconscious dance\, poised on a knife-edge of past and future. Schwefelgelb\, adds to the offering\, bringing their pulsing industrial beats from Berlin. EPs such as Dahinter das Gesicht (Behind the Face) and Den Umgekehrten Atem (The Inverse of Breath) are replete with metallic clangs\, synth stabs and ambient whooshes. DESCRIPTION:This programme of rarely-seen films uses alternative stylistic approaches to explore the Northern Ireland conflict. The images that have come to define the conflict have been primarily those of television and fiction: news reports\, talking head documentaries\, gritty crime movies and human-interest dramas. However\, there is another visual history of the conflict preserved in the lesser-known work of a diverse group of international\, politically militant and formally experimental films of the 1970s and 1980s. \nWhile most could be classed as documentarians\, their innovative formal approaches discourage any complacent acceptance of the ‘real’\, and often highlight how images of Northern Ireland have been manipulated and weaponised by the state and the media. DESCRIPTION:Screened at CineCafé Club\, the powerful and touching Frozen Silence travels to the winter of 1943. In Second World War Russian front\, a serial killer is on the loose within the Blue Division ranks (a body of Spanish volunteer soldiers and military veterans that supported the German troops). Immediately after a murder an investigation is opened and commissioned to soldier Arturo Andrade (Juan Diego Botto)\, who assumes the task with rigor and professionalism and has the help of Sergeant Espinosa (Carmelo Gómez). DESCRIPTION:After the rather brilliant production of Lucy Kirkwood’s The Children last month\, comes the second instalment of The Gate’s Love and Courage season. David Eldridge’s Beginning is a two-hander exploring the challenges of finding love or\, “sozzled loners seek a connection in a tech age\,” as the Guardian header described it. Starring Marty Rea (Danny) and Eileen Walsh (Laura)\, who is well versed for this role following recent performances in the stellar Catastrophe\, these are the last two souls at a house-warming party. Their performances and interplay are excruciatingly entertaining. \n“I wish I’d met you online. Everything would be so much easier\,” says Danny\, at one stage\, summarising the tragic disconnect of our times facilitated by social media. The perspective of the lost and wounded\, fragile\, man is particularly interesting and carried off with aplomb by Rea. After a killer poster for The Children\, it’s a slight shame this one fails to convey how funny and poignant this production truly is. A double whammy of refreshingly contemporary productions for The Gate. Take a bow! \nUntil Saturday April 20

DESCRIPTION:We last caught Zoe in her own terrific Fringe Festival show Everything Thing I Do\, now singer and theatremaker Zoe Ní Riordáin will create a stripped back and intimate performance on the Gate stage\, following the performance of the terrific Beginning. The event is part of the ongoing Late At The Gate event. \nZoe Ní Riordáin  \nZoe is a theatre writer-director and musicianfrom Dublin. Recently\, she founded a new theatre company\, One Two One Two along with collaborator Maud Lee. They make original work for theatre based on deeply felt writing\, expressed in layered theatrical language. Her current projects include; Everything I Do\, which premiered at the Dublin Fringe Festival September 2018 (winner of Best performer award-Zoe Ní Riordáin). \nZoe wrote and directed Recovery\, which premiered at Project Arts Centre in April 2016\, programmed at LIVE COLLISION International Festival in Dublin\, toured to the Centre Culturel Irlandais in December 2017\, and is currently touring in Ireland. \nShe co-wrote and directed The Well Rested Terrorist (Peacock Theatre\, Tiger Dublin Fringe Festival 2014\, nominated for Best Ensemble award).  She is also developing a new Irish language opera\, Éist Liom (Listen to me) with support from the Arts Council and Dublin City Council. \nAs a cellist\, Zoe is a member of contemporaryelectro-pop band Maud in Cahoots. \nShe is an alumni of the Irish Theatre Institute’s SIX IN THE ATTIC resource sharing programme. Zoe was selected as the director on the Rough Magic SEEDS programme 2014-2015. She is an associate artist ofProject Arts Centre Dublin.

DESCRIPTION:So farewell then Lillies Bordello\, a venue we barely frequented. And while pianist Paul Harrington may be at a loss as to what to do with his weekends\, the good news for everyone else is the transformation of this Grafton Street patch. With club nights such as Nialler9’s Spacer (Friday) and Lost & Sound (Saturday) being fronted by Sally Cinnamon\, Kate Brennan-Harding & Claire Beck as well as Turning Pirate’s Una Molloy involved in bookings\, it seems Lost Lane is pitching itself as the more salubrious alternative to Whelan’s\, The Workman’s and The Grand Social. The soundsystem\, by Toby Hatchett (Hang Dai\, The Big Romance)\, should also bring a pristine sound spectacle. \nLaunch party includes Kormac Live AV Show with the Booka Brass Band

DESCRIPTION:A series of new curated art works\, performances\, artefacts and a new publication. Citizen Artist (2016 – 2018) was formed against the backdrop of the decade of commemorations. It invited artists or collectives and local groups to consider the diverse realities of citizenship 100 years later. Located in studio 468 in St Andrew’s Community Centre Rialto\, it invited the production of ideas\, values\, and sharing between the five artists and local collectives and groups. \nFor over two years this included Laragh Pittman’s collaboration with women from the Amal Women’s Group that created The Invisible Museum which highlights the complexity of identity and place between cultures in Ireland; Fiona Reilly’s Department of Time Keepers that documents the reality and precarity of time and work;  Seoidín O’Sullivan’s collaborative art project  Hard/Graft that challenges us to plant trees for free food access and lobby for more green space across Dublin City;  Pat Curran’s paintings that ground us in the community life of public housing across Dublin 8 including Fatima Mansions\, Dolphin House and St Michael’s Estate; and Mark Holburn’s challenge to us all to be ‘Rebels for Art’. \nUntil April 15\, Kilmainham Courthouse. \n
