SUMMARY:Sisters
DESCRIPTION:Sisters is the title of a groundbreaking new Irish musical that celebrates the pioneering women of the past\, while paying homage to those who lit the fire of change in Ireland. \nSet in 1971 against the backdrop of Catholic Ireland and the rise of the Irish Women’s Liberation Movement\, the show revolves around the story of a young single mother\, Bernadette Boland\, ostracised by her community\, as she embarks on her journey toward self-empowerment. \nLike many single mothers at the time\, Bernadette is shunned by her family and is invisible in society. Obtaining necessities like housing and employment proves extremely challenging. Meanwhile her sister Kathleen struggles with her new married life even as the youngest\, Noleen\, embraces the budding sexual revolution. \nBernadette’s life is changed when she gets a waitressing job at Gaj’s restaurant on Baggot Street. Margaret Gaj\, who owned Gaj’s on Baggot Street\, was one of the founders of the Irish Women’s Liberation Movement (IWLM)\, and her restaurant was a place frequented by the revolutionaries\, eccentrics and outsiders who clashed\, argued and rose up to envision a liberated and free Ireland. \nUnsurprisingly\, Bernadette’s encounters with the radical customers at Gaj’s bring upheaval and change to not only her own life\, but to her family and consequently the country. \nDescribed as “both entertaining and deeply moving”\, Sisters celebrates the pioneering women of the past while paying homage to those who lit the fire of change in Ireland. \n \nWritten and directed by Tracy Ryan with musical direction by Kaeylea B. VanKeith\, Sisters opens at the dlr Mill Theatre Dundrum at 7.30pm on Saturday\, September 24th\, and will run from October 4th-8th at 7.30pm each night with a matinée performance on 8th October at 2.30pm. Tickets €22-€25. \nFor further information visit milltheatre.ie

SUMMARY:taproot_art auction: FRUIT
DESCRIPTION:taproot_art return with their 3rd annual benefit auction with 50% of proceeds raised for Merchants Quay Ireland.  Curated and auctioned by taproot_art founder\, Sophie Murphy\, this year’s auction will be entirely fruit themed featuring contemporary art/photography from leading Irish and international artists such as Shane Berkery\, Jay Miriam\, Blaise Cepis\, Robyn Carey\, Peter Doyle Decoy\, & Neil Dunne\, music from rising Irish DJ/Producer Drua\,  \nRSVP: The auction will be free to attend\, and attendees can RSVP on the eventbrite page here. (RSVP is not essential\, but note that capacity tends to be reached within 30 minutes of opening.) \nArtists: \n\nNeil Dunne (Dublin)\nBlaise Cepis (New York)\nShane Berkery (Dublin)\nMiriam Dema (Barcelona)\nRobyn Carey (Dublin)\nJay Miriam (New York)\nPeter Doyle (London/Dublin)\nFergal Styles (Dublin)\nHugh Cooney (Dublin)\nClaire Prouvost (Dublin)\nDonal Talbot (Lisbon/Dublin)\nKathryn Rose (New York)\nDan Comerford (Dublin/Paris)\nNiall Cullen (Dublin)\nAntonia (Lisbon)\nDecoy (Dublin)\nRob Mirolo (Leipzig/Dublin)\nRoisin Nolan (Dublin)\nCyan Ryan (Dublin)\nGeoff Ryan (Dublin)\n\nCurator’s note: \nMiddle English derived from Old French\, once again derived from Latin- ‘fructus’ can be defined as ‘enjoyment of produce\, harvest’. Indeed\, the origins of language can serve as a good barometer for many things\, but it is certainly a good way to understand how the masses felt about primitive things during humanity’s more nascent stages. In the case for fruit\, it would appear as though enjoyment is embedded in the very definition of its term\, and understandably so.  Fruit symbolises so much more than simply being a byproduct of the earth’s natural labours\, but also the enjoyment it offers to its both consumers\, innovators and spectators alike. It is the foundation for juice\, paintings\, landscapes\, perfumes\, memes\, vitamin intake\, and now…well\, auctions. For one night only\, you can bask in this enjoyment and appreciate fruit in all its glories and capabilities\, by observing great works from a set of top contemporary artists while devouring a mango simultaneously.   \n \n

SUMMARY:Alice Rekab - Family Lines
DESCRIPTION:Rekab’s best known work is probably ‘Units of Potential’\, the green balls affixed to the Lir Institute. However\, this commissioned work shows the expansive and intriguing nature of their practice. \nWith ‘Family Lines’ Rekab explores “embedded personal and cultural narratives; the stories that we tell and the stories that we are told about ourselves.” Objects and spaces in family member homes became keystones for Rekab’s understanding of who they are midst the “dislocation and fragmentation” of mixed-race Irish identity. \nRekab also invites Éireann and I\, an archive of Black life for Black migrants in Ireland\, to create a family living room experience replete with diverse material collected through workshops this spring. \nRich\, layered and rewarding. \nDouglas Hyde Gallery until September 25.

SUMMARY:Deirdre Murphy - Matriotism Album Launch
DESCRIPTION:Hot off the back of a breathtaking appearance at last weekend’s Electric Picnic\, singer and multi-disciplinary artist Deirdre Murphy takes to the stage at the Cobblestone this Saturday September 10th to launch her new album\, Matriotism. \nThe name of the album is inspired by the concept of devotion to the motherland; to the earth\, with some of the dark tones on the album reflecting the dark turn of health which the planet is currently undergoing. Other songs reinforce the paradox that\, even in the midst of collapse\, beauty and wonder are all around us. \n \nThe Alaskan native’s songs have been compared to Ali Farka Toure in their sparingness\, combining a peaceful dream like quality with a sharper edge of darkness and sometimes menace\, infused with lyrical influences referencing Leonard Cohen and The White Stripes. \nDeirdre will be joined by a host of musicians including Denis McAuliffe\, Claire Fitch\, Jason McNamara\, Lily Sheehan\, Becky Reilly\, Rita Garland and Kiruu for what promises to be a very special evening of music and performance. \nThe Cobblestones Backroom \nSaturday September 10th 8pm \nTickets via eventbrite \ndeirdremurphy.net

SUMMARY:Graphic Studio Dublin - 60 Years
DESCRIPTION:The story of Graphic Studio Dublin takes it from its origins in a small basement in Upper Mount Street with just an etching press and a litho press\, through various temporary premises to its current splendid and well equipped building in Distillery Court on the North Circular Road. \nThe aim of the founding members was to make the European tradition of fine art printmaking available to Irish artists. \nThis exhibition\, curated by Eithne Jordan\, RHA Keeper\, showcases a small selection of the prints made in the studio throughout these years of printmaking excellence. \nWoodblock\, mezzotint\, etching\, silkscreen\, lithography\, photo–etching\, linocut\, woodcut\, and carborundum prints reflects the varied techniques and styles employed by a multitude of artists throughout six decades; a testament to the vision of the founders of Graphic Studio Dublin. \nRHAGallery.ie \nRHA Gallery September 9 – October 23rd\, Dr. Tony Ryan Gallery

SUMMARY:Francesco Turrisi
DESCRIPTION:GRAMMY award winning pianist Francesco Turrisi has been defined a “musical alchemist” and a “musical polyglot” by the press. He left his native Italy in 1997 to study jazz piano and early music at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague\, where he obtained a Bachelor and a Master’s degree. Since 2004 he has been working successfully as a freelance musician. He has released five genre-defying and critically acclaimed albums as a leader and two as co-leader (“Tarab” a cross boundary innovative ensemble that blends Irish and Mediterranean traditional music\, and “Zahr” a project that looks at connections between southern Italian traditional music and Arabic music). His latest piano solo album Northern Migrations was described as “delicate\, wistful and wholly engrossing” by the Irish Times. \n \nTurrisi has the following to say: “I first started thinking about a piano solo program in 2015\, when I got asked to perform a solo concert at the Hugh Lane gallery. I had flirted with that idea for a long time\, but somehow was always a bit intimidated by the format. I am used to collaborating and playing with ensembles that range from very large to very small\, but being all alone on a stage is a completely different energy. There is something very introspective about performing piano solo\, something about feeling very naked and exposed. At the same time there is the exhilarating feeling of being free to do whatever you want at any given moment. So it’s not a coincidence that a personal album such as Northern Migrations came about at a very difficult and transitional period in my life. A moment of big changes\, a moment of pain\, a moment of letting go of many things dear. \n“It’s about migration\, about being far from the origins\, about the nomadic life of musicians\, about not belonging to a place in particular. It’s also about separation and loss\, about pain and crisis\, about grief and about learning to let go.” \n“This album is a very deep and personal reflection on many things that have happened in my life until now. It’s about migration\, about being far from the origins\, about the nomadic life of musicians\, about not belonging to a place in particular. It’s also about separation and loss\, about pain and crisis\, about grief and about learning to let go. Northern Migrations is also about the journey that has been my experience as a musician and everything I have picked up on the way. It reflects on my Mediterranean roots\, on the modal melodies\, instruments and rhythms that connect Sicily with North Africa. It reflects on the early baroque music which I have studied and researched while living in the Netherlands\, on the harmonic and melodic ideas behind the music of the great keyboard masters of the 17th century. It reflects on my visceral passion for jazz\, the only music that I have properly studied at a conservatory\, on my passion for improvisation and for living the music moment by moment. There are probably too many other influences and connections that I can’t individually pinpoint in this music\, coming from my constant thirst for finding and understanding new forms of musical expression. After 15 years of different musical projects and recordings\, Northern Migrations represent a distilled version of my entire musical life.”

SUMMARY:The Infinite Library
DESCRIPTION:Entitled ‘The Infinite Library’\, the multimedia installation offers visitors an immersive experience\, using VR\, holograms\, 3D-printed objects\, a QR code game and audio-visual works. The installation’s central piece is a vast VR library\, set in a cave\, in which visitors can explore a series of smaller sub-libraries\, dedicated to topics as diverse as Polynesian navigation\, South-Indian puppetry and European alchemy. \nThe exhibition was created by the Goethe-Institut in conjunction with internationally renowned multimedia artist and creative director of the exhibition\, Mika Johnson. Commenting ahead of the exhibition opening at the Goethe-Institut in Dublin\, he said: “The Infinite Library seeks to embed human stories within a much grander narrative\, one which includes the birth of our planet and the evolution of all life forms. \n \n“It reimagines what we generally understand a library to be and offers a glimpse of what a library might look like in the future. The virtual library space at the heart of the installation is conceived as a living organism\, a kind of embodiment of knowledge that introduces itself to visitors personally before inviting them to explore its house.” \nDirector of the Goethe-Institut Irland\, Franziska Höfler\, added: “As a cultural institute with a busy library\, we are excited to reimagine what a library visit in the future might entail. Experience and knowledge were recorded and exchanged long before the advent of books and other media\, and it is inspiring to explore how\, through the use modern technology\, libraries around the world might evolve in the years to come.” \nRuns until Friday July 29 \n  \n

SUMMARY:My Mom Wants To Go Back Home
DESCRIPTION:Incredibly touching photo story of Ukrainian Photographer Hanna Hrabarska and her mom\, which portrays their escape story from Ukraine in the first days of war. \n“I’m curious\, how were people feeling and what were they doing the day before the Second World War?” I thought about it for a moment. “Well\, I don’t know\,” I told my friend. “Probably\, the same as us”. \nWe finished the dinner and took a walk around Kyiv city center. We sat in a small cafe to drink cappuccinos and gossip. I went home early\, feeling a wave of anxiety. Early the next morning\, I was lying in bed in complete darkness. Suddenly\, I heard the sound of an explosion. \nI turned on my phone. The news declared: “Putin Invades Ukraine.” \nMy mom was still offline\, so I decided to give her a couple more hours of peaceful rest in my native city\, Kryviy Rih. When we finally spoke around 7 a.m. on Feb. 24\, I heard sounds on my mother’s end. They too were explosions. \nThat’s how our journey started. It took Hanna and her mom 1 week to flee Ukraine. \nIf you would like to hear a full story\, join us for Hanna’s public talk and exhibition. \nAbout Untold Ukraine \nUntold Ukraine is a collaborative art event series showcasing contemporary Ukrainian culture through different media. Our main goals are to share what we love about our culture and raise money to help Ukraine in its fight for freedom. \nPhotography Exhibition is a part of event series by Untold Ukraine. \nAll events are charitable. All ticket proceeds and donations will go straight to Ukrainian organizations working on the ground.

DESCRIPTION:Yes\, it’s 14 years M.Ward released Post-War with its achingly beautiful opener Poison Cup. That was the one which flipped the switch here but his 2020 releases Migration Stories actually marks his tenth album release. Drawing on personal narratives and liminal places\, Ward is the journeyman of his stories\, whether dueting alongside Zooey Deschanel as She & Him\, to studio work with Jenny Lewis\, to teaming up with Conor Oberst. “I love playing the alchemist who gets to combine elements that shouldn’t go together\, but every once in a while they do and it’s magic.” he says. SUMMARY:Night for Emmy
DESCRIPTION:Emmy Shigeta is a Japanese born\, Dublin based DJ and all round wonderful person. She has touched the lives of so many people in Dublin\, and throughout the rest of the country with her positivity\, kindness\, and love of all things Ireland. She has also brought together diverse groups of people and become an integral part of the Dublin musical scene. Emmy has injected life into Dublin light life at a time when it has been on life support\, and she did so for no reason other than her love of Dublin. She has introduced so many people from different communities and groups who may not have met otherwise\, and inspired others to create and try to make Dublin a better place culturally. In recent times and throughout our history\, we have had people leave our country in droves for greener pastures\, but in Emmy’s case\, she has come to Ireland because to her\, Ireland’s culture and people are the greenest pastures she could dream of. \nUnfortunately\, Emmy was only allowed to remain in Ireland on her College Visa\, which is due to expire soon. During her time here\, she worked with The Lighthouse Cinema. The Lighthouse Cinema had never previously made a work permit application for an employee\, but given her incredibly character\, work ethic\, and passion for film\, they made an exception. Unfortunately\, the Irish Government has declined this application\, and Emmy will have to leave Ireland in the near future. \nhttps://linktr.ee/emmy.dublinnuskool

SUMMARY:Diana Ross
DESCRIPTION:Fresh from stints at the Platinum Jubilee and the Sunday Legends slot at Glasto\, Ross rolls into town with her Thank U Tour. Like a number of acts such as Elton John\, Paul McCartney and now Ross\, this is the end of their live era. A Motown titan who started back in the ‘60s with the Supremes\, hitting a solo run in the ‘70s before her Chic-enabled reinvention during disco’s heyday in the early ‘80s before\, erm\, tapering off if you discount the little flurry of Chain Reaction. Thank You\, her 25th studio album and first in 15 years\, brings in Jack Antonoff on production duties and has been mostly met with a shrug of gratitude. One is expecting this live show to be a smooth celebration of an icon\, ably assisted by a strong backing band and singers\, allowing the 78-year-old to draw breath on occasion and say ‘Thank U’ to us.
