SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Blue Hawaii
DESCRIPTION:No\, it’s not an Elvis hologram night\, at his most fluorescent aqua\, but rather a Canadian electronic pop duo whose latest release Open Reduction Internal Fixation spans “trance\, acoustic\, UK garage\, trip-hop and house”. Born out of a romantic relationship\, Raphaelle “Ra” Standell-Preston and Alex “Agor” Kerby now collaborate as friends from their respective bases in Montreal and Berlin. Their sound reflects the high frequency cities they both reside in. Their Dublin date will amp up the giddy countdown to C-Day!\n\nWhelan’s\, Saturday December 14\, €10 \nPhoto: Ariana Molly

SUMMARY:Event: Christmas at the National Library of Ireland
DESCRIPTION:Step away from the commercial hubbub outside and take time to breathe and reflect. Christmas should be about carols and calm as much as till-ringing and clamouring. On November 30\, tales of Christmas traditions and stories from the Library’s collections\, with particular reference to WB Yeats and Lady Gregory will be performed by Candelit Tales. On December 7\, there’s a performance of Patrick Kavanagh’s ‘A Christmas Childhood’\, including a selection of Christmas songs by the award-winning Caintairí Avondale Choir\, who have a special focus on a-cappella\, oratorio and early music. The following Saturday the Rosemount Singers\, who will serenade us with a selection of festive Christmas carols.\nNational Library of Ireland (Kildare Street)\, Saturday November 30\, December 7 & 14\, 2pm \nImage: Cuala Press card with an image by Elizabeth Corbet Yeats

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Clairo
DESCRIPTION:Clairo’s musical journey is one deeply embedded in the ultra-new musical climate. She rose to prominence after her song Pretty Girl\, recorded on a laptop in her bedroom\, surged through Instragram and TikTok\, and eventually looped back around through being a monster hit on YouTube. But that’s timeless about her work is the quality – debut album Immunity came out this year\, and its subtle\, mature dream-pop showcases a song-writing talent that’s grown remarkably over the last few years. This gig is a sign of her growing popularity\, as she does two dates at The Academy. \n \nClairo\, The Academy\, Dec 9\, 10 \nPhoto: Savanna Ruedy

SUMMARY:Theatre Highlight: A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings
DESCRIPTION:Adapted from Gabriel García Márquez’s short story which was subtitled ‘A Tale for Children’\, Collapsing Horse bring its magical realism back to the stage after an acclaimed debut at the Fringe Festival. It takes the tropes and accoutrements of the traditional world of fables and fairy-tales without ever resting upon the laurels of this domain. Narrated by Genevieve Hulme Beaman and her silent partner Manus Halligan\, A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings translates across all ages with seamless transitions between puppets and props and a charming design by Andrew Clancy who we featured in the magazine last month.\nPeacock Theatre\, Tuesday December 10 to Saturday December 28\, €16-€18\, 11.30am\, 2.30pm\, 4pm\, 7pm. SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Niall Sweeney - I am the Cosmos
DESCRIPTION:Kickstarter in the can with 594 backers pledging €47\,634 towards their new space in Blackpitts. And the flag is foisted over their new home on this opening weekender\, with requisite splendour\, by Niall Sweeney. I am the Cosmos in their new gallery explores dark matter\, space deities and the electromagnetic push-and-pull of the forces that bind us. Featuring a series of eight prints and two silk scarves\, Sweeney says “Silk scarves are sensual\, beautiful things\, but even in conservative circles they can be the one canvas where anything goes\, where play and subversion can roam – they are very egalitarian in this respect. The prints have been inspired by the designs for the scarves\, depicting each of the deities in their natural habitat – the dark – but they also explore the event horizons of desire. There’s more than a hint of Egyptian gods and Japanese Shinto\, of animism and the inherent spirit in all objects\, and\, of course\, the cosmological universal field!”. \nHen’s Teeth\, The Tannery\, Blackpitts; Thursday November 7 until Wednesday December 11. \nPhoto: Dark Matter by Niall Sweeney [silk scarf]

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Gruff Rhys
DESCRIPTION:Gruffudd Maredudd Bowen Rhys is the Cool Cymru counterpart to Damon Albarn\, never content with resting on his considerable past successes. Of course\, it’s no surprise that Gruff popped up for a stellar turn on Johannesburg from Albarn’s Africa Express project this summer. Pang! is his latest release mostly sung in Welsh and hailed by the Guardian as “a chamber folk-rock minor masterpiece”. It’s global in its outlook through\, produced by the South African electronica artist Muzi with some lyrics sung in Zulu. It’s unlikely to be a converter but for those who religiously congregate in the chapel of Rhys\, the sermon is as ecstatically pleasing as always.\nWhelan’s\, Tuesday December 9\, €25 \nPhoto: Gruff Rhys Press

DESCRIPTION:Ranganathan rivals Richard Ayoade for ubiquity across UK media channels these days. \nHe’s got his podcast Hip Hop Saved My Life\, broadcast his BBC comedy show The Ranganation this summer and has various other deals in recent years ranging from panel show host\, travel shows and playing Judge Romesh in a spin on the well-trodden courtroom format. \nSo\, he’s squeezing in the The Cynic’s Mixtape tour among all these demands. SUMMARY:Club Highlight: Mother
DESCRIPTION:Hoisting their ever-swirling disco ball to their new home in Lost Lane\, Mother embarks on a new era 3.0 after a chequered time in The Hub. After its charmingly ramshackle origins in Copper Alley which brought a sweaty squeeze to the dancefloor\, it lost some of the magic in the more clinical surrounds of The Hub with its redundant spaces and crowd evaporation with on street smoking. Lost Lane promises to cosy it up again\, bring a warmth to the beat and a Hatchett soundsystem to amplify it. A full stage set-up also allows it weave a live element into the night Daithí assuming those duties on December 7.\nLost Lane\, every Saturday night\, €10 \nPhoto: Press

SUMMARY:Theatre Highlight: Overfired
DESCRIPTION:Queer cabaret incorporating drag\, stand-up and song\, Overfired bills itself as ‘a show about queer Irish radicals.’ It won the Outburst Queer Fringe Award in 2018 and returns as a bauble of seasonal fabulousness. Stefan Fae and Lady K bring their song cycle featuring covers of contemporary classics from Sinéad O’Connor to Eiffel 65\, and culminates in an original song written under the mentorship of Peaches during the 2018 MAKE residency. Empowered rather than overpowered\, their credo this Christmas is: “joy is an act of resistance and resistance is fertile!” Check out the state-of-yer-nation in their company.\nProject Arts Centre until Saturday December 7\, 9.15pm\, €12-€16

SUMMARY:Black Church Print Draw
DESCRIPTION:Black Church Print Studio have come up with a novel way of recruiting people to their ‘Collector’ programme with their print draw. The concept is pretty simple – become a member of their ‘Collector’ programme for €150\, and you’ll be allocated a ticket to the print draw. On the night of the draw\, you get to see the prints\, and the ticket numbers are drawn at random – as soon as your ticket is drawn\, you can select the print you want from the ones remaining. With 65 prints in the draw and only 55 tickets sold\, everyone is guaranteed a print\, some valued at more than the ticket price. The team behind it opened their inboxes to submissions on that theme from the public\, and collected them all together to make a theatre piece about it. SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Björk
DESCRIPTION:One thing you can always be assured of is a Björk show won’t be found scrimping on spectacle or boundary-pushing technology. Her first indoor appearance in the capital in 22 years is part of her co-Cornucopia tour which promises phantasmagoric digital theatre built around Utopia\, her most recent release. With Arca as music co-producer\, stage direction by Lucrecia Martel\, digital visuals by Tobias Gemmier and headpieces by co-creative director James Merry (see Hemlines)\, this promises to be an exquisite sensory feast by one of the most idiosyncratic artists of our time. Just don’t come looking for the ‘hits’ from Björk – but in true form\, you’ll actually find them\, courtesy of Hamrahlid\, the 50-piece on-stage youth choir who are also the support act. \n \n3 Arena\, Thursday November 28\, €49.50 \nPhoto: Santiago Felipe/Getty Images

SUMMARY:Some People Theatre Company and Smock Alley Theatre Present Hollow and Dead-Eyed Beasts
DESCRIPTION:Three reclusive former child stars are forced to sell their lavish South Dublin home when they finally run out of money after years of living to excess. \nHaving gathered to mourn their manager’s death\, things begin to get weird. \nLong held secrets come unravelled\, a popular dance craze takes on new importance\, lifelong friendships are tested and a dead dog oversees it all. \nAre these overgrown children ready to leave behind their fantasy world for a life more ordinary? \nWritten and directed by Pea Dinneen\, Hollow and Dead-Eyed Beasts is a sort-of-kind-of-comedy; a bit about friendship\, not quite regarding fame\, almost concerning childhood with one hand vaguely in the area of death whilst also enjoying a passing reference to a popular 90s dance craze with the faintest nod to ritual and only slightly on the subject of the housing market (though having nowhere near enough of a perspective to qualify as satire). And this is all to say nothing of the really rather dead dog. \n \nBrought to you by Some People Theatre Company\, the team behind the sell-out 2018 Dublin Fringe Festival show White “Pick of the Fringe” – The Sunday Times\, “Simultaneously cutting and laugh out loud funny” – MEG.ie\, “At times exceptional\, vividly satirical” – The Reviews Hub \nRunning Time : 50 mins \n  \nBoys’ School\, Smock Alley Theatre \nSun 10 – Sat 16 Nov 2019\,  8pm | plus 3pm on Sat \n  \nWRITTEN & DIRECTED BY: Pea Dinneen (White\, Resident Hot Desker\, Dublin Fringe Festival) \nCAST: Kevin Cleary\, Niamh McGowan\, James O’Neill \nPRODUCED BY: Caoimhe McGowan \nLIGHTING DESIGNER : Riain Condon \nSTAGE MANAGER : Kate Canavan \nGRAPHIC DESIGNER : Kate Brady

SUMMARY:Performance Highlight: Public Feeling
DESCRIPTION:Public feeling explores the health impacts of austerity on the individual and collective body\, the politics of ‘resilience’\, and considers the gym or leisure centre as a space where the bodies of citizens are trained\, transformed and cared for. It’s a timely interrogation of the modern-day mecca and replacement of the shopping centre as a cherished hang-out for the insta-gen. This series of participatory performances is staged in the format of fitness classes. Each class will be delivered by a performer who is a working fitness instructor\, Peter May (Cycle Studio); Gareth Francis (Kickstart Fitness); and Eleanor Young (Aquafit instructor)\, they will instruct the participants throughout the class which are accompanied by a musical score and scripted soundtrack. Newly commissioned writing by Lynn Ruane and Colm Keegan is incorporated into the sound design throughout the performances. “The gym is often thought of as a space outside of politics\, but in fact I think it can be a concentration of it: which bodies are worked and cared for\, and by whom?” says artist Sarah Browne who has created this piece.\nTallaght Leisure Centre\, November 10\, 2pm (Circuit)\, 4.30pm (Aquafit); Clondalkin Leisure Centre\, November 17 & 24\, 2pm (Circuit)\, 4.30pm (Aquafit) \nPhoto: Public Feeling Press

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Skipper’s Alley
DESCRIPTION:Skipper’s Alley is a five-piece band born out of the ever-burgeoning Dublin folk music scene\, combining traditional Irish music with contemporary sensibilities to create music that is wild\, gritty\, ancient and still brand new. The Oul Fip is their second album delving into our rich history with re-interpretations of tunes by the likes of Séamus Ennis (The Farmer’s Curst Wife) and Frankie Harte (Madam\, I’m a Darling) whilst unearthing less-known contributors to the trad tapestry John Griffin (Why She Couldn’t Drink Her Tea). There’ll be banjos\, guitars\, tin whistles\, fiddles\, flutes and uileann pipes. This is a double-header with the tremendous four-part-harmony trad gals\, Landless.
