SUMMARY:Ian Davenport & Peter Monaghan
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1966\, Internationally renowned abstract painter Ian Davenport studied at Goldsmiths College alongside notable peers such as Damien Hirst\, Michael Landy\, Gary Hume\, and Sarah Lucas. He graduated in 1988\, and that same year was included in Hirst’s seminal Freeze exhibition—the first gathering of the loose group that would become known as the Young British Artists. \nIan Davenport\, Summer\, 115x113cm\, print edition of 30\, €9\,350. Works by Davenport and Monaghan will be exhibited together in Gormleys Fine Art\, 27 Frederick St South\, Dublin\, from September 10 to September 30.\nMuch of Davenport’s work is made by pouring or dripping paint down an angled surface\, as in the ‘Days Like These’ exhibition at Tate Britain in 2003\, where Davenport created a mural by dripping lines of coloured paint vertically down a wall using a syringe. Other work features paint poured on a flat surface\, relying on the effects of gravity and weight to move colour into abstract compositions. In 1991\, Davenport was nominated for the Turner Prize & in 2002 his work was exhibited in Irish Museum of Modern Art. \nAward-winning artist Peter Monaghan was born in Ireland in 1955 and studied at the National College of Art and Design in the mid-1970s. “My work is the result of disciplined research into the experience of looking – the experience of pure visual sensation and aesthetic pleasure. Simple forms and colours are used in repetition to engage the viewer. It is a dialogue about light\, colour\, movement and illusion; exploring the relationships and contrasts between painted flat surfaces\, protruding spheres\, cubes or geometric shapes. The work aims to evoke a response from the viewer.” \nPeter Monaghan\, Timecoloured\, 80x110cm\, mixed media\, €7\,000. Works by Monaghan and Davenport will be exhibited together in Gormleys Fine Art\, 27 Frederick St South\, Dublin\, from September 10 to September 30.\nMonaghan’s artwork has won national & international recognition including winning the Jim McNaughton Bursary for Commissioned Artists as part of the Business to Arts Awards. His large-scale installations can be seen in prestigious locations such as the V.I.P. Presidential Suite in Dublin Airport\, the Gibson Hotel\, the Dean Hotel\, the Beacon Clinic and UCD’s scientific centre. Monaghan has also exhibited at the RHA in Dublin and had successful exhibitions in London\, New York\, Miami\, Singapore\, Brussels and Hong Kong. \nBoth artists share a keen interest in the combination of colour and line to create vibrant and dynamic pieces. This piece will guide you on a 55-minute walk along the River Liffey from the Seán Heuston Bridge to the Samuel Beckett Bridge. Hear a new soundscape based on the unique urban environment you pass through\, and learn about the history and stories behind Dublin’s many iconic bridges. \nTo experience the piece go to the starting point at the corner of Parkgate Street and Seán Heuston Bridge. SUMMARY:Bharti Kher - A Consummate Joy
DESCRIPTION:Bharti Kher’s oeuvre spans more than two decades and includes paintings\, sculptures and installations. Throughout her practice she has displayed an unwavering relationship with surrealism\, narrative\, and the nature of things. Inspired by a wide range of sources and making practices\, she employs the readymade in wide arc of meaning and transformation. Kher’s works thus appear to move through time\, using reference as a counterpoint and contradiction as a visual tool. Her chimeras\, mythical monsters\, and allegorical tales combine references that are at once topical and traditional\, political and poetic. \nA Consummate Joy comprises new and recent works\, ranging from sculpture\, painting\, installation and watercolours\, and the latest annual edition of a 30-year project which began in 2010\, Virus XI (2020). Now living in New Delhi\, India\, Kher’s use of found objects is informed by her own position as an artist located between geographic and social surroundings. Kher’s way of working is exploratory; surveying\, looking\, collecting and transforming\, as she repositions the viewer’s relationship with the object and initiates a dialogue between metaphysical and material pursuits. \nBharti Kher on the significance of showing her work in Ireland said “Ireland has always been an interest for me in its similarities to ancient Indian history and mythologies; from the worship of pagan goddesses to the practice of oral storytelling and song”.  \nAt the centre of Kher’s practice are her sculptures\, early examples of which featured fantastical hybrid characters\, blurring the distinctions between humans and nature\, ecology and politics. In line with this early practice\, Kher continues to assemble\, juxtapose and transform found objects that are witness to their own histories. \nuntil January 17\, 2021 \n

DESCRIPTION:A lot of the time they go unnoticed: old sheds\, old walls\, a wet ditch after the summer rain.” – Artist Eugene Conway\n \n“New Landscapes\,” an exhibition of recent works from one of Ireland’s leading realist landscape painters Eugene Conway\, goes on display at Gormleys Fine Art in Dublin from July 4 to 18. \nOriginally from Dublin\, Eugene Conway moved to Kilkenny as a child in the 1960s. Growing up in the countryside\, he developed a great love and appreciation for the beauty of nature and his paintings see the landscape of County Kilkenny brought centre stage. \nConway’s paintings suggest the unfolding of ordinary rural life\, reflecting the layers of history left by habitation and farming. \nEugene Conway\, Stream in Spring\, Oil on Linen\nHis work mostly focuses on farm scenes — old barns nestled amongst the hedgerows beside moss-covered stone walls; while his use of colour relates directly to the weather\, the seasons and the passage of time. His subjects – bridges\, barns and byways – are the unsung heroes of the Irish countryside\, the aspects of the landscape that you notice when you live there. \nThe painter’s work is meticulously observed – the pattern of leaves blown into the side of the road\, the way that clouds are reflected in puddles\, an old gate\, propped beneath a bridge. One image sees the russet ridges of a corrugated barn highlighted against the green of fertilised fields in the moment before rain. In another a farm track\, scored with tractor tyres\, is almost impassable with mud. \nSpeaking about his subject matter\, Conway observes\, “A lot of the time they go unnoticed: old sheds\, old walls\, a wet ditch after the summer rain\, or maybe the way that the light is hitting something\, bringing out a lovely pattern in it.” He adds\, “The light is at a certain point. If you come back an hour later\, everything has changed.” \nEugene Conway\, Green Barn in Snow\, Oil on Linen.\nEugene Conway studied at the National College of Art & Design\, NCAD\, Dublin. Nonetheless\, in the spirit of solidarity\, the band have decided to debut the documentary on March 20th at 7pm on their website and social media channels.\n\nThe film tells the story of Irish brothers Richie & Jamie Martin’s journey up the swiss alps\, instruments on their backs\, to play a concert in a cabin 2\,200 metres above sea level.The journey to the venue (a traditional Swiss mountain cabin dating back to 1895 that sits on the edge of a cliff) saw them hiking for 10 hours\, instruments on their backs. Directed and produced by Elijah Egan\, the film is a wonderful insight into how far artists will go for their art\, something that’s particularly relevant in these trying times.

Chandler is a house music icon who has been a DJ since a time in which it was considered a burgeoning art form. “How you start and how you finish is the most important thing. It’s like a movie: even if it’s a great movie\, if it ends like shit the whole movie feels like it was shit\,” says Chandler. “So I treat it like it’s a living room environment – it’s not just me DJing\, it’s all of us.” \n One can safely assume there will be no filler in the tracks in between. By the way\, the Guinness World Record for DJ set length is held by Nigerian DJ Obi who played for 240 hours in the summer of 2016. He began to suffer hallucinations on the fifth day.

DESCRIPTION:Coinciding with the 25th anniversary of his passing this spring comes an appreciation of The Diceman. Thom McGinty was a much beloved Grafton Street character\, intrinsic to the culture of the city and fondly remember by all those who encountered his mime antics during the ‘80s and ‘90s. He brought the street to a halt as onlookers crowded around for a gawk as he stood there impervious to their attention or undertook his ‘Zen walk’. And\, then\, with a wink or a flinch he tumbled their tension into mirth and awe.  \nThe late Gay Byrne conducted a sympathetic interview\, with McGinty on The Late Late Show in 1988\, in which he dispelled many of the myths and ignorance which existed at the time about the AIDS virus of which he suffered. He died age 42. This is the most fitting of tributes to one of the city’s most cherished.

With the 40\,000 grant\, he’s created The Spider’s House\, a gothic tale set in a warped city space that reflects our own. \nBilled as a nightmare from a disordered mind\, the play follows a romance between Paulsa and Issy\, who are trying to escape the city limits. With this his new work\, Ford asks what relationships are permissible and who should be denied love. The play runs from the 27th of February to March 7th\, at 2:45pm and 7:45pm each day. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:From football pitches to contemporary dance\, 17 women primarily from Ballybough and Sheriff Street will take to the stage in Project Arts Centre. \nFor the last 6 months the women have been trained in a unique and evolving dance practice by choreographer Maria Nilsson Waller and singer/composer Stace Gill/The Sei under their Flora Fauna Project: a multidisciplinary production house rooted in dance and music. \n \nThe women came from two GAA teams brought together by Dublin GAA player Michale Darragh MacAuley who is a supporter of the project in the NEIC.  “Football brought us together\, dancing is keeping us together” says Tracey/Ballybough GAA for Ma’s. \n \n“As a choreographer I am always looking for rawness and bravery in the performers\, and I decided to work with non-professional dancers. These women really bring it! I dream\, prepare and encourage and am careful not to put the filters of my own dance education on to what these dancers create.” Nilsson Waller says about the piece. \n \n“The River” will be the women’s first time on a professional stage and their comfort zones are being challenged to the max.  The last 6 months have been transformative for everyone involved. Sharing what they have learned will be a new level and a rare experience both for performers and audience. \n“Me kids asked me\, ‘Ma\, where ye goin?’ I’m goin’ to be meself for an hour”. – Jackie/Ballybough \nThe music is composed and performed live on stage by THE SEI / Stace Gill. \nStace Gill\, who herself started her dance training only a few years ago says: \n“Finding the flow between body and imagination is a game changer in life. These powerful women on stage completely embody this for the audience to see and feel.’ \n \nTHE RIVER is feminine\, loaded with echoes of traditional Dublin\, the second piece PIDGIN’ represents masculine spirit and multicultural Ireland. \nPidgin\, performed by internationally successful Irish/Nigerian dance artist Mufutau Yusuf\, refers to the simplified or bastardised language which came into existence as a result of contact between two or more languages\, occurring for example in situations like trade\, migration and colonisation. It’s bears all the hallmarks of an excruciatingly taut psychological drama\, one both feared and beloved by the middle-classes.

DESCRIPTION:Robert Wiene’s Das Cabinet des Dr Caligari shook filmgoers worldwide when it premiered in Berlin on February 26th\, 1920. It changed the direction of the art form like no other film has since. Now presented in a definitive restoration\, the film’s chilling\, radically expressionist vision is set to grip viewers again. At a local carnival in a small German town\, hypnotist Dr. Caligari presents the somnambulist Cesare\, who can purportedly predict the future of curious fairgoers. But at night\, the doctor wakes Cesare from his sleep to enact his evil bidding… \nIncalculably influential\, the film’s nightmarishly jagged sets\, sinister atmospheric and psychological emphasis left an immediate impact in its wake (horror\, film noir\, and gothic cinema would all be shaped directly by it). \nThis special centenary screening with feature a new score performed live by Adrian Crowley\, Sean Mac Erlaine\, Matthew Nolan and Barry Adamson (Magazine / Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds) with live processing by Neil O’Connor. \n \n  \n
