SUMMARY:Channel Tres
DESCRIPTION:It’s the way he pants\, right? Whether it’s on Terrace Martin’s new single ‘Chucks’ or his own audio cruise controller ‘Topdown’\, he gets all Barry White under your bonnet when he does. There’s much more to Channel Tres besides and everything about his resurgent house beats signal him being on the cusp of a Kaytranadaesque breakthrough ever since his sublime EP released in 2018. \nHe’s collaborated with Tove Lo ‘Attention Whore’ and Robyn and SG Lewis on ‘Impact’ as well as had the likes of Tyler the Creator endorse him remixing EARFQUAKE and Jpegmafia turning up on his ‘Black Moses’ track. Sold? This is Real Cultural Shit which aptly is the name of his forthcoming EP. Dance with abandon. \nButton Factory\, Sunday March 26

SUMMARY:Say She She
DESCRIPTION:You looking for some discodelic soul action this month? Look no further than this Brooklyn based female-led seven piece and their “dreamy harmonies\, catchy hooks and up tempo grooves.” \nTheir debut LP Prism was hailed as ‘feminist funk’ and they certainly hit a sweet spot with their sounds including latest singles ‘Trouble’ and ‘In My Head’. Taking their name from Nile Rogers’ lyric “C’est chi chi”\, these seem like could well become a Sugar Club staple. \nSugar Club\, Saturday March 25

SUMMARY:Frigid
DESCRIPTION:Writer-performer Rosa Bowden inhabits a variety of characters in this production which scooped the Little Gem award at the Fringe last year. Niamh O’Reilly is 14 and still a fridget. However\, things are about to change at the school disco. \n Set in 2007 – when feminism wasn’t hip and consent was just a form you got your parents to sign to get you out of PE – this is a coming of age comedy about frenemies\, first times and figuring it out. Emerging from the Scene + Heard last year\, it shows the wonderful evolution of work finding new audiences in the process. \nBewley’s Cafe Theatre until March 25\, €10-€15

SUMMARY:Nova Twins
DESCRIPTION:Nu-metal-punk crossover duo Nova Twins earned some crossover cred with their 2022 Mercury Prize nomination which recognised the genre-mashing edge evident on their sophomore release Super Nova. Having supported the likes of Wolf Alice\, Skunk Anansie and Enter Shikari\, they bring the attitude and energy of resistance. Sample sing it back lyrics include\, “I’m a samurai\, samurai\, samurai\, dancer | Warrior\, warrior\, warrior\, fighter | Ahh\, I’m a boss bitch | Ahh\, I’m Cleopatra” from Cleopatra. Flex it.

SUMMARY:Carl Hickey - Everything and Nothing
DESCRIPTION:There’s a vibrant bounce to Carl Hickey’s body of work. The young Clondalkinite pops a green on a gable end\, puts pink and blue wigs into a scene which could be either neighbourhood pleasantries or Funny Games\, there’s the brilliant Garda caught on his phone and transferred to canvas. It’s the well recognised\, slightly pathetic\, mid run of a pointless pursuit. Hickey’s observations live and breath the city\, someone glaringly Dublin\, some more intimate and isolated. \n Atelier Now\, March 16-April 1.

SUMMARY:St Patrick’s Festival
DESCRIPTION:There’s little doubt that St Patrick’s Festival has taken the snake by the scruff of the neck and shed much of the sad skin it once had. In the city\, its programming pathway has seen it create a diverse and embracing cultural agenda whilst turning Collins Barracks into a splendid Festival Quarter. This year Queer club night Mother present Cultúr Club (March 16\, €20) with the first ever Geilí and the acclaimed Seanchoíche storytelling night amid their razzle dazzle of drag and DJs. \nPillow Queens & friends bring 12 acts to four stages (March 18\, €35). The other hot addition is Me Auld Flower\, a new food and drinks festival from the team behind The Big Grill. The upsell here is they are taking over the Fruit and Veg Market with over 50 vendors (March 16-19\, €22-€26). Of course\, not all pockets are lined for these nights out but there are numerous free events on the programme too including the Festival Quarter by day. Bringing a packed lunch and a flask of tea to the parade is always an option.

SUMMARY:Bryony Dunne - The Sky Only Welcomes Those with Wings
DESCRIPTION:Emerging from a body of research into the entanglement of manmade systems and nonhuman life\, ‘The Sky Only Welcomes Those with Wings‘ juxtaposes the vantage points of birds and people\, exploring humanity’s preoccupation with control\, hierarchies and omniscience. The book departs from two film projects filmed across Greece\, Egypt and Ireland that take up themes of migration\, border ecologies and ornithomancy. Alongside a selection of stills\, script excerpts and research images\, Byrony Dunne presents her own expository footnotes as well as commissioned texts by artist Suzanne Walsh\, film critic and writer Mouwafak Chourbagui and curator Daphne Vitali. \n \nShifting perspectives and temporalities\, it oscillates from the telescopic to the panoptic\, from the divination practices of the ancient Greek imaginary to the clumsy artifice of the modern nation-state system\, from the rooftop pigeon coops of Cairo to the military and ornithological infrastructure of the Mediterranean. Through the thermal infrared cameras of aid workers\, miniature camcorders mounted to eagles\, birdwatching binoculars\, border surveillance apparatuses and satellite tracking imagery\, this lithe volume provides insight into how birds see and are seen\, in hopes that we might begin to see our own systems for what they are: neither natural nor inevitable\, however normal they may appear. \nRuns at Library Project until March 26

SUMMARY:Manifest
DESCRIPTION:Developed as part of What Does He Need? a long-term project by artist and writer Fiona Whelan\, Brokentalkers and Rialto Youth Project\, Manifest takes the form of a workshop where a group of men are facilitated in a conversation about what it means to be a man. Drawing on testimony\, research and the men’s own personal experiences\, Manifest weaves between themes of violence\, empathy\, power and the suppression of vulnerability in a world where men can often be seen as a liability to themselves and others. \nManifest explores the physicality and psychology of masculinity combining movement\, testimony and research\, exploring societal expectations placed on boys and young men and how learned behaviours are perpetuated\, particularly by the influence of other men. \nProject Arts Centre\, Thursday February 23 to Saturday March 4

SUMMARY:Declan Clarke: The Museum of Broadcasting and Loneliness
DESCRIPTION:Comprising of two elements – Saturn and Beyond is a film tracing the history of transcontinental communication and broadcasting using slide film\, video footage and analogue photography. Pondering the development of how telecommunications and air travel led to the exploration of the solar system\, Clarke’s gaze stretches to the furthest reaches of Saturn as well as the exponential growth of Alzheimer’s disease and the rapid growth of dementia (10m each year). \nThe second aspect are transmission and receiver objects from the Museum which was founded by his father in 1981\, running for 15 years before going into storage until Clarke unearthed them in 2017. His father ended up developing dementia to which Clarke says\, “For me there was a metaphorical and tragic irony to the fact the founder of a museum of broadcasting and communications would develop a disease which would mean he could no longer communicate.” \nRHA until March 26

SUMMARY:Scene + Heard
DESCRIPTION:We almost lost Scene + Heard last year. Let’s just say the Arts Council made an oversight on a funding application and have made amends. The much beloved festival of new work supports new emerging voices as they make their way up on to the stage and under the spotlight. Off the back of short blurbs\, here’s a few which piqued our interest. The Last Incel which is “a comedy about a group of incels who slowly implode when a women sleeps with one of their members and crashes their zoom meeting.” (Feb 9\,10)\, Happy Capital\, Mark believes he’s found his golden goose\, Cryptocurrency and he won’t let not knowing what it is or how it works affect his dream (Feb 16\, 17)\, What is Fusion Murga?\, “a flamboyant\, satirical\, musical comedy about Ireland’s housing crisis.” (Feb 25).  \n \n  \nSmock Alley Theatre until Saturday February 25. \nsceneandheard.ie

SUMMARY:Carly Rae Jepsen
DESCRIPTION:If you miss or missed your Olympia pop mo with Tove Lo this autumn\, then chalk Carly Rae down for your reunion/comeback. Call Me Maybe might be a decade old but still ranks as one of the sassiest bubblegum three minute pop songs ever laid down and has led to more than a few hand gestures and sashays at the party. \nCarly released The Loneliest Time\, her sixth studio album this autumn. While the likes of Dua Lipa have eclipsed her in star power\, it’s a solid outing addressing issues such as missing family (Western Wind) and dating app world (Beach House). Conflicting emotions for any twenty-something student living at home. \nOlympia\, Saturday February 5.

SUMMARY:Photography - Mike Bunn
DESCRIPTION:Mike Bunn turned 80 this year so it’s as good a time as ever to have a retrospective of his photography career. 130 photographs from his portfolio are on display as one delves into his work spanning fashion\, portraiture and nature as documented in our In The Frame section last month. \nBunn told Deirdre McQuillan in the Irish Times how\, “I was a good looking teddy boy from London in a double breasted knee length coat made by a tailor\, black silk scarf\, pinstripe trousers and velvet boots\,” when he was hanging around Dublin in the ‘80s. “I used to go to the Bailey with a green flower in my lapel and drink Crème de Menthe Frappé \, You couldn’t miss me.” \nMike Bunn: The Man Who Sees Through Shadows runs at Farmleigh Gallery until March 19. 10am – 5pm\, Tuesday to Sunday. \nRead more

SUMMARY:Byron Wallen’s Gayan Gamelan Ensemble performing Boards of Canada
DESCRIPTION:Almost 25 years later Music has the Right to Children remains one of the most sublime debuts of all time. Eerie\, meditative and layered; it was and remains a benchmark in electronica taking the concept of childhood and splicing it through a textured prism of sound. Now take a jazz trumpeter\, his eight-piece gamelan ensemble and open it up to interpretation. Bringing a range of percussive instruments such as xylophones\, gongs\, bells\, trumpet\, synthesisers\, bass guitar\, drums and conches (shell trumpets); this is a live experience and not simply playback of the opus. SUMMARY:'Why be an artist?' (after Leigh Hobba and Noel Sheridan)
DESCRIPTION:It is utterly apt to have this all consuming question planted before the next generation of aspiring artists whilst paying homage to the late director of NCAD\, Noel Sheridan. His performance work filmed by Hobba in ’94 explored the reasons to pursue this path\, stating “if you do art as a second choice it will show in the work” and “you must be oppositional to any manifestations of the superstructure” and while you must do bargains with all of these\, meeting their agendas will never benefit your work. \nHere Oísín Byrne and Vaari Claffey revisit the framework with practising visual artists invited to respond to Sheridan’s provocations. We have the likes of Isadora Epstein using magic as her prism of exploration and Gary Farrelly stating that\, “problems are the bread and butter of an artist to cultivate and not resolve” and that they must use their “radical egocentric disposition to believe whatever they want to believe is true.” Essential pondering. \nNCAD Gallery until February 15. \nTalks series \nTuesday 31st January 2023\, 1.15PM\nA Walk-Through the Archive with Valerie Connor \nTuesday 7th February 2023\, 1.15PM\nWhy Be A Curator\nVaari Claffey\, Why be a curator? response to the ‘Why be an artist? SUMMARY:Market Merchy Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Cadence Weapon recently outlined how he ended up losing $2\,098.86 on a bare bones tour last autumn\, how acts like Santigold\, Regina Spektor\, Animal Collective and Metronomy have all cancelled tours lately owing to feasibility issues and how receiving $0.00318 per Spotify stream in Canada isn’t enough to make up the shortfall. xe.com won’t even let us convert that figure into euros. Cadence Weapon is an international act of somewhat note who won the Polaris Prize in 2021.\n\nSpare a thought then for music acts of somewhat less renown who also face the same struggle without the magnification of significant international recognition. The third annual ‘Merchy Christmas’ artists market\, presented by One Stop Band Shop\, is a chance for fan payback to show gratitude\, thank them for the music and put some coals in their fire for the year ahead. Acts to be confirmed at time of going to print but since it is the brainchild of Saint Sister and their manager Conor Cusack\, we can assume one act on the stall. \n\n\nGrand Social\, Saturday December 17 & Sunday December 18

SUMMARY:Past The End
DESCRIPTION:The Fumbally Cafe is the place to be on December 16th\, where a stunning lineup get together for Past The End\, a musical fundraiser for Women’s Aid. The organisers tell us that the name is a nod to The End is Nigh\, an epic night in 2012\, when singer Lisa Hannigan and others played to a sweet Christmas gang to mark the end of the Mayan Calendar and of all existence. (Editor’s note –  some of us are still here.) \nPerformers on the night include Brian Mooney’s band The Next New Low\, featuring Sean Coleman\, Daniel Luke Smith\, and James Smith. There will also be a trio performance with Mary Barnecutt\, Sean Mac Erlaine and Mathew Nolan\, while singer songwriter Laura Ann Brady will be conjuring up sounds that invoke memories and stir the heart and soul.  Expect to see a few surprise guests dropping by too. \nObviously the aim is to raise as much as possible for a great cause. See you there! \nTickets are €15 plus booking fees and VAT. All proceeds from the night will go to Women’s Aid.\n \n*Note: The Bar will be open\, but food will not be available. \n  \nAbout The Performers… \n \nThe Next New Low \nEverything is nearly always falling apart when the next new low play\, but somehow the well- crafted songs save us and we all leave with a comfortable glow. Featuring Brian Mooney\, Sean Coleman\, Daniel Luke Smith\, and James Smith. \n  \nMary Barnecutt\, Matthew Nolan\, & Seán Mac Erlaine \nSeán Mac Erlaine is a composer\, musician and mastering engineer. Recognised as one of Ireland’s most forward-thinking creative musicians\, he has worked with many leading lights of music today. Since 2015\, he has produced new work in collaboration with some of the finest musicians around\, both Irish and international. He has worked on commissions from a range of prestigious performing arts institutions\, including: National Gallery\, BAM and the Film Society at Lincoln Centre in New York\, The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.\, Kilkenny Arts Festival\, Bram Stoker Festival and the St Patrick’s Festival. \nMary Barnecutt is a Dublin-based musician\, educator and curator who works with a variety of artists\, bands\, orchestras and educational projects. She has written music for short films\, theatre\, dance productions\, and has worked with artists such as\, Julie Feeney\, Nell Regan\, Justine Doswell\, Amanda Coogan\, Adrian Crowley\, Liz Roche\, Seti the 1st\, Ray Harman and Ruth O’Mahony Brady. \n  \nLaura Ann Brady \nLaura Ann Brady is an alternative folk artist and drama therapist from Dublin. Laura plays various instruments including autoharp and piano and enjoys the ritual of layering vocals and sounds that invoke memories and stir the heart and soul.

SUMMARY:Premiere of Company Philip Connaughton’s LOVE SONGS
DESCRIPTION:Company Philip Connaughton returns with the premiere run of Love Songs\, a seductive and provocative new dance show revelling in the infinite possibilities of love. As the talented Dublin choreographer and dancer brings his unique vision to his most ambitious work to date\, Love Songs offers audiences a chance to embark on a journey of exploration in the company of a beguiling cast of eight inter-generational performers bent on entertaining. \n“The starting point for Love Songs was me wondering how my grandparents – who were all born pre 1900’s – might hypothetically look on my lifestyle now as a gay man\, and if\, or how\, they might respond to that. This got me thinking about how radically things have changed in society between then and now\, and how creating a language around love is an incredibly important tool without which it’s sometimes hard to even imagine certain situations if they don’t affect you directly. So in this piece we are thinking about different or as yet unconsidered relationships of love in our ever-changing society\, and with this powerful and dynamic ensemble\, we’re creating an experience filled with poignancy\, humour\, passion\, and purpose.” – Philip Connaughton \nAnd so the stage of the Project Arts Centre\, is set for a Christmas spectacle that sees Helen Jordan\, Fearghus Ó Conchúir\, Andy de Souza\, Orla Dwyer\, Isabella Oberländer\, Anna Kaszuba\, Clare Adam and Philip Connaughton take a deep\, devotional\, dive into the glorious undefinable\, while tethered to a love song. \n \nLove Songs is presented by Company Philip Connaughton in association with Once Off Productions\, Project Arts Centre\, and Cork Opera House. Love Songs is funded by the Arts Council. Philip Connaughton is a Resident Artist at Project Arts Centre. \nPerformances 7.30pm Wed 14th (Preview) – Sat 17th December \nMatinee Performance Saturday 17th at 2.30pm \nProject Arts Centre
