SUMMARY:Yes and Yes
DESCRIPTION:Yes and Yes takes its title from the final episode of Ulysses which both begins and ends with a “yes”. “…yes I said yes I will Yes”; the famous last words of the book\, exclaimed by Molly Bloom. This dance piece by choreographer Liz Roche sees four dancers journey through the episodes of Ulysses\, exploring the sensuality\, absurdity\, release\, and resignation of the book in movement with four extraordinary dancers and through film\, sound\, and design. Over 70 minutes\, the work maps the movement of the narrative through the streets of Dublin in 1904 and explores those same spaces and encounters today\, with contemporary bodies revealing new and surprising connections. \n Photo Credit: Steve O’Connor\n \nProject Arts Centre\, Thursday November 10 to Saturday November 12\, €14/€18 \n

SUMMARY:Maser - Lost Time\, Found Again
DESCRIPTION:‘Lost time\, found again’ is an ambitious collection of original paintings by Maser. With this new collection\, comes a new chapter. A fusion of techniques and ideas\, honed over the last 25 years. The push and pull of time is a key narrative in this collection. With family and work at the heart of Maser’s life\, these paintings illustrate the search for equal balance across each day. The movement of energies\, the rearranging of priorities and the creation of harmony. \n \nMaser’s paintings are a balancing act of colour\, layers and form. With each element representing a different construct of life – time\, balance\, expectations. The ambitious endeavour to keep everything afloat. Maser’s graphic eye leads the creative process with captivating compositions. While his expertise in street art\, and fine art\, bring looser forms to the canvas. Each canvas pinpoints a fleeting moment of energy and focus in daily life. \n“These paintings illustrate the search for equal balance across each day. The movement of energies\, the rearranging of priorities and the creation of harmony.” \nThe paintings display a graphic balance of forms and colour\, with clusters of busy lines creating a focal point to draw the viewer in. These clusters pinpoint fleeting moments of energy. In some paintings they feel somewhat chaotic\, and in others they bring harmony and ease to the composition. Eluding to the ebb and flow of life. Maser’s signature use of black forms\, usually painted as the final layer\, fuses the segments of the painting together. They unify the artwork within the boundaries of the canvas\, to create a visual snapshot of time. \nRuns until November 14.

SUMMARY:Arthur Jafa - Love is the Message\, the Message Is Death
DESCRIPTION:“A head-spinning seven-minute compilation of joy\, pain and harsh fact” is how the New York Times described Arthur Jafa’s Love Is the Message\, the Message Is Death\, a video work by artist\, director\, and award-winning cinematographer Arthur Jafa which first premiered in 2017 and receives its Irish debut in partnership with the Form Foundation. \nSet to the searing highs and lows of Kanye West’s gospel-inspired hip-hop track\, Ultralight Beam\, it is a masterful convergence of found footage that traces African-American identity through a vast spectrum of contemporary imagery. \nFrom photographs of civil rights leaders watermarked with “Getty Images” to helicopter views of the LA Riots to a wave of bodies dancing to ‘The Dougie\,’ it suspends viewers in a swelling\, emotional montage. \nWed – Sun\, Gallery closed Monday and Tuesday. Her critically acclaimed debut album has been described as “a luscious\, confident and carefree record that could only have been crafted by someone in complete control of their artistic intentions”. Accompanied by two dancers and Sean Nós singer\, Saileog Ní Cheannabháin\, Cosha blends the traditional with the contemporary in a scintillating performance not to be missed. \nNixer \nFormed in the early days of the pandemic\, it was in May 202 that Nixer took to the stage in their hometown of Dublin for what was their first proper Irish outing\, as part of The Road to the Great Escape. On their performance\, Hot Press Magazine wrote\, “In a complete change of pace\, electro-punk duo Nixer bounds to the stage to deliver their own musical assertion. Peggs and Nixer have stayed true to their fresh and Irish roots\, both musically and stylistically\, as they craft their sound of Irish alternative-electro music over in London. Catch the duo at Liberty Park\, Dublin on Saturday 22nd October. \nCooks But We’re Chefs \nCooks But We’re Chefs are a 7-piece band from Dublin. Their sound encapsulates elements of house\, funk\, jazz\, soul and hip-hop. Their highly energetic show has been well received across Ireland and the UK festival circuits. 2020 saw the release of their successful debut EP ‘Sports Day’ showcasing the wide variety of sounds the band has to offer. Each member brings their own flavour to the music\, creating an overall unique sound.  Dublin has always been an important part of Cooks But We’re Chefs\, with members coming from North Dublin (Raheny\, Howth\, Drumcondra)\, Lucan and Mountjoy Street in Dublin City. Mountjoy Street has played a vital role in the formation of the band. For five years\, it was where the band wrote\, rehearsed and recorded as well as performed\, featuring regularly at the annual street party. \nBlack Canvas Curations \nTobi Balogun\, Founder and Artistic Director of Black Canvas Curations\, presents a showcase of the rich subculture of neo Irish-Afrolism for Liberty Vibe. Neo Irish-Afrolism is a healthy blend of Irish\, UK\, West-African and American culture\, which is expressed using rap music\, social dance\, fashion and art. With performances from Luke Andrew Feeney\, Sly Sode\, Vithoria Escobar\, Adam Stapleton and more\, Black Canvas Curations will bring together new voices in Irish culture for a vibrant cross artform presentation. \nZeztra \n \nZeztra are a sister duo born and raised in East Wall\, Dublin. A local act excited to play a stone’s throw away from where they live\, their unique captivating harmonies are the driving force behind their sound. Of course\, being sisters\, they have been singing and creating music together from a very young age\, but it was only in 2019 that Zeztra formed. Opening for Maverick Sabre in the Academy Dublin in 2019 is when it all started to happen for Zeztra. From there\, they went on tour around the UK and US performing at several of his shows at classic venues such as Brixton Academy\, London and Rough Trade\, Brooklyn\, New York. \nTemi Nla \nChristian Temitope Elliot is a 17 year old Irish-Nigerian singer\, songwriter and producer from the North East Inner City’s Sheriff Street. Temi Nla\, meaning Temi the Great\, comes from his African name\, Temitope\, of his father’s Yoruba tribe in Nigeria. Temi has always been an entertainer. With inspirations such as Chris Brown and Neyo\, Temi started out as a producer making beats for his friends\, but soon realised his place was on the stage. Temi was born for the limelight. \nChloe Harris \nTwenty-two year old Chloe Harris has been singing for as long as she can remember. Born and raised on Sheriff Street\, Chloe has performed locally for many years\, from community talent shows to busking in the city centre. Chloe has even auditioned for the X Factor. Passionate about supporting and platforming local talent\, Chloe attributes her love of music and performance to her local youth centre\, The Swan\, and hopes to see others from her community follow in her footsteps. \nContour \nConan Wynne\, aka Contour\, supplies visuals and creates installations on an international scale. Providing animations and lighting for the big screen\, and more recently\, custom laser animation shows\, his work takes inspiration from glitch art and electronic music culture\, syncing abstract textures with geometrical fluctuations.

SUMMARY:Niamh Flanagan: Thin Places of Escape and Return
DESCRIPTION:This body of work features colour etchings\, monoprint and collage by Master Printmaker Niamh Flanagan\, and is the first major solo exhibition of her work since An Elsewhere Place in 2012. The motif of the house or dwelling space is central to Flanagan’s work\, and the work in this show delves deeper into the notion of the house as a formative psychological structure\, one that inhabits our dreams and our inner spaces\, while also providing a physical barrier between the inside world and the outside. There is a playfulness here between ideas of inside and outside\, where inner worlds and forgotten realms bubble to the surface\,  where moons become galaxies or cosmic eyes or tiny pebbles in the sky.  \n a world of inverted clouds \nThis work draws its inspiration from iconic dwellings and structures in folklore and fairytale\, exploring how these tales\, and the houses in them\, can shape our thoughts\, our dreams and our memories. Irish and European folk and fairy tales provided an inspiration for many of the works in the exhibition\, as were many of the great artists who have engaged with the subject matter before her – from Harry Clarke to Paula Rego\, from David Hockney to Shaun Tan. These stories are dark and deep\, they are the stories we are told when we are tucked up safe in our beds; but they tell us about danger and evil\, many of these structures are traps or prisons\, things are not always as they seem. These prints depict dark and fractal towers\, glassy sharp mountains\, and towering beanstalks\, all familiar\, and yet strange. We have returned to the world of our childhood\, but something is different in this desolate oneiric universe. Something has changed. But maybe it is we who have changed in returning\, like Oisín on his ill-fated trip from Tír na nÓg. Through these subtle explorations and juxtapositions\, Flanagan’s work seems to be gently nudging us towards another space\, maybe a thin place\, where magic can happen\, where the ground can shift in an instant\, where we are the dreamers of dreams.  \n storm approaching \nFlanagan’s practice is concerned with utopias and otherworlds\, the need for escape\, reverie and daydreaming. She cites Bachelard’s Poetics of Space as an influence\, positing the house as  ‘a space for dreaming’. Some of the works in the series move beyond fairytale and representations\, featuring more pared back and isolated imagery\, as in Refuge I: unfolding and Refuge II: tower. Here some of the structures are breaking away\, unfolding\, floating in space\, apart from their worlds\, creating sites of dreaming which further explore ideas of safety and containment\, volatility and confinement.  \n tiny cosmos  \nIn recent years Flanagan has been working in collage-etching alongside her etching process. She creates one-off original pieces using this technique where she combines elements of monoprint with collage\, using off-cuts of elements from her etchings\, combining and juxtaposing them to create new narratives and compositions. The resulting work creates something of a dream-like universe\, in which elements from a print can appear and re-appear in different settings; creating new meaning and contexts through these works.  \nRuns until October 29. \n dreaming of shoals

SUMMARY:Dublin Theatre Festival
DESCRIPTION:Fresh off the heels of the Fringe comes the dame that is THE theatre festival now in its 65th year of existence. As always\, some of the local big guns bring their new work to stage and director Willie White snuffles out the smarts from abroad. \nA new play from a 91-year-old? Yes\, that would Edna O’Brien’s Joyce’s Women (Abbey)\, Sylvia Plath considered by Junk Ensemble (Complex)\, a love story for a loveless age – Good Sex by Dead Centre with Emilie Pine (Samuel Beckett)\, a techno-trance club scene with its “undulating\, stuttering\, liquid physicality” in the form of Gisèle Vienne’s Crowd (O’Reilly Theatre)\, a post-human future with lonely scarecrows – Philippe Quesne’s Farm Fatale (Project Arts Centre)\, fresh from acclaim in Edinburgh is Druid’s production of Sonya Kelly’s The Last Return while Dan Colley’s Lost Lear finds a kingdom in a care home (Project). \n \nThese serve as a mere sampler but should give you a feel for the eclectic intrigue spanning the programme. \nSeptember 29-October 15 \ndublintheatrefestival.com

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing
DESCRIPTION:Forest bathing emerged in Japan in the 1980s as a physiological and psychological exercise called shinrin-yoku (“taking in the forest atmosphere”). The purpose was twofold: to offer an eco-antidote to burnout and to inspire residents to reconnect with and protect the country’s forests. Now Aurora Procopio is bringing us to the forest with a recent series of experiences in the Furry Glen in the Phoenix Park. She leads a walk followed by a slow\, gentle mindful movement practice. She will offer a number of ‘invitations’ which will help you to deeply connect with Nature. Just don’t confuse them with some of the traditional Furry Glen invitations.  \nmycommunityspace.net/forest-bathing \nNext outing Sunday September 25 from 11am-2pm.

SUMMARY:Sisters
DESCRIPTION:Sisters is the title of a groundbreaking new Irish musical that celebrates the pioneering women of the past\, while paying homage to those who lit the fire of change in Ireland. \nSet in 1971 against the backdrop of Catholic Ireland and the rise of the Irish Women’s Liberation Movement\, the show revolves around the story of a young single mother\, Bernadette Boland\, ostracised by her community\, as she embarks on her journey toward self-empowerment. \nLike many single mothers at the time\, Bernadette is shunned by her family and is invisible in society. Obtaining necessities like housing and employment proves extremely challenging. Meanwhile her sister Kathleen struggles with her new married life even as the youngest\, Noleen\, embraces the budding sexual revolution. \nBernadette’s life is changed when she gets a waitressing job at Gaj’s restaurant on Baggot Street. Margaret Gaj\, who owned Gaj’s on Baggot Street\, was one of the founders of the Irish Women’s Liberation Movement (IWLM)\, and her restaurant was a place frequented by the revolutionaries\, eccentrics and outsiders who clashed\, argued and rose up to envision a liberated and free Ireland. \nUnsurprisingly\, Bernadette’s encounters with the radical customers at Gaj’s bring upheaval and change to not only her own life\, but to her family and consequently the country. \nDescribed as “both entertaining and deeply moving”\, Sisters celebrates the pioneering women of the past while paying homage to those who lit the fire of change in Ireland. \n \nWritten and directed by Tracy Ryan with musical direction by Kaeylea B. VanKeith\, Sisters opens at the dlr Mill Theatre Dundrum at 7.30pm on Saturday\, September 24th\, and will run from October 4th-8th at 7.30pm each night with a matinée performance on 8th October at 2.30pm. SUMMARY:taproot_art auction: FRUIT
DESCRIPTION:taproot_art return with their 3rd annual benefit auction with 50% of proceeds raised for Merchants Quay Ireland.  Curated and auctioned by taproot_art founder\, Sophie Murphy\, this year’s auction will be entirely fruit themed featuring contemporary art/photography from leading Irish and international artists such as Shane Berkery\, Jay Miriam\, Blaise Cepis\, Robyn Carey\, Peter Doyle Decoy\, & Neil Dunne\, music from rising Irish DJ/Producer Drua\,  \nRSVP: The auction will be free to attend\, and attendees can RSVP on the eventbrite page here. Indeed\, the origins of language can serve as a good barometer for many things\, but it is certainly a good way to understand how the masses felt about primitive things during humanity’s more nascent stages. In the case for fruit\, it would appear as though enjoyment is embedded in the very definition of its term\, and understandably so.  Fruit symbolises so much more than simply being a byproduct of the earth’s natural labours\, but also the enjoyment it offers to its both consumers\, innovators and spectators alike. It is the foundation for juice\, paintings\, landscapes\, perfumes\, memes\, vitamin intake\, and now…well\, auctions. For one night only\, you can bask in this enjoyment and appreciate fruit in all its glories and capabilities\, by observing great works from a set of top contemporary artists while devouring a mango simultaneously.   \n \n

SUMMARY:Alice Rekab - Family Lines
DESCRIPTION:Rekab’s best known work is probably ‘Units of Potential’\, the green balls affixed to the Lir Institute. However\, this commissioned work shows the expansive and intriguing nature of their practice. \nWith ‘Family Lines’ Rekab explores “embedded personal and cultural narratives; the stories that we tell and the stories that we are told about ourselves.” Objects and spaces in family member homes became keystones for Rekab’s understanding of who they are midst the “dislocation and fragmentation” of mixed-race Irish identity. \nRekab also invites Éireann and I\, an archive of Black life for Black migrants in Ireland\, to create a family living room experience replete with diverse material collected through workshops this spring. \nRich\, layered and rewarding. \nDouglas Hyde Gallery until September 25.

SUMMARY:Deirdre Murphy - Matriotism Album Launch
DESCRIPTION:Hot off the back of a breathtaking appearance at last weekend’s Electric Picnic\, singer and multi-disciplinary artist Deirdre Murphy takes to the stage at the Cobblestone this Saturday September 10th to launch her new album\, Matriotism. \nThe name of the album is inspired by the concept of devotion to the motherland; to the earth\, with some of the dark tones on the album reflecting the dark turn of health which the planet is currently undergoing. Other songs reinforce the paradox that\, even in the midst of collapse\, beauty and wonder are all around us. \n \nThe Alaskan native’s songs have been compared to Ali Farka Toure in their sparingness\, combining a peaceful dream like quality with a sharper edge of darkness and sometimes menace\, infused with lyrical influences referencing Leonard Cohen and The White Stripes. \nDeirdre will be joined by a host of musicians including Denis McAuliffe\, Claire Fitch\, Jason McNamara\, Lily Sheehan\, Becky Reilly\, Rita Garland and Kiruu for what promises to be a very special evening of music and performance. \nThe Cobblestones Backroom \nSaturday September 10th 8pm \nTickets via eventbrite \ndeirdremurphy.net

SUMMARY:Graphic Studio Dublin - 60 Years
DESCRIPTION:The story of Graphic Studio Dublin takes it from its origins in a small basement in Upper Mount Street with just an etching press and a litho press\, through various temporary premises to its current splendid and well equipped building in Distillery Court on the North Circular Road. \nThe aim of the founding members was to make the European tradition of fine art printmaking available to Irish artists. \nThis exhibition\, curated by Eithne Jordan\, RHA Keeper\, showcases a small selection of the prints made in the studio throughout these years of printmaking excellence. \nWoodblock\, mezzotint\, etching\, silkscreen\, lithography\, photo–etching\, linocut\, woodcut\, and carborundum prints reflects the varied techniques and styles employed by a multitude of artists throughout six decades; a testament to the vision of the founders of Graphic Studio Dublin. \nRHAGallery.ie \nRHA Gallery September 9 – October 23rd\, Dr. Tony Ryan Gallery

SUMMARY:Francesco Turrisi
DESCRIPTION:GRAMMY award winning pianist Francesco Turrisi has been defined a “musical alchemist” and a “musical polyglot” by the press. He left his native Italy in 1997 to study jazz piano and early music at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague\, where he obtained a Bachelor and a Master’s degree. Since 2004 he has been working successfully as a freelance musician. He has released five genre-defying and critically acclaimed albums as a leader and two as co-leader (“Tarab” a cross boundary innovative ensemble that blends Irish and Mediterranean traditional music\, and “Zahr” a project that looks at connections between southern Italian traditional music and Arabic music). His latest piano solo album Northern Migrations was described as “delicate\, wistful and wholly engrossing” by the Irish Times. \n \nTurrisi has the following to say: “I first started thinking about a piano solo program in 2015\, when I got asked to perform a solo concert at the Hugh Lane gallery. I had flirted with that idea for a long time\, but somehow was always a bit intimidated by the format. I am used to collaborating and playing with ensembles that range from very large to very small\, but being all alone on a stage is a completely different energy. There is something very introspective about performing piano solo\, something about feeling very naked and exposed. At the same time there is the exhilarating feeling of being free to do whatever you want at any given moment. So it’s not a coincidence that a personal album such as Northern Migrations came about at a very difficult and transitional period in my life. A moment of big changes\, a moment of pain\, a moment of letting go of many things dear. \n“It’s about migration\, about being far from the origins\, about the nomadic life of musicians\, about not belonging to a place in particular. It’s also about separation and loss\, about pain and crisis\, about grief and about learning to let go.” \n“This album is a very deep and personal reflection on many things that have happened in my life until now. It’s about migration\, about being far from the origins\, about the nomadic life of musicians\, about not belonging to a place in particular. It’s also about separation and loss\, about pain and crisis\, about grief and about learning to let go. Northern Migrations is also about the journey that has been my experience as a musician and everything I have picked up on the way. It reflects on my Mediterranean roots\, on the modal melodies\, instruments and rhythms that connect Sicily with North Africa. It reflects on the early baroque music which I have studied and researched while living in the Netherlands\, on the harmonic and melodic ideas behind the music of the great keyboard masters of the 17th century. It reflects on my visceral passion for jazz\, the only music that I have properly studied at a conservatory\, on my passion for improvisation and for living the music moment by moment. There are probably too many other influences and connections that I can’t individually pinpoint in this music\, coming from my constant thirst for finding and understanding new forms of musical expression. After 15 years of different musical projects and recordings\, Northern Migrations represent a distilled version of my entire musical life.”

DESCRIPTION:“Chaotic\, colour-free\, funky\, stinky explosion pop” is how Remi Wolf describes her sound. The 26-year-old Californian delivered it all in her debut Juno and drops by after a summer which had her opening for the Chili Peppers and Lorde and playing Lollapalooza in Stockholm. “For Juno\, I was listening to a lot of Beck and Santana and Michelle Branch and the Japanese Breakfast album that dropped last year. Now\, I’m listening to a lot of Mac DeMarco\, The Flaming Lips and Third Eye Blind\,” said Wolf in Cultured Mag last month. Embrace her hook-filled and hyper-saturated upbeat vibes.
