SUMMARY:Football as Never Before - A Celebration of George Best
DESCRIPTION:“Football is working-class ballet. It’s an experience of enchantment. For an hour and a half\, a different order of time unfolds and one submits oneself to it. A football game is a temporal rupture with the routine of the everyday: ecstatic\, evanescent and\, most importantly\, shared. At its best\, football is about shifts in the intensity of experience. At times\, it’s like Spinoza on maximizing intensities of existence. At other times\, it’s more like Beckett’s Godot\, where nothing happens twice.” – Simon Critchley \nFOOTBALL AS NEVER BEFORE (Fußball wie noch nie) – 1970 I Hellmuth Costard I Germany I 105mins –  is legendary among soccer aficionados and one of the great works of post-WWII German cinema. \nThis hypnotic portrait of Man U legend George Best trains multiple cameras on the revered footballer over the complete course of a match against Coventry City. Made at the height of Best’s fame and tabloid notoriety\, Costard’s film focuses insistently on Best—warming up\, looking restless and bored\, waiting tactically to unleash his genius—rather than the on-pitch action to arrive at a sublime and revealing rumination on celebrity and a tantalizing glimpse of the man behind the myth. \nIt’s hard to imagine a filmmaker focusing on a single player for an entire game or match\, but that’s just what German filmmaker Hellmuth Costard did in 1970 – filmed Manchester United star George Best for an entire match (long before British artist Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno made their 2006 variant Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait). \nThis month sees the film presented at The National Concert Hall with a live musical accompaniment created by Matthew Nolan and Bryan O’Connell in collaboration with some of the finest musicians from the contemporary music scene in Ireland. This special event marks the 20th anniversary of Best’s passing. Introduced by Connell Vaughan & Mick O’Hara\, School of Art and Design\, at TU Dublin. \nPresented with the support of Bohemians F.C. and ITV Sport. Presented by Homebeat in association with NCH \nTickets here.

DESCRIPTION:Woman in Stem and Feral / Pen are set to host a club event in Curveball at The Button Factory on Friday\, November 21st. Expect electronic pop\, alt-pop and plenty of cheeky energy sprinkled in”. \nFor this event they have invited Sleepless Beauty; the club culture disruptor who colours outside the lines — from festivals to mainstage sets and underground clubbing; this skilled decks provocateur takes crowds on a peak-time joyride laced with playful twists and turns. \nThere will be no Zoom link for this meeting\, so in person attendance is compulsory. SUMMARY:Stephanie Deady - Emotional Calculus
DESCRIPTION:“Thrilling\, quicksilver arrangements of fierce movement\, Deady’s new paintings are also\, and simultaneously\, models of balance\, poise and restraint: amalgams of sensibility and sense\, feeling and thought. With their intricate\, concentric patterning and vigorous\, rhythmic pulse\, they relate metaphorically to the currency of daily life\, the colour of moods and feelings and the dynamics of human relationships. \nOccupying a space free from the rules of naturalistic representation\, the paintings fuse inner and outer worlds\, and allow for a longer\, considered view over time. The energies of the compositions are in most cases generated by two adjoining figures\, and the way they create and are in turn shaped by the traffic of interaction between them. \nPowerful internal currents animate each of them\, whole worlds of feeling. As with the artist’s earlier Measure for Measure works\, this entails a powerful intimation of bodily presence and action: a choreography of stance\, attitude\, movement\, gesture\, nuance – and vision. Colour\, sparing yet intense\, sets the temperature of the mood. Spatially\, we are in a zone as expansive as a biblical desert\, and as abstract\, in which we try to orient ourselves.” –  Aidan Dunne \nOpening Thursday 20th November at 6pm\, Stephanie Deady – Emotional Calculus runs at The Kevin Kavanagh Gallery from Thursday November 20th – Saturday December 20th 2025 \nFeature Image: Stephanie Deady\, Emotional Calculus\, oil on birch plywood\, 26 x 35.5 cm\, 2025

SUMMARY:Undercurrent: As Below\, So Above
DESCRIPTION:Undercurrent: As Below\, So Above brings together the work of Kat Austen\, Lauren Moffatt and Siobhán McDonald developed during their participation in S+T+ART4WaterII in residence in Galway\, Belfast and Dublin port. The projects explore and reflect on ports as interdisciplinary liminal spaces for reimagining our entanglements with water\, technology\, and ecology. \nLauren Moffatt’s Chorcorallium immerses visitors in speculative reef ecologies where industrial debris becomes the foundation for imagined coral life\, shaped by collective voices and artificial intelligence. \nKat Austen’s ~~ Not Breaking ~~ ~~ This Wave Drowns Hate ~~ listens to the ocean through microplastics and community-created AI\, offering visions of symbiotic futures. \n \nSiobhán McDonald’s SHAPESHIFTER traces Dublin Port’s shifting identities\, from wetlands to rising seas\, layering scientific data with film\, painting\, and sculpture to reveal unseen histories and fragile futures. \nTogether\, these works transform ports and oceans into sites of imagination and repair\, using art and technology to question how we might live with\, listen to\, and learn from water in an age of crisis and change. \nBeta\, the Arts & Technology Festival\, will run from November 7th to 23rd. SUMMARY:Samhain Agus Science 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) is once again conjuring up the spooky side of science and history with the return of its much-loved festival\, Samhain agus Science. Now in its eighth year\, the festival blends cutting-edge research with Celtic traditions to explore where science\, culture and the supernatural collide. Following a number of spectacular events last week\, the festival wraps with three fascinating events today and tomorrow. \n1. The Demon’s in the Detail sees Theoretical Physicist and Senior Lecturer in Physics at Bristol University\, Felix Flicker\, present a talk on the surprising rich history of demons in physics and the various 19th century thought experiments that invoked demons as imagined agents capable of superhuman powers. He will then present ongoing work in which we seek to detail a lesser-known modern example of demons in physics: Pines’ demon\, a new type of particle observed in 2023. 7pm\, Monday Nov 3rd\, Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies. Doors 6.30pm. \n2. Magma in Motion\, an engaging science event presented by researchers from the Geophysics Section of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies and the Dublin Magmatism Group that explores the dynamic forces beneath Earth’s surface. 6pm Tuesday Nov 4th\, M4 Lecture theatre\, Museum Building TCD. Doors 6.30pm. \n3. Medieval Murder Mysteries: Homicide in Early Irish Law a mesmerising talk by Dr Viktoriia Krivoshchekova\, post-doctoral scholar in the School of Celtic Studies at DIAS\, on how medieval Irish law dealt with murder\, especially when the identity of the killer was not obvious. It will explore how such cases were treated by the law and what methods could be used to investigate them to answer the age-old question: “whodunnit?” 7pm – 8pm Tuesday Nov 4th\, Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies. Doors 6.30pm. \nAll events are free and are designed for a general audience\, welcoming everyone from curious newcomers to seasoned science enthusiasts to learn more about the world around us. \nTo register your attendance and book your place visit Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Geraldine O'Neill - First It Flickers
DESCRIPTION:First it flickers and then it tips (us out of the Holocene). \nArtist Geraldine O’Neill has long responded to the increasing confrontation with human engagement and relationship with the ecosystem\, in particular the Anthropocene whose traces are now embedded within the geological layers of the Earth’s structure. Her new exhibition\, Flicker\, Flicker\, responds to the escalating tension between humanity and the natural world. Her work speaks directly to the Anthropocene\, our current epoch\, where human presence is inscribed into the geological fabric of the earth. \nFor O’Neill\, this presence is made vivid through the everyday. Domestic references\, images of her children\, and items from her studio mingle with art-historical fragments\, still birds\, and household detritus. These layered references move between the personal and the collective\, situating the intimacy of home life within broader cultural and ecological frameworks. \nO’Neill’s distinctive painterly approach\, grounded in conceptual rigour and technical mastery\, reanimates these instances across time and memory. Through her colour-saturated virtuosity\, she creates surfaces that are at once sobering and luminous\, reflecting on the fragility of our world while offering a space of haunting beauty. \nThe exhibition runs from October 16th – November 15th 2025 at Kevin Kavanagh Gallery. \nFeature Image: Geraldine O’Neill\, Mise en scène\, 2025
