SUMMARY:Bomb - Neil Dunne
DESCRIPTION:A show which explores the relationship between the artist and urban space. \nBomb exhibits a variety of paintings created in oil\, spray-paint and oil pastel originating as investigations into the built environment; this series has taken a peculiar format for what are fundamentally landscapes. Taking influence from the text SI International – (“Certain Shifting angles\, certain receding perspectives\, allow us to glimpse certain original conceptions of space” ) Neil Dunne has reimagined and explored the topographical locations of his native Dublin. \n \nThese works are in flux between abstraction and a recognisable visual language – a common thread exercised through form and structure has emerged\, an incoherent critique of culture and modern society are at the epicenter of this series upon which the audience can engage and play with. \nA vivid\, rhythmic approach to painting has emerged from Bomb\, encapsulating a range of studies over the past year\, he has offered an eclectic insight into the radical possibilities paint has to offer. Here we find Dunne’s work appearing as a fragmented set of compositions radically opposing any sense of formality\, each piece evolves and grows as the artist does. \nDunne’s work has developed a distinct language through his instinctive and gestural mark-making\, deriving from his deep interest in urban culture and background in printmaking. Runs September 9-26

SUMMARY:Alternate - Robyn Carey
DESCRIPTION:This collection of works abstractly visualises human emotions\, time and space. The title refers to two things. How human emotions are in a constant state of flux as time passes\, alternating between different mental states and the quantum physics theory of alternative realities and the multiverse/many worlds theory. If taking these theories as true\, they are linked in a sense that every emotion we ever feel happens simultaneously in the past\, present and future\, all at once\, and infinitely in other dimensions. Alternate aims to question and capture the beauty of this proposed theoretical phenomenon. \nhttps://vimeo.com/embed-redirect/596524421 \nRobyn Carey is a painter and printmaker based in Dublin. Her abstract expressionist works currently explore human perception of time and space. She aims to strike an honest and natural balance between contrasting elements\, often creating a sense of movement between them and thus unveiling an underlying narrative to the viewer. Her work is characterised by her expressive mark making and complex layered compositions. Her introspective artworks are energetic\, with emotion expressed through gestural mark making\, textures and mono printing. \n \nEach layer of paint is applied in response to the last symbolising human responses to emotion as time passes. In her compositions\, Pattern is hinted at\, but never perfectly realised\, drawing parallels to human behavioural patterns. A sense of movement and constant flux can be seen in her work. She paints with a sense of naivety and a humanistic quality. Her process driven abstraction defines texture\, tactility\, and colour interaction as the leading qualities of beauty in her work. Runs until September 19.

SUMMARY:PERCEPT/LOGOS: Colm Mac Athlaoich
DESCRIPTION:Colm Mac Athlaoich has flourished into one of the most exciting artists on the scene. After completing an MFA in Fine Art in Brussels\, he returns to the capital with a new show which takes its source from press photography of the Israeli Palestine conflict. \n“‘Percept’ (the sensory impression of an object)\, ‘Logos’ (appeal to logic) tries to find a way to question notions of neutrality and ambiguity when dealing with the subject of war. While remaining sensitive to the subject\, an attempt is made to extract the materiality of war from these images. \nEqually the relationship between photography and painting is brought into question by considering critical positioning and appropriation. The images go through a process of drawing studies to isolate the construction of the composition\, the finished works then become abstract collages of these elements.” \nHang Tough Contemporary\, Clarendon Row\, until August 29. \nmacathlaoich.com

SUMMARY:Bríd Higgins NíChinnéide - Still Until
DESCRIPTION:“Every restaurant\, cafe and salon has its own atmosphere. There is an excitement you feel when you enter a place – you don’t know what kind of encounters will unfold. There will be a busyness about the place that enhances the drink or the sandwich you came to buy. It could be glamorous or respectfully silent. You leave transformed by the experience. Your hair might be shorter\, you might be inspired by live music; or you could be drunk or maybe high on an interesting conversation you had with the person behind the counter. But when the people are gone\, these cafes\, pubs and clubs are only rooms with tables and chairs… When the shutters have been pulled down and the scent of frying food has evaporated the place becomes still.” \n \n\nBríd Higgins NíChinnéide is a figurative painter who usually paints people. She often paints from life\, studying living\, breathing subjects. In March 2020 she started to peer inside the windows of some of the businesses within her 5km radius. She noticed how these interiors had been changed by their emptiness. With the kind permission of the owners and managers she got a closer look. Still Until shows scenes from our recent past – painterly portraits of places that waited for our return.” \nOpens Thursday July 22 and runs until August 8

SUMMARY:Swing Into Summer: Sunday Jazz Gala Fundraiser for Phil Ware
DESCRIPTION:This Sunday sees a fantastic lineup of top-notch musicians come together virtually in aid of an important cause that’s very dear to our hearts. \nPhil Ware is one of the Irish jazz’s most celebrated musicians. In June 2020\,  the much-respected pianist and teacher\, suffered a rare form of stroke\, which left him unable to speak or to move the right side of his body. A group of his closest friends established The Phil Ware Trust for public donation to help Phil’s recovery and to support his needs into the future. \nAs part of their efforts they have put together a cracking Sunday Jazz Gala Fundraiser programme in a fitting tribute to an inspirational musician and educator.  Over the course of the day an array of outstanding musicians\, including special guest iconic jazz and blues wonderwoman\, Mary Coughlan will help create a perfect jazz soundtrack for your Sunday. There will also be opportunities to hear some stories from renowned members of the jazz world about Phil and his work throughout the day. \nPresented by host and jazz aficionado DJ Billy Ó hAnluain\, the lineup features contributions from rising singer-songwriter Jennifer McMahon\, vocal and instrumental-style improvisation from Dublin trio Berri\, and Sigur Rós influenced quartet ÄTSCH\, lead by guitarist Matthias Winkler. Romanian vocalist Aleka explores jazz standards from her debut album ‘Person I Knew’ in her unique style\, interspersing eastern rhythms\, as well as inspirations from Debussy\, Bartok and other classical composers. \nPoetry-lovers will enjoy the sweet voice and literary-inspired work of Emilie Conway\, while bi-lingual vocalist and composer Ríona Sally Hartman melds lush vocal harmonies\, acoustic softness and surrealist stories into her melodic songs. \nPhil Ware has contributed so much to the Irish music world as a pianist and educator before his illness\, and the organisers really hope to raise a good amount to support his long-term recovery towards independent living. \nSo why not tune in to the online stream\, sip on a cool drink and enjoy some new fresh sounds and old jazz favourites. \nAll monies donated to this benefit concert\, will go exclusively to cover costs associated with Phil’s medical care and ongoing rehabilitation. \nSunday 11th July\, 3pm-8pm | online via www.thefundforphil.com | Tickets €10-€30 \nTickets: https://www.thefundforphil.com/events/swing-into-summer.html \nDonate to the Fund for Phil at: https://ie.gofundme.com/f/the-fund-for-phil

SUMMARY:Make the world go away: Sarah Doyle
DESCRIPTION:We’re big fans and friends of photographer Sarah Doyle whose work has adorned our pages before. Her instagram account\, in itself\, should be shown as an example to all budding student photographers as to how best curate and develop an aesthetic. There’s bold colours\, subtle tonal shifts\, shadow plays and a set design consideration which elevates her work into a dreamy\, seductive\, space.  \n“I’m always engaged in a kind of exchange with the objects\, they feel like characters to me. These colours\, lines\, light and shadow are all expressions of this world where things can be worked out and the possibilities are endless\, it’s about creating your own world\,” says Sarah. \nMake the world go away is at Atelier Now until July 10 with a signed\, limited edition\, print entitled Pink Stairs available for €150. Wed – Sat\, 10am – 4pm.

SUMMARY:Nothing New Under the Sun - Delia Hamer
DESCRIPTION:“Ever since Helios’s chariot started rising in the East and galloping across the sky to set in the West\, life\, our human lives\, have been divided into light and darkness. Duality was introduced into our world on day one\, when the ominous words “let there be light!” were spoken. Two worlds formed: one drenched in light\, were virtues blossomed and one oneiric world\, where Apollo’s light could not penetrate and Dionysus dwelled in the shadows. To be said plainly: Good and evil have been part of our world since the beginning of times and our free will to choose between one or the other is what constitutes the cornerstone of our human condition. This is what this body of work is about. These paintings have a bitter sweet cadence to them\, on one side you can sense the eviscerating experience of shining a light onto what we have carefully hidden but on the other hand there is the strong reassuring feeling that you are not alone in this\, because truly… There is nothing new under the sun.” Delia Hamer \n \n \nHamer studied Painting at the renowned Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan 2014\, and holds a Masters Degree in illustration at the University of the Arts London 2016. After completing her studies\, Hamer worked in the fashion industry and in late 2018\, she decided to move to Lisbon in order to pursue her lifelong passion; becoming a full time artist.

SUMMARY:of late - Ciara Roche
DESCRIPTION:Ciara Roche’s exhibition\, of late\, at mother’s tankstation\, features over thirty small-scale oil paintings\, many on paper\, documenting the tasteful complexities inherent to the art and science of presenting things we don’t really need. \n\nIn her ‘VS’ series\, desolate\, but glowingly lit\, lingerie departments\, somewhat reminiscent of the notorious ‘Father Ted’ (S02E11) episode\, chart the range and display strategies of the Victoria Secrets’ ‘Sexy’ range. Taped yellow arrows on the floor indicate a one-way-COVID-traffic\, supply an escape system. Roche’s funny\, cool\, dispassionate paintings supply sufficient detail to make complex choices; to order the right SMEG or Dyson product for our ‘ideal’ Instagram moment. If in doubt\, to a personal capacity for good taste\, we could of course always rely on the aesthetic discipline of IKEA to co-ordinate our interior world – this goes with that.\n\n \n\nTellingly\, the artist notes: “This year I moved into my own house; renting from my family meant that I could do a bit more with the house in terms of decorating\, changing layouts. This led me to the ‘need’ to spend more time looking at such places as IKEA\, various furniture shops\, appliance stores\, and I think this is what led me on to paint some of these spaces and subjects. Was I painting my aspirations? Perhaps I would have liked to own a coffee machine\, but as soon as I made the painting\, I no longer felt the desire. Perhaps I never really had the desire at all\, and I might be a little annoyed at the world for tricking me into thinking that I did”. [non serviam] \nCiara Roche received an MA from IADT\, in 2019 and produced an engagingly significant show\, ‘Here and Away’\, at the LAB\, Dublin in 2019. She presently lives and works\, nicely isolated\, in rural Co. Wexford. \n\n\nRuns until Saturday July 3. Viewings by appointment on Thursday-Saturday. Schedule a time here.

SUMMARY:Segments - Samuel Walsh
DESCRIPTION:Samuel Walsh’s small segment drawings are based on sections of larger drawings\, which he has always included in his practice since 1977. He maintains that scale does not diminish the work’s intensity or discipline value\, and subliminally Walsh brings aspects of upbringing\, culture\, travels\, and personal associations and relationships into his creative practice. \nThese drawings are made using a brush soaked in ‘encre de Chine’ (Chinese ink) as well a range of liquid mediums\, especially acrylic gouache when introducing a second or third colour. Each drawing requires three linear coats to establish a finish \nWalsh states that he does not always represent the world but he lives in it\, asking difficult questions and challenging his audience with his ideas translated into two-dimensional forms. According to him\, “there is nothing worse than passivity in the face of art or art that is passive in meeting an audience.” \nRuns until June 26\, online shop here

SUMMARY:From Airfield To Aran: Get Knitting!
DESCRIPTION:The creative folk at Airfield are looking forward to introducing a diverse national audience to the age-old traditions of Irish wool processing\, natural plant dyes and creative knitting techniques this weekend\, as part of an innovative new collaboration with Creative Ireland and Cruinniú na nÓg. \nLiving on an island where sheep are intrinsic to the landscape\, entire generations can probably lay claim to a grandmother who knit them their own unique woollen jumper\, even if some of these precious family heirlooms may occasionally have been mislaid while dancing at the disco… \nNow it seems the art of knitting is currently undergoing a bit of a resurgence\, with fresh efforts underway to encourage the youth of the land to take up their needles and get clacking. \n \nThis month sees Creative Ireland and Airfield Estate join forces to celebrate Cruinniú na nÓg\, Ireland’s national day of creativity for children\, with a series of knitty-gritty activities on Saturday\, 12th June 2021\, designed to spark interest and get people knitting. \nHosted online by Airfield Estate\, the event includes a unique suite of creative on-line resources including worksheets\, videos and workshops\, through which children will be encouraged to foster an affinity with Irish wool\, while exploring the magic of natural plant dyes along the way. \nDesigned for 8-18 year olds\, a range of creative knitting workshops feature opportunities to learn more about knitting with Airfield’s Jacob sheep wool\, using traditional stitches. There will also be opportunities to learn more about the heritage of Irish wool\, as well as the ancient arts of sheep shearing and spinning. \n \nThe craft of knitting has long proven itself a valuable life skill\, providing children with a creative outlet\, while improving dexterity and hand-eye coordination. Studies show that knitting can significantly improve social skills\, helping provide a tangible sense of achievement\, while helping harness innate skills and master new techniques. \n \nThere’s also a Natural Dye Plant ID Walk\,  highlighting the everyday plants you can use at home to dye wool. A series of videos will also be available across social media to assist budding knitters. \nActivities are open open to all from ages 8 to 18 years\, with registration required.  Each workshop lasts 50 minutes. Following online registration\, participants can access activity worksheets on subjects including Heritage of Irish wool\, Creative Knitting and and Natural plant dyes are available to download in English\, Irish and Polish. \nRegister on-line here and share your knitting pics using the hashtags: #LetsgetKnitting #DyeingtoKnit #AirfieldEstate #CreativeIreland \n The event takes place on Saturday\, 12th June 2021\, and harnesses the creative energy of previous Woolapalooza festivals at Airfield.\n \nFor more see: airfield.ie/cruinniu-na-nog \nInstagram @AirfieldEstate @CreativeIreland \nFacebook: AirfieldEstate CreativeIrl \nTwitter @AirfieldEstate @CreativeIrl

SUMMARY:Ireland's Generation X with Mark O'Halloran
DESCRIPTION:Join Professor Barry McCrea with writer and actor Mark O’Halloran in this edition of Ireland’s Generation X?\, a series of conversations about Ireland’s in-between generation. \n“Generation X” describes the group of people born between 1965 and 1985\, a generation caught between Baby Boomers and Millennials characterised by anti-establishment slacker culture\, cynicism\, irony\, and— after the global economic crash — negative equity. An American term describing American lives\, the moniker perhaps fails to accurately represent the experience of those who came of age during the 1980s and 1990s in Ireland. This series invites artists and writers who grew up in an Ireland shaped by the Troubles\, social justice movements\, EU membership\, the Peace Process\, and the Celtic Tiger\, to share their work and reflect on the social and cultural influences at home and abroad. \nPresented by MoLI in partnership with the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies at the University of Notre Dame.

SUMMARY:Queer Utopia - Mariette Feeney
DESCRIPTION:Our world is in upheaval\, we face an existential threat both in terms of radical and rapid environmental change\, in terms of ever-increasing violent political extremism on the far right\, and a government that seems to work against our interests at every turn. As we live in the world today\, asking ourselves and our community what we want to be free of\, Queer Utopia engages with queer pleasure\, love\, joy\, and friendship\, encouragingly asking; what will we keep? \nQueer Utopia is a collaborative sculptural and digital vision of a queer future: a pink\, joyful\, playful space created in response to a series of discussions between the artist and other queer people. For some\, queer utopia was a physical place\, a home\, a building\, or a forest filled with the people they love\, and for others\, it was a political statement. Our queer utopia is a place of freedom\, of righteous anger\, a place full to the very brim with loving and radical care for our comrades. The world we live in right now is often scared of us\, and in turn\, we are often scared of it; this exhibition serves as a fleeting glimpse into that peaceful\, beautiful\, queer future we are hoping for. \nQueer Utopia by Mariette Feeney runs at A4 Sounds until May 30.

SUMMARY:Beacons - Daragh Muldowney
DESCRIPTION:Photographer Daragh Muldowney has been travelling to Lake Baikal\, Siberia\, the largest freshwater lake on the planet\, for the past three years. He has been compiling work for his latest exhibition which documents his many trips to this alluring area of breath-taking natural beauty\, creating stunning images that illustrate the immense attraction of the ice there and the small trees that mark out the road traversing the frozen lake. \nLake Baikal is one of the most biodiverse places on earth as it is home to thousands of species of plants and animals\, many of which are endemic to the region. In winter\, temperatures drop as low as -40°C and the lake becomes a vast frozen plain. Crossing the lake can be a hazardous journey as the ice comes under huge pressure causing it to either break apart exposing the frigid water below or crush together creating large jagged hummocks. To help travellers across the ice\, the locals mark out an ice road by drilling holes and planting small pine trees that act as markers\, ‘beacons’ guiding the way. \nPhotographing this ancient road system was a fascinating experience for Muldowney in many ways and he feels that his documentation of this unusual and unique way of life is a beautiful human story that also highlights the immense natural beauty of Lake Baikal. \nRuns until June 18 (viewing by appointment only from Monday to Friday\, 9am to 5.30pm)

SUMMARY:The Mary Wallopers save Paddy's Day
DESCRIPTION:One year ago\, Covid decimated the music industry and the first band out of the blocks were The Mary Wallopers. Unfazed by the immeasurable obstacle dropped in their path and forgoing all the industry grants\, the three Dundalk men self-built a pub/studio in their house\, becoming one of the first bands in the world to host a livestream on St. Patrick’s Day 2020. \nCreating a space where Wayne’s World meets Irish ballads\, the show brought joy with over 40 thousand people watching it in the first 24 hours alone. They connected people through the chat room and speaking directly to camera the Wallopers have made their show unmissable to those trapped in lockdown or overseas. \nTwo episodes later with one at Halloween and one at Christmas they introduced the Walloper’s extended family with musical guests like CMAT\, Daragh Lynch (Lankum)\, Radie Peat and Katie Kim alongside guest appearances from Junior Brother and Shane McGowan (The Pogues). \nTonight they’ll be raising our spirits as we drink ours with their inimitable hot take on trad and balladry. \nWe met them back in 2019 to talk to them about their pursuits as TPM.

SUMMARY:Carlos Pesudo - Zero Space
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition\, which presents painting and video work\, has as its interest in what happens in the most immediate and hermetic reality of the creation space. Carlos Pesudo uses the figure of the egg or “zero space” as a metaphor for the isolation in which he finds himself in his studio\, where he works around listening to the minimum or the most elemental. In such scenario\, the artist asks the following question: what happens\, or how do things happen in a place where nothing happens? This is a collaboration with the Herrero De Tejada in Madrid.  View the exhibition.

SUMMARY:Launch: Source Magazine - Life Stories
DESCRIPTION:Photographs are associated with the momentary and the fleeting but they often appear most meaningful when they are placed in the context of a life. Issue 103 of Source explores the ties between photography and this familiar\, yet powerful\, narrative frame. Featuring portfolios from Nik Roche\, William Lakin and Margaret Mitchell\, alongside the winning article from their Writing Prize and many more features\, interviews\, and\, of course\, reviews. \nNik Roche adopts a highly immersive method for image making\, shaped by his interest in social change and the impact of institutions on individual behaviour. Source Issue 103 ‘Life Stories’ features images from his project It’s hard to report a stolen bike stolen\, which follows on from the work in his first monograph\, The Budgie Died Instantly (Setanta Books\, 2020). \nDr Annebella Pollen‘s academic research areas include mass photography\, popular image culture and histories of art\, craft\, design and dress\, especially in relation to marginal\, alternative and non-canonical visual and material forms. She is a Reader at University of Brighton and writes the Source online column Flea Market Photobooks. Issue 103 ‘Life Stories’ features her review of Good Pictures: A History of Popular Photography by Kim Beil. \nplant 001 – william lakin\n  \n \nmargaret mitchell \n

SUMMARY:Beasts - Gerard Byrne
DESCRIPTION:‘Beasts‘\, a series of black-and-white\, silver gelatin photographs was shot inside the Biologiska museet\, Stockholm\, a museum which housed a 360-degree diorama depicting a panoramic sweep of the Nordic wilderness\, in an elaborate mise-en-scène combining taxidermy with a painted backdrop. The museum remained almost unchanged between 1893 and its unexpected closure midway through Byrne’s production\, in 2017. \nThe artist’s interest in the museum was first inspired by the peculiar visual appearance of the diorama\, which is illuminated solely by natural light entering from roof skylights. For Gerard Byrne\, this dependence on daylight blurred the distinction between museum and camera. With its skylights functioning as lens aperture and its diorama of taxidermy animals poised in frozen photographic stasis\, the Biologiska Museet appeared proto-photographic\, it’s diorama a foreshadow of the Photograph itself. ‘Beasts’ is testament to in-animation; each print pictures the carefully poised relationship between photography and deadness. \nByrne also made a film inside the diorama\, ‘Jielemeguvvie guvvie sjisjnjeli’ (Film Inside an Image) 2015-2016. Presented as a Single Channel film and back projected onto a sculptural environment the work is played on a continuous loop. Byrne’s film takes us on a sweeping\, never-ending journey though the 360 degree diorama of the Biologiska museet in Stockholm. The unsettling experience is amplified by the accompanying sound track\, a multi-layerd cacophony of animal calls\, bird songs and various other sounds of the wild.
