SUMMARY:Catherine Greene - Conspiracy
DESCRIPTION:This solo exhibition of new sculptures will feature 15 jesmonite heads depicting two elements coming together – the raven and the human. “The raven pieces should not be viewed as raven overwhelming the human form\,” says sculptor Catherine Greene. “They could be construed as symbiosis of man and animal or it can be read as man elevating himself above his quotient existence. Ravens are harbingers of knowledge\, of death\, of transformation. They are portals into another place. My idea was to make work that suggests a blend and coming together of human with bird where it becomes impossible to disconnect the two entities. Many of the works are titled Conspiracy because that is the term for a group of ravens.”  \nRuns until May 27\, closed on Saturday and Sunday.

SUMMARY:Warpaint
DESCRIPTION:Warpaint are back with a new studio album this month. And the first slices\, especially Champion\, from Radiate Like This point to promising things from their dreamy shoegazer indie pop with an edge. The LA four-piece\, who will 20 years in existence next year\, remain perpetually plugged in\, even in the six years since Heads Up. DIY Mag informs us that\, “Drummer Stella Mozgawa has racked up a slew of session credits with The xx\, Sharon Van Etten\, Tracey Thorn and more; bassist-singer Jenny Lee Lindberg has worked with Deap Vally and appeared on Phoebe Bridgers’ Punisher\, while singer-guitarist Emily Kokal has collaborated with Saul Williams and started a family. As for Theresa (Wayman)\, well\, she’s put out a solo album (2018’s LoveLaws)\, launched an underwear line\, and been confirmed to star in the forthcoming film adaptation of Kenneth J. Harvey’s novel\, Inside.” So\, if you do end up chatting to them after the gig just don’t question what they’ve been up to!

SUMMARY:An Octoroon
DESCRIPTION:Irish playwright\, Dion Boucicault’s wrote The Octoroon in 1859. Adapting Thomas Mayne Reid‘s 1856 novel about the residents of a Louisiana plantation\, it sparked debates about the abolition of slavery and the role of theatre in politics. In 2014\, playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins gave it a subversive contemporary reboot\, fashioning what the New York Times called “the most eloquent statement on race in America today.” This whipsmart production of An Octoroon is laced with humour and razor-sharp commentary on race and society\, ably anchored by some stellar cast performances. It is the sort 0f boat pushing programming we’ve been hankering for from our national theatre for some time. \nuntil May 14 with 2pm matinees on Saturday

SUMMARY:Squid
DESCRIPTION:Purveyors of post-punk and Brightonites to boot\, Squid may sound like a band who has been around forever\, but they are mere early hurdlers with their debut album Bright Green Field in their arsenal since 2021. Their two-night stint illustrates growing clout and their blend of sci-fi paranoia on a rinse cycle with our contemporary lot seems like the perfect reason to let rip. SUMMARY:John Francis Flynn
DESCRIPTION:“Flynn’s arresting debut shines for its ingenuity and unfettered invention as droning tape manipulations\, gurgling analogue synth passages and jazz squeals shine in conversation with traditional songs\, arrangements and approaches. For all the instrumental mastery on display\, Flynn’s rich vocals stand apart\, the deeply felt empathy in his delivery lending the songs their own kind of gentle authority. Mesmerising.” Thus wrote Danny Wilson from this parish when Francis Flynn released his debut I Would Not Live Always last year. SUMMARY:Postcards in Between - Maria Kelly & Minding Creative Minds
DESCRIPTION:Well-known folk artist Maria Kelly joins forces with Minding Creative Minds for Postcards In Between\, a brilliant exhibition and panel talk focusing on mental health and creativity taking place at Universal Space on Capel Street\, Dublin 1 this weekend. \nThe ‘Postcards In-between‘ project initially started with Maria Kelly asking her fellow Irish songwriters to pen a ‘note-to-self’ letter to a version of themselves that they thought might need a helping hand. The letters became 12 postcards – each one linking to a track on her 2021 debut album\, The Sum of the In-between. The project features Abbacaxi\, Ciaran Lavery\, James Vincent McMorrow\, Paul Noonan\, Rosie Carney\, Runah\, Saint Sister\, Sammy Copely\, Shiv\, Sive and Tim Chadwick. \n\nDesigned by Irish-French illustrators Pipe & Pallet (Nathanaël Roman) and Cécilia Noiraud\, these postcards will be exhibited in various forms at a free pop-up exhibition taking place at Universal Space\, Dublin on Saturday 30th April and Sunday 1st May. The exhibition is being run in association with Minding Creative Minds\, Ireland’s first 24/7 (32 county and our Irish overseas) well-being support programme for the entire Irish creative sector.\n\nIn conjunction with the exhibition\, Maria Kelly will present an evening of discussion\, music and art centered around cultivating self-compassion\, in association with Minding Creative Minds. Musicians Tim Chadwick and Sammy Copley  and visual artist Cécilia Noiraud will join Maria Kelly in a panel discussion on Saturday 30th April\, at 7pm\, hosted by psychotherapist and author\, Siobhan Murray. \nThe conversation is set to explore the idea of self-compassion\, particularly in the lives of Irish creatives\, the interplay between mental health and creative careers\, and the avenues of support available as a creative community and from dedicated mental health services. \n \nIn outlining the background to the project\, Maria Kelly tells us that ‘Postcards In-between’ aims to highlight how powerful it can be to practice self-compassion. “I’ve struggled with my mental health for years\, but in 2019\, I went through a crisis. There were many things that made that recovery an uphill battle\, but I know something that kept me going was a quiet voice that knew I didn’t deserve what I was experiencing; the voice that knew there was a version of me somewhere that got through it. \n“‘Postcards In-between’ aims to bring that voice to the forefront\, and I’m very grateful that these eleven artists have been so vulnerable with their offerings. There is so much compassion\, strength\, and wisdom in their letters\, and I think you’ll find something in them for yourselves.” \nIn response to the question\, “why postcards?”\,  Kelly adds\, “I love the idea of connecting with someone in such a short message – there’s only so much you can fit\, so you just have to say the important stuff.”\n\nPostcards In-between\, a free pop-up exhibition\, takes place at Universal Space\, Dublin on Saturday 30th April and Sunday 1st May. The panel discussion features Saturday 30th April\, at 7pm. Tickets Available Here \n\n\nFor more details about Maria Kelly\, and her upcoming tour dates visit mariakellymusic.co

SUMMARY:I Could Be Anything I Want: An Evening Celebrating SOPHIE
DESCRIPTION:SOPHIE blazed briefly\, but ever so brightly. The pioneering transgender Scottish avant-pop record producer\, singer\, and DJ became known for her ‘radical futurism’ best exemplified in her debut album Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides. Tragically\, SOPHIE died in Athens last year. SUMMARY:Mirza Cizmic - Memories of the Loud Silence
DESCRIPTION:Mirza Cizmic is the ‘Open Call’ winner from Hang Tough’s shout out last year and what a worthy winner. His collection of oil paintings are everything and then some. He states his practice is related to “past experiences” and what a glorious rabbit hole of experience he brings us through. Bonkers\, dark\, humourous\, questioning\, distorted\, domestic…his compositions are inspired by old master painters but are brought into a contemporary context with layered\, collage style presentation. This is topsy-turvy ‘did you spot that?’ assertive art of the finest kind. We are eagerly awaiting some sort of Salvatore of Lucan vs Mirza Cizmic art smackdown. \nuntil May 1

SUMMARY:Live Collision
DESCRIPTION:Lynnette Moran’s Live Collision regroups\, reconsiders and asks us to buckle up for a smörgåsbord of live art practice. A few hand picks from the brimming selection include\, Object Permanence by Kat Hawkins which is a solo dance which takes us intimately into the relationship between the disabled body and assistive devices\, revealing a world of joy\, companionship and sensuality. Brokentalkers return with The Examination\, exploring mental health and human rights in the prison system. Irish Trinidadian artist Maïa Nunes presents Solas\, integrating original sound design and musical composition\, with live instrumentation and vocal improvisation. While artists and lovers Rosana Cade and Ivor MacAskill bring The Making of Pinocchio\, a response to Ivor’s gender transition. In this theatrical and cinematic spectacular\, their tender and complex autobiographical experience meets the magical story of the little lying puppet who wants to be a ‘real boy’. \nHouse of Origin (lead photo) is a new video project\, recorded interviews with some of the icons of Ballroom culture\, voicenotes responses submitted by our queer Black community here in Ireland and written research gathered and written for this. It presents new possibilities for Black queer community building and gender euphoria in an Irish context. \nProject Arts Centre\, Wednesday April 27 to Saturday April 30 \n \n

SUMMARY:Music Current
DESCRIPTION:Ireland’s most ambitious and adventurous contemporary music festival Music Current returns from its Covid slumber and moves into a brand new home at Project Arts Centre for 2022. With many new concerts over 5 days\, as well as participation workshops and panel discussions\, this year’s concerts showcase some of the most adventurous groups in Irish and international contemporary and electronic music today\, many performing in Ireland for the very first time\, at this unique event which runs from 19 – 23 April. \nShowcasing some of the most fearless innovators in contemporary music today; hosting 5 new concerts\, 2 new free participation workshops for audiences\, musicians and composers; a lecture recital on ‘music stretching’ by Maya Homburger and Barry Guy; and a shared masterclass with eight composers\, led by renowned composer Natacha Diels\, over 5 days\, and with a brilliant new commission opportunity for 2023. \nMusic Current has a reputation for presenting music that is at once both fun and challenging\, and this year the programme is entirely made up of Irish and world premieres\, and sees many contemporary music artists converge again in a live setting\, from Ireland and abroad\, for the first time in two years. The festival is a showcase of the “newest of the new” music from Ireland and worldwide. \nA central feature of Music Current Festival is the creative collaboration of composers and performers with the presentation of new works\, and Music Current regularly commissions new compositions and creates opportunities for collaborative development. \nMusic Current’s Thursday (21 Apr) concert features New York music chamber group LOADBANG\, who will perform a programme called IRRATIONAL\, which showcases the breadth of their creative work in the past decade. Ranging from off-kilter grooves to apocalyptic soundscapes\, the programme features works by some of their favourite collaborators including Eve Beglarian\, Taylor Brook\, Chaya Czernowin\, George Lewis\, Alex Mincek\, and Angélica Negrón as well as a world premiere by Irish composer Fergal Dowling. \nLoadbang have been described as\, “inventive” – New York Times\, “an extra-cool new music group\, exhilarating..” – Baltimore Sun\, and “a formidable new-music force..” – Time Out\, New York \n \nThe group relish in a new kind of music for mixed ensemble of trumpet\, trombone\, bass clarinet\, and baritone voice. Their unique lung-powered instrumentation has provoked diverse responses from composers\, resulting in a repertoire comprising an inclusive picture of composition today. They have premiered more than 400 works\, written by members of the ensemble\, emerging artists\, and today’s leading composers. Their repertoire includes works by Pulitzer Prize winners David Lang and Charles Wuorinen; Rome Prize winners Andy Akiho and Paula Matthusen; and Guggenheim Fellows Chaya Czernowin\, George Lewis\, and Alex Mincek. \nFriday’s (22 Apr) concert brings us Maya Homburger and Barry Guy who join forces to present a programme called DUO\, combining new compositions\, masterful improvisations and Baroque masterpieces. Barry Guy is renowned as one of the most virtuosic and imaginative improvisers and Maya Homburger’s interpretations of solo violin sonatas are inspired by the duo’s freedom and creativity.  \nIn this programme for Music Current 2022\, they feature works by H.I.F. Biber\, J.S. Bach\, György Kurtág and Barry\, the Homburger/Guy Duo creates a conduit through which music from the 17th century and earlier can flow effortlessly into contemporary compositions and improvisations.  \n \nThis performance will take place within a special loudspeaker system designed originally by a Stanford University team of Professor Jonathan Abel\, Dr Eoin Callery\, and Dr Elliot Canfield-Dafilou\, which immerses both the audience and the performers in virtual acoustic spaces. This system imposes a new alternative acoustic on the performance space and can render a transparent and realistic sensation of listening (or performing) within entirely different spaces\, such as: historic buildings\, natural spaces or even synthetic spaces. This new sound technology continues to be developed at Stanford University and at the Irish World Academy of Music And Dance in the University of Limerick. \nThe concert will be preceded by a lecture-recital on the Duo’s concept of “musical stretching”\, and will give insight into their approach and creativity\, highlighting some of the extended techniques on bass and violin with which they create unique sound worlds. \nMusic Current’s closing concert of the 2022 festival (Sat 23 Apr)\, Invisible Hand\, welcomes German band Ensemble Garage to Ireland for the first time. They will present a true multimedia concert of works combining choreographed movement\, video\, instrumental practice and cynical play to create a uniquely curious and disconcerting performance. \nEnsemble Garage’s programmes are at once playful and politically engaged. This concert mixes dark comedy with the absurdity of life\, love and politics. While maintaining a foothold in the abstract\, their work is conceived as an attempt to reveal the connection between art and the experience of life.

DESCRIPTION:We either have you at the line “a British-German dark wave duo formed in 2010” or we’ve lost you. For those on sentence two\, stick with! Lebanon Hanover are damn good. If you listen to a track like Alien\, you’ll hear guitar riffs which will fire up The Cure/Depeche Mode synapses. And voices which call to mind Anika and Marc Almond. Ellen Allien has been remixing them too\, of late. This is a band for Cold War spies\, shady laneways and snowflakes which crystallise. Come in from the cold and embrace them. \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Dubliners: Mario Sughi
DESCRIPTION:An artist and a writer put the city where they live\, walk and love at the centre of their work. Their gaze is attracted\, more than by the places\, by the people who pass through it every day. They are intrigued by the stories that are hidden behind that multitude of faces\, ordinary and at the same time unique stories that deserve to be imagined and then told. (…) \nThe juxtapositions between writing and image work by analogies\, sometimes obvious\, other times barely perceptible\, in an intense dialogue that plays on the contrast between the density of the text and the essentiality of the tableaux. The real common denominator of this process is the city of Dublin\, always present even if in the background\, with its atmosphere\, its colours and above all its sea. But what remains after immersing oneself in the creative universes of these two artists\, and their original approach to being together and talking to each other\, is the overall emotion of the lives of others\, which we always look at from afar\, but which in the end\, tell us about ourselves. \n \nMARIO SUGHI (nerosunero) is an Italian painter and illustrator based in Dublin. He participated in the 54th Venice Biennale\, the Italian Pavilion in the World\, at the Italian Institute of Culture (Dublin 2011) and his work has been selected for nine of the recent RHA Annual Exhibition (Dublin 2012–2021). \n\n\n\nMIA GALLAGHER is based in Dublin. She writes novels\, stories and non-fiction and has devised\, written and performed for the stage and a contributing editor of the Irish literary journal The Stinging Fly. \nUntil April 10 \n

SUMMARY:Aches - Division
DESCRIPTION:This new body of work features eighteen original pieces\, encompassing unique mediums such as wood\, glass and canvas. Throughout ‘Division’\, Aches has masterfully craed a cohesive and unique visual through-line\, by using a dynamic and consistent colour theory. This continual thread aesthetically unites the different mediums to form an electrifying collection that is definitely not to be missed. As part of the exhibition\, there will also be an exclusive fine-art print release. \n \nʻDivisionʼ is Aches’ bold\, confronting artistic response to the events of the past two years. The body of work speaks to the division and isolation of people\, where previously solid and established social circles began to splinter due to enforced separation. Layers of vibrant colour are strictly separated and overlapped to represent the fragmentation and division in society – executed in Aches’ distinctive style – and speak specifically to feelings of anxiety\, loneliness\, and disillusionment. \n\nUntil April 10

SUMMARY:Abomination: A DUP Opera
DESCRIPTION:Conor Mitchell’s crafts a sublime retort to the DUP’s shameful homophobia by turning the words back on them. \nRevolutionary in form\, Abomination centres on the scandalous live radio interview given by NI Politician Iris Robinson\, when she referred to homosexuality as an ‘abomination’ – an act that has gone down in Irish queer history and instantly re-ignited the Northern Irish equality debate. \nWith their unique high-impact\, multi-disciplinary style\, the Belfast Ensemble wrap this story in a fresh web of incendiary historical comments by DUP members on the subject of gay rights\, marriage equality\, ‘poofs’ and ‘perverts’ to shockingly theatrical effect – challenging the power of words in the hands of the powerful. \nContemporary\, political\, comic\, and emotionally complex\, this riotous Northern Irish original redefined what a 21st-century opera could say\, and why… and with just a touch of drag! \nEnds Saturday April 2 with matinee at 2pm that day also.

SUMMARY:Surrounded by Sea
DESCRIPTION:This photography exhibition is conceived by Irish artists Karen Cowley (Wyvern Lingo) and photographer Ruth Medjber\, in aid of Refugee Rescue. An open entry call went out last month inviting submissions based around the conception of the sea and what it means to our island nation. A few pals such as Hozier have been enlisted to offer their vistas also. “The sea gives me the feeling of familiarity that I can tap into anywhere in the world. I use it to soothe my anxious mind when I travel. I let the sound wash over my noisy thoughts and drown out the sounds of a blustering world and re-center me with its infinite rhythm. I focus my eyes on the horizon and blissfully zone out. It’s meditation\, nostalgia\, comfort and peace. The sea is my home from home\,” says Medjber. \nThe Dean Art Space\, Harcourt Street\, Friday April 1 to Sunday April 3. \nrefugeerescue.org

SUMMARY:Dead Present - Salvatore of Lucan
DESCRIPTION:‘Hello\, I’m Salvatore of Lucan and I am 28 years old now. ‘Dead Present’ is a show which starts on the left with me in work and goes right across to me as a blemmyae. There’s me in the pub too and then me eating a takeaway afterwards. Then me dead under a pot of flowers and also a still life of some dead flowers. After that there’s a family portrait before the painting of the blemmyae. The show takes its name from the painting of the dead flowers as they were a gift and are now dead. You may notice I am dead present in the work too. There is a stained glass window of me getting sick and that’s it. Questions you may not ask me include\, Why do you paint yourself all the time? and Where are you from?’ \nRecent solo exhibitions include Melodrama\, Hang Tough Contemporary (2021)\, Show of Himself\, Pallas Projects (2018). Recent selected group shows include Dubliners\, Pallas Projects\, 6th Biennial of Painting\, Zagreb (2021)\, Silver\, Kevin Kavanagh (2019)\, Agnes and I\, The Library Project (2019)\, Island Life\, Kevin Kavanagh and The Custom House\, Westport (2018). Salvatore of Lucan was awarded the Zurich Portrait prize in 2021 for his painting Me Ma Healing Me. He was also awarded the Whyte’s Award\, nominated for Hennessy Craig Award in the RHA\, appeared in RTE’s ‘Exhibitionists’ documentary and has received the Arts Council’s Next Generation Award. \nRuns until April 23

SUMMARY:Mutualisms - Peter Smyth
DESCRIPTION:‘Mutualisms’\, Peter Smyth’s debut solo show\, is inspired by the often unseen and abstract operations within plant ecology. \nIn his work\, Peter considers the parallels between the natural occurrences of plant ecology\, and that of his painting process – specifically\, the painting’s relationship to the digital processes that are used to create them. \nAs part of his process\, Peter uses computer generated renders as creative stimulus\, and translates them into original painted works. 3D models are drawn from facets of plant ecology\, above and below ground. \n“Mutualism is usually defined as an interaction between individuals of different species which result in beneficial effects. To me\, the painting is entangled in a mutualistic relationship with the digital medium.” \nWhat we see exhibited are a collection of colourful\, abstract paintings – no digital pieces. Similar in theory to plant life\, where we often see what is above the ground\, not the processes underneath that initiate the growth. \n \nImages from Peter’s Studio (taken by Johnny Mallin) \nThe exhibition continues until Saturday 2 April\, opening Wed-Sat\, 10am-4pm each week\, no booking required. \nAll exhibited artworks will be available to buy online at www.ateliernow.ie once the exhibition opens.  \n \n

SUMMARY:Curtis Harding
DESCRIPTION:Nothing like a bit of soul for the soul and\, if that’s your bag then\, Harding is your man. The Atlanta-based artist croons with tremulous ardour on his third solo effort If Words Were Flowers. Like Leon Bridges\, Harding pickles the past and nods to the present. The title is a tribute of sorts to a phrase that his mother told him when he was a child – ”Give me my flowers while I’m still here.” You’ll hear echoes of everyone from Sly Stone to Curtis Mayfield to Gil Scott-Heron. “Music immortalizes you\,” says Harding\, “So if this is the last thing I’m going to say to someone\, it’s going to be some hopeful shit.”

SUMMARY:Deck - A Collection of Found Playing Cards: Claire Halpin
DESCRIPTION:Stemming from the artist’s habit picking up playing cards she has found over many years\, Deck is a snapshot in time and place of a collection largely amassed on the streets of Dublin 1.  Making her own rules however\, the collection spans continents. Every card has a back story\, real and imagined. In different states of repair and decay\, the cards are annotated with whatever biro or marker was closest to hand with where and when each one was found before being added to the chart cataloguing and mapping the collection in an attempt to complete a full deck. How can so many cards have been mislaid? Were they up someone’s sleeve? Thrown away in a losing streak? Did they simply blow away? Each card represents a redundant pack from whence they came. \n“Every card has a back story\, real and imagined. In different states of repair and decay\, the cards are annotated with whatever biro or marker was closest to hand with where and when each one was found before being added to the chart cataloguing and mapping the collection in an attempt to complete a full deck.” \nIn 17 years working in the area I’m not sure I’ve seen anyone playing cards on the street.  In Claire’s short commute from her home in Summerhill to her studio in Talbot Street\, finding cards and adding them to her collection\, became almost ritualistic. For this exhibition Claire has chosen not only to fill the windows of the Cube space at the LAB with these cards but also invites audiences to listen to the stories she’s collected of varying “house rules” for old favourites and games previously unknown to her. The very act of installing the show in the window has led to heated debates about rules with passers by\, some of whom were subsequently recorded at the card table in the exhibition. \nClaire Halpin’s work explores themes and concepts around contested territories and histories through painting\, video and installation. Recently acquired by IMMA\, a common concern across her work is an interest in perception and interpretation of images.  Her work raises questions about how we choose to record history and the veracity of painting\, photography\, and the media in documenting future history. \nThis exhibition captures the artist’s personal experience on her daily journey to make the paintings for which she is best known while drawing on her fascination with cultural exchange\, storytelling and social fabric.
