SUMMARY:Erased Tapes
DESCRIPTION:Founded by sonic architect and explorer Robert Raths aka ghostworker in 2007\, London-based label Erased Tapes is an independent record label that has consistently nurtured genre-defying artists whilst keeping an avant-garde ethos. This celebration pulls together some of their talent for a takeover of the Concert Hall akin to the much heralded Haunted Dancefloor event last year. \nElectronic producer Rival Consoles headlines while legendary ensemble Penguin Cafe will also perform. There’s a Kiasmos DJ set from Janus Rasmussen\, live performance from Galway-based American songsmith Peter Broderick\, the return of Japanese voice artist Hatis Noit\, a modular synth set from Brooklyn composer and Dawn of Midi-drummer Qasim Naqvi\, the first Irish solo show from Berlin-based cellist and long-time Nils Frahm collaborator Anne Müller\, plus a DJ set from the latest Erased Tapes family member\, French avant-RnB producer Crayon. Pick and choose as you bounce about. \nNational Concert Hall\, Saturday May 20.

SUMMARY:Libertine Market Crawl - A New Flea Market + Pub Crawl in Dublin 8
DESCRIPTION:Léna Seale got in touch to tell us about ‘Libertine Market Crawl‘\, an independent new event she is organising in the historic Dublin 8 district this coming weekend. Billed as a lively ‘Flea Market Pub Crawl’ through the Liberties\, the event features fifty market stalls spread across four pubs within walking distance of each other in The Liberties.\n\nThe first edition takes place on Sunday\, May 7th from 12pm – 5pm\, with four participating pubs involved. Beginning at The Thomas House\, the suggested walking route then takes in Dudley’s and Lucky’s\, finishing up with a live music performance at Arthur’s Blues and Jazz Pub. \nEvents on the day include tarot reading in Dudley’s\, a DJ in Thomas House and Coke Lane Pizza in Lucky’s\, with Alt Pop/Indie musician Leila Jane playing in Arthur’s from 2-4pm. \nThere will also be a wide range of stalls from records\, vintage clothes\, art and items including some of the old Guinness memorabilia associated with the area. \nThe event is family and pet friendly. Entry is free and everyone is welcome. \nThe organisers intend to run the event on the first Sunday of each month\, with plans for the addition of even more pubs and stalls to the next event. SUMMARY:Hayley Blais
DESCRIPTION:Passing through en route to the Great Escape comes Blais from Vancouver. Her debut LP Below the Salt dropped in 2020 so it’s fair to say she’s playing catch up with her fanbase. (Damn Pan!). There’s lots of reasons to gush about her and her upbeat/sad indie pop musings. Nostalgia and adolescent yearnings colour her early thoughts but latest singles Coolest fucking bitch in town and Survivor’s Guilt point to new lyrical directions. A sonic hug on a Sunday night. \nWhelan’s Upstairs\, Sunday April 30.

SUMMARY:Willie Nelson’s 90th Birthday
DESCRIPTION:Willie turns 90 on the 29th and remains one of the most enduringly popular country music singers of his time. He claims marijuana saved his life and how “energy follows thought\, so be careful what you’re thinking.” With his customary bandana and braids\, Nelson started out in honky-tonks before migrating to the Grand Old Opry and has released seventy full-length records since his début in 1962. \nThis fundraiser brings together local musicians who all wish to pay tribute to Nelson\, presumably by covering his greatest hits. Artists include Maija Sofia\, NC Lawlor\, Brigid Mae Power\, Joseph Chester\, Séan Millar\, Tandem Felix and others. \nWhelan’s\, Friday April 28\, (in aid of Aoibhneas & The Peter McVerry Trust)

SUMMARY:Irish Gothic - Patricia Hurl
DESCRIPTION:Last chance to catch this major retrospective on the work of Patricia Hurl. Spanning over 40 years and featuring over 70 of the artist’s expressionist paintings and drawings. Hurl’s oeuvre is by nature political  and\, since the 1980s\, her work has explored loss\, pain\, frustration and loneliness. Hurl is part of the Na Cailleacha collective who explore being female\, older and attendant stereotypes. “There is a certain haunting simplicity in the gesture of each stoke and an understanding of the gestural power which fills each canvas\,” says museum director Annie Fletcher about Hurl’s work. \nIMMA until May 21.

SUMMARY:Reds na hÉireann
DESCRIPTION:Kevin Brannigan\, who did our wonderful cover story Draoícht na Life for issue 208\, is the stiúrthóir of this look at Communism in Ireland. It’s a timely and insightful look into the grassroots and global movement and comes hot off the heels of Adam Curtis’s epic Russia 1985-1999: TraumaZone. The Communist Party of Ireland set up stall in 1921 with James Connolly inspiring the likes of Lenin. \nThis is a fascinating trawl through history with a number of protagonists contributing as they set about tackling property rights and the plight of the working class. Plus ça change… “Everyone smoked in closed rooms with no open windows\,” recollects Sinéad Morrissey whose parents met through the Party. Of course there were internecine feuds and the issue of the North to grapple with as armed struggle entered the fray of discourse. \n \nThe archival footage is wonderful. We get to see David Vipond marching in the Monaghan by-election of ’73 with the slogan\, “Down with the three main bourgeoise parties – Fianna Fail\, Fine Gael and Labour.” 2025 is coming into view. \nAssemble Comrades! \n Sugar Club\, Sunday\, April 23 (screening followed by panel discussion)

SUMMARY:Robert Armstrong - After mountains\, more mountains
DESCRIPTION:“For a certain kind of painter\, painting is a process. Of course\, making a painting is necessarily a process\, usually one that delivers a finished work. But for some\, perhaps many painters\, the finished work is less a conclusion than a question. Robert Armstrong tends to see all paintings\, not just his own\, in terms of the questions they pose. \nHence\, his work has consistently incorporated a kind of running commentary on painting. Most obviously\, perhaps\, he has made works that explicitly address works made in the past\, notably during the Renaissance\, though not at all because they are historically distanced. Rather he is drawn to the way the painters in any era set about making the pictures they make. And he gravitates towards the residual questions lurking in apparent pictorial coherence: the gaps\, the oddities\, the tacit assumptions.” – Aidan Dunne.

SUMMARY:From Georgia with Love
DESCRIPTION:Elena Tsomaia is a Stockholm-based\, Georgian curator of From Georgia With Love\, an exhibition of the work of Tbilisi-based artist Keti Davlianidze. Elena got in touch back on January 2 asking for our support in assisting her ambition to host these love themed works. \nThere’s something wonderful about the lengths Tsomaia is going to in order to promote “Georgian art and the country at large.” And as the Rose Revolution\, which ushered in a nonviolent change of power there 20 years ago\, shows signs of wilting midst a weakened civil society and democracy recently culminating in a contentious Russian-inspired foreign agent law\, this is a timely reminder of the bigger picture we all need to see. \nIrish Georgian Society\, April 20-22.

SUMMARY:Metronome: Chequerboard
DESCRIPTION:It’s a decade since John Lambert aka Chequerboard released The Unfolding which came five years after Penny Black but he is primed to bridge the gap this summer with Souvenir and\, as always\, the wait will be worthwhile. Homebeat’s Metronome series affords us a first chance to see what beauty and splendour has been stirring his soul in the interim. \nHis live show will be imbued by the presence of Barry Halpin (Crash Ensemble) on guitar and Mary Barnecutt and Lioba Petrie on cellos. \nNational Concert Hall\, Thursday April 13 \n \n

SUMMARY:Venus Patel - Monsters of the Apocalypse
DESCRIPTION:Monsters of the Apocalypse acts as a queer reimagining of the end of the world\, as well as a proposal for what a new one might look like. Using the language and presentation of radical preachers as well as her own experience living as a transfemme of color within a Eurocentric heteronormative society\, Patel investigates how the monstrous body (the “other”) can be used to create fear and revulsion\, but also as a site of exploration and societal growth. In us\, we all have a monster waiting to get out\, but to find them\, we must die\, and we must be reborn. Patel scooped the top prize at the 2022 RDS Visual Arts Award and this show forms part of Pallas’s artist-initiated project series. \nPallas Projects/Studios until Thursday April 28\, closing event performance The Preacher’s Sermon that night at 6pm. \nRead more:\nRDS Visual Art winners announced

SUMMARY:The Guinness Choir
DESCRIPTION:The Guinness Choir present Mozart’s Requiem and his Mass in C Minor. \nThis is a rare opportunity to experience and enjoy Mozart’s two great masterpieces – the Requiem and the Mass in C Minor. \nThe Requiem was Mozart’s final work\, composed in the short period before his death in December 1791. He was only 35. Though completed by others in his circle\, Mozart\, as with the Mass in C Minor\, which he had mostly written by the mid 1780s\, captures the drama and visceral emotion of the liturgy. \nThough much scholarly debate continues as to who completed the pieces\, there is no escaping the magnificence and virtuosic demands of both\, such that generations of artists have been inspired by these great masterpieces ever since. Don’t miss the dramatic and hopeful beauty that this opportunity presents. \nConducted by Ciarán Kelly with soloists Kelli-Ann Masterson\, Soprano\, Megan O’Neill\, Soprano\nLeanne Fitzgerald\, Alto Andrew Gavin\, Tenor and Rory Dunne\, Bass

DESCRIPTION:It’s the way he pants\, right? Whether it’s on Terrace Martin’s new single ‘Chucks’ or his own audio cruise controller ‘Topdown’\, he gets all Barry White under your bonnet when he does. There’s much more to Channel Tres besides and everything about his resurgent house beats signal him being on the cusp of a Kaytranadaesque breakthrough ever since his sublime EP released in 2018. \nHe’s collaborated with Tove Lo ‘Attention Whore’ and Robyn and SG Lewis on ‘Impact’ as well as had the likes of Tyler the Creator endorse him remixing EARFQUAKE and Jpegmafia turning up on his ‘Black Moses’ track. SUMMARY:Carl Hickey - Everything and Nothing
DESCRIPTION:There’s a vibrant bounce to Carl Hickey’s body of work. The young Clondalkinite pops a green on a gable end\, puts pink and blue wigs into a scene which could be either neighbourhood pleasantries or Funny Games\, there’s the brilliant Garda caught on his phone and transferred to canvas. It’s the well recognised\, slightly pathetic\, mid run of a pointless pursuit. Hickey’s observations live and breath the city\, someone glaringly Dublin\, some more intimate and isolated. \n Atelier Now\, March 16-April 1.

SUMMARY:St Patrick’s Festival
DESCRIPTION:There’s little doubt that St Patrick’s Festival has taken the snake by the scruff of the neck and shed much of the sad skin it once had. In the city\, its programming pathway has seen it create a diverse and embracing cultural agenda whilst turning Collins Barracks into a splendid Festival Quarter. This year Queer club night Mother present Cultúr Club (March 16\, €20) with the first ever Geilí and the acclaimed Seanchoíche storytelling night amid their razzle dazzle of drag and DJs. \nPillow Queens & friends bring 12 acts to four stages (March 18\, €35). The other hot addition is Me Auld Flower\, a new food and drinks festival from the team behind The Big Grill. The upsell here is they are taking over the Fruit and Veg Market with over 50 vendors (March 16-19\, €22-€26). Of course\, not all pockets are lined for these nights out but there are numerous free events on the programme too including the Festival Quarter by day. Bringing a packed lunch and a flask of tea to the parade is always an option.

SUMMARY:Bryony Dunne - The Sky Only Welcomes Those with Wings
DESCRIPTION:Emerging from a body of research into the entanglement of manmade systems and nonhuman life\, ‘The Sky Only Welcomes Those with Wings‘ juxtaposes the vantage points of birds and people\, exploring humanity’s preoccupation with control\, hierarchies and omniscience. The book departs from two film projects filmed across Greece\, Egypt and Ireland that take up themes of migration\, border ecologies and ornithomancy. Alongside a selection of stills\, script excerpts and research images\, Byrony Dunne presents her own expository footnotes as well as commissioned texts by artist Suzanne Walsh\, film critic and writer Mouwafak Chourbagui and curator Daphne Vitali. \n \nShifting perspectives and temporalities\, it oscillates from the telescopic to the panoptic\, from the divination practices of the ancient Greek imaginary to the clumsy artifice of the modern nation-state system\, from the rooftop pigeon coops of Cairo to the military and ornithological infrastructure of the Mediterranean. Through the thermal infrared cameras of aid workers\, miniature camcorders mounted to eagles\, birdwatching binoculars\, border surveillance apparatuses and satellite tracking imagery\, this lithe volume provides insight into how birds see and are seen\, in hopes that we might begin to see our own systems for what they are: neither natural nor inevitable\, however normal they may appear. \nRuns at Library Project until March 26

SUMMARY:Manifest
DESCRIPTION:Developed as part of What Does He Need? a long-term project by artist and writer Fiona Whelan\, Brokentalkers and Rialto Youth Project\, Manifest takes the form of a workshop where a group of men are facilitated in a conversation about what it means to be a man. Drawing on testimony\, research and the men’s own personal experiences\, Manifest weaves between themes of violence\, empathy\, power and the suppression of vulnerability in a world where men can often be seen as a liability to themselves and others. \nManifest explores the physicality and psychology of masculinity combining movement\, testimony and research\, exploring societal expectations placed on boys and young men and how learned behaviours are perpetuated\, particularly by the influence of other men. \nProject Arts Centre\, Thursday February 23 to Saturday March 4
