DESCRIPTION:Monsters of the Apocalypse acts as a queer reimagining of the end of the world\, as well as a proposal for what a new one might look like. Using the language and presentation of radical preachers as well as her own experience living as a transfemme of color within a Eurocentric heteronormative society\, Patel investigates how the monstrous body (the “other”) can be used to create fear and revulsion\, but also as a site of exploration and societal growth. In us\, we all have a monster waiting to get out\, but to find them\, we must die\, and we must be reborn. The young Clondalkinite pops a green on a gable end\, puts pink and blue wigs into a scene which could be either neighbourhood pleasantries or Funny Games\, there’s the brilliant Garda caught on his phone and transferred to canvas. It’s the well recognised\, slightly pathetic\, mid run of a pointless pursuit. DESCRIPTION:There’s little doubt that St Patrick’s Festival has taken the snake by the scruff of the neck and shed much of the sad skin it once had. In the city\, its programming pathway has seen it create a diverse and embracing cultural agenda whilst turning Collins Barracks into a splendid Festival Quarter. This year Queer club night Mother present Cultúr Club (March 16\, €20) with the first ever Geilí and the acclaimed Seanchoíche storytelling night amid their razzle dazzle of drag and DJs. \nPillow Queens & friends bring 12 acts to four stages (March 18\, €35). The other hot addition is Me Auld Flower\, a new food and drinks festival from the team behind The Big Grill. The upsell here is they are taking over the Fruit and Veg Market with over 50 vendors (March 16-19\, €22-€26). Of course\, not all pockets are lined for these nights out but there are numerous free events on the programme too including the Festival Quarter by day. Bringing a packed lunch and a flask of tea to the parade is always an option.

The book departs from two film projects filmed across Greece\, Egypt and Ireland that take up themes of migration\, border ecologies and ornithomancy. Alongside a selection of stills\, script excerpts and research images\, Byrony Dunne presents her own expository footnotes as well as commissioned texts by artist Suzanne Walsh\, film critic and writer Mouwafak Chourbagui and curator Daphne Vitali. \n  \nShifting perspectives and temporalities\, it oscillates from the telescopic to the panoptic\, from the divination practices of the ancient Greek imaginary to the clumsy artifice of the modern nation-state system\, from the rooftop pigeon coops of Cairo to the military and ornithological infrastructure of the Mediterranean. Pondering the development of how telecommunications and air travel led to the exploration of the solar system\, Clarke’s gaze stretches to the furthest reaches of Saturn as well as the exponential growth of Alzheimer’s disease and the rapid growth of dementia (10m each year).  \nThe second aspect are transmission and receiver objects from the Museum which was founded by his father in 1981\, running for 15 years before going into storage until Clarke unearthed them in 2017. His father ended up developing dementia to which Clarke says\, “For me there was a metaphorical and tragic irony to the fact the founder of a museum of broadcasting and communications would develop a disease which would mean he could no longer communicate.” \nRHA until March 26

DESCRIPTION:Handmade artisan rugmakers Ceadogán are set to launch “Island”\, an exciting new project which brings together a dozen of Ireland’s finest artists\, each of whom will be drawing on their individual designs and interpretations to create a unique one-off rug or wall hanging piece. The unique collection of stunning one-off handmade rugs will go on public display at the Hang Tough Contemporary gallery on Exchequer Street\, Dublin from January 26th. \nThis innovative project includes pieces from some of Ireland’s leading artists\, including Gottfried Helnwein\, Dorothy Cross\, Sean Scully\, Maser\, Domino Whisker\, Gilbert Menassa\, Hannah Ní Mhaonaigh\, Mary O’Connor\, Colm Mac Athlaoich\, Sean Atmos\, Lola Donoghue and Alice Fitzgerald. \nFollowing the exhibition\, each piece will be auctioned off\, with 50% of profits from the sale being donated to Peter McVerry Trust for homelessness. DESCRIPTION:It is utterly apt to have this all consuming question planted before the next generation of aspiring artists whilst paying homage to the late director of NCAD\, Noel Sheridan. His performance work filmed by Hobba in ’94 explored the reasons to pursue this path\, stating “if you do art as a second choice it will show in the work” and “you must be oppositional to any manifestations of the superstructure” and while you must do bargains with all of these\, meeting their agendas will never benefit your work. \nHere Oísín Byrne and Vaari Claffey revisit the framework with practising visual artists invited to respond to Sheridan’s provocations. DESCRIPTION:Bowie – Icon\nRathfarnham Castle hosts a stunning exhibition of over 60 Bowie photographs by Philippe Auliac. The acclaimed French photographer has captured the rock icon many times over his long career\, since first shooting Bowie in 1972\, with many of his images  now deemed classic portrayals. \nAs an official chronicler of Bowie\, Auliac had premium stage-side access to many of Bowie’s most iconic shows\, so this is a great opportunity to get some insights into some of his magical stage performances. This visual feast also features some rare interviews with the starman\, as well as audiovisual screening of further images. \nWed Jan 11th – Sun Jan 29th. Open 9.30am – 4.45pm.  \nFree admission.
