SUMMARY:Oxide Ghosts: The Brass Eye Tapes
DESCRIPTION:Brass Eye still stands out as one of the most acerbically biting and caustically accurate slices of satire ever served on TV. Chris Morris skewed the celebrities with relish as they spouted ill-thought societal concerns. Phil Collins talked ‘Nonce Sense’ in Paedogeddon! Director Michael Cummings presents this 60-minute film\, a favourite episode vote + Q&A.

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: 070 Shake
DESCRIPTION:In terms of acclaim from her peers\, 070 Shake’s credentials are impeccable – she’s been the musical guest of choice for artists including Kanye West. But she’s far more than a sidekick to famous friends – over the past couple of years she’s been breaking out and building out her own audience\, and her powerful electro-pop spiked with influences from rap\, hip-hop and more makes her one of the most compelling new artists around. A debut album\, Modus Vivendi\, is on the way (officially it’s “coming soon”)\, and you can catch her live at The Button Factory. \n \n070 Shake\, The Button Factory\, Jan 19 \nPhoto: Press

SUMMARY:Shane Griffin: Chromatic
DESCRIPTION:As light passes through defective glass\, beams split into colour spectra\, causing “diffraction grating.” This visual phenomenon is captured in a series of beautiful chromatic abstractions by the Irish\, NYC-based\, visual artist and director Shane Griffin. It’s easy to see why he has also licensed his artwork to Apple for their iPhone backgrounds. Besides this\, Griffin has directed title sequences for Unbanned: The Legend Of AJ1 (Air Jordan’s if your street cred is flagging)\, worked for Nike on creating ‘environment and textual elements’ in support of Kanye West’s Yeezy II (The Red Octobers) as well as creating typography for Travis Scott’s ‘Rap Calendar’. He was also made global creative director of Los York Studios in 2018. Chromatic\, his first solo exhibition here\, is a collection of highly covetable large scale prints. (See Griffin’s talk at Offset 2018 here) \nRuns until Friday January 17 (gallery closed December 21 – January 5) \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Bowie Festival: Face to Face with the Men Who Sold the World
DESCRIPTION:Following their Olympia performance as Holy Holy on the night before where they will perform The Man Who Sold The World and Ziggy Stardust albums in their entirety followed by a set of Bowie rock n roll classics from the 70’s\, Visconti and Woodmansey will settle back for a chat on the closing day of the festival. Visconti is the producer most associated with Bowie working on so many of his seminal albums including his Berlin Trilogy right up to his last one Blackstar. Woodmansey is a drummer best known for his work in the early 1970s as a member of David Bowie‘s core backing ensemble that became known as the Spiders from Mars in conjunction with the release of Bowie’s 1972 LP The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. He is the last surviving member of the Ziggy Stardust studio band. \nRoyal College of Surgeons\, Sunday January 12\, 3pm\, €22

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Pete Smyth - Local
DESCRIPTION:This retrospective exhibition features work from Pete Smyth’s extensive photography project documenting aspects of life in West Tallaght where he lives. Local brings together Smyth’s renowned portrait series ‘Traveller’ and ‘View from the Dearth’\, alongside his most recent work charting street and nightlife in and around Tallaght\, “the routines\, dramas and celebrations\, the lending and returning…” as Ken Grant says in the foreword to this collection. Informed by his role as a community arts worker and social activist\, Smyth lays bare “a place he helps shape and one that’s probably shaped him in the process.” \nGallery of Photography until January 12 \nPhoto: Street Pony Riders by Pete Smyth

SUMMARY:Bowie Festival: Illustrated Bowie / Bowie in Dublin
DESCRIPTION:L.A. based screenwriter Todd Alcott has a side project – turning famous song titles into alternative covers for vintage pulp fiction covers. These “cultural mashups”\, made using digital-altering software\, as a conversation between the songwriter\, the original designer\, himself and the viewer. “All four bring a wealth of associations\,” he says. \n“Bowie dressed as an androgynous alien\, went out onstage and told his audience ‘You’re not alone\, give me your hands\,’ I can’t think of a more encompassing gesture to a misfit\,” says Alcott. \n“No matter how weird you were in your community\, you would always find someone like you at a Bowie concert. During a time of my life when I felt incredibly isolated and alone\, Bowie was one of the key artists who made me feel like I was part of a bigger world\, an artistic continuum.” \nAlcott will be joined by graphic artist Cartoon Bowie in one room with a very special rolling AV presentation of photos and live concert footage of Tin Machine in Dublin’s Baggot Inn from 1991 in Room 2. \nThe Space Between\, Friday January 10 to Sunday January 12\, Free

SUMMARY:Bowie Festival: Glasshouse: The Berlin Trilogy Re-Imagined
DESCRIPTION:The Berlin Trilogy consists of three consecutively released studio albums: Low (1977)\, Heroes (1977) and Lodger (1979). The albums were recorded after Bowie took up residence in West Berlin in late 1976\, and saw him experiment with elements of electronic\, krautrock\, ambient\, and world music in collaboration with American producer Tony Visconti and English musician Brian Eno. He’d moved there after being on the verge of physical and mental collapse owing to cocaine addiction in L.A. \n“For many years Berlin had appealed to me as a sort of sanctuary-like situation. It was one of the few cities where I could move around in virtual anonymity. I was going broke; it was cheap to live. For some reason\, Berliners just didn’t care. Well\, not about an English rock singer\, anyway\,” says Bowie who moved there with his pal Iggy Pop. In was in the Hansa Sound Studio where he recorded “Heroes”\, one of his most adored singles. \nThe Glasshouse Ensemble have carved a distinctive niche for themselves as one of the most vibrant interpreters of a modern cannon of music stretching from Aphex Twin to Sufjan Stevens. Bowie is in capable hands. \nThe Sugar Club\, Thursday January 9\, 8pm\, €20

SUMMARY:Bowie Festival: Culture Vultures
DESCRIPTION:“It’s true – I am a bisexual. But I can’t deny that I’ve used that fact very well. I suppose it’s the best thing that ever happened to me. Fun\, too.” Bowie was always a trail-blazer in so many respects\, not least sexual fluidity. He appeared in a dress on the cover of The Man Who Sold the World and his legendary 1970s Top of the Pops appearances. “same old thing /in brand new drag”\, sang Bowie on Teenage Wildlife\, in 1980. \nHis legacy filtered down through eras and subcultures\, androgyny never looked so good. Remember R.E.M. only released Crush with Eyeliner in 1994. He sparked the flame… panellists Roe McDermott\, Dr Alex Sharpe and Darryl W. Bullock will debate and discuss Bowie’s influence on sexual fluidity while Corkonian piano led powerhouse Jack O’Rourke provides the musical backdrop. \nThe Workman’s Club\, Thursday January 9\, 7.30pm\, €12

SUMMARY:Bowie Festival: David Bowie Made Me Gay: 100 Years of LGBT Music
DESCRIPTION:Bowie released his first record in 1964\, the year Darryl W. Bullock was born. “There was always Bowie. Every time you turned around\, when there was nothing to listen to\, there was always a new Bowie album. I hadn’t realised it until he died\, but he was the soundtrack to my life\,” says Bullock\, music aficionado and author of David Bowie Made Me Gay: 100 Years of LGBT Music. \n \n“As an artist\, he was always playing with gender fluidity and identity. What he did so subversively\, was push it a little bit further for the audience. He brought it into people’s homes\,” says Bullock. He’ll be in conversation with our own iconic Tonie Walsh. \nThe Five Lamps Brewery\, Camden Street\, Wednesday January 8\, 6pm\, €5

DESCRIPTION:Deck the halls guys! This is the cracker you’ve been waiting for. As Heard on Radio Soulwax Pt. 2 was first released by the Dewaele brothers back in 2003 and they ain’t looked back touring\, remixing and causing dancefloor damage which would even cause Prince Andrew to break out in a sweat. Newbies The 2 Bears date back to 2009 and comprise of Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard and Raf Rundell. Their last release The Night is Young was back in 2014 so here’s hoping there’s new works in the offing. One tip our friends at D8 could look into is getting the party started a little earlier too so people can make a proper night of it if they travel out\, 9 to 3 has a nicer chime to it.\nDistrict 8 @ Jam Park\, Friday December 20\, (11pm-3am)\, €20-€30 \nPhoto: 2ManyDJs press

SUMMARY:The 10th Annual City of Dublin Winter Solstice Celebration Festival
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the Winter Solstice\, Legends of the Great Birth and the Environment\, the 10th annual City of Dublin Winter Solstice Celebration Festival\, is a magical indoor festival and outdoor ceremony marking the shortest day of the year which is celebrated worldwide across a range of cultures. \nThe celebration of the winter solstice has its roots in many cultures worldwide\, particularly the Celtic traditions\, where druids – wise women and men – would cut the mistletoe that grew on the oak tree and offer it as a blessing each year. According to an old Celtic myth\, on the solstices of each year the Oak Queen\, representing the light\, and the Holly Queen\, representing the dark\, would fight\, with the Oak Queen emerging victorious at the winter solstice\, enabling the return of the light. \nThis family-friendly and inclusive festival is a colourful gathering of local communities with national and international visitors and people of all ethnicities and cultures. The event marks the turn of the seasons as attendees gather together and celebrate the return of the light\, as the days begin to lengthen once more. \nThis years’ festival themes are Legends of the Great Birth and the environment. The festival features an Irish premiere of an original storytelling performance Legends of the Great Birth featuring theatre and song to animate imaginative and mythological traditions from across Europe. Enjoy a Legend of the Great Birth Theatre workshop exploring our common European mythological heritage\, myths of creation and legends from the Winter Solstice. SUMMARY:Theatre Highlight: A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings
DESCRIPTION:Adapted from Gabriel García Márquez’s short story which was subtitled ‘A Tale for Children’\, Collapsing Horse bring its magical realism back to the stage after an acclaimed debut at the Fringe Festival. It takes the tropes and accoutrements of the traditional world of fables and fairy-tales without ever resting upon the laurels of this domain. Narrated by Genevieve Hulme Beaman and her silent partner Manus Halligan\, A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings translates across all ages with seamless transitions between puppets and props and a charming design by Andrew Clancy who we featured in the magazine last month.\nPeacock Theatre\, Tuesday December 10 to Saturday December 28\, €16-€18\, 11.30am\, 2.30pm\, 4pm\, 7pm. SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Niall Sweeney - I am the Cosmos
DESCRIPTION:Kickstarter in the can with 594 backers pledging €47\,634 towards their new space in Blackpitts. And the flag is foisted over their new home on this opening weekender\, with requisite splendour\, by Niall Sweeney. I am the Cosmos in their new gallery explores dark matter\, space deities and the electromagnetic push-and-pull of the forces that bind us. Featuring a series of eight prints and two silk scarves\, Sweeney says “Silk scarves are sensual\, beautiful things\, but even in conservative circles they can be the one canvas where anything goes\, where play and subversion can roam – they are very egalitarian in this respect. The prints have been inspired by the designs for the scarves\, depicting each of the deities in their natural habitat – the dark – but they also explore the event horizons of desire. There’s more than a hint of Egyptian gods and Japanese Shinto\, of animism and the inherent spirit in all objects\, and\, of course\, the cosmological universal field!”. \nHen’s Teeth\, The Tannery\, Blackpitts; Thursday November 7 until Wednesday December 11. \nPhoto: Dark Matter by Niall Sweeney [silk scarf]

DESCRIPTION:Gruffudd Maredudd Bowen Rhys is the Cool Cymru counterpart to Damon Albarn\, never content with resting on his considerable past successes. Of course\, it’s no surprise that Gruff popped up for a stellar turn on Johannesburg from Albarn’s Africa Express project this summer. Pang! is his latest release mostly sung in Welsh and hailed by the Guardian as “a chamber folk-rock minor masterpiece”. It’s global in its outlook through\, produced by the South African electronica artist Muzi with some lyrics sung in Zulu. It’s unlikely to be a converter but for those who religiously congregate in the chapel of Rhys\, the sermon is as ecstatically pleasing as always.\nWhelan’s\, Tuesday December 9\, €25 \nPhoto: Gruff Rhys Press

SUMMARY:Comedy Highlight: Romesh Ranganathan
DESCRIPTION:Ranganathan rivals Richard Ayoade for ubiquity across UK media channels these days. \nHe’s got his podcast Hip Hop Saved My Life\, broadcast his BBC comedy show The Ranganation this summer and has various other deals in recent years ranging from panel show host\, travel shows and playing Judge Romesh in a spin on the well-trodden courtroom format. \nSo\, he’s squeezing in the The Cynic’s Mixtape tour among all these demands. Ranganathan’s mordant and deadpan style riffs on everything from his lazy eye\, ethnic background and the tribulations of fatherhood.\nOlympia\,  Saturday  December 7\, 7pm\, €30-€33 and Sunday December 8th. \nPhoto: Press
