SUMMARY:Dubliners: Mario Sughi
DESCRIPTION:An artist and a writer put the city where they live\, walk and love at the centre of their work. Their gaze is attracted\, more than by the places\, by the people who pass through it every day. They are intrigued by the stories that are hidden behind that multitude of faces\, ordinary and at the same time unique stories that deserve to be imagined and then told. (…) \nThe juxtapositions between writing and image work by analogies\, sometimes obvious\, other times barely perceptible\, in an intense dialogue that plays on the contrast between the density of the text and the essentiality of the tableaux. The real common denominator of this process is the city of Dublin\, always present even if in the background\, with its atmosphere\, its colours and above all its sea. But what remains after immersing oneself in the creative universes of these two artists\, and their original approach to being together and talking to each other\, is the overall emotion of the lives of others\, which we always look at from afar\, but which in the end\, tell us about ourselves. \n \nMARIO SUGHI (nerosunero) is an Italian painter and illustrator based in Dublin. He participated in the 54th Venice Biennale\, the Italian Pavilion in the World\, at the Italian Institute of Culture (Dublin 2011) and his work has been selected for nine of the recent RHA Annual Exhibition (Dublin 2012–2021). \n\n\n\nMIA GALLAGHER is based in Dublin. She writes novels\, stories and non-fiction and has devised\, written and performed for the stage and a contributing editor of the Irish literary journal The Stinging Fly. \nUntil April 10 \n

SUMMARY:Aches - Division
DESCRIPTION:This new body of work features eighteen original pieces\, encompassing unique mediums such as wood\, glass and canvas. Throughout ‘Division’\, Aches has masterfully craed a cohesive and unique visual through-line\, by using a dynamic and consistent colour theory. This continual thread aesthetically unites the different mediums to form an electrifying collection that is definitely not to be missed. As part of the exhibition\, there will also be an exclusive fine-art print release. \n \nʻDivisionʼ is Aches’ bold\, confronting artistic response to the events of the past two years. The body of work speaks to the division and isolation of people\, where previously solid and established social circles began to splinter due to enforced separation. Layers of vibrant colour are strictly separated and overlapped to represent the fragmentation and division in society – executed in Aches’ distinctive style – and speak specifically to feelings of anxiety\, loneliness\, and disillusionment. \n\nUntil April 10

SUMMARY:Abomination: A DUP Opera
DESCRIPTION:Conor Mitchell’s crafts a sublime retort to the DUP’s shameful homophobia by turning the words back on them. \nRevolutionary in form\, Abomination centres on the scandalous live radio interview given by NI Politician Iris Robinson\, when she referred to homosexuality as an ‘abomination’ – an act that has gone down in Irish queer history and instantly re-ignited the Northern Irish equality debate. \nWith their unique high-impact\, multi-disciplinary style\, the Belfast Ensemble wrap this story in a fresh web of incendiary historical comments by DUP members on the subject of gay rights\, marriage equality\, ‘poofs’ and ‘perverts’ to shockingly theatrical effect – challenging the power of words in the hands of the powerful. \nContemporary\, political\, comic\, and emotionally complex\, this riotous Northern Irish original redefined what a 21st-century opera could say\, and why… and with just a touch of drag! \nEnds Saturday April 2 with matinee at 2pm that day also.

SUMMARY:Surrounded by Sea
DESCRIPTION:This photography exhibition is conceived by Irish artists Karen Cowley (Wyvern Lingo) and photographer Ruth Medjber\, in aid of Refugee Rescue. An open entry call went out last month inviting submissions based around the conception of the sea and what it means to our island nation. A few pals such as Hozier have been enlisted to offer their vistas also. “The sea gives me the feeling of familiarity that I can tap into anywhere in the world. I use it to soothe my anxious mind when I travel. I let the sound wash over my noisy thoughts and drown out the sounds of a blustering world and re-center me with its infinite rhythm. I focus my eyes on the horizon and blissfully zone out. It’s meditation\, nostalgia\, comfort and peace. The sea is my home from home\,” says Medjber. \nThe Dean Art Space\, Harcourt Street\, Friday April 1 to Sunday April 3. \nrefugeerescue.org

SUMMARY:Dead Present - Salvatore of Lucan
DESCRIPTION:‘Hello\, I’m Salvatore of Lucan and I am 28 years old now. ‘Dead Present’ is a show which starts on the left with me in work and goes right across to me as a blemmyae. There’s me in the pub too and then me eating a takeaway afterwards. Then me dead under a pot of flowers and also a still life of some dead flowers. After that there’s a family portrait before the painting of the blemmyae. The show takes its name from the painting of the dead flowers as they were a gift and are now dead. You may notice I am dead present in the work too. There is a stained glass window of me getting sick and that’s it. Questions you may not ask me include\, Why do you paint yourself all the time? and Where are you from?’ \nRecent solo exhibitions include Melodrama\, Hang Tough Contemporary (2021)\, Show of Himself\, Pallas Projects (2018). Recent selected group shows include Dubliners\, Pallas Projects\, 6th Biennial of Painting\, Zagreb (2021)\, Silver\, Kevin Kavanagh (2019)\, Agnes and I\, The Library Project (2019)\, Island Life\, Kevin Kavanagh and The Custom House\, Westport (2018). Salvatore of Lucan was awarded the Zurich Portrait prize in 2021 for his painting Me Ma Healing Me. He was also awarded the Whyte’s Award\, nominated for Hennessy Craig Award in the RHA\, appeared in RTE’s ‘Exhibitionists’ documentary and has received the Arts Council’s Next Generation Award. \nRuns until April 23

SUMMARY:Mutualisms - Peter Smyth
DESCRIPTION:‘Mutualisms’\, Peter Smyth’s debut solo show\, is inspired by the often unseen and abstract operations within plant ecology. \nIn his work\, Peter considers the parallels between the natural occurrences of plant ecology\, and that of his painting process – specifically\, the painting’s relationship to the digital processes that are used to create them. \nAs part of his process\, Peter uses computer generated renders as creative stimulus\, and translates them into original painted works. 3D models are drawn from facets of plant ecology\, above and below ground. \n“Mutualism is usually defined as an interaction between individuals of different species which result in beneficial effects. To me\, the painting is entangled in a mutualistic relationship with the digital medium.” \nWhat we see exhibited are a collection of colourful\, abstract paintings – no digital pieces. Similar in theory to plant life\, where we often see what is above the ground\, not the processes underneath that initiate the growth. \n \nImages from Peter’s Studio (taken by Johnny Mallin) \nThe exhibition continues until Saturday 2 April\, opening Wed-Sat\, 10am-4pm each week\, no booking required. \nAll exhibited artworks will be available to buy online at www.ateliernow.ie once the exhibition opens.  \n \n

SUMMARY:Curtis Harding
DESCRIPTION:Nothing like a bit of soul for the soul and\, if that’s your bag then\, Harding is your man. The Atlanta-based artist croons with tremulous ardour on his third solo effort If Words Were Flowers. Like Leon Bridges\, Harding pickles the past and nods to the present. The title is a tribute of sorts to a phrase that his mother told him when he was a child – ”Give me my flowers while I’m still here.” You’ll hear echoes of everyone from Sly Stone to Curtis Mayfield to Gil Scott-Heron. “Music immortalizes you\,” says Harding\, “So if this is the last thing I’m going to say to someone\, it’s going to be some hopeful shit.”

SUMMARY:Deck - A Collection of Found Playing Cards: Claire Halpin
DESCRIPTION:Stemming from the artist’s habit picking up playing cards she has found over many years\, Deck is a snapshot in time and place of a collection largely amassed on the streets of Dublin 1.  Making her own rules however\, the collection spans continents. Every card has a back story\, real and imagined. In different states of repair and decay\, the cards are annotated with whatever biro or marker was closest to hand with where and when each one was found before being added to the chart cataloguing and mapping the collection in an attempt to complete a full deck. How can so many cards have been mislaid? Were they up someone’s sleeve? Thrown away in a losing streak? Did they simply blow away? Each card represents a redundant pack from whence they came. \n“Every card has a back story\, real and imagined. In different states of repair and decay\, the cards are annotated with whatever biro or marker was closest to hand with where and when each one was found before being added to the chart cataloguing and mapping the collection in an attempt to complete a full deck.” \nIn 17 years working in the area I’m not sure I’ve seen anyone playing cards on the street.  In Claire’s short commute from her home in Summerhill to her studio in Talbot Street\, finding cards and adding them to her collection\, became almost ritualistic. For this exhibition Claire has chosen not only to fill the windows of the Cube space at the LAB with these cards but also invites audiences to listen to the stories she’s collected of varying “house rules” for old favourites and games previously unknown to her. The very act of installing the show in the window has led to heated debates about rules with passers by\, some of whom were subsequently recorded at the card table in the exhibition. \nClaire Halpin’s work explores themes and concepts around contested territories and histories through painting\, video and installation. Recently acquired by IMMA\, a common concern across her work is an interest in perception and interpretation of images.  Her work raises questions about how we choose to record history and the veracity of painting\, photography\, and the media in documenting future history. \nThis exhibition captures the artist’s personal experience on her daily journey to make the paintings for which she is best known while drawing on her fascination with cultural exchange\, storytelling and social fabric.

SUMMARY:SKYWALK - An astronaut looks back on the beauty of Earth from space in Steve Martland’s dreamy work
DESCRIPTION:Described as an ” “iconoclastic composer who crossed musical boundaries to create a distinctive\, edgy sound” Martland curated the infamous Factory Classical label of Factory Records. This is the first concert in a two-part retrospective on the works of the late Steve Martland\, juxtaposed with those of Renaissance composer Clément Janequin. \nCenturies apart\, Renaissance composer Clément Janequin and 20th-century composer Steve Martland both sought to reflect the sounds of daily life that surrounded them. For Janequin\, this meant bird calls\, street noises or\, in the final work of this concert\, La bataille\, a vivid depiction of the sounds of battle\, complete with trumpet calls\, cannon fire\, and the cries of the wounded. Martland evokes a different kind of battleground in Street Songs—with something of a medley of songs from children’s games\, often heard in the streets and on the playground. \n \n\nWhile we briefly depart from earthly life in Martland’s Skywalk\, imagining an astronaut walking in space and looking back on the planet in all its beauty\, we are grounded throughout by Janequin’s mass based on La bataille which weaves throughout the concert\, introducing us to some new borrowed element of the work with each movement\, before we finally arrive back at the chanson in its original form.\n\n\nProgramme\nMissa La Bataille (Kyrie\, Gloria) – Clément Janequin (France\, c. 1485-1558)\nSkywalk – Steve Martland (UK\, 1954-2013)\nMissa La Bataille (Credo) – Clément Janequin\nStreet Songs – Steve Martland\nMissa La Bataille (Sanctus\, Benedictus\, Agnus) – Clément Janequin\nThe Shepherd’s Song – Steve Martland\nLa Bataille – Clément Janequin

SUMMARY:Words as colour not language - Paul Hallahan
DESCRIPTION:Paul Hallahan is an Irish artist whose work is primarily based in painting\, but he also works in sculpture and video. Interests within his work commonly focus on how we interact with nature\, taking art as a form or by-product of nature and our civilisation. Using various methods and techniques Paul’s paintings are built up of thin layers on mostly raw canvases which allow light to move through the works and allow the works change within the locations they are positioned. This has always been of interest to Hallahan as he wanted the works to be active to the viewer and transcend the composition and initial image of the work. \n \n“The themes in my exhibition ‘Words as colour not language’\, look at organic matter within our landscape\, our relationship to the dense woodlands and crevices\, especially woodlands near the west coast of Ireland\, South Donegal\, Leitrim and Sligo. Previous interests in my works have looked to ideas of the larger landscape such as horizons in urban settings and our relationship to the rising and setting sun within the built up environment. This new exhibition will encircle a work titled “Lotus”\, a large dense painting made with organic matter and magnetic fields in mind. The exhibition will present works that I have worked on throughout 2020 and 2021\, most never seen before but all made during my transition from urban to country living. Since moving to south Donegal I have been able to explore the landscape like I never could while based in a city and this has allowed me to investigate ideas within the grime and ever changing undergrowth seen throughout the countryside and especially the coastal woods and valleys where I am currently based.” \nHallahan was the overall winner of the Hang Tough Contemporary Open Call Instagram Competition 2021. \nRuns until March 20 \nLaunch event tickets for Thursday March 3 here \nArtist talk with Cristín Leach on Tuesday March 8\, tickets here

SUMMARY:SHIT
DESCRIPTION:Kicking off THISISPOPBABY’s unmissable 15-Year Anniversary programme this March is the electrifying\, multi-award winning play SHIT by acclaimed playwright Patricia Cornelius\, for five performances only at Project Arts Centre. \nPicking up where they left off\, after having their planned opening night interrupted by a global pandemic lockdown in 2020\, the company restages SHIT for a full run this March. The play is a provocative and heart-breaking\, tragic and bitterly funny rollercoaster starring the outstanding Kate Stanley Brennan (Conversations After Sex)\, Aisling O’Mara (Redemption of a Rogue/Netflix) and Nicky Lewis (RIOT)\, and directed by THISISPOPBABY co-director Jennifer Jennings. \n \nCritically acclaimed as one of the best plays on Australian stages in recent years\, SHIT is about terrifying\, awful\, hilarious women. Angry\, nasty and out of control\, they’re everything women shouldn’t be\, and we hate them. Grown-up little girls who spit\, swear\, scream\, threaten\, piss in the street\, flash their tits and laugh too loudly. Who fight\, like\, really fight. Who fuck too much\, or not at all\, wear too much make up\, or none at all… and don’t believe in anything. They believe the world is shit\, that their lives are shit\, that they are shit. \nThis is a story about three of those women. Their names are Billy\, Bob and Sam. \nExactly 15 years since THISISPOPBABY came out of traps with Danny & Chantelle (Still Here)\, this new Irish production of SHIT is a compelling\, raw\, powerful and timely treatise on misogyny\, class and poverty. \n \nphotos: Simon Lazewski

SUMMARY:Vestige - Stephen Burke
DESCRIPTION:New work by Stephen Burke\, a multi-disciplinary artist and curator working between London and Dublin. \nBurke’s ambitions are to highlight a new visual understanding within our built environment\, focusing on elements of communication. He explores the cultural divide between street and gallery\, blurring the line between high and low art\, while offering a passion for the acts of creativity that happen within our everyday lives. Burke is interested in cities’ social fabric and how architecture attempts to bring order to these spaces. His practice makes visible and finds meaning in many inconspicuous components of large cities that would otherwise only marginally attract our attention. \n“Burke is interested in cities’ social fabric and how architecture attempts to bring order to these spaces” \nBurke produces photographic documentation of urban areas focusing on traces of antisocial behavior\, waste excess and utility elements. He photographs the residue from graffiti removal\, broken fencing\, sprayed construction markings and stained mosaics\, a type of urban decay voyeurism that can be linked with psychogeography. Using this ‘visual waste’ Burke builds his own painterly language. The resulting works are testimonials to the dialogue between those who mark public space and those who clean it\, reinforcing the idea of public space as a contested arena. \n \nViscous\, Spray paint\, emulsion and silicone on Aluminium 40 x 60cm \n \nCover Up Spray paint oil and emulsion on Aluminium 40 x 60cm \nThe use of steel\, tiles and street furniture within his work underscores the systems implemented through architecture and speaks of the cityscape’s materiality. These systems are juxtaposed through mark-making and staining\, using pollutants\, emulsion\, adhesives\, electrical sanders\, spray paints and various other manipulations; think accumulations of chewing gum\, scrubbed away graffiti and glazed layers of glue. The relationship of clean and unclean references the sociological tension between order and disorder while simultaneously implying degeneration and vandalism. These ideologies are reflected in our cities and their constant state of both construction and deconstruction. \nRuns until March 5.

SUMMARY:Old-School New York Graffiti Artist SMART RIS Opens Exhibition at New Dublin Gallery The Horse
DESCRIPTION:The latest addition to Dublin’s art scene The Horse is a new gallery and project space founded by artist Matthew Wilkinson.  Located at Bethesda Place\, Dublin 1\, this month sees the gallery presenting a new body of work by the prominent Italian\, Los Angeles-based\, graffiti artist SMART RIS. \nA member of the infamous New York Rockin’ It Suckers graffiti crew\, SMART RIS has been making work for over 30 years and has collaborated with some of the leading names on the scene including Chris Ellis ‘DAZE’\, Todd James ‘REAS’ and Stephen Powers ‘ESPO’. \n \nThe exhibition marks a departure for SMART RIS\, the artist has created a series of “drip” paintings made on location at the new Dublin gallery. Speaking about the exhibition\, gallery curator Matthew Wilkinson said that\, “The paintings are rooted in that childhood memory of the studio floor\, the compositions produced are investigations into the states that accompany the action surrounding a night of writing illegally. \n \nThe night sky\, the stars\, the lines that are produced by the spray can. The exhibition is a unique opportunity to see work by the artist in Ireland”. \n“The Drip” runs until March 17th at The Horse\, 3 Bethesda Place\, Dublin\, D01 EY29. \nFor more information visit: https://thehorsedublin.xyz/  \n@thehorsedublin

SUMMARY:Sail We Must - The Sea Story of Andrew Weatherall and an Irish fisherman
DESCRIPTION:In rural county Cork\, a lone fisherman met a weary traveller who was on his way to a gig. They soon began to exchange stories\, namely tales of the sea. During their conversation\, the seafarer shared a sentiment that would stay with his passenger forever: “fail we may\, sail we must.” \nThe Tenth Man presents Sail We Must directed by Grizzly\, a short film telling the beautiful story of the chance meeting between iconic artist Andrew Weatherall and fisherman Gerard Sheehy. The 10-minute film explores how the words of wisdom Sheehy shared with Weatherall changed his path and went on to influence another generation of musicians and creatives. The film also features Cian Ó Cíobháin who was instrumental in finding Gerard\, as well as Andrew’s close friend and collaborator Sean Johnston. \n“We can’t thank those closest to Andrew enough for allowing us to create this film\,” says Eric Davidson of The Tenth Man. “This is a celebration of club culture\, dance music\, and the cultural ties that bind us all together. But more importantly\, it’s a celebration of a once in a generation artist\, Andrew Weatherall.” \nSail We Must is screening February 16th in Dublin’s The Sugar Club\, featuring a live discussion between Cian Ó Cíobháin\, Johnny Moy\, and Billy Scurry about Andrew’s links to Ireland\, as well as a DJ set from Billy Scurry inspired by Andrew’s life. All proceeds from the evening will go to Andrew’s family and the charities that meant the most to him. \nFor those who can’t make the Dublin launch\, the film will be premiering live online on Mixmag on February 17th. \n@tenthmanhello \n@grizzly directors \nthetenthman.com \n \n

SUMMARY:Craig Taborn - Shadow Plays
DESCRIPTION:Innovative US pianist Craig Taborn returns to Ireland as part of his European tour of Shadow Plays. Craig is internationally acclaimed for his formidable career\, as a sideman\, co-leader and as a soloist on ECM records\, a label that has defined the high bar solo piano performance. He has long backed many of the most forward-thinking improvisers\, including James Carter\, Tim Berne\, Chris Potter and Dave Douglas.   \nA fearless improviser\, he has the reputation of “disappearing almost completely into his music” [New York Times]\, and is recognised as one of the best living jazz pianists. \nWith his latest ECM release\, “Shadow Plays”\, Taborn explores sounds and silences\, swirling colours\, densities and forms\, creating new music with both poetic imagination and an iron grip on his material. His control of his craft\, as he unerringly creates narratives and structures from the hint of a revealed pattern\, following where intuition and experience lead him\, is extraordinary.

SUMMARY:Electro-Fuse
DESCRIPTION:Internationally-renowned designers and NCAD alumni\, Aherne and Delany have worked together since 1998\, creating illustrative and typographic knitwear based on narrative storylines that draw on their own personal lives\, while simultaneously reflecting a wide range of social\, cultural and political moments. The Electro-Fuse exhibition captures an edit of graphic unisex knitwear\, including collaborations with a range of artists\, designers\, musicians and stylists. The exhibition also serves as the premiere of Electronic Sheep’s 2021/22 Electro-Fuse collection and this week sees the unveiling of a new artwork\, The Kilburn Tapestries\, which was funded by the Brent Borough of Culture London 2020. \nKilburn Tapestries\, 325cm x 135cm\, yarn 100% merino wool © 2021 Electronic Sheep @ NCAD Gallery.\nThe Electro-Fuse collection is populated with scenes from the eponymous Electronic Sheep comic – first created in 1998 – fusing a mix of the duo’s original stories with new tales\, reminiscing on nights out in familiar music venues across London\, Dublin and New York. Gig flyers\, fanzines\, posters and tickets that the pair have collected over the last 30 years are spliced together with their detailed drawings based on actual events. \nSpeaking about the exhibition\, Anne Kelly\, Curator\, NCAD Gallery said: “We’re thrilled to be showcasing the work of home-grown Irish label Electronic Sheep\, the creation of two fantastic NCAD alumni. We’re also very excited to be able to exhibit the work in person – the team at the Gallery deserves huge credit for the work they’ve done in creating a safe environment for people to visit the Gallery and see this striking collection. \n‘Mars Bar – 3.35AM\, 2ND AVENUE’ oversized triangle scarf. size 192cm x 75cm\, yarn 100 merino wool. © 2021 Electronic Sheep. SUMMARY:20 Years of Comics
DESCRIPTION:First presented at the Galway Cartoon Festival and now arriving here\, The Instituto Cervantes presents this exhibition of 40 works by 20 artists which celebrates the long-running Injuve Comics Awards and offers a whirlwind journey from the late ‘90s through the history of this artistic form of expression in Spain. “This is not just a lineal itinerary\, it transcends that; the exhibition establishes a dialogue between past and future using the relationship between the pieces\, showing the cartoonists’ evolution from the moment they received Injuve’s support until the present\, by focusing on the contrast between the young artist’s work and the more recent pieces for each exhibitor.” \nFeatured work by Álvaro Ortiz. \nUntil January 7. \n \n20 años de cómic Injuve\n  \n

SUMMARY:Asylum Archive: Vukašin Nedeljković
DESCRIPTION:Activist\, artist\, independent scholar and former asylum seeker Vukašin Nedeljković have their first RHA exhibition of elements from their multidisciplinary testimonial project Asylum Archive. Having studied Photography at Belgrade’s Academy of Arts\, and with a MA in Visual Arts from Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art Design and Technology\, Nedeljković has dedicated almost 14 years to creating their archive of “asylum”\, Direct Provision and Emergency Accommodation in Ireland\, providing an insight into the treatment of people who have come to Ireland to seek protection. \n \nConcerned with the reality of life for asylum seekers\, Asylum Archive’s objective is to collaborate with asylum seekers\, artists\, academics\, civil society activists and others\, to create an interactive\, documentary\, cross-platform\, online resource which critically foregrounds accounts of exile\, displacement\, trauma and memory. \nIn Nedeljković’s photographic testimony\, no bodies of asylum seekers are presented; instead\, they focus on the architecture of confinement\, traces\, remnants and ghosts. \n \nTheir latest work includes a focus on Emergency Accommodation Centres.  The exhibition also references the latest White Paper on Direct Provision\, and commemorates the unknown numbers of people who have died within the system. \nA second edition of Nedeljković’s book Asylum Archive featuring both photographs and essays\, is also being published\, and will be launched during the exhibition. \nNedeljković says of the forthcoming exhibition\, “The exhibition in RHA will offer an awareness of the inhumane Direct Provision and Emergency Accommodation dispersal system in Ireland. I know that the exhibition in RHA will attract new  and diverse audiences.” \nUntil December 19 \nOur 2019 feature on the project is here: \nAsylum Archive – Archives of Humanity

SUMMARY:Katherine Sankey - Hydrozomes: water bodies
DESCRIPTION:Katherine Sankey‘s sculpture uses living plant tissue and human supply lines to engage in the geo-feminist conversation about what we gouge and suck from the planet. Her practice examines mutation and the human extractive machine of supply and power in a multi-species context. Her artworks engage with how we as people adapt and colonize as well as inhabit territories. \nSankey’s sculpture is linear and combines arboreal elements\, plumbing\, electrics and video. Her practice seeks to challenge assumptions about both the boundaries of the human and what constitutes a ‘natural’ object or environment. In its uncanny representations of embodiment and parasitic invasion of a host space\, Sankey’s sculpture holds a grimy\, distorted mirror to ‘the real’. \n“Katherine Sankey‘s sculpture uses living plant tissue and human supply lines to engage in the geo-feminist conversation about what we gouge and suck from the planet.” \nHydrozomes is a collection of artworks from the last 3 years shown for the first time\, or in new configurations. As you enter\, Sankey’s sculptural grammar connects the invisible linear apparatus of water and energy conduction surrounding us in our built environments\, with the living organisms of wood\, lichen and crustacean parts. \n \nThen there is Hydrozomes\, a sprawling installation incorporating ‘studies’ of hybrid mineral bodies as organic architectures. Here we encounter Sankey’s studio practice ‘mid-process’; a rogue hydroponics of sorts\, inhabiting the experimental nature of the Artist-Initiated Projects. \n‘Sankey’s work asks important questions about how we connect to the unseen and to the mechanisms that we take for granted in the small\, routine moments of our lives. Her sculpture gestures to the delicate balance of our ecosystems (in the strict sense of the word but also our own personal systems\, both constructed and natural). Her practice also alludes to the sometimes awkward or precarious quality of these systems\, brought to the fore in the manner that artworks are made\, balanced and suspended. (…) I am drawn to the ways that these artworks allude to time\, in that their energies and flow are open in terms of direction\, again representing a crucial focus on process\, rather than on a cohesive beginning or end.’ — Julie Morrissy\, excerpt from File Note lV\, a Fire Station Artists’ Studios publication\, 2021. \nOpening reception: 6–8pm Thursday 11th November \nExhibition continues: Friday 12th November – Saturday 27th November \nGallery open: 12–6pm\, Thursday–Saturday

SUMMARY:New Now Next: Lacaton & Vassal
DESCRIPTION:The Irish Architecture Foundation’s final New Now Next live virtual talk of 2021  brings together four of the world’s most acclaimed and forward-thinking architects to discuss their work and pressing architectural issues of our time. \nThroughout their careers\, Lacaton & Vassal have pioneered alternatives to city plans that call for the demolition of social housing. Instead\, they offer a strategy that saves the building while prioritising the needs of the inhabitants\, the environment\, and the wider community. The Paris-based duo Anne Lacaton and Jean-Phillipe Vassal were recipients of the 2021 Pritzker Prize and key projects of theirs include the renovation of a 1960s housing block in Bordeaux (530 Dwellings at Grand Parc); the adaptive reuse of a former shipyard in Dunkirk to create the FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais art gallery; and the overhaul of the Palais de Tokyo Museum in Paris. \n \n\n\n\nNathalie Weadick\, Director of the Irish Architecture Foundation says: \n“This is timely! Here in Ireland\, when buildings go out of commission\, we automatically chose removal and replacement\, without a second thought about the impact demolition has on climate change. At a critical juncture of net zero targets\, I urge you to listen to Anne Lacaton and Phillippe Vassal about the value of retention and reuse. You will be inspired to do change the discourse.” \n\n\n\nA discussion and Q&A after their presentation will be moderated  by Shelley McNamara and Yvonne Farrell from Grafton Architects. These local legends recently  won the 2021 Riba Stirling Prize for Kingston University’s free-flowing Town House\, were the 2020 laureates of the Pritzker Architecture and curators of the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2018. They even graced the cover of our issue back in January 2018 which we hear they still cite as the greatest thrill of all 🙂

SUMMARY:Sanctum
DESCRIPTION:Peter Gordon’s new exhibition stems from spending much of the various lockdown months on the South Wall or walking on the adjacent sand as the tide dropped\, trying to create a new and unique collection of images. Something that reflected the calm that the escape brought. Sunrise after sunrise the wall was deserted bar some brave winter swimmers and the occasional photographer. \n“I wanted to experience the tide in every position\, the sun from every direction. The full plethora of emotions and moods. Being there on my own. On the concrete or on the sand\, in the salt. Always feeling the serenity.” \nRuns until November 27\, open daily: 10am-6pm\, Sunday: 11am-4pm \nBreakthrough\, Poolbeg LighthouseThe dawn held little promise but as sunrise approached the sun popped out over the horizon and lit the distant lighthouse. SUMMARY:Exhibition: Collide - Aoife Scott
DESCRIPTION:Aoife Scott has interrogated her love for and connection to the sea and the natural world\, and has juxtaposed this sensibility with the anxiety she feels as she observes the devastating impact that we as a society have made on our environment. \n‘Through my practice I communicate feelings of calm and excitement with more worrying feelings of anxiety and frustration as I seek to find a balance between the natural and the man-made world’\, says Aoife of her work. \n \n“I am intrigued by the push and the pull between the two and strive to explore the relationship between them using different natural and manmade materials. I hope that the colourful energy of the work draws in the viewer and that the contrasting textures\, soft\, overlapping floating shapes juxtaposed with the bold lines create a tension and friction which expresses my concerns about the print and mark that we are leaving on our planet’.” \nRuns Nov 18 -21.

SUMMARY:Honey Dijon
DESCRIPTION:Honey Dijon was born and raised in Chicago the home of house music\, but has been living in NYC for many years. Like many involved in the scene\, her love affair with music began upon hearing her parent’s soul and r&b records at home. Soon she wanted to be the one dropping the needle on the record whenever they held parties in the family basement and the lure of club life soon followed. Before long she was obsessively collecting her own music from hallowed stores like Imports Etc and Gramaphone in Chicago\, all the while honing her own personal style. \n \nIt was while hanging out in these stores where Honey met and formed a long lasting friendship with Derrick Carter\, who became a mentor. It was he who introduced her to the underground of Chicago where she was exposed to the sounds of jacking house and Detroit techno. After relocating to New York City\, Honey also met another music giant Danny Tenaglia\, whose legendary sets at Twilo were also a major source of inspiration. “Danny heavily influenced my sound as a DJ\,’ says Honey. “The drama of his delivery and risk taking always informed me of how I wanted to present music. Of course\, Derrick and Chicago house were also very influential in my development as an artist\, so it’s this combination of Chicago and New York that has helped me develop my signature sound.” \nStill preferring vinyl as a format\, there is something hugely authentic about the way Honey mixes\, fusing the bump of Chicago with more classic New York sounds and other European influences. Her sets are known for their strong programming\, passion and integrity. The art of the mix itself is also very important to Honey as anyone who has witnessed her play can testify about her deft mixing skills and the way she dexterously flows between house or techno with a warm\, hypnotic feel. She has played at many of the best venues around the world including esteemed underground haunts like Panorama Bar/berlin\, Sub Club/glasgow\, The Block/tel aviv\, Output/nyc\, Space/ibiza and of course Smart Bar/chicago. \n \nIn the studio\, Honey brings her unique perspective and experience to her productions as well. Of course heritage sounds are at the rock bed of what she does\, but far from churning out throwback sounds\, she makes sure new ideas are at the forefront. For evidence of this look no further than her releases and remixes on Classic Records. In fact this cultural star recently mixed a retrospective compilation for the legendary Classic Music label as well being commissioned to create the soundtrack for a recent Louis Vuitton Menswear shows. \nWith her charisma\,style and broad understanding of electronic music and upcoming gigs in Los Angeles\, Chicago\, Toronto\, Amsterdam\, Germany\, Spain\, and Paris to name a few there seems to be no stopping Miss Dijon.

SUMMARY:Christine Tobin and Friends - Tower of Song
DESCRIPTION:Renowned for her kaleidoscopic musical palette\, she can be a junkyard blues philosopher\, snappy beat seductress\, a conduit for exquisite zen-like harmonies or reflective Americana. Dublin native Christine has been an integral part of both the New York City and London scenes for many years\, has recently returned to Ireland and now resides in Roscommon. \nHer authentic sound was described by The Guardian as “Tobin’s 24 carat voice” while praising her both for the poetry of her compositions and the warmth of her golden voice. Her style\, although rooted in jazz\, is eclectic and draws on a broad range of influences. MOJO Music Magazine said of her “Christine Tobin really transcends glib genre-fication. Her expressive range acknowledges finely acquired folk\, jazz and 20th-century classical influences\, which already sets her apart. And everything is shot through with an unmistakable refinement\, free-spirited earthiness and giddy romanticism\, this singer-songwriter is in a field of one.” \nThe Christine Tobin and friends ensemble comprises; \nChristine Tobin – vocals\nPhil Robson – guitar\nConor Murray – bass\nDavid Lyttle – drums \nphoto: Des McMahon

SUMMARY:Fidelio
DESCRIPTION:The first performance of Fidelio\, Beethoven’s only opera\, took place in the Theatre Royal in December 1838. It also marks the first live production by Irish National Opera since May 2019. The giddy thrill of being in public\, having an occasion to go to and witnessing the the edge and energy of performers\, set changes and orchestras being conducted in the pit is a welcome sight. Written in the first decade of the 19th century\, Beethoven was influenced by a story from the French Revolution concerning a woman who dressed as a man to rescue her husband from imprisonment. “Today freedom is as important and relevant a concept as it was then\,” writes director Annabelle Comyn. “In recent years with the rise of the right\, populism\, and authoritarianism\, Beethoven’s opera has never felt so urgent.” \nSet in a state prison\, the opening scene sees Rocco (Daniel Sumegi\, bass-baritone)\, the prison warden\, preparing for his day in a Francis O’Connor’s set which evokes communist Germany in its spartan\, minimalism – a look which has found favour in chic design aesthetics these days\, also. He has a daughter\, Marzelline (Kelli Ann-Masterson\, soprano)\, and an assistant\, Jaquino (Dean Power\, tenor)\, who is in love with Marzelline. “He acts from a state of fear: at times with compassion\, at times lured by promises of personal gain\,” says Comyn. Leonore (Sinéad Campbell Wallace\, soprano)\, our heroine\, is the wife of the imprisoned Florestan (Robert Murray\, tenor) but disguised as Fidelio in order to breach the system and be with her love. Yet\, they have to overcome the baddie Don Pizarro (Brian Mulligan\, baritone)\, who is chief governor of the joint. If that sounds in any way confusing\, trust us it’s not and with the aid of surtitles you will slip into the action and emotion with ease. \n \nThere’s unrequited love\, marriage proposals\, prisoners seeing tantalising daylight and murderous intentions – it’s opera baby! And it’s fun even when we get to see opera singers wobbling on the acting tightrope\, on occasion. There’s strong central performances with Florestan\, in particular\, delivering a powerfully convincing performance of the doomed inmate. Fergus Shiel waves the wand and notes that\, “for Beethoven a lot of it (the music) is about rhythms and motifs and small snatches of things that are repeated and repeated and it’s like architecture\, the way he uses these blocks of music.” \nGet back in the room\, it’s been too long\, and enjoy a night at the opera. \nPerformances Wednesday\, Friday and Saturday November 10\,12 and 13 at 7.30pm.
