SUMMARY:The Mary Wallopers save Paddy's Day
DESCRIPTION:One year ago\, Covid decimated the music industry and the first band out of the blocks were The Mary Wallopers. Unfazed by the immeasurable obstacle dropped in their path and forgoing all the industry grants\, the three Dundalk men self-built a pub/studio in their house\, becoming one of the first bands in the world to host a livestream on St. Patrick’s Day 2020. \nCreating a space where Wayne’s World meets Irish ballads\, the show brought joy with over 40 thousand people watching it in the first 24 hours alone. They connected people through the chat room and speaking directly to camera the Wallopers have made their show unmissable to those trapped in lockdown or overseas. \nTwo episodes later with one at Halloween and one at Christmas they introduced the Walloper’s extended family with musical guests like CMAT\, Daragh Lynch (Lankum)\, Radie Peat and Katie Kim alongside guest appearances from Junior Brother and Shane McGowan (The Pogues). \nTonight they’ll be raising our spirits as we drink ours with their inimitable hot take on trad and balladry. \nWe met them back in 2019 to talk to them about their pursuits as TPM.

SUMMARY:Lumo
DESCRIPTION:Little did the lads behind Lumo\, or any of us\, think we’d still be locked down a year later. The novelty has worn off and the cracks are showing. Nialler9\, Gavin Elsted and Simon Roche are gonna try to lift our spirits\, each from their respective gaffs\, and remind us that music can still transcend location. Still\, we are craving a communal sweat and would even willingly accept a pint spilled all over us too. \nDonations to support their efforts here please. \n \n

SUMMARY:Carlos Pesudo - Zero Space
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition\, which presents painting and video work\, has as its interest in what happens in the most immediate and hermetic reality of the creation space. Carlos Pesudo uses the figure of the egg or “zero space” as a metaphor for the isolation in which he finds himself in his studio\, where he works around listening to the minimum or the most elemental. In such scenario\, the artist asks the following question: what happens\, or how do things happen in a place where nothing happens? This is a collaboration with the Herrero De Tejada in Madrid.  View the exhibition.

SUMMARY:Launch: Source Magazine - Life Stories
DESCRIPTION:Photographs are associated with the momentary and the fleeting but they often appear most meaningful when they are placed in the context of a life. Issue 103 of Source explores the ties between photography and this familiar\, yet powerful\, narrative frame. Featuring portfolios from Nik Roche\, William Lakin and Margaret Mitchell\, alongside the winning article from their Writing Prize and many more features\, interviews\, and\, of course\, reviews. \nNik Roche adopts a highly immersive method for image making\, shaped by his interest in social change and the impact of institutions on individual behaviour. Source Issue 103 ‘Life Stories’ features images from his project It’s hard to report a stolen bike stolen\, which follows on from the work in his first monograph\, The Budgie Died Instantly (Setanta Books\, 2020). \nDr Annebella Pollen‘s academic research areas include mass photography\, popular image culture and histories of art\, craft\, design and dress\, especially in relation to marginal\, alternative and non-canonical visual and material forms. SUMMARY:Beasts - Gerard Byrne
DESCRIPTION:‘Beasts‘\, a series of black-and-white\, silver gelatin photographs was shot inside the Biologiska museet\, Stockholm\, a museum which housed a 360-degree diorama depicting a panoramic sweep of the Nordic wilderness\, in an elaborate mise-en-scène combining taxidermy with a painted backdrop. The museum remained almost unchanged between 1893 and its unexpected closure midway through Byrne’s production\, in 2017. \nThe artist’s interest in the museum was first inspired by the peculiar visual appearance of the diorama\, which is illuminated solely by natural light entering from roof skylights. For Gerard Byrne\, this dependence on daylight blurred the distinction between museum and camera. With its skylights functioning as lens aperture and its diorama of taxidermy animals poised in frozen photographic stasis\, the Biologiska Museet appeared proto-photographic\, it’s diorama a foreshadow of the Photograph itself. ‘Beasts’ is testament to in-animation; each print pictures the carefully poised relationship between photography and deadness. \nByrne also made a film inside the diorama\, ‘Jielemeguvvie guvvie sjisjnjeli’ (Film Inside an Image) 2015-2016. Presented as a Single Channel film and back projected onto a sculptural environment the work is played on a continuous loop. Byrne’s film takes us on a sweeping\, never-ending journey though the 360 degree diorama of the Biologiska museet in Stockholm. The unsettling experience is amplified by the accompanying sound track\, a multi-layerd cacophony of animal calls\, bird songs and various other sounds of the wild.

SUMMARY:Katie Kim & Radie Peat
DESCRIPTION:Islander\, as part of their Quiet Lights festival online series\, are delighted to present an exclusive audio-visual streaming event with two of Ireland’s finest creative minds\, Radie Peat & Katie Kim\, coming together for a rare and powerful collaboration for Nollaig na mBan. \nKatie Kim and Radie Peat of Lankum have joined forces with drummer/singer Eleanor Myler (Percolator)\, sonic wizard John Spud Murphy (producer of RTÉ Choice Music Prize award winning album The Livelong Day by Lankum)\, and the renowned sound artist/filmmaker Vicky Langan occupying the visual field\, this promises to be a unique collision of concepts for this one off performance. \nIn March\, Peat was on an extensive tour of the US with Lankum\, where Kim had relocated in 2019 and more recently opened for the band at their sold out Mercury Lounge show in NY. This turned out to be one of the last live gigs either would play in 2020. After surrendering a return to Ireland\, the two found themselves by chance living 500 meters apart with an abundance of time on their hands and a hunger to create. This collaborative project is the result of that time. \n\nComprising new arrangements of original material\, folk songs\, and reimagined contemporary songs\, this performance brings together elements of gothic folk\, ethereal doom\, the melding of intricate harmonies and combined raw vocal power. \nThis exclusive performance will go out as a live stream on Nollaig na mBan on Wednesday 6th January 2021 at 8pm GMT and viewers will be available to stream the performance for a limited 48 hours. \nInterview with The Last Mixedtape here. \nMake Me an Island podcast conversation between Donal Dineen and Radie Peat here. \n

Now local artists will occupy the space at 36 Dunville and transform it into Pandemme\, a gallery to showcase their recent work.  Come and meet the artists and learn about their work: Monika Crowley\, Margot Galvin (lead image)\, Mary O’Connor\, Serena Caulfield\, Dan Henson\, and jewellery designer Suzanne Rogers. \n‘Whilst some shows are lucky to have gone ahead this year\, others have closed as soon as they opened. Galleries have done a great job in using social media to keep our work out there\, but with restrictions lifting this week we’re hoping the community take the opportunity to come and meet us  and help support the arts’ says Crowley\, ‘but more than that\, it’s our opportunity to shake off the uncertainty and anxiety of 2020 and give two fingers to the pandemic”. \nPandemme is open on 36 Dunville Avenue until Christmas Eve\, from 9am-6pm daily \n\nMary O’Connor \n \nSuzanne Rogers \nMonika Crowley \n \nDaniel Henson \n \nSerena Caulfield

SUMMARY:The Nose Knows: Mark McGreevy
DESCRIPTION:In the first in a new series of solo presentations moving away from historical buildings to contemporary industrial settings\, Berlin Opticians Gallery presents The Nose Knows – a solo exhibition by invited artist Mark McGreevy. \nMcGreevy’s paintings are known for their texture and vibrancy of colour. In this exhibition his palette is full of pinks\, reds\, bright blues and greens. \nMark McGreevy\, The nose knows\, 2016\, Oil on canvas\, artist’s frame\, 70 x 90 cm\nThe colours are often applied in blocks that occupy separate\, designated areas\, as if the paint brush followed the lines of a colouring book\, a territory previously scribbled in with a crayon. There is a determination to his painterly gesture: the brushstrokes read as thick and expressive. \nMark McGreevy\, Shrink wrap for small pieces\, 2015-2019\, Oil on canvas\, artist’s frame\, 120 x 150 cm\, installation shot\nThe world portrayed by McGreevy is simultaneously enticing and estranged. He captures the mundane and utilitarian aspects of life or residual spaces\, which otherwise can go unnoticed. \nThose moments and places are often recorded in his sketch-books as a visual prompter\, adding to a collage of ideas that inform his painting process. Thus\, the reality offered by McGreevy is never fully defined and comes across as a tweaked and twisted version of what we experience. \nThere is a sense of out-of-placeness and incompatibility within the picture plane\, that corresponds with the awkwardness and unease of the subject-matter he depicts. \nMark McGreevy\, Microdosing\, 2016-2019\, Oil on canvas\, artist’s frame\,  50.5 x 41 cm\nA graduate of Ulster University\, Belfast\, McGreevy has previously had exhibitions at RHA\, The Lab Gallery\, Draiocht\, Dublin; The Third Space Gallery\, Belfast; The Crawford Gallery\, Cork and Katzen Art Centre\, Washington\, DC among others. He is currently based in Belfast. \nwww.berlinopticiansdublin.com \n\n\nImage Credit: Courtesy of the artist and Berlin Opticians Gallery\, Dublin \nFeature Image: Mark McGreevy\, Analogue Dog\, 2019\, Oil on canvas\, artist’s frame\, 90 x 120 cm

SUMMARY:Dublin International Comedy Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:A new film festival dedicated to comedy offers up some much needed winter levity with an online programme of films and live stand-up acts. \nVirtual live comedy acts include Emma Doran\, Killian Sundermann\, Michael Fry (who will share a new sketch) and Joe Rooney. Laughter has a therapeutic power. I love that about comedy. It’s soulfulness. I find comedy deeply soulful.” \nIn addition to the showcasing of Irish talent\, audiences can expect a diverse assortment of side splitting humour from the United Kingdom\, Australia\, New Zealand\, France and Denmark. \nMore info on the festival can be found on the website. \nTickets for the full festival are a mere €5 and can be purchased here.

SUMMARY:Bram Stoker Fest: I am NOT Legend
DESCRIPTION:Cult horror film Night of the Living Dead undergoes a radical reworking by Italian artist and filmmaker Andrea Mastrovito. \nCreating a screenplay composed entirely of quotes from famous films\, books and other sources; it calls to mind Christian Marclay’s acclaimed The Clock where he looped a 24-hour video montage of scenes from film and television that feature clocks or timepieces. \n \nMastrovito augments the film’s original frames to create a completely new story arc. His characters use the words and gestures of others to propel his narrative forward\, which Mastrovito likens to how people communicate today via social media and memes – reusing and recycling quotes and images from other sources to comment on their own experiences. \nThe accompanying score has been created by Matthew Nolan and Stephen Shannon. \nI am NOT Legend 9pm each night of the festival\, access link sent with booking\, €5 \nBram Stoker Festival runs from Friday October 30 to Monday November 2 \nFull programme details at bramstokerfestival.com

SUMMARY:DracuHa!
DESCRIPTION:Declaration of deadly here\, our editor is one of the co-producers of DracuHa! Originally conceived as a self-guided audio walk\, it has fallen foul of Level 5 restrictions and like much of 2020 has become an ‘at home’ experience. \nThe curdling call-out was made to some of our finest scribes to recount\, depict and imagine some horrors in the city. Expect horror hotlines\, violent brides\, goths\, werewolves and – the most dreaded horror of all – scavenging seagulls as your mind wanders on its original route from O’Connell Street to Molly Malone. \n \nThe sick ink is coming from humorists including Hannah Mamalis\, Séamas O’Reilly\, Sonya Kelly\, Kevin Lehane\, Michael Fry and Tony Cantwell. Visual interpretations of these tales by The Project Twins\, Holly Pereira and Max Halley which were originally meant to be projected on iconic buildings have been coverted into free\, limited edition\, poster prints. \nThe audio file for the tour will be available to download or stream from Friday October 30 at 10am via bramstokerfestival.com.
