SUMMARY:Joanne Hynes | What We Carry With Us
DESCRIPTION:What do we leave behind\, take forward\, carry with us? Through a selection of clothing\, objects and text\, Joanne Hynes explores fictional\, autobiographic and creative meaning in gesture\, process\, and materiality. Her first solo exhibition is formed around extracts from Hynes’s fictional essays\, prose\, poetry and short stories. Hynes carries ideas of loss and belonging into material questioning through collecting\, making and writing\, investigating the notion of staying present with discomfort through process. In so doing\, Hynes reflects on design thinking from 25 years in fashion\, marking a point of reconciliation in her creative practice.  \nKevin Kavanagh Gallery\, July 20-August 5 (Tues-Sat\, 11am-5pm) \n

SUMMARY:Glass Biennale
DESCRIPTION:Seeking to “present and provoke international perspectives\, explorations and manifestations of glass as creative expression\,” the glass biennale should be on everyone’s exhibition list for the summer. Glass is formed when a molten material cools so quickly that a crystalline structure does not arrange itself. \nAs a result\, glass is found in the nature. There’s a diverse collection of objects  whether it’s stained glass\, fibre glass\, lamp work glass or neon glass with some of the exhibits for sale also. Some of note include Róisín de Buitléar and Alisa Shakor’s Breaking News\, Valerie Rey’s Respect\, Hilde de Rooij’s Memories and Krista Israel’s Without Title. It’s glass! \nCoach House Gallery at Dublin Castle until August 20

SUMMARY:Continuous Patterns
DESCRIPTION:Continuous Patterns reruns to the grounds of IMMA as a widescreen\, open ended interpretation of the artistic output of Dublin city – a snapshot of what is both current and continuous in the cannon of expression that surrounds and nourishes IMMA and the stunning grounds of the RHK. \nContinuous Patterns offers two distinct flavours each evening\, with Friday\, 14 July focusing on a programme of upbeat\, contemporary and future focused music\, while Saturday 15 July presents a slightly more relaxed atmosphere\, perfect for friends and family. \nFriday July 14th sees incredible live performances led by a de facto Dublin legend Jape\, with performances in tandem from the brilliant and brash nu jazz stylings of Bricknasty\, the exciting emerging soulful voice of Irish-Cuban singer Qbanaa\, alongside the elegant and esoteric moods of one of Dublin’s underground electronic stalwarts Dreamcycles\, with complimentary DJ sets from Kerry native Efa O’Neill fresh off a landmark Boiler Room set at AVA Festival\, the unstoppable grooves of Apartment Records boss Kenny Hanlon\, and the ever vibrant sound pallets of Dublin based Japanese DJ Emmy Shigeta. \n \nSaturday July 15th brings a slightly different energy\, with the epic widescreen soundscapes of the hugely popular Talos\, the sparkling hook laden indie creations of Ailbhe Reddy\,  the beautifully nuanced tones of guitar darling Cian Nugent\, alongside the consistently brilliant voice of Caoi De Barra(Wyvern Lingo) and perfectly pitched Saturday evening DJ selections from broadcasting legend and champion of disparate sounds Donal Dineen\, the effortless cool of Dublin based – Ethiopian DJ and DDR resident Hewan Mulugeta\, and the easy charm of superb Brazilian DJ Pablo Santos. \n \nAs well as this bespoke music line up\, we are excited to hostMovement\, a programme of talks curated by the wonderful mind of Siobhan Kane (Young Hearts Run Free/The Irish Times/Winter Papers) who prefaces the programme with this quote :  “…Consciousness is only possible through change; change is only possible through movement…” – The Art of Seeing (1942)\, Aldous Huxley (1894-1963). \nA raft of diverse and interesting contributors will explore this idea over the course of two days at IMMA\, reflecting on how we contribute and why\, and if we can effect an element of change. On a more general level\, we will be talking about the need for movements; artistic\, political\, and physical. Featuring; award winning illustrator Annie Atkins\, the renowned journalist Jim Carroll\, lecturer in the Department of Applied Social Studies at Maynooth Rory Hearne\, dancer\, choreographer and artistic director of United Fall Emma Martin\, Dublin writer Peter McNamara\, and DJ and Give Us The Night activist Sunil Sharpe. \nContinuous Patterns will also include a bespoke Live Art experience from celebrated multimedia artist Farouk Alao. Summer Breeze’is inspired by the experience of being present and living in the moment; feeling the summer breeze on a hot summer’s day when the sun is beaming. This immersive moving-image piece has been specially commissioned by IMMA for this year’s IMMA Summer Party\, Continuous Patterns. \nThere is also delicious food from Caminero Bakery\, Ginger BBQ\, Tribal Burger – and exquisite refreshments from Whiplash Beer\, Tanqueray Gin and Craft Cocktails.  \nContinuous Patterns is presented in partnership with with Sherpa Events & Homebeat.

SUMMARY:Chelsea Manning
DESCRIPTION:Chelsea Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison for the largest leak of confidential documents ever to be released into the public domain. The junior intelligence analyst released over 251\,000 diplomatic cables and more than 482\,000 Army reports. Fortunately\, President Obama commuted her sentence. She recently published a memoir README.txt\, where she talks about the leaks and her experiences as a trans person in the army. She’s triggered discourse about whistleblowing\, government transparency\, and national security. Oh\, and she also DJs on occasion. \nVicar Street\, Saturday July 8\, €27.50

SUMMARY:Person Presence Perception
DESCRIPTION:Of course\, first and foremost\, the star attraction here will always be the Casino which was designed by Sir William Chambers in the late eighteenth-century as a neoclassical pleasure house for James Caulfeild\, 1st Earl of Charlemont. Ceres and Bacchus hold dominion from the roof above four Egyptian lions\, winged satyrs\, ox skulls and mysterious twin-tailed merfolk perched on the roof’s two urns. Take in one of their daily tours at 10am\, 12am\, 2pm and 4pm (until the end of October) and learn about the intricacies of the building such as the fasces moulding of a bundle of rods with an axe which we discovered is where the word fascism derives from. (thanks Robert) \n \nWithin the building you will find 41 works owned by either the OPW or Department of Finance which are themed around people within the deceptively large number of rooms. There’s Becks Butler’s ‘Loopies Field’ series which we featured In the Frame in 2020. Christopher Banahan’s ‘Lizzie in Interior’ sits atop a walnut cabinet in the China Closet framed by hand-painted Chinese wallpaper (lead photo). Amanda Doran’s ‘Beast Mode’\, Garry Loughlin’s ‘Evdokia’ and Mónika Bögyös ‘Untitled’ caught our attention whether seen beside gold painted Ionic fluted (grooved) columns or with Apollo’s head emerging from a sunburst in the ceiling. As you do.

SUMMARY:Nuala O’Donovan: Process - a living thing
DESCRIPTION:Nuala O’Donovan makes sculptural work using porcelain clay. Her pieces are built from thousands of individual handmade components based on patterns from living forms\, “My starting points are detailed drawings of plants\, shells and seeds. In order that the form of the finished work is consistent with the qualities of the source material\, I use a set of constraints based on a combination of regular and irregular geometric principles which are found in nature.” Intricately beautiful. \nDean Arts Studio\, June 17-26\, 12pm – 6pm

SUMMARY:Pulp
DESCRIPTION:There’s a lot of nostalgia rolling through town in June; Soft Cell\, Pet Shop Boys\, Gladys Knight\, Peter Gabriel\, Blur and Kraftwerk are all cropping up at some point. But Pulp is our pick of the lot. There’s a variety of reasons for this\, one very simple one is that it is on a Friday. \n \nThis made be a crude means of evaluation but there’s a lot to be said in getting the weekend started with a gig rather than having mid-week hesitations and fears. The last time we caught Pulp here was back in 2011 at the Electric Picnic when Jarvis Cocker proved he’s up there with Jagger and Cave when it comes to a spindly-leg strut. Sadly sans Steve Mackey\, their bass guitarist\, who died last year\, Pulp have witty bangers aplenty mostly culled from their Different Class and This is Hardcore. Let’s all meet up in the year 2023? \n \nSt Anne’s Park\, Friday June 9\, €49.90

SUMMARY:Every Brilliant Thing
DESCRIPTION:A welcome return for this bittersweet journey through the world of depression. Originating as a short story by Duncan Macmillan who then teamed up with Jonny Donahoe to realise a stage adaptation which in turn lead to a HBO documentary with Tobey Maguire\, this staging brings back Andrea Ainsworth (director) and Amy Conroy (narrator) to tell the story of an unnamed seven-year-old girl who makes a list of “every brilliant thing” that makes life worth living in the hope that she can make her mother feel better. The writing has been called “heartfelt and buoyant” and the production as “magically uplifting”. Audience members play an improvisational part too.   \nPeacock until Saturday July 1

SUMMARY:Mario Sughi: Give me a ring tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:We’ve known Mario for a long time now. The Italian painter and illustrator moved here in the late ‘80s having previously worked as a cartoonist in Italian satirical magazines. His father Alberto was hailed as one of the finest painters of his generation. Besides rocking a pair of shades\, Mario is also gifted. \nHis colour-popping work accentuates femininity – lips protrude\, eyes lock focus and legs are limber. Give me a ring tomorrow has Mario pair his work with an accompanying essay of sensual intrigue as a cleaner called Maria inserts herself into the lives of a couple. \nUnited Arts Club\, Thursday June 8 – Sunday July 2.

SUMMARY:Club night - King
DESCRIPTION:The evolution of fresh Queer off shoots in the clubbing scene continues apace with arrival King this month. Promising ‘Big Dyke Energy’\, its inaugural outing has Claire Beck on the decks and we’d be remiss not to credit Sarah Moloney for the wonderful artwork for the night. \nAnother exciting debutante on the scene is Fluid\, a club dedicated to “bisexual\, pansexual\, the fluid\, the flexible. It took the floor at Pawn Shop in early May and expect future dates to be announced soon. \nKing @ Opium\, Friday May 26\, €10/€12.50 \n@kingclubdublin \n@fluidclubdublin

DESCRIPTION:Flourishes of indie\, electronic\, rock\, gospel\, folk\, pop and more besides abound on Drew Makes Noise‘s debut LP. There is an abundance of musical influences evident on the genre-hopping trip that is Let The Whole Tape Run. Conjuring comparisons to Grandaddy (Flame) and Dinosaur Jr (Lemonade) to Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (Something to Kill)\, Drew Makes Noise delivers in his singular and unique stylings. SUMMARY:193rd RHA Annual Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The annual blockbuster enters its home run. Akin to Culture Night for art\, it’s a one-stop chance to see what is being created right now and what is deemed worthy of notice and reflective of disciplines by the selection committee. The RHA is also celebrating its bicentenary which adds a little more heft. Everyone can weigh in with their opinion but the most valuable input one can have is by going to see the works\, appreciating the craft\, broadening your visual art horizons and  forming an opinion or simply experiencing. \nRHA until Sunday July 30

SUMMARY:Lavinia Fontana: Trailblazer\, Rule Breaker
DESCRIPTION:It’s funny to observe how the naming of exhibitions are pivoting towards contemporary appeal. We happened to be in Antwerp last month and spotted a poster for ‘Baroque Influencers’. Now we have Lavinia Fontana who is a ‘trailblazer’. The late sixteenth-century Bolognese artist is best known for her successful portraiture\, but also worked in the genres of mythology and religious painting. \n \nThis tentpole summer exhibition in the National Gallery will explore Fontana’s extraordinary life through her paintings and drawings\, offering insight into the cultural climate that enabled the artist to flourish as a female artist of the period. This will be the first monographic exhibition to examine Fontana’s work in almost three decades\, and the first to focus on her portraits. \n \nNational Gallery until Sunday August 27\, €8-€18. \nWednesday Mornings: 9.15am – 11.30am all tickets free. \nThursday Evenings: 5pm – 7.15pm all tickets €5.

SUMMARY:Hayley Blais
DESCRIPTION:Passing through en route to the Great Escape comes Blais from Vancouver. Her debut LP Below the Salt dropped in 2020 so it’s fair to say she’s playing catch up with her fanbase. (Damn Pan!). There’s lots of reasons to gush about her and her upbeat/sad indie pop musings. SUMMARY:Willie Nelson’s 90th Birthday
DESCRIPTION:Willie turns 90 on the 29th and remains one of the most enduringly popular country music singers of his time. He claims marijuana saved his life and how “energy follows thought\, so be careful what you’re thinking.” With his customary bandana and braids\, Nelson started out in honky-tonks before migrating to the Grand Old Opry and has released seventy full-length records since his début in 1962. \nThis fundraiser brings together local musicians who all wish to pay tribute to Nelson\, presumably by covering his greatest hits. SUMMARY:Irish Gothic - Patricia Hurl
DESCRIPTION:Last chance to catch this major retrospective on the work of Patricia Hurl. Spanning over 40 years and featuring over 70 of the artist’s expressionist paintings and drawings. Hurl’s oeuvre is by nature political  and\, since the 1980s\, her work has explored loss\, pain\, frustration and loneliness. Hurl is part of the Na Cailleacha collective who explore being female\, older and attendant stereotypes. “There is a certain haunting simplicity in the gesture of each stoke and an understanding of the gestural power which fills each canvas\,” says museum director Annie Fletcher about Hurl’s work. \nIMMA until May 21.

SUMMARY:Reds na hÉireann
DESCRIPTION:Kevin Brannigan\, who did our wonderful cover story Draoícht na Life for issue 208\, is the stiúrthóir of this look at Communism in Ireland. It’s a timely and insightful look into the grassroots and global movement and comes hot off the heels of Adam Curtis’s epic Russia 1985-1999: TraumaZone. The Communist Party of Ireland set up stall in 1921 with James Connolly inspiring the likes of Lenin. \nThis is a fascinating trawl through history with a number of protagonists contributing as they set about tackling property rights and the plight of the working class. Plus ça change… “Everyone smoked in closed rooms with no open windows\,” recollects Sinéad Morrissey whose parents met through the Party. Of course there were internecine feuds and the issue of the North to grapple with as armed struggle entered the fray of discourse. \n \nThe archival footage is wonderful. We get to see David Vipond marching in the Monaghan by-election of ’73 with the slogan\, “Down with the three main bourgeoise parties – Fianna Fail\, Fine Gael and Labour.” 2025 is coming into view. \nAssemble Comrades! \n Sugar Club\, Sunday\, April 23 (screening followed by panel discussion)
