SUMMARY:Caoimhín O Raghallaigh & Thomas Bartlett
DESCRIPTION:O Raghallaigh and Bartlett have combined forces on three Gloaming LPs to date and now strike out on their own with a joint LP. Both come under the title of ‘highly accomplished’ with O Raghallaigh’s fiddle playing on the ten-string hardanger d’amore being a thing of sheer beauty. Bartlett\, meanwhile\, is a pianist who has direct lines to Yoko Ono\, St Vincent\, The National and Sufjan Stevens having worked with them all including producing Stevens’s Carrie and Lowell. This is guaranteed to be truly special.

SUMMARY:Our Planet
DESCRIPTION:Happenings\, in association with the Dublin Climate Action Regional Office (CARO)\, Dublin City Council and Dun-Laoghaire Rathdown County Council\,\, are organising two free outdoor screenings of the Netflix documentary ‘Our Planet’ to highlight the need for urgent action on climate change and to support the upcoming Global Strike for Climate Action. The screenings of the acclaimed David Attenborough documentary will be powered using battery and solar technology. \n‘Our Planet’ – Powered by the Sun will take place on Friday 13th September in Merrion Square and Saturday 14th September in Blackrock Park\, Dublin. The screenings have been organised one week prior to the Global Strike for Climate Action where millions of young people will take to the streets around the world demanding an end to the age of fossil fuels. \nPeter O’Brien\, Director of Happenings is passionate about climate change and insisting on action: \n“The evidence is clear –  surface temperatures are setting new heat records\, the Amazon rainforest is on fire\, there are record breaking ice melts and sea levels are rising at an alarming rate. We are at crisis point and simply must act\, the world needs to unite on this issue or we are fighting our way to extinction. \nWe have no diesel generator for these events\, we want to spread the message that is no need to use fossil fuels to the extent that we do. Scientists have proved that we have over half a decade to halve our emissions in order to avoid the most devastating impacts of climate change on our food supply\, national security\, global health and extreme weather. We must act NOW”. \nDavid Dodd\, Regional Co-ordinator of the Dublin CARO says “The Dublin CARO is delighted to work with Happenings on this public engagement initiative\, by hosting these family friendly\, outdoor screenings\, in two of Dublin’s scenic public parks. Set up as an initiative of the Irish Government\, the CARO works closely with the four Dublin local authorities on developing and implementing climate actions at local level\, including active engagement with the citizens of Dublin on addressing climate change\, in both mitigation and adaptation areas.’ ” \nOur Planet – Powered by the Sun free events will open at 7:30pm with screenings from 8:15pm. Refreshments will be available and these are leave no trace events. Further details are available on www.happenings.ie \nAbout ‘Our Planet’ \nOur Planet is the most important documentary of the year. An eight part documentary series\, it focuses on the breadth of the diversity of habitats around the world\, from the remote Arctic wilderness and mysterious deep oceans to the vast landscapes of Africa and diverse jungles of South America. \nThis series\, narrated by David Attenborough\, addresses issues of conservation while featuring these disparate animals in their respective home regions\, and has been noted for its greater focus on humans’ impact on the environment than traditional nature documentaries; centering around how climate change impacts all living creatures.

SUMMARY:Mandy O’Neill - Quiet at the Back
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on themes of youth\, adolescence\, community\, environment and institutions\, Mandy O’Neill has been engaging in the dynamics of school life for over a decade. Prompted by an interest in the transitional states of childhood and adolescence\, over time\, complex questions have surfaced about how important and powerful ideas about having aspirations and access to opportunities can affect children and young people’s expectations. Quiet at the Back draws together previous work Aspiration [2005-2007] Promise [2012-2015]\, Champions Avenue [2017-2019] along with her latest output The Whole Room Went White [2019]. \nUntil Sunday October 27

SUMMARY:Our Celestial Sphere
DESCRIPTION:Capitalist Realism is a term coined by the late theorist Mark Fisher\, as well as the title of his book on the subject\, Capitalist Realism: Is There No Alternative?\, focusing on the bleak thought of “the widespread sense that not only is capitalism the only viable political and economic system\, but also that it is now impossible even to imagine a coherent alternative to it”. Kerry Guinan’s exhibition at Pallas Projects\, Our Celestial Sphere\, uses the developed methodology of relational socialist realism to try and work a way past that point\, engaging workers and ideas\, critiquing modern capitalism and trying to find a strategy for the future.  It’s on display until Sep 28\, with a panel discussion with Guinan\, artist Ann Ryan and Dr. Kieran Cashell on September 26 at 6pm. \nPhoto:Image: Artists\, detail\, 3 blank 70x70cm canvases signed by the factory workers that made them\nin Daler-Rowney\, Free Industrial Zone\, the Dominican Republic

SUMMARY:Perfection
DESCRIPTION:Some of us strive for it\, some of us even attain it\, but perfection is often a fleeting\, illusive and damaging ideal. Emerging from its sister gallery off-shoot in Melbourne\, Perfection investigates the concept through a typically eclectic variety of informative strands covering philosophy\, ethnicity\, genetics\, cognitive science\, artificial intelligence and consumer psychology. \nThere’s Graham (Patricia Piccinini)\, a neckless creation to show what we would look like if we were to withstand a low speed crash. Meet Orlan\, the French artist known for the radical act of changing her appearance with plastic surgery in the name of art. \nSimilar to the self-portraits of Cindy Sherman\, Orlan uses her face and body as malleable tools for shifting identities. Symbiotic Ones (Jane Sverdrupsen) explores the notion that many couples look similar to one while Morphoteque #15 (Driessens and Verstappen) reflects the human urge for standardisation within food.  \nUntil Sunday October 6

O’Driscoll is a Cork-based printmaker and visual artist whose silkscreen prints are ubiquitous of late\, forming part of the OPW and National Gallery collection. Employing vibrant colour blocks with curvilinear shapes balanced by white space\, O’Driscoll’s balances contemporary resonances with nostalgic nods across his work. Hickey’s analogue photographic techniques bring a sense of found footage to his work. He utilises a photographic glass plate process\, which requires the photographic material to be coated\, sensitized using silver salts\, exposed and developed within a 15-minute time span. Images of moons\, astronauts and skies form the backbone of his work for Full Turn. \nuntil Thursday October 3

SUMMARY:Grace
DESCRIPTION:Grace are providing a badly needed sweaty shake-up of Queer club culture in the capital. Firstly\, in deference to great club experiences as evidenced in cities such as Berlin\, you leave your selfies and social media updates at the door. A sticker is placed over your camera enabling to live in the moment rather than just record and project it. Returning to Arran Quay after a triumphant Pride sesh in the Sound House\, Grace is hewn to the safe and tolerant spaces where prejudices and spectators are kept out in the cold. All previous editions have sold out well in advance so don’t gamble if you’re game. \nLocal vinyl enthusiast Eavan brings her selection of acid\, rave and techno selections. Grace promises a very special international guest which they will not reveal until the night of the event.

SUMMARY:Valérie Blass: The Mime\, the Model and the Dupe
DESCRIPTION:The Mime\, the Model and the Dupe is the debut exhibition by this Montreal based artist. “The very essence of a sculpture is that it has to stand on its own\,” says Blass. “You can have an idea but it has to have a base. It has to be raised\, have a way of standing.” This selection of works engage with images\, gestures and forms related to the body. There’s surprise and distortion at every twist and turn. These stand up and stack up.

DESCRIPTION:A new opera by Donnacha Dennehy (The Last Hotel\, The Second Violinist) featuring Katherine Manley and Iarla Ó Lionáird (The Gloaming) chronicles the tale of Asenath Nicholson who travelled in Ireland and provided relief to starving people during the Great Famine. Her harrowing first-person account Annals of the Famine in Ireland forms the basis of this work with director Tom Creed making his Abbey debut. Traditional songs dovetail with new music\, while video interviews with Noam Chomsky\, Paul Krugman\, and others underscore the political roots of this tragedy that brought a nation to its knees. \nUntil Saturday August 24

SUMMARY:Fett Burger
DESCRIPTION:Off the back of playing Amsterdam’s stellar Dekmantel and Lovefest in Serbia\, the Sex Tags head honcho rolls down Camden Street with his party jams. Peter Mitterer\, better known as DJ Fett Burger\, grew up in Moss\, an hour outside Oslo\, and cites how he and his brother “created a fantasy world about cool stuff” and how “the art of being big in your own mind has definitely been lost these days” in an age of so-called connectivity. He also once dated one of our pop heroes Annie (Anniemal) so expect to see him batting us away as we enquire about her. This is for those who forgot to get their tickets to Another Love Story.

SUMMARY:Bee Kind Garden
DESCRIPTION:Focusing specifically on Irish wild-flowers\, H&G Creations are using their floristry skills to create an art installation solely out of our buzzy-friend’s favourite pollen. \n“Its all about raising awareness and keeping the conversation going. We want to show everyone how easy it is to do their part in helping the honey bee\, through a floating art installation. Our gift to the community and to the honey bee” says Deirdre Young of H&G \nThere will be free-bee gift packages for passers-by; comprised of Irish wild-flower seeds within a burlap sack of soil\, this ready-made flower bomb hopes to encourage the people of Dublin to get involved and bee-kind to the creatures that enable our existence.

SUMMARY:Ask Too Much of Me
DESCRIPTION:Ask Too Much of Me follows young people living together outside the law in the turbulent first half of 2018. They have a lot of questions and few answers\, meaning they live by faith even if they don’t live by god. The National Youth Theatre features  a talented young ensemble cast of sixteen from all over Ireland with cast members from Cork\, Dublin\, Kilkenny\, Limerick\, Longford\, Mayo\, Monaghan\, Wexford and Wicklow. \nArtistic Director Veronica Coburn and playwright Dylan Coburn Gray\, a former National Youth Theatre participant\, have  created a new play around the idea of faith with NYT. \n“When I was in The Seagull\, the National Youth Theatre show 2009\, I felt incredibly lucky. All the same\, now\, I think I didn’t know how lucky I was. Being a member of Dublin Youth Theatre\, auditioning for this big scary Chekhov with a big scary director – in the big scary Abbey\, no less! – starting to write plays myself; it laid the track for my entire adult life. Veronica\, my mother\, was in the 1984 NYT show: Our Town\, the second ever. I think she feels similar. It’s gorgeous to be working together\, mother and son\, writer and director\, with a gorgeous group of young people. It’s a real honour to get to see it all happen again\, through their eyes as well as our own.” – Writer Dylan Coburn Gray \nUntil Saturday August 24

SUMMARY:Ronan Dillon - Erratic
DESCRIPTION:Hang Tough continues its run of excellent exhibitions in their fantastic space with a debut solo exhibition by Ronan Dillon. Erratic is the culmination of work inspired by Dillon’s last two years of living in County Sligo. Utilising an outsider’s eyes to capture the wildness of the land through an urban perspective\, flocks of sheep\, hay bales and their rudimentary markings are source material for his explorations. Drawn to the inconspicuous artistry of the rural\, Dillon breathes fresh inventiveness into this body of work. Coinciding with the show will be a pop-up supper club. Roots x Hang Tough comes courtesy of Keith Coleman & Aisling McHugh who are creating a five course ‘West of Ireland’ inspired tasting menu (€75) over three consecutive nights on August 21\, 22 and 23. Wild and wonderful.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Sorolla
DESCRIPTION:Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923) was known as the ‘master of light’ but the Spanish Impressionist is a largely forgotten figure in the art world compared to heavyweights such as Monet\, Van Gogh and Renoir. \nFrom beaches\, gardens and landscapes to social themes and family portraits\, there’s sun-drenched scenes and depictions of Spanish life in this\, the first exhibition of his work here. \nConsider this the artistic equivalent of getting a visual dose of Vitamin D\, some balm for the soul. \nNational Gallery until Sunday November 3 \nPhoto: Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923)\, Sewing the Sail\, 1896. 2019 © Photo Archive – Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia
