SUMMARY:Sean Atmos - Alternative Paths
DESCRIPTION:Sean Atmos is a Dublin based visual artist well known for his large-scale murals & engaging canvas works. Coming from a background in graffiti\, Sean began his creative journey in 2006 & has been developing his practice since. Sean uses a base of typography in his work. He abstracts the rigid forms of lettering\, to create a geometric landscape for viewers to decode. \n \n‘Alternative Paths’ is an evolution of Sean’s signature style and primarily takes shape through vibrant hand painted typographic overlays. Sean’s personal narrative is subtly woven throughout the work\, exploring the parallels between his creative process and athletic pursuits. \nAs an avid runner\, Sean has curated a series of engagement events at Atelier Now exploring similar themes of artistic and athletic development\, sobriety and wellness. The events are open to the public and include a social run and an open discussion between artist and athlete. With these auxiliary events Sean’s intention is to shine a light on the people who have had great impact on him\, both in and out of the studio. \nUntil Friday November 24 \n‘Mindfulness Through Athleticism’ – Artist Talk & Run with Sean Atmos  \nFree event on Saturday November 11\, 10am-12noon.

SUMMARY:The Weight
DESCRIPTION:We’ve long admired work by Luca Truffarelli in all its guises whether it is his evocative photography or powerful video work with the likes of dancer and choreographer Oona Doherty. Movement\,  fluidity and grace are at the core of his offerings. Now with the world premiere of The Weight\, Truffarelli creates a new immersive dance work which explores ideas of freedom and the individualism of human beings…shining a spotlight on workers’ rights. With an orchestral backdrop specially composed by Greg Haines and recorded with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra\, The Weight was originally conceived with Doherty and developed with Swiss-based dancer Erin O’Reilly. \nA charitable donation of €2 will be made to Sea-Watch per ticket.

SUMMARY:How To Fall Flat on Your Face
DESCRIPTION:This is a story about healing. A journey into the mind of Anna (Katie Honan) who seeks perfection\, but falls flat on her face and ends up alone in a hospital corridor. A funny and dark deep dive into how ‘sweating the small stuff’ can escalate. By sharing our stories we connect\, we heal\, and we grow. \nThe play first premiered on International Women’s Day (2022) in Waterford’s Garter Lane Arts Centre\, receiving exceptional audience reaction and reviews and now hits Dublin’s Project Arts Centre this November.

SUMMARY:Oisín Davis - Irish Kitchen Cocktails
DESCRIPTION:Oisín’s infectious enthusiasm for the native drinks industry is well known to many in this city. He’s frequently rocked up to gatherings with his legendary punch bowls and now he may well come armed with his new book Irish Kitchen Cocktails. The tagline is\, ‘60 Drinks you can make at home with everyday equipment.’ Each cocktail comes with a little personal anecdote such as Vive Cum Gaudio – Latin for ‘Live With Joy’ – being tattooed on his left forearm (Hot Whiskey with Pear & Chestnut) with the flavour combo emerging from having a cannoli in Jersey City. There’s discoveries such Berrisimo & OJ (an Irish Berry apertif)\, Vodka Jelly shots made from Refreshers candy and a Killahora Medley which combines the best from these Orchards in Cork. It should be noted how gorgeous this book looks too so kudos to editor Kristin Jensen (Nine Bean Rows)\, design (Graham Thew)\, styling (Orla Nelligan) and photography (Jo Murphy). Did someone say Christmas stocking filler box ticked in October? \nNo booking required\, the book can be purchased for €18.

SUMMARY:Haunted Dancehall
DESCRIPTION:Seeing Oneohtrix Point Never deliver a visceral set in the Concert Hall as part of the inaugural Haunted Dancehall remains one of our favourite music experiences of 2022. One was able to bounce between rooms\, feeling all grown up\, flipping from saluting the likes of local hero Roger Doyle\, discovering Meitei or elegantly loosing it to Sunil Sharpe. Anyways\, it is back adding The Sugar Club and Anseo into the mix. Crash Ensemble will be performing Philip Glass’ Glassworks and Terry Riley’s In C\, Colombian experimental musician Lucrecia Dalt makes her debut here and acclaimed American Stockholm-based composer Kali Malone is over too. Maria Somerville returns to the stage\, Tirzah is turning up. Stacked with discoveries so start firing up your Spotify in advance.

SUMMARY:Beta
DESCRIPTION:Beta is a new festival of art and technology critically engaging with the impact of emerging technologies on society. Led by curator and creative producer Aisling Murray\, it will showcase and celebrate our research and artistic communities through a combination of creativity\, debate and experimentation. Beta will allow members of the public to engage playfully and critically with new technologies essentially beta testing ethical issues facing society. \nAcclaimed artists to participate in this year’s festival including Libby Heaney\, Leon Butler and Peter Power. \nTwo unique works have been commissioned to support the launch of Beta. Artist Leon Butler has imagined what the identity of a festival of art and technology could be and has generated a new font seen in the Beta logo. The final logo almost looks hand drawn or screen printed with beautifully imperfect edges – this intersection of cutting-edge technology and human creativity is exactly what Beta will explore with the festival. \nBeta’s website features a new commission from artist and designer Farouk Alao. Specialising in 3D motion and web design\, he has drawn inspiration from nature\, his world\, and human emotions. His vision explores the intersection of reality and imagination. The motion piece on Beta’s website\, called the Beta cube\, positions Beta as a centre point in which art\, technology and creativity resolve and makes use of the unique font designed by Butler. \nYou can view the events and exhibition which form part of Beta. The festival will take place November 2 – 5 with the opening night taking place at Roe & Co Distillery. The exhibition that opens as part of it continues in The Digital Hub and the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) for a further two weeks until November 19th. \n

SUMMARY:Hilary Woods
DESCRIPTION:“A fugue comprised of nine slow hypnotic dirges” is how Acts of Light\, Woods’ forthcoming album on Sacred Bones is described by her people. Woods continues her sonic excavations spanning field recordings in Spain\, strings in Oslo and the Palestrina choir in the Pro Cathedral. Where The Bough Has Broken\, the first single off the album\, is cunningly envisioned through RTÉ newsreel archives. “This video muses on the beauty of community and resilience\, made to a piece of music that celebrates connection and the specificity and transience of time\, space\, and human expression. This music video is a visual love letter to the Dublin City I grew up in\, to the spirit of familial roots and the extraordinary moments in ordinary life that leave their lasting impression\,” says Woods. She will be accompanied on these shows by pioneering and visionary drummer and percussionist Gabriel Ferrandini. \n

SUMMARY:Office for Joint Administrative Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:For the past seven years\, Irish artist Gary Farrelly’s practice has manifested as an artistic duo practice known as the Office for Joint Administrative Intelligence\, with German artist Chris Dreier. \nThis October marks their return to Dublin with two performances. The first\, hosted at the Hugh Lane has been commissioned by Padraic E Moore as part of the I’ll Be Your Mirror program—a response to the Andy Warhol exhibition. This piece delves into their distinct bureaucratic and ritualistic approach to hero worship. They’ll be activating office blocks real and imagined as ritualistic technologies within the performance’s framework. \nA week later\, they’ll be taking to the stage at the Alternating Currents Festival\, organized by Dublin Digital Radio\, where they’ve had a radio show on the station since 2020. This performance offers a rougher\, more manic aspect\, integrating sound archives\, a quiz show element\, and political fiction. \nHugh Lane\, Saturday October 21. \nCheck out our feature Bureau #304 – Gary Farrelly from 2016

SUMMARY:Red Umbrella Film Festival 2023
DESCRIPTION:A collective of current and former sex workers have organised Red Umbrella Film Festival\, Ireland’s first-ever sex worker film festival. \nThe festival will run from Thursday 19 until Sunday 22 October across four Dublin venues: Light House Cinema\, Unite the Union on Abbey Street\, Wigwam\, and the Grand Social. \n \nThe goal of the festival is to create conversation and community around the issues sex workers face in Ireland and internationally. By creating space for sex workers’ stories\, the festival organisers hope to challenge stigma and shame\, fight for the safety and self-determination of sex workers in Ireland\, and build towards a decriminalised future. \nThe festival launches on October 19 in the Light House cinema\, where Swedish writer and director Tove Pils will present the Irish premiere of their documentary LABOR (2023). Ten years in the making\, LABOR follows Hannah and her friends – dominatrix Chloe\, and escort Cyd\, in their journey of self-discovery through San Francisco’s vibrant queer scene. \n \nOther highlights of the festival include the European premiere of FLY IN POWER (2023)\, a documentary exploring the work of Red Canary Song\, a grassroots organisation of Asian and migrant sex workers and massage workers. The film will be followed by a panel discussion with the filmmakers. ALL THE BEAUTY AND THE BLOODSHED (2022) follows the life of artist and former sex worker Nan Goldin and showcases her role in the campaign against the Sackler family. \n \nThe festival’s short film programme will include HOUSE OF WHORESHIP (2023)\, a queer love story set in a suburban brothel by director Holly Bates\, and CALL ME MOMMY (2022)\, an intimate portrait of Irish sex worker and mother of four Sinéad\, followed by a Q&A. \nRed Umbrella Film Festival will also feature talks\, workshops on harm reduction and legal advice\, stripper bingo\, and a Saturday night event with burlesque\, comedy\, and pole dance performances. \nRED UMBRELLA FILM FESTIVAL 2023: IRELAND’S FIRST-EVER SEX WORKER FILM FESTIVAL Dublin\, Thursday 19 – Sunday 22 October \nIG: @redumbrellafilmfestival \nX: @redumbrellaff \nTickets via Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Thin Places: Clare Henderson & James Kirwan
DESCRIPTION:Clare makes work relating to memories and secret histories that are depicted by lands and seas in mists\, veils and ghostly figures. Now living in the West of Ireland\, Clare is making work further influenced by the local history\, lore and landscape of her new environment. \nJames’ work is rooted in the duality of the conscious and subconscious mind\, and our existence amid the natural world. His new body of work explores abstracted landscapes and forms through gathered imagery\, distorted through digital filters and altered media formats. Inspirations are rooted in paganism\, nature and the otherworldly. \nClare and James’ work is connected through their interest in the unknown\, of liminal spaces and a consideration of the land of Ireland and its mystical pre-histories and lore. \n \n‘Connemara 1’\, Monoprint\, 39cm x 27cm\, 2023\, Clare Henderson \n \nConnemara 3′\, Monoprint\, 39cm x 27cm\, 2023\, Clare Henderson \n \nAlone Wolf\, acrylic painting\, 60cm x 60cm\, 2023\, James Kirwan \nSO Fine Art Editions\, 2nd Floor Powerscourt Townhouse Centre. Arguably\, the best known and most influential artist of the 20th Century what fascinates us now is his appeal or relevance to a new TikTok-ified audience – will they care for his pop art? How well will Silver Clouds translate to Insta reels? It’s almost a comfort blanket of sorts for older generations as they embrace the soup cans and nod to Nixon. What actually caught our attention is the room in which his lesser known early drawings around love\, sex and desire are housed. They show the range of his talent from the get-go. His ‘Electric Chair’ series which dates back to 1963 still resonates – there’s a Xeroxed style replication which tightropes the viewer into questioning their relationship to the dark subject matter whilst appreciating his colourful pop take on it.

SUMMARY:Naomi Klein
DESCRIPTION:Doppelganger is the latest work of author\, social activist\, and filmmaker Naomi Klein. It starts off as an amusing look into the confusion and conflation which exists online between herself and Naomi Wolf. “Most confusingly\, my doppelganger and I once had distinct writerly lanes (hers being women’s bodies\, sexuality\, and leadership; mine being corporate assaults on democracy and the climate crisis). But over a decade ago\, she started talking and writing about power grabs under cover of states of emergency – and the once-sharp yellow line that divided those lanes began to go wobbly.” In the explorations\, Klein travels down the conspiracy rabbit hole discovering why millions of people have entered an alternative political reality. \nRDS\, Friday September 29

SUMMARY:Somewhere Out There You
DESCRIPTION:Nancy Harris’s new play fizzes and pops. It’s a comedy with heart and insight\, a story about love lost and love sought set against a backdrop of the city lit with nostalgic neon thrills such as the Happy Ring House and Why Go Bald? signs. Wayne Jordan directs an ensemble of talented actors primed to deliver their best and then some. This production goes for the grandiose\, including running time\, but it never stops wearing its heart on its sleeve and being sassy and fun.

SUMMARY:John Grant Sings The Songs of Patsy Cline
DESCRIPTION:An adopted son of these shores\, Grant is a constant presence in our midst whether he is acing a duet with CMAT in Where Are Your Kids Tonight or dropping by to play the Cline songbook. “Cline has stood the test of time\, and her music has influenced millions of people. She lived through a lot of heartache and you can really feel that in her songs – a really beautiful mixture of melancholy\, sweetness and strength\,” says Grant. \nWhile Walkin’ After Midnight\, I Fall to Pieces and Sweet Dreams (Of You) are her best known hits\, Grant selects If I Could Only Stay Asleep\, There He Goes and Leavin’ on Your Mind as some lesser known personal favourites. SUMMARY:Liz Magor | The Rise and the Fall
DESCRIPTION:A debut Irish solo show by renowned Canadian artist Liz Magor who more recently has worked with the likes of JW Anderson on his S/S 2020 collection. For over four decades\, Magor’s practice has primarily centred on sculpture\, exploring our persistent and complicated relationship with things. She divides objects into two categories “those that are provided by the world\, and those that I provide by making them in the studio.” Using casting processes akin to photography\, determining positives and negatives\, she renders familiar objects in her studio into gypsum or rubber and often in repetition. Combining found or discarded objects and cast or amended ones\, she unravels quotidian assumptions and desires. \nDouglas Hyde Gallery until Sunday September 24.

SUMMARY:Influence and Identity: Twentieth Century portrait photography from The Bank of America collection
DESCRIPTION:This is heavy-hitter territory when it comes to photographers and their subject matter. You have Richard Avedon shooting Groucho Marx and Ezra Pound\, Yousuf Karsh getting the likes of Churchill\, Einstein\, Costeau\, Ali\, Hemingway and Georgia O’Keeffe to stare down the lens. \nBernice Abbott framed the most instantly recognisable image of James Joyce back in 1925. However\, what turns out to be most compelling is actual seeing the faces of people we may know of but struggle to identify – Chagall (Kertesz)\, Miro (Brassai) and Mondrian (Newman) are such cases. And arguably one of the most affecting images is one where the face is turned the opposite way in the case of Karsh’s shot of cellist Pablo Cassals. Also\, make sure to pop into the basement to catch Kevin Atherton’s witty video installation – In Two Minds.  \nIMMA until October 8

SUMMARY:Jeff Mills presents Tomorrow Comes the Harvest
DESCRIPTION:Tomorrow Comes the Harvest: Throw came about when the late afrobeat legend Tony Allen linked up with techno pioneer Jeff Mills to cross-pollinate their sounds in 2018 and see what happened. Sadly\, Allen shuffled off this mortal coil in 2020. Mills has persisted with the project bringing in tabla player Prabhu Edouard and keyboardist Jean-Phi Dary to fill the void ahead of an album release at the start of September. SUMMARY:DÉAD
DESCRIPTION:DÉAD (Irish for ‘set of teeth’) draws on immersive technologies to celebrate the legacy of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula and Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau’s classic silent film Nosferatu. Through virtual reality (VR) installations\, 3D animations\, video projections\, sculptures and more\, a new exhibition brings vampires\, monsters and the undead to the Goethe. ‘Deathlocked Phoenix’ (photo) consists of an animated short film by Adrian Q. Vardi (HGB Leipzig) and a projection of a generative algorithm that reacts to the film\, created by Manuel McCarthy (UL). The film is presented as a video loop that depicts the futile efforts of a virtual vampire to escape immortality and embrace death. \nGoethe-Institut\, Friday September 22 until Friday October 27.

SUMMARY:Persona Metropolitana
DESCRIPTION:A new piece by Annachiara Vispi & Giulia Macrì\, premiering at Dublin Fringe Festival this September. \nThis is Giulia. \nLike 55% of us\, Giulia lives in a city. \nIt is predicted that by 2050\, almost 70% of us will live in a city – two thirds of the people on the planet. \nGiulia wonders if we’ll all fit. \nGiulia doubts it. \nThe world is undergoing the largest wave of urban growth in history. Cities are busy\, chaotic\, dirty\, and difficult. But they are also places of freedom\, possibilities\, and new experiences. \nCan we rethink how we feel in cities? In changing how we feel in a city\, can we reshape our communities? \nA one-of-a-kind cross-cultural project\, Persona Metropolitana was created in Rome\, where it enjoyed two sold-out runs in January and June this year. \nA dance show\, a live concert\, a poetry night\, a video art exhibition – Persona Metropolitana is a patchwork of life in different cities. It’s a rave in a metro and a party on the Luas. With innovative\, integrated video footage and original electronic music\, this will be an uncategorisable experience that seeks solace in community and creativity. \nIn cities we feel invisible\, Giulia thinks. \nOr free. \nSmock Alley Theatre Black Box\, Exchange St Lower\, Temple Bar\, Dublin 8 \nPreview: 19 September @ 21:15 // €11 \nShows: 20-23 September @ 21:15 // €12/14 \nMatinee: 23 September @ 13:30// €12/14 \nBook:  https://www.fringefest.com/festival/whats-on/persona-metropolitana \nTel: 1800 374 643 \nDuration: Approx. 60 mins \n  \nABOUT ANNACHIARA VISPI & GIULIA MACRÌ \nAnnachiara Vispi is a director and writer based between Dublin and Rome. Her work focuses on questioning what is considered familiar and natural to imagine new ways of being. Last year\, she directed and co-created Pig Brain\, which enjoyed a sold out run at Dublin Fringe 2022. \nGiulia Macrì is a dancer and performer based in Rome. She has worked with international choreographers such as Antonin Comestaz\, Sofia Nappi\, Mauro Astolfi\, and Kristian Lever. Her practice focuses on using the body as a self-contained tool for communication\, and on how it connects with and expands other art forms. \nAnnachiara and Giulia met in 2021 in Rome\, and have been collaborating ever since. They aim to create work that is entertaining\, uncategorisable\, thought-provoking\, experimental. \nAlongside Persona Metropolitana\, they are currently developing Sei la fine del mondo (letteralmente)\, a piece connecting gender-based violence to climate change and capitalism. \n  \nCAST & CREW \nCreated by Annachiara Vispi and Giulia Macrì \nWith Giulia Macrì and Ciara Berkeley \nWritten and directed by Annachiara Vispi \nChoreographed by Giulia Macrì \nSet and costume design by Freya Gillespie \nLighting design by Owen Clarke \nAV design by Hannah Bloom \nSound design and composition by Lorenzo Saini \nStage and production managed by Jack Shanley \nProduced by Signe Lury \nDeveloped at FRINGE LAB with the support of Dublin Fringe Festival. \nInstagram: @personametropolitana \nTwitter: @personametro

SUMMARY:Howardena Pindell: Renewed Language
DESCRIPTION:After the sensational retrospective of Patricia Hurl this spring\, the West Wing in IMMA continues to shine a light of elderly women who work needs to be hailed in life rather than death. Renewed Language represents the first exhibition here of artist\, activist\, and educator Howardena Pindell. \nPrimarily an abstract painter who faced criticism in the late ‘60s\, “the feeling was\, the work should be about the Black experience.” This minimalism beckons you to look closer for subtle reveals which one can freely interpret as they wish. Pindell became the first Black woman to become a curator at (MoMA) in the 1970s where she worked for a decade before resigning. In video work such as Free\, White and 21 (1980)\, Pindell pivots to confront racial discrimination more pointedly. Elsewhere\, she addresses AIDS\, how racism intersects with power structures and the climate crisis. At 80\, Pindell is still responding to the concerns of our times\, challenging us all to reflect and think. \nIMMA until October 1

SUMMARY:Peter McGann - Great Lad
DESCRIPTION:McGann is one of the new wave of comics who seems to have made a breakthrough on instagram over lockdown. And he’s been gaining significant traction of late. One recent sketch of his\, ‘A man has a bleak epiphany sending a voicenote to a radio show’ is utterly perfection in one minute and 25 seconds. What seems like a pointless novelty input quickly curdles\, spiralling into reflection and regret. It truly is a masterclass in pointed black humour with its everyman relatability regarding the slow trap of life. Rest assured he brings the lolz to a live setting. \nVicar Street\, Friday September 15\, €25

SUMMARY:Banbha McCann: Domestic Bliss
DESCRIPTION:Continuing their Artist-Initiated Projects program at Pallas\, Domestic Bliss reflects on the desire for a home\, and how to make one. We are told the work in this exhibition\, “blurs the lines between the personal and universal\, image and object\, memory and desire. Paintings of domestic interiors are sourced from the collective memory and imagination; the aspirational homes of Home Alone and Mrs. Doubtfire. \n \nTextiles and sculptures juxtapose the canon of modern design with childhood memories of life in a bedsit\, where objects take on the role of an entire room; the tv\, the microwave\, and the bed\, the potted plant as a garden. These real and imagined places and objects describe the places we live\, and the home we carry around in our heads.” \nPallas Projects/Studios\, opens Thursday September 14 and runs to Saturday September 30. \nbanbhamccann.com

SUMMARY:Shahid شَـاهِد - Diaa Lagan and Basil Al-Rawi
DESCRIPTION:In Arabic\, Shahid means ‘witness’ – someone who observes\, but also someone who hears and encounters experiences in their unconscious. Through a variety of artforms and visual methodologies\, the artists use the gallery to organise their combined meditative observation\, which moves from significant cultural and mythical references\, as well as references from vernacular traditions\, to imaginary landscapes and personal reminiscences. The complex layering of legacies\, memories\, identities\, all fusing into a unique self\, augmented by the plurality of influences\, is presented here in a mosaic of deeply rooted forms. \nThe Lab\, Foley Street\, until December 4.

SUMMARY:Feist
DESCRIPTION:Last time we had Feist round these parts\, she was stepping away from a support slot with Arcade Fire (remember them?) after a flurry of sexual assault accusations against Win Butler emerged. Thankfully\, she is back on her own terms bringing her latest release Multitudes in tow. It’s a quieter affair than previous efforts\, one born of out the experience of becoming a parent and losing one. Recording with a digital eight-track recorder and nylon string guitar reflects the intimacy she brings to this release which slowly builds into beauts such as Borrow Trouble which will segue into the clutch of stratospheric hits off her 2007 breakthrough album The Reminder. \n \nNational Concert Stadium\, Wednesday September 6.
