SUMMARY:Valérie Blass: The Mime\, the Model and the Dupe
DESCRIPTION:The Mime\, the Model and the Dupe is the debut exhibition by this Montreal based artist. “The very essence of a sculpture is that it has to stand on its own\,” says Blass. “You can have an idea but it has to have a base. It has to be raised\, have a way of standing.” This selection of works engage with images\, gestures and forms related to the body. There’s surprise and distortion at every twist and turn. These stand up and stack up.

SUMMARY:The Hunger
DESCRIPTION:A new opera by Donnacha Dennehy (The Last Hotel\, The Second Violinist) featuring Katherine Manley and Iarla Ó Lionáird (The Gloaming) chronicles the tale of Asenath Nicholson who travelled in Ireland and provided relief to starving people during the Great Famine. Her harrowing first-person account Annals of the Famine in Ireland forms the basis of this work with director Tom Creed making his Abbey debut. Traditional songs dovetail with new music\, while video interviews with Noam Chomsky\, Paul Krugman\, and others underscore the political roots of this tragedy that brought a nation to its knees. \nUntil Saturday August 24

SUMMARY:Optimo DJs x Lumo
DESCRIPTION:It all steps up a gear from next month when the District 8 crew finally set up stall in Jam Park bringing some heavy-hitters to the space including their poster boy Kerri Chandler and Ben Klock’s ‘audiovisual concept party’ Photon. In the meantime\, they’ll be hoping to capture some rooftop rays with the veteran Glaswegian duo Optimo. Canadian DJ and producer Ciel and the Lumo boys round off this tasty line-up which rolls back into town and down into the Wigwam basement afterwards\, should you be up for a big one.  \nAfter party in Wigwam from 10pm

SUMMARY:Fett Burger
DESCRIPTION:Off the back of playing Amsterdam’s stellar Dekmantel and Lovefest in Serbia\, the Sex Tags head honcho rolls down Camden Street with his party jams. Peter Mitterer\, better known as DJ Fett Burger\, grew up in Moss\, an hour outside Oslo\, and cites how he and his brother “created a fantasy world about cool stuff” and how “the art of being big in your own mind has definitely been lost these days” in an age of so-called connectivity. He also once dated one of our pop heroes Annie (Anniemal) so expect to see him batting us away as we enquire about her. This is for those who forgot to get their tickets to Another Love Story.

SUMMARY:Bee Kind Garden
DESCRIPTION:Focusing specifically on Irish wild-flowers\, H&G Creations are using their floristry skills to create an art installation solely out of our buzzy-friend’s favourite pollen. \n“Its all about raising awareness and keeping the conversation going. We want to show everyone how easy it is to do their part in helping the honey bee\, through a floating art installation. Our gift to the community and to the honey bee” says Deirdre Young of H&G \nThere will be free-bee gift packages for passers-by; comprised of Irish wild-flower seeds within a burlap sack of soil\, this ready-made flower bomb hopes to encourage the people of Dublin to get involved and bee-kind to the creatures that enable our existence.

SUMMARY:Ask Too Much of Me
DESCRIPTION:Ask Too Much of Me follows young people living together outside the law in the turbulent first half of 2018. They have a lot of questions and few answers\, meaning they live by faith even if they don’t live by god. The National Youth Theatre features  a talented young ensemble cast of sixteen from all over Ireland with cast members from Cork\, Dublin\, Kilkenny\, Limerick\, Longford\, Mayo\, Monaghan\, Wexford and Wicklow. \nArtistic Director Veronica Coburn and playwright Dylan Coburn Gray\, a former National Youth Theatre participant\, have  created a new play around the idea of faith with NYT. \n“When I was in The Seagull\, the National Youth Theatre show 2009\, I felt incredibly lucky. All the same\, now\, I think I didn’t know how lucky I was. Being a member of Dublin Youth Theatre\, auditioning for this big scary Chekhov with a big scary director – in the big scary Abbey\, no less! – starting to write plays myself; it laid the track for my entire adult life. Veronica\, my mother\, was in the 1984 NYT show: Our Town\, the second ever. I think she feels similar. It’s gorgeous to be working together\, mother and son\, writer and director\, with a gorgeous group of young people. It’s a real honour to get to see it all happen again\, through their eyes as well as our own.” – Writer Dylan Coburn Gray \nUntil Saturday August 24

SUMMARY:The School of Love
DESCRIPTION:The fifth School Of Love will offer music and comedy and impart advice. The evening revolves around an interview on the subject of love given by a psychologist\, therapist\, philosopher or a similar specialist whose work and practice revolve around figuring out the issues that many people face when it comes to love. \nPartly inspired by The School of Life\, the evening aims to offer both an insightful talk but also a wholehearted sensory experience\, involving live music\, poetry\, comedy\, and other similar art forms\, which all tackle in their own way the human conundrums that present themselves when it comes to loving another human. Tickets are limited to 30. \nParticipants include: Ailish McCarthy\, Little Oak and Trish Leonard-Curtain

SUMMARY:Love Sensation
DESCRIPTION:The Mother(ship) and mcd roll out a new festival to ensure another large scale splash of Pride before the summer sun sets. This two-day venture is bedecked in retro pop stripes with noughties favs Lily Allen\, Kelis and The Gossip headlining along with Clean Bandit. There’s a George stage bringing the drag fab and a dance section with solid loveens Horse Meat Disco and Honey Dijon. Crowd-pleasing potential\, even if it lacks contemporary edge in its line-up.

SUMMARY:Ronan Dillon - Erratic
DESCRIPTION:Hang Tough continues its run of excellent exhibitions in their fantastic space with a debut solo exhibition by Ronan Dillon. Erratic is the culmination of work inspired by Dillon’s last two years of living in County Sligo. Utilising an outsider’s eyes to capture the wildness of the land through an urban perspective\, flocks of sheep\, hay bales and their rudimentary markings are source material for his explorations. Drawn to the inconspicuous artistry of the rural\, Dillon breathes fresh inventiveness into this body of work. Coinciding with the show will be a pop-up supper club. Roots x Hang Tough comes courtesy of Keith Coleman & Aisling McHugh who are creating a five course ‘West of Ireland’ inspired tasting menu (€75) over three consecutive nights on August 21\, 22 and 23. Wild and wonderful.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Sorolla
DESCRIPTION:Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923) was known as the ‘master of light’ but the Spanish Impressionist is a largely forgotten figure in the art world compared to heavyweights such as Monet\, Van Gogh and Renoir. \nFrom beaches\, gardens and landscapes to social themes and family portraits\, there’s sun-drenched scenes and depictions of Spanish life in this\, the first exhibition of his work here. \nConsider this the artistic equivalent of getting a visual dose of Vitamin D\, some balm for the soul. \nNational Gallery until Sunday November 3 \nPhoto: Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923)\, Sewing the Sail\, 1896. 2019 © Photo Archive – Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia

SUMMARY:We've Only Just Begun
DESCRIPTION:Second out for this three-day festival featuring 26 acts across two stages. Wyvern Lingo\, Pillow Queens\, Roe and Soda Blonde are the headliners but we’ll be marking our curiosity cards by catching the likes of Lydia Ford\, a Brooklyn-based Irish pop artist and Meath duo Elkin (pictured). It also features Fears\, who featured in our music therapy feature in our last edition. We’ve Only Just Begun are also eschewing a foghorn push around the fact that it is an all-female line-up. We can only hope this is the start of a new norm too.

SUMMARY:Deadly Buzz Aldrin
DESCRIPTION:Deadly Buzz Aldrin is an experimental electronica project serving up psychedelic breaks and beats from a home studio in Dublin city. The producer behind the moniker is Colm O’Riordan\, a musician and DJ behind the Sunday evening mellow vibes residency at Anseo on Camden Street in Dublin – also called Soft Landing. Tonight he launches “Episode 1: Bad Move\, Space Cadet!”. \nBefore this first foray into releasing original new music\, Soft Landing has also branched out to become a monthly radio show on Dublin Digital Radio\, building up an archive of more than 25 shows to date. \nAlthough this is his first official release\, Colm O’Riordan has been making music and DJ’ing for many years in both Cork and Dublin doing shows and gigs at many venues and stations such as Sir Henrys and Radio Friendly in Cork in the late 90’s followed later by a weekly show on Power FM in Dublin before taking up the residency at Anseo.

SUMMARY:Oren Ambarchi
DESCRIPTION:The Australian drummer and guitarist Ambarchi marked his 50th birthday and the tenth anniversary of his Black Truffle imprint with a weekend-long residency at London’s Cafe Oto in May and graces the current issue of Wire. A composer\, multi-instrumentalist and musical polymath\, Ambarchi’s output is prolific and collaborations wide-ranging. SUMMARY:Wine 'n' Cheese
DESCRIPTION:Can you brie-lieve it? You’re suddenly middle-aged and middle-class with expendable cash. Well\, stop in your tracks because there are few better marriages to suit you than wine and cheese. And when it comes in festival format\, you can enjoy the company of likeminded folk who are borderline smug. Explore all the voguish wine trends – organic\, orange\, natural and biodynamic – with expert insights from the likes of the acclaimed Green Man Wines. And while we may not be noted for our wine produce\, when it comes to cheese we are well mature in the stakes.  \nThere’s cheesemaking with Tom Burgess (Coolatin Cheese) and making ‘The Perfect Cheese Toastie’ with Kevin Powell (Loose Canon). There will be a daily Cracker Challenge (eat three cream crackers to win a prize!) and Grape Expectations Challenge where competitors have to make as much wine as they can (with their feet!). Add to that Cheesy Singalong Social\, Sing For Your Dinner karaoke\, The Dublin Ukulele Collective\, Trinity Orchestra do Abba\, R’n’Brie special from Holla Back and Easy Singles speed dating.

SUMMARY:Haiku Hands
DESCRIPTION:There’s always room for a debut show in the city by an Australian electro-rave-pop trio\, right? Their biggest hit Not About You heavily echoes The Ting Tings Shut Up and Let Me Go which was released a decade ago. Shudder. Other tracks such as Squat is straight out of a funked-up Notting Hill Carnival float. Spunky beats abound. They are so freshly squeezed\, Haiku Hands merely come armed with a collection of singles tonight.

SUMMARY:189th RHA Annual Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:It’s the 189th annual RHA exhibition\, yes the 189th and the first to take place under the aegis of a female academy president – the artist Abigail O’Brien. \nThe premise is artists can submit up to three works at a cost of €30 each. A selection is made from the 2700 works they received and if your work makes the final 10% or so and is sold\, the RHA will take 35% commission and you will pocket the rest. As an exhibition\, it enables everyone to decide what they may like or dislike with a broad sweep of the current canvas of the Irish art world. \nDoes the world need another painted Coca-Cola bottle even by a distinguished artist such as Neil Shawcross? Hmm! \nSome stand-outs for us include: Jack Hickey’s ‘Age of Innocence’\, Vera Klute’s bust of Eileen Gray\, Gabhann Dunne’s ‘Pink Hare’\, Lars Nyberg’s ‘Winter Road’\, James Hanley’s ‘David and Goliath’\, Charles Harper’s ‘Maidens’\, Maria Simonds-Goodings ‘Salt Fields’\, Ishmael Clayton’s ‘Fuzzy Future’\, Katherine Sankey’s ‘Protist’\, Jeanette Lowe’s ‘Skip Sculpture’\, Eddie Kennedy’s ‘Bathers’ and John Rainey’s ‘Flay 1’  \nRHA until August 10

DESCRIPTION:We don’t know who Paisley Promotions are but we doff our cap to them for bringing Kevin Morby to town for his debut performance. It’s refreshing to know there is faint hope for independent promoters amid the overarching heft of the big two. Morby is touring off the back of the release of Oh My God\, his fifth studio album\, which sees him delving into more spiritual vibes. When asked on Twitter last month if he had a message for anyone who has only just heard his music but is still thinking of coming to see him in London on the occasion of a show\, Morby replied:  \n \nThere might be an additional emoji or two to add to this show as it’s the last date on his European tour.

SUMMARY:Exhibition - To The Moon
DESCRIPTION:On July 20\, 1969\, the lads from Apollo 11 landed on the Moon making “one small step…” Now we all know about Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin but spare a thought for Michael Collins. While the boyos were bouncing about planting the flag\, poor old Collins only got to fly to the moon and stay in orbit. The Evening Press declared Monday July 21 to be ‘Moonday’ on their masthead and Bishop Fulton Sheen delivered a prayer in the Carmelite Church on Whitefriar Street which was carried on the front page. \nYou can see some of the news clippings including a ‘here’s one we made in anticipation’ RTE Guide in the National Print Museum’s acknowledgement of how the moon landing impacted upon us and was received. It is accompanied by an exhibition of second year NCAD illustration students whereby they interpret the theme of the moon into their letterpress prints. \nNational Print Museum until July 21 (at least)

SUMMARY:Pride Parade
DESCRIPTION:We must admit we’ve been somewhat conflicted by Pride of late. The embracing of Queer culture by the mainstream has not been without its pitfalls\, most noticeably the piggybacking of it by brands. The parade spectacle has been somewhat diminished by the proliferation of bland buses passing by telling us tech company A is down with equality and film company B wants to flog a forthcoming release. Having Madonna playing from a soundsystem while people in t-shirts dance on the roof of a bus is not the essence of a good Pride. \nSolution? Brands fund the creation of float spectacles with edge and competition\, brands fund community groups and outreach programmes to bring the message and the fun. In other words\, brands get out of our faces. Here’s hoping the restoration of its route down the O’Connell Street artery marks the beginning of the return of a flamboyant Pride with a meaningful sense of pride\, place and bite. \nAnnouncing artist and activist Will St Leger as its Grand Marshall this year is a very welcome decision adding meaning over celeb rainbow dashing. \nParade route is Parnell Square to Merrion Square

SUMMARY:Vogue Ball
DESCRIPTION:Cork drag troupe ‘Mockie Ah‘ are bringing their Vogue Ball to Dublin for Pride \nLaunched in August 2017 in what was supposed to be a one off Vogue Ball during Cork Pride\, ‘Mockie Ah’ was quickly formed as an answer to the lack of queer alternative spaces in Cork. Two years later and the ever grower glittering drag family hosts a monthly queer cabaret\, a monthly riot of a club night as well as festival appearances\, a family friendly show and most recently  European dates in Edinburgh and  Amsterdam where they featured on primetime Dutch news! \n \nHosted by Candy Warhol with a total of six diverse categories as well as a major finale round\, the haus will crown their first ever Dublin winner! Inspired by the legendary ‘Paris Is Burning’\, the ‘Mockie Ah’ vogue ball is\, like all of their events\, for everyone. Each category is tailor made so that everyone can walk\, live and of course … win. From ‘Butch Queen’ (first time in drag) to Club Kids and the groups favourite ‘Body Positivity’.  \nDJ sets will be coming from Glamo with judges include London’s Crystal Rasmussen\, Miss Kate\, Andrea Horan\, Terri Murphy of Dublin Vintage Factory. Prizes will be coming from Dublin Vintage Factory\, Tropical Topical\, Boojum and Knockan Stockan Festival\, where contestants have the chance to perform alongside the Haus of Mockie Ah. \n \n

SUMMARY:Tame Impala
DESCRIPTION:We’ve been scratching our heads doing the maths on this one. Tame Impala are a mighty fine indie band whose 2015 album Currents deservedly elevated their status. They are on the second row of a relatively weak Glastonbury line-up (along with Liam Gallagher\, Miley Cyrus and George Ezra). The jury is out on the new material we’ve heard so far. But here’s the rub\, tickets for this show are €59.70 which seems somewhat excessive and counter-productive. Let’s say they are looking at a 7000 capacity gig (€417\,900) which is quite a step-up but not beyond the bounds of reason given their popularity. Taking all costs into account that still adds up to a whopper fee for the band (The less I know the better) or an exceptionally greedy agent/promoter (Let it happen).  \nSurely fans going to a show on a Wednesday night by a band who are successful\, though far from legendary\, deserve a better deal in a space this big? \nPhoto credit: Nick Fancher / Stereogum \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpbblMR_jUo

SUMMARY:Kornél Kovács
DESCRIPTION:The second of a series of ‘day-time rooftop parties’ in Jam Park in Swords. The ever inventive Bodytonic take on their biggest undertaking to date with the revamping of this 80\,000 sq ft venue which has a capacity of 2000 and original cost of €38m into a multi-purpose catch-all space covering everything from brunches and markets to screenings. With the sun beating down\, this should prove a fresh draw for scaled up and extended club experiences which the city so badly needs. With the rain lashing\, the appeal – if you don’t live in the vicinity – may be somewhat diminished; the numbers will need to stack up. The Swedish producer Kovács is here off the back of his well-received second full-length album Stockholm Marathon. \nOthers up on the roof include: Cooks but we’re chefs (June 15)\, Project Pablo (July 7)\, Palms Traxs (July 27)\, Optimo (August 24). \n \n

SUMMARY:Typecast - David Booth
DESCRIPTION:Typecast is the first solo show by Dublin based artist David Booth. Booth’s practice deals primarily with painting and drawing\, using both traditional acrylic and oil paint on canvas but often incorporating mixed media on unconventional surfaces. Sympathetic to the human form Booth’s attention is largely monopolised toward portraiture. While engaging with a widely traditional format such as is portraiture\, it is Booth’s stark contrast between hyper-realistic detailed features and graphic illustrative brush strokes which carry his paintings into the contemporary. Rather than an intention to display the expression or likeness of a human subject\, Booth’s subjects are often anonymous; displaying the expression of the artistic gesture. \nOccupied by the ongoing study into representation of identity\, Typecast is the result of this ongoing theme. While working from his own resources\, source imagery is developed in collaboration with contemporary photographers Philip White\, Cayne Kxa and Eric van Kampen. Booth uses the portrait as a starting point that usually distills other multidimensional viewpoints. As the concept and vernacular of identity is reorienting\, Booth recontextualises the term typecast to challenge these developments and how they refer to social\, psychological factors. \n \nDavid Booth completed his BFA at Wexford Campus School of Art. In 2013 he moved to Dublin to begin his full time career as an artist and has since exhibited both nationally and internationally. Booth has featured in The Irish Times\, The Independent and has been awarded the Evans Painting Prize in 2016. His painting ‘Unit’ was selected for the Zurich Portrait Prize 2018/19 at The National Gallery of Ireland. Booth was recently accepted to the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery in London. His work is held in both private and public collections including Order of Public Works (O.P.W) and various private collections in Ireland and Europe. \nRuns until June 29 (artist talk on 26 at 6pm)
