SUMMARY:Film Highlight: When the Snow Falls I'll Be Gone
DESCRIPTION:Irish folk duo Cry Monster Cry were just about to premiere their new documentary\, When the Snow Falls I’ll Be Gone\, on March 14th when the Coronavirus started to wreak havoc with cultural events. Nonetheless\, in the spirit of solidarity\, the band have decided to debut the documentary on March 20th at 7pm on their website and social media channels.\n\nThe film tells the story of Irish brothers Richie & Jamie Martin’s journey up the swiss alps\, instruments on their backs\, to play a concert in a cabin 2\,200 metres above sea level. The journey to the venue (a traditional Swiss mountain cabin dating back to 1895 that sits on the edge of a cliff) saw them hiking for 10 hours\, instruments on their backs. Directed and produced by Elijah Egan\, the film is a wonderful insight into how far artists will go for their art\, something that’s particularly relevant in these trying times.

SUMMARY:DJ Highlight: Kerri Chandler 12 Hour Set Paddy's Day
DESCRIPTION:Jam Park finally realises its potential in the presence of a DJ who doesn’t shirk from the ‘value for money’ concept. Chandler is a house music icon who has been a DJ since a time in which it was considered a burgeoning art form. “How you start and how you finish is the most important thing. It’s like a movie: even if it’s a great movie\, if it ends like shit the whole movie feels like it was shit\,” says Chandler. “So I treat it like it’s a living room environment – it’s not just me DJing\, it’s all of us.” \n One can safely assume there will be no filler in the tracks in between. By the way\, the Guinness World Record for DJ set length is held by Nigerian DJ Obi who played for 240 hours in the summer of 2016. He began to suffer hallucinations on the fifth day.

SUMMARY:Walk Highlight: Dublin Decoded
DESCRIPTION:“And on your left you’ll see the Maldron Hotel which dates back to 2018 and on your right you’ll see the new Hyatt Centric whose foundations were finalised in 2019. Did we mention the Aloft or the forthcoming Staycity on the site of the Tivoli or the Premier Inn on Newmarket Square? At least\, that will be something to look forward to in 2022.” \nDublin Decoded has earned a fine rep for its various walking tours in the city and this one blends in the shock of the lopsided new with its rich historical tapestry. Blackpitts\, Tenters\, Weavers\, Newmarket – it’s all changing utterly round these parts but there are some constants too. Encompassing “former breweries and tanneries\, early textiles\, philantrophy. revolution\, controversial planning decisions and iconic social housing\,” here is a chance to enlighten yourself and maybe feel a little enraged also.

SUMMARY:Festival Highlight: St Patrick's Festival
DESCRIPTION:Under the artistic tutelage of Karen Walshe\, St Patrick’s Festival has seriously ramped up its engagement with and appeal to those of us who live here. Under the theme of Seoda – Treasures from Ireland\, it’s delivered an impressive programme across the five days and nights. A few which have taken our fancy include Brendan Balfe in conversation with Dave Fanning (Friday March 13\, 1pm in the Chapel Royal of Dublin Castle\, €8)\, Abair: Treasures Lost and Stolen which pairs traveller singer Thomas McCarthy and storyteller Liz Weir (The Music Room\, Christchurch Cathedral\, Friday March 13\, 6.30pm\, €12) and InnerEar: A Guide to Listening with Dr Leon McCarthy\, Donal Dineen and Sorcha McGrath (Hen’s Teeth\, Sunday March 15\, 12.30pm-6pm\, €15 talk\, €35 talk and 1.30pm brunch). \nYou will find more extensive references to Where We Live (ThisIsPopBaby) and Alternating Current (Dublin Digital Radio) which also form part of the programme elsewhere in the magazine.

SUMMARY:Theatre Highlight: SHIT
DESCRIPTION:Patricia Cornelius’ critically acclaimed play SHIT comes to the Project Arts Centre in a new production from THISISPOPBABY. Transplanting the story from Australia to Dublin\, the production tackles class\, misogyny and poverty. The play follows Billy\, Bob and Sam\, three ‘nasty women’ who ‘spit\, swear\, scream… They’re mean\, foul mouthed\, downtrodden\, and utterly damaged’. \n\nSHIT is a four-time Green Room Award winner\, a heart-breaking and bitterly funny piece that’s widely lauded as one of the best Australian plays in recent years. It’s a rare and unexpected treat to see it in Ireland as part of THISISPOPBABY’s new festival Where We Live 2020. \n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: The Diceman
DESCRIPTION:Coinciding with the 25th anniversary of his passing this spring comes an appreciation of The Diceman. Thom McGinty was a much beloved Grafton Street character\, intrinsic to the culture of the city and fondly remember by all those who encountered his mime antics during the ‘80s and ‘90s. He brought the street to a halt as onlookers crowded around for a gawk as he stood there impervious to their attention or undertook his ‘Zen walk’. And\, then\, with a wink or a flinch he tumbled their tension into mirth and awe. \nThe late Gay Byrne conducted a sympathetic interview\, with McGinty on The Late Late Show in 1988\, in which he dispelled many of the myths and ignorance which existed at the time about the AIDS virus of which he suffered. He died age 42. This is the most fitting of tributes to one of the city’s most cherished.

With the 40\,000 grant\, he’s created The Spider’s House\, a gothic tale set in a warped city space that reflects our own. \nBilled as a nightmare from a disordered mind\, the play follows a romance between Paulsa and Issy\, who are trying to escape the city limits. With this his new work\, Ford asks what relationships are permissible and who should be denied love. The play runs from the 27th of February to March 7th\, at 2:45pm and 7:45pm each day. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Dance Highlight: The River
DESCRIPTION:From football pitches to contemporary dance\, 17 women primarily from Ballybough and Sheriff Street will take to the stage in Project Arts Centre. \nFor the last 6 months the women have been trained in a unique and evolving dance practice by choreographer Maria Nilsson Waller and singer/composer Stace Gill/The Sei under their Flora Fauna Project: a multidisciplinary production house rooted in dance and music. \n \nThe women came from two GAA teams brought together by Dublin GAA player Michale Darragh MacAuley who is a supporter of the project in the NEIC.  “Football brought us together\, dancing is keeping us together” says Tracey/Ballybough GAA for Ma’s. \n \n“As a choreographer I am always looking for rawness and bravery in the performers\, and I decided to work with non-professional dancers. These women really bring it! I dream\, prepare and encourage and am careful not to put the filters of my own dance education on to what these dancers create.” Nilsson Waller says about the piece. \n \n“The River” will be the women’s first time on a professional stage and their comfort zones are being challenged to the max.  The last 6 months have been transformative for everyone involved. Sharing what they have learned will be a new level and a rare experience both for performers and audience. \n“Me kids asked me\, ‘Ma\, where ye goin?’ I’m goin’ to be meself for an hour”. – Jackie/Ballybough \nThe music is composed and performed live on stage by THE SEI / Stace Gill. \nStace Gill\, who herself started her dance training only a few years ago says: \n“Finding the flow between body and imagination is a game changer in life. These powerful women on stage completely embody this for the audience to see and feel.’ \n \nTHE RIVER is feminine\, loaded with echoes of traditional Dublin\, the second piece PIDGIN’ represents masculine spirit and multicultural Ireland. \nPidgin\, performed by internationally successful Irish/Nigerian dance artist Mufutau Yusuf\, refers to the simplified or bastardised language which came into existence as a result of contact between two or more languages\, occurring for example in situations like trade\, migration and colonisation. The piece is also a personal take on his own upbringing\, living his early childhood in Nigeria and then growing up in Ireland . \nThe River + Pidgin \nFriday 6th 7.30pm \nSaturday 2.30pm + 7.30 pm \nTICKETS projectartscentre.ie \nflorafaunaproject.com

SUMMARY:Theatre Highlight: Our New Girl
DESCRIPTION:Playwright Nancy Harris is no stranger to the stage of The Gate having adapted The Red Shoes in 2017 and making her Druid debut with The Beacon last October. First performed in London in 2012\, Our New Girl is knee-deep in dysfunctional family territory. \nAnnie\, an Irish nanny\, turns up unexpectedly in the affluent London home of Hazel who is coping with her pregnancy\, troubled son and Richard\, her plastic surgeon husband\, who is away on charitable work. Everything is simmering\, she’s the ingredient which brings it to the boil when Richard returns. It’s bears all the hallmarks of an excruciatingly taut psychological drama\, one both feared and beloved by the middle-classes.

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: I Am Diana De Brito
DESCRIPTION:I Am Diana De Brito (IAMDDB) is a Mancunian straight out of Gilles Peterson’s record box. The Mancunian rapper and singer brings a jazz-infused swagger to bear on her urban beats. She dropped a new\, three-track EP\, Kare Package just before Christmas and enlisted Toddla T to produce her new single Famous. It’s no surprise that she calls to mind Jill Scott’s soulful vibes and supported Lauryn Hill on her comeback tours. “Ain’t no pressure with the world – they want diamonds\, I want pearls\,” she sings on Sit Back. SUMMARY:Comedy Highlight: Histrionix
DESCRIPTION:In this new show as part of Scene+Heard\, history blends with fiction in increasingly absurd ways. At the beginning of the show\, a historian comes on stage to tell a lesser-known true story from history. But once a team of improvisers take to the stage to re-enact this story that they’ve never heard before\, the truth soon becomes an afterthought. Mistakes are made\, amplified and built off one another until this re-telling spirals out of control. Histrionix\, which boasts some of Ireland’s most experienced improvisers\, promises to leave the audience both more and less informed. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Caligari 100
DESCRIPTION:Robert Wiene’s Das Cabinet des Dr Caligari shook filmgoers worldwide when it premiered in Berlin on February 26th\, 1920. It changed the direction of the art form like no other film has since. Now presented in a definitive restoration\, the film’s chilling\, radically expressionist vision is set to grip viewers again. At a local carnival in a small German town\, hypnotist Dr. Caligari presents the somnambulist Cesare\, who can purportedly predict the future of curious fairgoers. But at night\, the doctor wakes Cesare from his sleep to enact his evil bidding… \nIncalculably influential\, the film’s nightmarishly jagged sets\, sinister atmospheric and psychological emphasis left an immediate impact in its wake (horror\, film noir\, and gothic cinema would all be shaped directly by it). \nThis special centenary screening with feature a new score performed live by Adrian Crowley\, Sean Mac Erlaine\, Matthew Nolan and Barry Adamson (Magazine / Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds) with live processing by Neil O’Connor. \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Walls Talk
DESCRIPTION:Walls Talk is a new dance piece for solo dancer\, Breandán de Gallaí (former Riverdancce lead)\, and singer\, Gina Boreham\, opening in Project Arts Centre. \nWhen I first heard Gina Boreham sing I marched straight up to her and said “We have got to do a project together!” Gina sings with Dunajska Kapelye (The Danube Band)\, a Gypsy/Balkan folk band\, and specialises in vintage jazz and blues classics. That night she sang Billie Holiday’s Deep Song. \nMy attachment to the music of this era was an intriguing element and definitely a good starting point. I’ve been listening to Billie Holiday\, Chet Baker\, Sarah Vaughan et al since I was a teenager. I am often struck with the sense of not necessarily belonging to my own time – that the mid 20th century might be a better fit for me. With Gina’s singing in mind\, I imagined that the show might be a sort of song cycle. \n \nThe name came to me over pints in O’Brien’s on Leeson Street. ‘Old man’ pubs seem to be blanketed with stories and memories: celebrations; fights; sorrowful times; secret love affairs; not unlike the layer upon layer of paint\, and pre-smoking-ban smoke embedded in the walls. “If these walls could talk” led on to Walls Talk.  As we live our lives we leave traces of ourselves behind – our actions\, feelings and thoughts clinging to the stuff we touch. \nThe original music arrangements were created by Paddy Mulcahy (Limerick)\, Fiachra Ó Corragáin (Kinsale)\, Joe Csibi (Dublin) & Zac Gvi (London). Songs include Seems Like Old Times\, I’m Fool to Want You\, Gloomy Sunday\, Deep Song\, For All We Know and I’ll Be Seeing You\, to name but a few. \nWalls Talk premieres on the week of the 25-29th February\, 7.30 pm in Project Arts Centre\, Dublin – find out more here. \nTickets €18 / 20

SUMMARY:Mamafesta Memorialising
DESCRIPTION:My mum has senile dementia. I made my last piece about her. But it wasn’t enough. I still have more to do and more to say. I’m worried that what’s happening to her will happen to me. So\, this piece is a memory exercise for three male dancers. All pushing to see how much abstract information our bodies can retain. The title comes from a line from the Irish writer James Joyce’s epic novel Finnegan’s Wake. It references a letter (or manifesto) written by Annalivia Plurabelle. Annalivia represents the archetypal female character in this extremely complex masterpiece and\, though she may not be a classic heroine\, she is very definitely all essence. It is this essence or shifting between past present and future that reminds me of the fragility of our own identity. If we are more than the sum of our parts\, what’s left as some of those parts disappear? Who are we when it’s all gone? In this work it’s my own demons I’m dealing with. My need to tell my stories. To not forget or be forgotten. – Philip Connaughton \nRuns from Wednesday March 19 to Saturday March 22
