SUMMARY:Entangled: Exploring the Relationship Between Quantum Technologies and The Arts
DESCRIPTION:What exactly are quantum technologies and what impact do they have on society? What opportunities do they offer\, and what ethical and ecological questions do they pose? How can civil society play a role in their regulation? Can the arts help us to better understand and communicate about them? \nThese are among the questions that will be explored at ‘Entangled‘\, a public event at the Goethe-Institut Irland that shines a light on the current landscape of quantum computing and examines the relationship between quantum technologies and the arts. \nThe event forms part of ‘Living in a Quantum State’\, a new initiative by the Goethe-Institut\, which fosters public dialogue around the use of quantum technologies in today’s society\, through the lens of art. Hosted by the Goethe-Institut in Dublin\, the event is one of a series of international events taking place in cities around the world\, including in San Francisco\, Beijing\, Berlin and London. \nThe Dublin event will be moderated by Co-founder and CEO of Silicon Republic and Future Human\, Ann O’Dea and will take the format of three conversations between artists\, physicists and philosophers: \n\nProfessor John Goold and Dr Alison Fernandes (Trinity College Dublin) will examine the basics of quantum computing\, through the lenses of physics and philosophy. \nMusician and astrophysics graduate\, Emma Garnett (alias Fehdah) and Professor Harun Šiljak (Trinity College Dublin) will discuss ‘quantum uniqueness’ in the arts and explore how and why artists might develop work with this new technology. \nAnn O’Dea will speak to Dr Florian Carle from the Yale Quantum Institute (YQI) about the intersection of quantum technologies and art\, and the artistic projects that have emerged from YQI’s artist-in-residence programme.\n\nThe conversations will be followed by a musical performance from Fehdah. \n \nThe event will take place at 5pm on Wednesday\, 7th December at the Goethe-Institut at 37 Merrion Square\, Dublin 2. DESCRIPTION:Designed by and for activists\, PROJECT PROTECT PROTEST is a week-long act-in for future protest at Project Arts Centre\, organised in conjunction with Amnesty International. \nThe collaboration sees the creation of a temporary home for activists to meet up\, forge new connections and regroup in the hope that they will be inspired to start 2023 united and ready for action for human rights change. \nThe week sees a flurry of activities designed by and for activists which aims to foster new friendships\, help cool the burn out\, exchange wisdom\, learn from each other and meet new tribes. \nThe organisers say it’s all about looking to the future\, registering protest and making some New Year’s Activism Resolutions\, all while figuring stuff out and bonding with new friends\, over disagreements\, challenges\, and laughs. \nShona Glynn & Dhruve Singh from Presentation College\, Terenure pictured at the launch of Amnesty International’s “Write for Rights” campaign 2022. More than six hundred secondary school students from all over Ireland have already signed up to write letters\, sign petitions and participate this year and now it’s time to spread the ink wider. Whether you wish to to express solidarity with the people facing injustice\, or write directly to the authorities involved\, there’ll be plenty of pens and paper at your disposal to do just that. \nIn addition to providing space to write those all important letters\, there will also be a spate of  public meetings\, spontaneous actions\, and gigs. Highlights include “Songs against Apartheid” a concert with both Irish and Palestinian musical artists including Frances Black\, Síomha and Saied Silbak. \n \nThere will also be a unique Tropical Popical pop-up nail salon in solidarity with Dorgolesse\, a nail artist imprisoned in Cameroon for protesting\, as well as public meetings on urgent issues like climate\, housing\, art and activism with activists and thinkers such as Andrea Horan and Rory Hearne. \nThose who can’t make it in person\, are encouraged to take action online. \nFull details of all events can be found here. \nPROJECT PROTECT PROTEST runs at Project Arts Centre\, from December 5th – 10th.

This dance piece by choreographer Liz Roche sees four dancers journey through the episodes of Ulysses\, exploring the sensuality\, absurdity\, release\, and resignation of the book in movement with four extraordinary dancers and through film\, sound\, and design. Each canvas pinpoints a fleeting moment of energy and focus in daily life. \n“These paintings illustrate the search for equal balance across each day. The movement of energies\, the rearranging of priorities and the creation of harmony.” \nThe paintings display a graphic balance of forms and colour\, with clusters of busy lines creating a focal point to draw the viewer in. These clusters pinpoint fleeting moments of energy. In some paintings they feel somewhat chaotic\, and in others they bring harmony and ease to the composition. Eluding to the ebb and flow of life. Maser’s signature use of black forms\, usually painted as the final layer\, fuses the segments of the painting together. Their highly energetic show has been well received across Ireland and the UK festival circuits. 2020 saw the release of their successful debut EP ‘Sports Day’ showcasing the wide variety of sounds the band has to offer. Each member brings their own flavour to the music\, creating an overall unique sound.  Dublin has always been an important part of Cooks But We’re Chefs\, with members coming from North Dublin (Raheny\, Howth\, Drumcondra)\, Lucan and Mountjoy Street in Dublin City. Temi Nla\, meaning Temi the Great\, comes from his African name\, Temitope\, of his father’s Yoruba tribe in Nigeria. Temi has always been an entertainer. With inspirations such as Chris Brown and Neyo\, Temi started out as a producer making beats for his friends\, but soon realised his place was on the stage. Temi was born for the limelight. \nChloe Harris \nTwenty-two year old Chloe Harris has been singing for as long as she can remember. Born and raised on Sheriff Street\, Chloe has performed locally for many years\, from community talent shows to busking in the city centre. Chloe has even auditioned for the X Factor. Passionate about supporting and platforming local talent\, Chloe attributes her love of music and performance to her local youth centre\, The Swan\, and hopes to see others from her community follow in her footsteps. \nContour \nConan Wynne\, aka Contour\, supplies visuals and creates installations on an international scale. SUMMARY:Niamh Flanagan: Thin Places of Escape and Return
DESCRIPTION:This body of work features colour etchings\, monoprint and collage by Master Printmaker Niamh Flanagan\, and is the first major solo exhibition of her work since An Elsewhere Place in 2012. The motif of the house or dwelling space is central to Flanagan’s work\, and the work in this show delves deeper into the notion of the house as a formative psychological structure\, one that inhabits our dreams and our inner spaces\, while also providing a physical barrier between the inside world and the outside. There is a playfulness here between ideas of inside and outside\, where inner worlds and forgotten realms bubble to the surface\,  where moons become galaxies or cosmic eyes or tiny pebbles in the sky.  \n a world of inverted clouds \nThis work draws its inspiration from iconic dwellings and structures in folklore and fairytale\, exploring how these tales\, and the houses in them\, can shape our thoughts\, our dreams and our memories. Irish and European folk and fairy tales provided an inspiration for many of the works in the exhibition\, as were many of the great artists who have engaged with the subject matter before her – from Harry Clarke to Paula Rego\, from David Hockney to Shaun Tan. These stories are dark and deep\, they are the stories we are told when we are tucked up safe in our beds; but they tell us about danger and evil\, many of these structures are traps or prisons\, things are not always as they seem. These prints depict dark and fractal towers\, glassy sharp mountains\, and towering beanstalks\, all familiar\, and yet strange. We have returned to the world of our childhood\, but something is different in this desolate oneiric universe. Something has changed. But maybe it is we who have changed in returning\, like Oisín on his ill-fated trip from Tír na nÓg. Through these subtle explorations and juxtapositions\, Flanagan’s work seems to be gently nudging us towards another space\, maybe a thin place\, where magic can happen\, where the ground can shift in an instant\, where we are the dreamers of dreams.  \n storm approaching \nFlanagan’s practice is concerned with utopias and otherworlds\, the need for escape\, reverie and daydreaming. She cites Bachelard’s Poetics of Space as an influence\, positing the house as  ‘a space for dreaming’. Some of the works in the series move beyond fairytale and representations\, featuring more pared back and isolated imagery\, as in Refuge I: unfolding and Refuge II: tower. Here some of the structures are breaking away\, unfolding\, floating in space\, apart from their worlds\, creating sites of dreaming which further explore ideas of safety and containment\, volatility and confinement.  \n tiny cosmos  \nIn recent years Flanagan has been working in collage-etching alongside her etching process. She creates one-off original pieces using this technique where she combines elements of monoprint with collage\, using off-cuts of elements from her etchings\, combining and juxtaposing them to create new narratives and compositions. The resulting work creates something of a dream-like universe\, in which elements from a print can appear and re-appear in different settings; creating new meaning and contexts through these works.  \nRuns until October 29. \n dreaming of shoals

DESCRIPTION:Abode takes over the Hens Teeth Studio this weekend to showcase their latest collection of brands and designers such as Heresy\, Gramicci\, Stan Ray\, Sun Buddies\, Albam. The weekend will kick off on Saturday 1st @ 10am with a Launch Party at 5pm with Heresy & Slaughterhouse Film Club. The launch party is a celebration of everything done to date and to introduce a new folklore-inspired brand HERESY. The evening is stacked full of design and lore and a chance to revel in clothes\, music and film. This will be spearheaded by live traditional performances dotted throughout and a special A/V installation by Slaughterhouse Horror Film Club. With the later offering a free screening of a folk inspired The Blood on Satan’s Claw (1971) to finish off the night at 8:30pm. \n \nWho is Abode?\nLaunched in 2021\, Abode is an independent online (and sometimes in real life) store that was set up to curate brands and designers\nthat are made with meaning and authenticity. From the word go\, Abode has created a reputation for creating immersive Pop Ups that value building genuine relationships with their customers. With over a year under their belt\, Abode are settling in to their newfound role as the go-to for exciting purposeful pieces.
