DESCRIPTION:We first encountered the work of Morag Myerscough on these shores when the late John Reynolds brought the UK artist over to create the Together Bandstand for the inaugural edition of All Together Now in 2018. “John loved my ‘Temple of Agape’ and I wanted to make a new piece of work that was unique to his new festival\,” said Morag. \nNow she returns with A Good Night’s Sleep – a bold\, colourful\, immersive intervention which is the culmination of over ten months working with the Irish Refugee Council’s Youth Service\, DoubleTake Studio\, New Horizon HUB\, and the Tallaght Ukrainian community to explore the multifaceted theme of ‘belonging’. \nThe participants shared their hopes and dreams\, fears and struggles in workshops led by the artist. The groups connected using the power of colour\, word\, and sound to express themselves. \nRua Red until March 3.

DESCRIPTION:Slaughterhouse start their ‘Winter of Despair’ season with a 50th anniversary screening of The Exorcist. William Friedkin\, who bade farewell to us this summer\, directed this classic which became the first horror film to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. Many of The Exorcist‘s cast and crew members believed the set was cursed. After a number of eerie incidents on the New York City set\, including a studio fire Friedkin regularly brought in a priest\, Father King\, to bless the cast\, crew\, and set. By the end of the film’s production\, nine people associated with its making had passed away. \nA Q&A follows it with director Kate Dolan (You Are Not My Mother)\, comedian Peter McGann and Aran from the ClassHorrorCast.

SUMMARY:Cursed Murphy Versus the Resistance
DESCRIPTION:This mob are one of the most intense\, full-on\, rub you up the right/wrong way live acts around. Punk poetry parlando\, with driving rhythms and industrial dirt. Art rock\, but not arty (OK\, maybe a bit)\, they like their Iggy & the Stooges\, their Velvet Underground\, Leonard Cohen\, Sonic Youth\, Patti\, PJ\, Neu!\, you name it. \nThey’re a mongrel bunch\, for sure. Guitarist Dan does dirty as well as drones. Johnny switches from sci-fi keyboards to rotten noise guitar\, pedal boards everywhere. The rhythm section is an octopus: Paul and Harvey and the Gangnus sisters Rebecca and Jasmin. Jas also played loads of violin on the last record. \nThe troupe are fronted by writer and spoken-word mouth almighty Peter Murphy\, author of the novels John the Revelator and Shall We Gather at the River (Faber). In September 2021 the band embarked on a German mini-tour\, playing Wuppertal and Berlin as part of the travelling Here/There exhibition\, supported by Culture Ireland. They followed this with a sold-out show in Wexford Opera House with guests Basciville and poet Stephen James Smith\, plus a collaborative EP\, Tell It to A Tree. \n \nCursed Murphy Versus the Resistance released their second album\, Republic of the Weird\, in November 2022. A more divergent piece of work\, using electronics and folk overtones and string arrangements\, it sounded future-shocked and rather beautiful in parts\, in the same way a volcanic eruption or an oil spill is beautiful. It produced a slew of singles: ‘Hold That Line’\, ‘Republic of the Weird’\, and ‘This Is Not Your Love Song’\, the latter an industrial-disco banger somewhere between Leonard and Trent Reznor\, co-written and co-produced with Basciville. \nBefore we let you go\, you’ll be needing to hear what some nice folk wrote about them. Hot Press dubbed them “avant-garde adventurers from Wexford”\, which made them sound fierce cool altogether\, and voted Republic of the Weird the spoken word album of 2022 (even though it’s not really a spoken word album\, but never look a gift horse etc…). Among their peers\, their most vocal admirers include Undertone Paul McLoone\, Cathy from Pillow Queens\, the lads from Sons of Southern Ulster\, novelist Donal Ryan and one-time Cramps bass-player and general alt. legend Fur Dixon. DESCRIPTION:The humanitarian horrors which are unfolding in Palestine are beyond harrowing. Besides the calls for an immediate ceasefire\, the war being waged has not just elicited sympathy and condemnation but also spurred on artists to come together to aid a shattered people. There are countless fundraisers on the go but the Gig for Gaza is the big one. Lankum\, Damien Dempsey\, Lisa O’Neill and The Mary Wallopers will all take to the stage for a concert with all net proceeds going to Medical Aid for Palestinians. A poster for the gig designed by Selkies and screen-printed by Damn Fine Print will be available from Bang Bang in Phibsborough and at the gig itself\, priced at €30. This will be the first of a number of gigs and events around Ireland under the ‘Irish Artists for Palestine’ Group that will take place from November 28 to December 3 with full listings available on irishartistsforpalestine.com. Bit of a shame that Ticketmaster didn’t waive or donate fees on this.

DESCRIPTION:To celebrate a century since Brendan Behan’s birth\, the Abbey Theatre presents this modern take on The Quare Fellow\, directed by Tom Creed. Having premiered at the Pike Theatre in 1954 under the direction of Alan Simpson\, this modern classic was first produced at the Abbey in 1956 (Ernest Blythe turned it down originally) and has not been staged there since 1984. It unfolds over the timeframe between the arrival in a prison (based on Mountjoy Jail) of an unnamed man who we never see\, condemned to death for the murder of his brother\, and his execution\, with which the play ends. The top notch cast of 15\, all female and non-binary actors\, will perform all of the male characters\, continuing Behan’s legacy of subversion\, surprise and confrontation.

DESCRIPTION:From the struggles of job hunting and navigating Ireland’s dating scene to searching for red chilli peppers in Lucan\, this timely one-man show is a heartfelt and hilarious exploration of the challenges faced by those in search of a brighter future. \nThePerfect Immigrant revolves around Levi\, a courageous young Nigerian man who leaves his homeland\, with three worn suitcases\, to fulfill his dream of studying engineering in a foreign land. Samuel Yakura describes how parts of the show are autobiographical: “The story is about a young adult navigating manhood\, loneliness\, and self-discovery in a foreign place. The piece draws\, in part\, from my own experiences as a migrant. Similar to the show’s protagonist\, I came to Ireland in 2018 to pursue a masters in civil engineering. The piece is quite different from a traditional theatre show. We tell Levi’s story through a powerful mix of poetry\, prose\, and with an Irish-Nigerian sense of humour that will entertain and resonate with audiences of all backgrounds”. \nFor native Irish audiences\, The Perfect Immigrant provides a unique insight into the cultural challenges of migration. Yakura believes that stories like these will also encourage more minority cultures to engage with Ireland’s theatre and arts scene. \n“Ireland is undergoing a transformative journey towards becoming a thriving\, multicultural society. However\, there is a noticeable lack of representation in the arts and in audience attendance. By sharing stories like The Perfect Immigrant on stage\, we hope to encourage minority cultures to explore the vibrant world of theatre and arts in Ireland. Personally\, my journey as a poet has been enriched by coming here. I would encourage the general theatre community but also those outsiders to come and experience this inspiring show”. \nFollowing an award-winning premiere at last year’s Dublin Fringe Festival\, “The Perfect Immigrant” written and performed by poet and playwright Samuel Yakura and directed by Katie O’Halloran will tour theatre venues across Ireland this November. DESCRIPTION:Sean Atmos is a Dublin based visual artist well known for his large-scale murals & engaging canvas works. Coming from a background in graffiti\, Sean began his creative journey in 2006 & has been developing his practice since. Sean uses a base of typography in his work. He abstracts the rigid forms of lettering\, to create a geometric landscape for viewers to decode. \n \n‘Alternative Paths’ is an evolution of Sean’s signature style and primarily takes shape through vibrant hand painted typographic overlays. Artist Leon Butler has imagined what the identity of a festival of art and technology could be and has generated a new font seen in the Beta logo. The final logo almost looks hand drawn or screen printed with beautifully imperfect edges – this intersection of cutting-edge technology and human creativity is exactly what Beta will explore with the festival. \nBeta’s website features a new commission from artist and designer Farouk Alao. Specialising in 3D motion and web design\, he has drawn inspiration from nature\, his world\, and human emotions. His vision explores the intersection of reality and imagination. The motion piece on Beta’s website\, called the Beta cube\, positions Beta as a centre point in which art\, technology and creativity resolve and makes use of the unique font designed by Butler. \nYou can view the events and exhibition which form part of Beta. The festival will take place November 2 – 5 with the opening night taking place at Roe & Co Distillery. The exhibition that opens as part of it continues in The Digital Hub and the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) for a further two weeks until November 19th. \n

She returns to Ireland in October 2023 for her biggest ever headline concert at Dublin’s iconic Vicar Street\, as part of a major tour in support of recently released third studio album. \nThe album\, entitled Ghosts is released this month via Gondwana Records\, features high-profile collaborations from the like of Ólafur Arnalds\, Duncan Bellamy (Portico Quartet) and Patrick Watson. \nHer debut album Esja\, a beguiling collection of solo piano pieces on Gondwana Records was released to international acclaim in 2019\, with her sophomore album\, the expansive\, cinematic\, Home following in 2020. Home was mastered by Zino Mikorey in Berlin (known for his work on albums by artists such as Nils Frahm and Ólafur Arnalds). For her work on these records\, Hania won four prestigious Fryderyk Awards (Poland’s answer to the Grammys). \nIn January 2021\, Hania signed her publishing rights to Wise Music Group\, where her music is represented next to names like Dustin O’Halloran\, Hildur Guðnadóttir and Ludovico Einaudi. This year\, Hania was asked by director Susanna Fanzun to score the documentary On Giacometti about the artist Alberto Giacometti. DESCRIPTION:A collective of current and former sex workers have organised Red Umbrella Film Festival\, Ireland’s first-ever sex worker film festival. \nThe festival will run from Thursday 19 until Sunday 22 October across four Dublin venues: Light House Cinema\, Unite the Union on Abbey Street\, Wigwam\, and the Grand Social. \n \nThe goal of the festival is to create conversation and community around the issues sex workers face in Ireland and internationally. By creating space for sex workers’ stories\, the festival organisers hope to challenge stigma and shame\, fight for the safety and self-determination of sex workers in Ireland\, and build towards a decriminalised future. \nThe festival launches on October 19 in the Light House cinema\, where Swedish writer and director Tove Pils will present the Irish premiere of their documentary LABOR (2023). Ten years in the making\, LABOR follows Hannah and her friends – dominatrix Chloe\, and escort Cyd\, in their journey of self-discovery through San Francisco’s vibrant queer scene. \n \nOther highlights of the festival include the European premiere of FLY IN POWER (2023)\, a documentary exploring the work of Red Canary Song\, a grassroots organisation of Asian and migrant sex workers and massage workers. The film will be followed by a panel discussion with the filmmakers. DESCRIPTION:It’s been a while since a blockbuster salute to Warhol has hit town\, IMMA in 2007 to be precise. Arguably\, the best known and most influential artist of the 20th Century what fascinates us now is his appeal or relevance to a new TikTok-ified audience – will they care for his pop art? How well will Silver Clouds translate to Insta reels? It’s almost a comfort blanket of sorts for older generations as they embrace the soup cans and nod to Nixon. What actually caught our attention is the room in which his lesser known early drawings around love\, sex and desire are housed. They show the range of his talent from the get-go. His ‘Electric Chair’ series which dates back to 1963 still resonates – there’s a Xeroxed style replication which tightropes the viewer into questioning their relationship to the dark subject matter whilst appreciating his colourful pop take on it.
