SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Temples
DESCRIPTION:Temples bring their electro tinged psychedelic rock to The Button Factory on March 2nd. The Noel Gallagher-approved group are supporting their third album ‘Hot Motion’\, which sees them returning to a more immediate sound after the electroncially orchestrated ‘Volcano.’ With dreamy songs that covertly deliver excellent pop hooks\, Temples are an enticing live proposition.

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: I Am Diana De Brito
DESCRIPTION:I Am Diana De Brito (IAMDDB) is a Mancunian straight out of Gilles Peterson’s record box. The Mancunian rapper and singer brings a jazz-infused swagger to bear on her urban beats. She dropped a new\, three-track EP\, Kare Package just before Christmas and enlisted Toddla T to produce her new single Famous. It’s no surprise that she calls to mind Jill Scott’s soulful vibes and supported Lauryn Hill on her comeback tours. “Ain’t no pressure with the world – they want diamonds\, I want pearls\,” she sings on Sit Back. And who are we to argue. \n  \nAcademy Green Room\, Friday February 28\, €20 (+14s show)

SUMMARY:Comedy Highlight: Histrionix
DESCRIPTION:In this new show as part of Scene+Heard\, history blends with fiction in increasingly absurd ways. At the beginning of the show\, a historian comes on stage to tell a lesser-known true story from history. But once a team of improvisers take to the stage to re-enact this story that they’ve never heard before\, the truth soon becomes an afterthought. Mistakes are made\, amplified and built off one another until this re-telling spirals out of control. Histrionix\, which boasts some of Ireland’s most experienced improvisers\, promises to leave the audience both more and less informed. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Caligari 100
DESCRIPTION:Robert Wiene’s Das Cabinet des Dr Caligari shook filmgoers worldwide when it premiered in Berlin on February 26th\, 1920. It changed the direction of the art form like no other film has since. Now presented in a definitive restoration\, the film’s chilling\, radically expressionist vision is set to grip viewers again. At a local carnival in a small German town\, hypnotist Dr. Caligari presents the somnambulist Cesare\, who can purportedly predict the future of curious fairgoers. But at night\, the doctor wakes Cesare from his sleep to enact his evil bidding… \nIncalculably influential\, the film’s nightmarishly jagged sets\, sinister atmospheric and psychological emphasis left an immediate impact in its wake (horror\, film noir\, and gothic cinema would all be shaped directly by it). \nThis special centenary screening with feature a new score performed live by Adrian Crowley\, Sean Mac Erlaine\, Matthew Nolan and Barry Adamson (Magazine / Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds) with live processing by Neil O’Connor. \n \n  \n

Brazil follows Sam (Jonathan Pryce) a beleagued desk clerk who dreams of escaping his humdrum life. When faulty paperwork leads to the death of the wrong person\, he’s drawn into a conspiracy involving terrorism\, plastic surgery and a renegade air conditioning specialist played by Robert De Niro. \nReleased in 1985\, the film combines dystopian buracracy with Gilliam’s mischevious humour and immaculate design. SUMMARY:Walls Talk
DESCRIPTION:Walls Talk is a new dance piece for solo dancer\, Breandán de Gallaí (former Riverdancce lead)\, and singer\, Gina Boreham\, opening in Project Arts Centre. \nWhen I first heard Gina Boreham sing I marched straight up to her and said “We have got to do a project together!” Gina sings with Dunajska Kapelye (The Danube Band)\, a Gypsy/Balkan folk band\, and specialises in vintage jazz and blues classics. That night she sang Billie Holiday’s Deep Song. \nMy attachment to the music of this era was an intriguing element and definitely a good starting point. I’ve been listening to Billie Holiday\, Chet Baker\, Sarah Vaughan et al since I was a teenager. I am often struck with the sense of not necessarily belonging to my own time – that the mid 20th century might be a better fit for me. With Gina’s singing in mind\, I imagined that the show might be a sort of song cycle. \n \nThe name came to me over pints in O’Brien’s on Leeson Street. ‘Old man’ pubs seem to be blanketed with stories and memories: celebrations; fights; sorrowful times; secret love affairs; not unlike the layer upon layer of paint\, and pre-smoking-ban smoke embedded in the walls. “If these walls could talk” led on to Walls Talk.  As we live our lives we leave traces of ourselves behind – our actions\, feelings and thoughts clinging to the stuff we touch. \nThe original music arrangements were created by Paddy Mulcahy (Limerick)\, Fiachra Ó Corragáin (Kinsale)\, Joe Csibi (Dublin) & Zac Gvi (London). Songs include Seems Like Old Times\, I’m Fool to Want You\, Gloomy Sunday\, Deep Song\, For All We Know and I’ll Be Seeing You\, to name but a few. \nWalls Talk premieres on the week of the 25-29th February\, 7.30 pm in Project Arts Centre\, Dublin – find out more here. \nTickets €18 / 20

SUMMARY:Mamafesta Memorialising
DESCRIPTION:My mum has senile dementia. I made my last piece about her. But it wasn’t enough. I still have more to do and more to say. I’m worried that what’s happening to her will happen to me. So\, this piece is a memory exercise for three male dancers. All pushing to see how much abstract information our bodies can retain. The title comes from a line from the Irish writer James Joyce’s epic novel Finnegan’s Wake. It references a letter (or manifesto) written by Annalivia Plurabelle. Annalivia represents the archetypal female character in this extremely complex masterpiece and\, though she may not be a classic heroine\, she is very definitely all essence. It is this essence or shifting between past present and future that reminds me of the fragility of our own identity. If we are more than the sum of our parts\, what’s left as some of those parts disappear? Who are we when it’s all gone? In this work it’s my own demons I’m dealing with. My need to tell my stories. To not forget or be forgotten. – Philip Connaughton \nRuns from Wednesday March 19 to Saturday March 22

Born of Hungarian Gypsy descent in a small Slovakian town\, Varady started learning guitar at the humble age of 4. Moving to Ireland in 2007\, it wasn’t long before Cork and Limerick natives saw a 9 year old Varady busking on the streets. At the age of 13\, he became the youngest headlining artist at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London\, and since then has played with Martin Taylor\, Tommy Emmanuel and Louis Stewart among others. \nThis week\, The Andreas Varady Trio come to Lost Lane with two albums under their belt and some of the finest jazz to come out of the country in the decade.

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Bombay Bicycle Club
DESCRIPTION:Back in 2009\, Bombay Bicycle Club exploded onto the scene with the kind of energetic yet melancholy indie rock that made all the NME boys and girls hearts soar. In the years since\, they’ve done everything from an acoustic album to more maximalist efforts that take inspiration from Indian and Turkish music. \nNow back with their new album ‘Everything Else Has Gone Wrong’ after a three year hiatus\, Bombay Bicycle Club seem intent on taking back their crown. Lead single ‘Eat\, Sleep\, Wake (Nothing but You)’ is the kind of exceedingly earnest toe tapper that the band made their name with over a decade ago and now due to popular demand\, a second Vicar Street date has been added to their Irish Tour. Get your tickets and feel like an alienated loverlorn teen all over again.

SUMMARY:Medea
DESCRIPTION:Buoyed by the critical acclaim and sell-out run of A Christmas Carol\, The Gate stride into the new year with the first offering from their Power and Freedom season. Euripides Greek tragedy was first produced in 431BC so director Oonagh Murphy has a fair few reference points at her disposal. However\, this staging takes its lead from Kate Mulvany and Anne-Louise Sarks’ radical refresh of the source material in which they frame the tragedy from the perspective of the heroine’s children. Melding contemporary concerns upon mythological moorings whilst paying deference to the ‘out of the mouth of babes’ insights adds up to the prospect of a thrilling piece of theatre. \nUntil Saturday\, February 22 \nPhoto Credit: Simon Burch

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Isobel Campbell
DESCRIPTION:Belle & Sebastian founder member Isobel Campbell returns with her fifth solo album\, There Is No Other. The record will be her first solo effort since 2006’s Milkwhite Sheets\, and first album of any kind since her most recent Mark Lanegan collaboration\, Hawk\, in 2010. It wasn’t meant to be this way with the album recorded five years ago but held in a rights/legal limbo after the closure of her former label. “It felt like I’d retired\,” she says. “Or I was in prison. To be told I could not release the record completely broke me and I started questioning everything\, feeling very reluctant and shying away from everything. But if you’re lucky to live long enough\, there are always going to be peaks and troughs.” Time to welcome her back with open arms and loving ears. \nLiberty Hall\, Saturday February 1\, €22 \nPhoto: Press

SUMMARY:Goodbye Vibrations with Terri Hooley
DESCRIPTION:Ulster’s Godfather of Punk\, Hooley was the founder of the Good Vibrations record shop and label where he unearthed Stiff Little Fingers and The Undertones. Upon playing Teenage Kicks\, the legendary John Peel said\, “isn’t that the most wonderful record you’ve ever heard? In fact\, I’m going to play it again\,” making it the first song ever played twice\, back-to-back on the BBC. Hooley’s had the autobiographical treatment and cinematic immortalisation in a well-received indie feelgood flick. Now\, he’s is on another well-earned lap of honour deciding that 2020 will mark his final one on the decks. “I’d rather go out with a bit of a bang than just fade\,” he says\, and who are we to disagree.  \nMovie screening & Q&A with Stuart Bailie 7.30pm (€15) \nDJ Set 11pm (€10) \nhttps://vimeo.com/72748818

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Dan Deacon
DESCRIPTION:There was a time when Dan Deacon was in our lives almost as much as The National or John Grant. The love affair was mutual and we fondly remember him and his human tunnels in Andrew’s Lane (2009) and splitting up the field on the Friday evening of Body and Soul (2015). But then he kind of disappeared. Or rather he went off and scored some soundtracks for cycling doc Time Trial and Rat Film which explored Baltimore’s complicated history (as told through the city’s rat infestation). Well he’s back with a new album Mystic Familiar (Domino) bringing more kaleidoscopic\, synth-pop joy into our lives. SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: 070 Shake
DESCRIPTION:In terms of acclaim from her peers\, 070 Shake’s credentials are impeccable – she’s been the musical guest of choice for artists including Kanye West. But she’s far more than a sidekick to famous friends – over the past couple of years she’s been breaking out and building out her own audience\, and her powerful electro-pop spiked with influences from rap\, hip-hop and more makes her one of the most compelling new artists around. SUMMARY:Shane Griffin: Chromatic
DESCRIPTION:As light passes through defective glass\, beams split into colour spectra\, causing “diffraction grating.” This visual phenomenon is captured in a series of beautiful chromatic abstractions by the Irish\, NYC-based\, visual artist and director Shane Griffin. It’s easy to see why he has also licensed his artwork to Apple for their iPhone backgrounds. Besides this\, Griffin has directed title sequences for Unbanned: The Legend Of AJ1 (Air Jordan’s if your street cred is flagging)\, worked for Nike on creating ‘environment and textual elements’ in support of Kanye West’s Yeezy II (The Red Octobers) as well as creating typography for Travis Scott’s ‘Rap Calendar’. He was also made global creative director of Los York Studios in 2018. Chromatic\, his first solo exhibition here\, is a collection of highly covetable large scale prints. (See Griffin’s talk at Offset 2018 here) \nRuns until Friday January 17 (gallery closed December 21 – January 5) \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Following their Olympia performance as Holy Holy on the night before where they will perform The Man Who Sold The World and Ziggy Stardust albums in their entirety followed by a set of Bowie rock n roll classics from the 70’s\, Visconti and Woodmansey will settle back for a chat on the closing day of the festival. Visconti is the producer most associated with Bowie working on so many of his seminal albums including his Berlin Trilogy right up to his last one Blackstar. Woodmansey is a drummer best known for his work in the early 1970s as a member of David Bowie‘s core backing ensemble that became known as the Spiders from Mars in conjunction with the release of Bowie’s 1972 LP The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. SUMMARY:Bowie Festival: Illustrated Bowie / Bowie in Dublin
DESCRIPTION:L.A. based screenwriter Todd Alcott has a side project – turning famous song titles into alternative covers for vintage pulp fiction covers. These “cultural mashups”\, made using digital-altering software\, as a conversation between the songwriter\, the original designer\, himself and the viewer. “All four bring a wealth of associations\,” he says. \n“Bowie dressed as an androgynous alien\, went out onstage and told his audience ‘You’re not alone\, give me your hands\,’ I can’t think of a more encompassing gesture to a misfit\,” says Alcott. \n“No matter how weird you were in your community\, you would always find someone like you at a Bowie concert. During a time of my life when I felt incredibly isolated and alone\, Bowie was one of the key artists who made me feel like I was part of a bigger world\, an artistic continuum.” \nAlcott will be joined by graphic artist Cartoon Bowie in one room with a very special rolling AV presentation of photos and live concert footage of Tin Machine in Dublin’s Baggot Inn from 1991 in Room 2. \nThe Space Between\, Friday January 10 to Sunday January 12\, Free

SUMMARY:Bowie Festival: Glasshouse: The Berlin Trilogy Re-Imagined
DESCRIPTION:The Berlin Trilogy consists of three consecutively released studio albums: Low (1977)\, Heroes (1977) and Lodger (1979). The albums were recorded after Bowie took up residence in West Berlin in late 1976\, and saw him experiment with elements of electronic\, krautrock\, ambient\, and world music in collaboration with American producer Tony Visconti and English musician Brian Eno. He’d moved there after being on the verge of physical and mental collapse owing to cocaine addiction in L.A. \n“For many years Berlin had appealed to me as a sort of sanctuary-like situation. It was one of the few cities where I could move around in virtual anonymity. I was going broke; it was cheap to live. For some reason\, Berliners just didn’t care. Well\, not about an English rock singer\, anyway\,” says Bowie who moved there with his pal Iggy Pop. In was in the Hansa Sound Studio where he recorded “Heroes”\, one of his most adored singles. \nThe Glasshouse Ensemble have carved a distinctive niche for themselves as one of the most vibrant interpreters of a modern cannon of music stretching from Aphex Twin to Sufjan Stevens. Bowie is in capable hands. \nThe Sugar Club\, Thursday January 9\, 8pm\, €20

SUMMARY:Bowie Festival: Culture Vultures
DESCRIPTION:“It’s true – I am a bisexual. But I can’t deny that I’ve used that fact very well. I suppose it’s the best thing that ever happened to me. Fun\, too.” Bowie was always a trail-blazer in so many respects\, not least sexual fluidity. He appeared in a dress on the cover of The Man Who Sold the World and his legendary 1970s Top of the Pops appearances. “same old thing /in brand new drag”\, sang Bowie on Teenage Wildlife\, in 1980. \nHis legacy filtered down through eras and subcultures\, androgyny never looked so good. Remember R.E.M. only released Crush with Eyeliner in 1994. He sparked the flame… panellists Roe McDermott\, Dr Alex Sharpe and Darryl W. Bullock will debate and discuss Bowie’s influence on sexual fluidity while Corkonian piano led powerhouse Jack O’Rourke provides the musical backdrop. \nThe Workman’s Club\, Thursday January 9\, 7.30pm\, €12
