DESCRIPTION:Mike Bunn turned 80 this year so it’s as good a time as ever to have a retrospective of his photography career. 130 photographs from his portfolio are on display as one delves into his work spanning fashion\, portraiture and nature as documented in our In The Frame section last month. \nBunn told Deirdre McQuillan in the Irish Times how\, “I was a good looking teddy boy from London in a double breasted knee length coat made by a tailor\, black silk scarf\, pinstripe trousers and velvet boots\,” when he was hanging around Dublin in the ‘80s. “I used to go to the Bailey with a green flower in my lapel and drink Crème de Menthe Frappé \, You couldn’t miss me.” \nMike Bunn: The Man Who Sees Through Shadows runs at Farmleigh Gallery until March 19. 10am – 5pm\, Tuesday to Sunday. \nRead more

DESCRIPTION:Handmade artisan rugmakers Ceadogán are set to launch “Island”\, an exciting new project which brings together a dozen of Ireland’s finest artists\, each of whom will be drawing on their individual designs and interpretations to create a unique one-off rug or wall hanging piece. The unique collection of stunning one-off handmade rugs will go on public display at the Hang Tough Contemporary gallery on Exchequer Street\, Dublin from January 26th. \nThis innovative project includes pieces from some of Ireland’s leading artists\, including Gottfried Helnwein\, Dorothy Cross\, Sean Scully\, Maser\, Domino Whisker\, Gilbert Menassa\, Hannah Ní Mhaonaigh\, Mary O’Connor\, Colm Mac Athlaoich\, Sean Atmos\, Lola Donoghue and Alice Fitzgerald. \nFollowing the exhibition\, each piece will be auctioned off\, with 50% of profits from the sale being donated to Peter McVerry Trust for homelessness. The remainder will go towards supporting a regenerative wildlife project at the site of Ceadogán studios on Bannow Bay\, Co. SUMMARY:'Why be an artist?' (after Leigh Hobba and Noel Sheridan)
DESCRIPTION:It is utterly apt to have this all consuming question planted before the next generation of aspiring artists whilst paying homage to the late director of NCAD\, Noel Sheridan. His performance work filmed by Hobba in ’94 explored the reasons to pursue this path\, stating “if you do art as a second choice it will show in the work” and “you must be oppositional to any manifestations of the superstructure” and while you must do bargains with all of these\, meeting their agendas will never benefit your work. \nHere Oísín Byrne and Vaari Claffey revisit the framework with practising visual artists invited to respond to Sheridan’s provocations. The acclaimed French photographer has captured the rock icon many times over his long career\, since first shooting Bowie in 1972\, with many of his images  now deemed classic portrayals. \nAs an official chronicler of Bowie\, Auliac had premium stage-side access to many of Bowie’s most iconic shows\, so this is a great opportunity to get some insights into some of his magical stage performances. The third annual ‘Merchy Christmas’ artists market\, presented by One Stop Band Shop\, is a chance for fan payback to show gratitude\, thank them for the music and put some coals in their fire for the year ahead. DESCRIPTION:The Fumbally Cafe is the place to be on December 16th\, where a stunning lineup get together for Past The End\, a musical fundraiser for Women’s Aid. The organisers tell us that the name is a nod to The End is Nigh\, an epic night in 2012\, when singer Lisa Hannigan and others played to a sweet Christmas gang to mark the end of the Mayan Calendar and of all existence. (Editor’s note –  some of us are still here.) \nPerformers on the night include Brian Mooney’s band The Next New Low\, featuring Sean Coleman\, Daniel Luke Smith\, and James Smith. There will also be a trio performance with Mary Barnecutt\, Sean Mac Erlaine and Mathew Nolan\, while singer songwriter Laura Ann Brady will be conjuring up sounds that invoke memories and stir the heart and soul.  Expect to see a few surprise guests dropping by too. \nObviously the aim is to raise as much as possible for a great cause. Seán’s work is genre agnostic and readily intersects folk\, free improvisation\, jazz and traditional music. \nMatthew Nolan is a Dublin based musician\, composer\, academic and curator. Since 2015\, he has produced new work in collaboration with some of the finest musicians around\, both Irish and international. He has worked on commissions from a range of prestigious performing arts institutions\, including: National Gallery\, BAM and the Film Society at Lincoln Centre in New York\, The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.\, Kilkenny Arts Festival\, Bram Stoker Festival and the St Patrick’s Festival. \nMary Barnecutt is a Dublin-based musician\, educator and curator who works with a variety of artists\, bands\, orchestras and educational projects. She has written music for short films\, theatre\, dance productions\, and has worked with artists such as\, Julie Feeney\, Nell Regan\, Justine Doswell\, Amanda Coogan\, Adrian Crowley\, Liz Roche\, Seti the 1st\, Ray Harman and Ruth O’Mahony Brady. \n  \nLaura Ann Brady \nLaura Ann Brady is an alternative folk artist and drama therapist from Dublin. She experiments with folk and Irish traditional songs in her work and this informs her own process of song writing. Laura plays various instruments including autoharp and piano and enjoys the ritual of layering vocals and sounds that invoke memories and stir the heart and soul.

DESCRIPTION:What exactly are quantum technologies and what impact do they have on society? What opportunities do they offer\, and what ethical and ecological questions do they pose? How can civil society play a role in their regulation? Can the arts help us to better understand and communicate about them? \nThese are among the questions that will be explored at ‘Entangled‘\, a public event at the Goethe-Institut Irland that shines a light on the current landscape of quantum computing and examines the relationship between quantum technologies and the arts. \nThe event forms part of ‘Living in a Quantum State’\, a new initiative by the Goethe-Institut\, which fosters public dialogue around the use of quantum technologies in today’s society\, through the lens of art. Hosted by the Goethe-Institut in Dublin\, the event is one of a series of international events taking place in cities around the world\, including in San Francisco\, Beijing\, Berlin and London. \nThe Dublin event will be moderated by Co-founder and CEO of Silicon Republic and Future Human\, Ann O’Dea and will take the format of three conversations between artists\, physicists and philosophers: \n\nProfessor John Goold and Dr Alison Fernandes (Trinity College Dublin) will examine the basics of quantum computing\, through the lenses of physics and philosophy. \nMusician and astrophysics graduate\, Emma Garnett (alias Fehdah) and Professor Harun Šiljak (Trinity College Dublin) will discuss ‘quantum uniqueness’ in the arts and explore how and why artists might develop work with this new technology. \nAnn O’Dea will speak to Dr Florian Carle from the Yale Quantum Institute (YQI) about the intersection of quantum technologies and art\, and the artistic projects that have emerged from YQI’s artist-in-residence programme.\n\nThe conversations will be followed by a musical performance from Fehdah. \n \nThe event will take place at 5pm on Wednesday\, 7th December at the Goethe-Institut at 37 Merrion Square\, Dublin 2. Whether you wish to to express solidarity with the people facing injustice\, or write directly to the authorities involved\, there’ll be plenty of pens and paper at your disposal to do just that. \nIn addition to providing space to write those all important letters\, there will also be a spate of  public meetings\, spontaneous actions\, and gigs. Highlights include “Songs against Apartheid” a concert with both Irish and Palestinian musical artists including Frances Black\, Síomha and Saied Silbak. \n \nThere will also be a unique Tropical Popical pop-up nail salon in solidarity with Dorgolesse\, a nail artist imprisoned in Cameroon for protesting\, as well as public meetings on urgent issues like climate\, housing\, art and activism with activists and thinkers such as Andrea Horan and Rory Hearne. \nThose who can’t make it in person\, are encouraged to take action online. \nFull details of all events can be found here. \nPROJECT PROTECT PROTEST runs at Project Arts Centre\, from December 5th – 10th.

DESCRIPTION:Yes and Yes takes its title from the final episode of Ulysses which both begins and ends with a “yes”. “…yes I said yes I will Yes”; the famous last words of the book\, exclaimed by Molly Bloom. This dance piece by choreographer Liz Roche sees four dancers journey through the episodes of Ulysses\, exploring the sensuality\, absurdity\, release\, and resignation of the book in movement with four extraordinary dancers and through film\, sound\, and design. DESCRIPTION:‘Lost time\, found again’ is an ambitious collection of original paintings by Maser. With this new collection\, comes a new chapter. A fusion of techniques and ideas\, honed over the last 25 years. The push and pull of time is a key narrative in this collection. With family and work at the heart of Maser’s life\, these paintings illustrate the search for equal balance across each day. The movement of energies\, the rearranging of priorities and the creation of harmony. \n  \nMaser’s paintings are a balancing act of colour\, layers and form. With each element representing a different construct of life – time\, balance\, expectations. The ambitious endeavour to keep everything afloat. Maser’s graphic eye leads the creative process with captivating compositions. While his expertise in street art\, and fine art\, bring looser forms to the canvas. Each canvas pinpoints a fleeting moment of energy and focus in daily life. \n“These paintings illustrate the search for equal balance across each day. The movement of energies\, the rearranging of priorities and the creation of harmony.” \nThe paintings display a graphic balance of forms and colour\, with clusters of busy lines creating a focal point to draw the viewer in. These clusters pinpoint fleeting moments of energy. In some paintings they feel somewhat chaotic\, and in others they bring harmony and ease to the composition. Eluding to the ebb and flow of life. Maser’s signature use of black forms\, usually painted as the final layer\, fuses the segments of the painting together. They unify the artwork within the boundaries of the canvas\, to create a visual snapshot of time. \nRuns until November 14.

DESCRIPTION:It’s fair to say Dublin has been waiting for a staging of Rossini’s opera\, waiting since 1877 actually.  Famous for the use of part of its spectacular overture as the signature tune of The Lone Ranger TV series\, William Tell is considered to be one of the most demanding operas ever written including 90 high notes for the tenor. \nThe Irish National Opera’s co-production with Nouvel Opéra Fribourg sees its 11 roles shared between 14 singers over five performances. \nGaiety Theatre\, Tuesday November 8 to Sunday 13\, €15 to €85.
