SUMMARY:Paula Pohli: CONNEXIONS
DESCRIPTION:CONNEXIONS: Sidewalks is an exhibition created by artist Paula Pohli about ‘Walking’\, that is\, walking the sidewalks of Dublin. The prints and paintings in CONNEXIONS were inspired by Dublin City. In particular\, Paula connects places in Dublin to James Joyce’s books. \nPaula Pohli\, an artist\, walks in Dublin. She is not a Flâneur. She walks as an artist walks: looks\, observes\, experiences. This exhibition is her personal visual record of graphic images of Dublin City. Both an artist and author\, James Joyce was born in Dublin and both are and were great walkers. On her Dublin walks she connected the smells and the feel of the city to some of James Joyce’s literary works. \n‘I was born in Dublin. I moved into the north inner city in Dublin about 2006. The energetic and visual impact of Dublin life and Liffey-life excited my imagination. I read ‘Ulysses’ to educate and enhance my visual experience of walking around Dublin City. I\, as an artist discovered my very own Dublin and I created prints mostly of what city life presented to me on my walks.’ \nThe artist enjoys walking and exploring the sidewalks of Dublin; walking from Grafton Street on the South side to The Dublin Spire on the North side is her focal point. \nDublin Only is near O’Connell Bridge in the city centre\nBorn in Dublin Paula Pohli lives in rural Ireland. She travels extensively and her travels confirm to her that ‘her’ Dublin and James Joyce’s ‘Dublin’ are still active and ‘alive\, alive O’. It is of course a New Dublin. Paula is a cyclist too. She biked it to Bull Island and Dublin Port. Paula has a tendency to look downwards and sideways down the sidewalks of Dublin. After rain the sidewalks of Dublin smell different. She looks at coal lids and covers. She looks down laneways: ‘Moland Place’ (linocut). The artist looks downwards into the Liffey: ‘Dublin\, only’ is a painting that captures the seaweed curtains that drape the Liffey walls\, but only at low tide. ‘Poddle into Liffey’ is a linocut of two rivers meeting one another: the Poddle and the Liffey. This a connection to Thomas Moore’s poem\,  ‘The Meeting of the Waters’ and Joyce referenced it in Ulysses. \n\nOnly at Low Tide is out at the Bull Wall in Dollymount\n\nIn Ulysses\, Joyce called Sparrows ‘hopping mice’. The sparrows in her Sparrows painting pestered Paula in Mayo for food. She connected them to Joyce. Paula smiled as she painted the sparrows in egg tempera. Joyce wrote: ‘Sparrows look like hopping mice’. Food features in Joyce’s books. Bloom’s breakfast is an olfactory reading experience for Paula Pohli. \nFinally\, the artist does look upwards. The Dublin Spire drew her artistic eye upwards to the Dublin sky:  she created a linocut of the Spire\, Dublin Apparition.  This print won third prize in an International Print Biennial in the Centre for Contemporary Printmaking in Connecticut in the US. Her mini prints featured in over 30-40 International Mini Print Biennials in the US\, UK\, Bulgaria\, Egypt\, Germany\, etc. She has had many solo shows in Dublin\, in Ireland\, as well as in Holland and Germany. Paula’s prints and paintings are in the National Gallery of Ireland\, in Dublin. \nPaula does not philosophise about Dublin. She makes prints and paintings of Dublin City for its own sake.  However\, the artist is deeply grateful to James Joyce for spending his lifetime writing about Dublin. \nCONNEXIONS II in 2024\, will be about country walks and rural wildlife. \nCONNEXIONS\, an exhibition primarily of Linocuts\, some egg tempera and brush drawings on paper by Paula Pohli is at The James Joyce Centre\, 35 North Great Georges Street\, Dublin D01 WK44. \nThis exhibition continues into 2024 and can be viewed from Monday to Saturday between 10 am to 4pm. \nFeature Image: Finn’s Hotel is where James Joyce met Nora \nAll images by Paula Pohli

SUMMARY:John Kindness - The Odyssey
DESCRIPTION:Kindness describes himself as an “artist\, currently completing a visual version of Homer’s Odyssey”. He enjoys working with objects which have been through “the patina of usage” and uses traditional methods such as mosaic and fresco painting to explore contemporary themes and defy conventional notions of the fine art object – the hazards of Scylla and Charybdis are engraved onto a toilet seat\, Odysseus’s teenage son listens to albums by ‘The Sirens’ and ‘The Gorgons’. In his mimicking of the visual styles of Ancient Greek vase-painting\, he suggests that the residues of contemporary life will be the artefacts of the future.

SUMMARY:Christmas Carols
DESCRIPTION:Tis the season to pour some mulled wine and indulge one of the finest traditions. One of the reasons Christmas carols bring such a sense of consolation and connection is surely their familiarity. Most of us have sung them since our primary school days. We pride ourselves on knowing the words. As the word carol – a joyful song – suggests\, carols bring us together and connect us in groups of shared experience and feelings. The grand 19th Century congregational numbers – O Come All Ye Faithful for instance – is a rousing hymn of communal praise. Here are some which you can listen to or sing to your heart’s content. \n‘Peace on Earth’ Christmas Carols at Christ Church Cathedral with the St Mary’s College Singers\, Saturday December 2\, 8pm – 9.15pm\, €25. \nChristmas Carol Concert for Cancer Research\, Trinity College Chapel\, Tuesday December 5\, 6pm-7.30pm\, €30. \nNew Dublin Voices\, Christchurch Cathedral\, Saturday December 9\, 8pm\, €20/€25. \n‘Joy to the World’ Glória LGBT+ Choir\, St Andrew’s Church\, Friday December 15\, 7.30pm\, €20/€25.

SUMMARY:National Symphony Orchestra and Marin Alsop: Beethoven\, Rouse and Stravinsky
DESCRIPTION:One of the foremost conductors of our time\, Marin Alsop makes her much anticipated return to the National Symphony Orchestra on 1st December with Beethoven’s vivid opera-in-miniature\, Leonore Overture No 3\, and the raw elemental punch of and power of Stravinsky’s history-making masterpiece\, The Rite of Spring. \nAlsop has been credited with shattering the glass ceiling for female conductors. She is the first woman to serve as the head of a major orchestra in the United States\, South America\, Austria and Britain. She made history as the first female musical conductor of London’s Last Night of the Proms ten years ago\, and recently became the first woman and the first American to guest conduct three Last Nights in the festival’s 128-year history. \n \nAlsop is a dedicated and vocal champion of emerging talent and\, during her time in Dublin\, she will lead a weeklong conducting masterclass at the National Concert Hall with eight of the world’s most promising young conductors (26 Nov – 1 Dec). In advance on her concert with the NSO on 1st December\, members of the public have an opportunity to watch her at work during one of the masterclasses (1.30pm on Tuesday\, 28th November). SUMMARY:Morag Myerscough with The Local Community in Tallaght - A Good Night’s Sleep
DESCRIPTION:We first encountered the work of Morag Myerscough on these shores when the late John Reynolds brought the UK artist over to create the Together Bandstand for the inaugural edition of All Together Now in 2018. “John loved my ‘Temple of Agape’ and I wanted to make a new piece of work that was unique to his new festival\,” said Morag. \nNow she returns with A Good Night’s Sleep – a bold\, colourful\, immersive intervention which is the culmination of over ten months working with the Irish Refugee Council’s Youth Service\, DoubleTake Studio\, New Horizon HUB\, and the Tallaght Ukrainian community to explore the multifaceted theme of ‘belonging’. \nThe participants shared their hopes and dreams\, fears and struggles in workshops led by the artist. The groups connected using the power of colour\, word\, and sound to express themselves. \nRua Red until March 3.

SUMMARY:The Exorcist
DESCRIPTION:Slaughterhouse start their ‘Winter of Despair’ season with a 50th anniversary screening of The Exorcist. William Friedkin\, who bade farewell to us this summer\, directed this classic which became the first horror film to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. Many of The Exorcist‘s cast and crew members believed the set was cursed. After a number of eerie incidents on the New York City set\, including a studio fire Friedkin regularly brought in a priest\, Father King\, to bless the cast\, crew\, and set. By the end of the film’s production\, nine people associated with its making had passed away. \nA Q&A follows it with director Kate Dolan (You Are Not My Mother)\, comedian Peter McGann and Aran from the ClassHorrorCast.

SUMMARY:Cursed Murphy Versus the Resistance
DESCRIPTION:This mob are one of the most intense\, full-on\, rub you up the right/wrong way live acts around. Punk poetry parlando\, with driving rhythms and industrial dirt. Art rock\, but not arty (OK\, maybe a bit)\, they like their Iggy & the Stooges\, their Velvet Underground\, Leonard Cohen\, Sonic Youth\, Patti\, PJ\, Neu!\, you name it. \nThey’re a mongrel bunch\, for sure. Guitarist Dan does dirty as well as drones. Johnny switches from sci-fi keyboards to rotten noise guitar\, pedal boards everywhere. The rhythm section is an octopus: Paul and Harvey and the Gangnus sisters Rebecca and Jasmin. Jas also played loads of violin on the last record. \nThe troupe are fronted by writer and spoken-word mouth almighty Peter Murphy\, author of the novels John the Revelator and Shall We Gather at the River (Faber). In September 2021 the band embarked on a German mini-tour\, playing Wuppertal and Berlin as part of the travelling Here/There exhibition\, supported by Culture Ireland. They followed this with a sold-out show in Wexford Opera House with guests Basciville and poet Stephen James Smith\, plus a collaborative EP\, Tell It to A Tree. \n \nCursed Murphy Versus the Resistance released their second album\, Republic of the Weird\, in November 2022. A more divergent piece of work\, using electronics and folk overtones and string arrangements\, it sounded future-shocked and rather beautiful in parts\, in the same way a volcanic eruption or an oil spill is beautiful. It produced a slew of singles: ‘Hold That Line’\, ‘Republic of the Weird’\, and ‘This Is Not Your Love Song’\, the latter an industrial-disco banger somewhere between Leonard and Trent Reznor\, co-written and co-produced with Basciville. \nBefore we let you go\, you’ll be needing to hear what some nice folk wrote about them. Hot Press dubbed them “avant-garde adventurers from Wexford”\, which made them sound fierce cool altogether\, and voted Republic of the Weird the spoken word album of 2022 (even though it’s not really a spoken word album\, but never look a gift horse etc…). Among their peers\, their most vocal admirers include Undertone Paul McLoone\, Cathy from Pillow Queens\, the lads from Sons of Southern Ulster\, novelist Donal Ryan and one-time Cramps bass-player and general alt. legend Fur Dixon. See below for a brag wall’s worth of quotes.

SUMMARY:Gig for Gaza
DESCRIPTION:The humanitarian horrors which are unfolding in Palestine are beyond harrowing. Besides the calls for an immediate ceasefire\, the war being waged has not just elicited sympathy and condemnation but also spurred on artists to come together to aid a shattered people. There are countless fundraisers on the go but the Gig for Gaza is the big one. Lankum\, Damien Dempsey\, Lisa O’Neill and The Mary Wallopers will all take to the stage for a concert with all net proceeds going to Medical Aid for Palestinians. A poster for the gig designed by Selkies and screen-printed by Damn Fine Print will be available from Bang Bang in Phibsborough and at the gig itself\, priced at €30. This will be the first of a number of gigs and events around Ireland under the ‘Irish Artists for Palestine’ Group that will take place from November 28 to December 3 with full listings available on irishartistsforpalestine.com. Bit of a shame that Ticketmaster didn’t waive or donate fees on this.

SUMMARY:Yves Tumor
DESCRIPTION:“And the reason I think we’re a good match is because you’re disagreeable and I’m disagreeable and we’re both incredibly othered and you don’t seem to have much of an interest in being fucking warm\, fuzzy\, and user-friendly…You’re already leaning into the fucking othered. You’re occupying spaces that – I’ve been there as a woman – are traditionally held by a certain type of person that isn’t us.” This extract is from Courtney Love’s fangirl interview with Yves for Interview this spring\, one of two he has done in the last five years. The reviews for his latest release Praise a Lord Who Chews But Which Does Not Consume have been fulsome with praise – “seeking the mysterious nexus where Loveless meets Purple Rain” (Pitchfork)\, “a deranged beckoning into a free space” (NPR). Tumor also revealed his love for a genre called extratone\, “it’s basically techno\, but the bpm is sped up to a thousand. It sounds like a humming sound.” \n \n

SUMMARY:The Quare Fellow
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate a century since Brendan Behan’s birth\, the Abbey Theatre presents this modern take on The Quare Fellow\, directed by Tom Creed. Having premiered at the Pike Theatre in 1954 under the direction of Alan Simpson\, this modern classic was first produced at the Abbey in 1956 (Ernest Blythe turned it down originally) and has not been staged there since 1984. It unfolds over the timeframe between the arrival in a prison (based on Mountjoy Jail) of an unnamed man who we never see\, condemned to death for the murder of his brother\, and his execution\, with which the play ends. The top notch cast of 15\, all female and non-binary actors\, will perform all of the male characters\, continuing Behan’s legacy of subversion\, surprise and confrontation.

SUMMARY:Johnny Jewel
DESCRIPTION:You might have seen Drive\, caught the Chromatics at Forbidden Fruit or Vicar Street\, watched the Twin Peaks reboot\, listened to a remix of The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights or simply know Italians Do It Better (the record label). If you have\, you’ve been in the presence of Johnny Jewel and his Midas touch. In many ways his evocative urban synth pop sound came to define the post Drive era spilling into the likes of Stranger Things and beyond. His latest single The Witch is from the soundtrack to forthcoming horror film Holly and straight out of the John Carpenter playbook. “I never have to motivate myself to work\,” Jewel told the Guardian before debuting this show at Christine and the Queens Meltdown festival this summer. “I never get tired of it. It’s therapy\, it’s meditation\, it’s trance\, it’s inner space\, it’s the greatest feeling. The possibilities are infinite and it’s impossible to be satiated.”

SUMMARY:The Perfect Immigrant: Groundbreaking new play Shines A light on challenges faced by young migrants
DESCRIPTION:From the struggles of job hunting and navigating Ireland’s dating scene to searching for red chilli peppers in Lucan\, this timely one-man show is a heartfelt and hilarious exploration of the challenges faced by those in search of a brighter future. \nThePerfect Immigrant revolves around Levi\, a courageous young Nigerian man who leaves his homeland\, with three worn suitcases\, to fulfill his dream of studying engineering in a foreign land. Samuel Yakura describes how parts of the show are autobiographical: “The story is about a young adult navigating manhood\, loneliness\, and self-discovery in a foreign place. The piece draws\, in part\, from my own experiences as a migrant. Similar to the show’s protagonist\, I came to Ireland in 2018 to pursue a masters in civil engineering. The piece is quite different from a traditional theatre show. We tell Levi’s story through a powerful mix of poetry\, prose\, and with an Irish-Nigerian sense of humour that will entertain and resonate with audiences of all backgrounds”. \nFor native Irish audiences\, The Perfect Immigrant provides a unique insight into the cultural challenges of migration. Yakura believes that stories like these will also encourage more minority cultures to engage with Ireland’s theatre and arts scene. \n“Ireland is undergoing a transformative journey towards becoming a thriving\, multicultural society. However\, there is a noticeable lack of representation in the arts and in audience attendance. By sharing stories like The Perfect Immigrant on stage\, we hope to encourage minority cultures to explore the vibrant world of theatre and arts in Ireland. Personally\, my journey as a poet has been enriched by coming here. I would encourage the general theatre community but also those outsiders to come and experience this inspiring show”. \nFollowing an award-winning premiere at last year’s Dublin Fringe Festival\, “The Perfect Immigrant” written and performed by poet and playwright Samuel Yakura and directed by Katie O’Halloran will tour theatre venues across Ireland this November. As part of this  nation-wide tour\, the play will be at The Civic Theatre\, Tallaght 9th-11th November and Mermaid Arts Centre\, Bray on 25th November. \nFeature Image: Nigerian poet and playwright Samuel Yakura photographed at Dublin’s Liberty Lane as he performs a scene from his new show “The Perfect Immigrant”. SUMMARY:Sean Atmos - Alternative Paths
DESCRIPTION:Sean Atmos is a Dublin based visual artist well known for his large-scale murals & engaging canvas works. Coming from a background in graffiti\, Sean began his creative journey in 2006 & has been developing his practice since. Sean uses a base of typography in his work. He abstracts the rigid forms of lettering\, to create a geometric landscape for viewers to decode. \n \n‘Alternative Paths’ is an evolution of Sean’s signature style and primarily takes shape through vibrant hand painted typographic overlays. Sean’s personal narrative is subtly woven throughout the work\, exploring the parallels between his creative process and athletic pursuits. \nAs an avid runner\, Sean has curated a series of engagement events at Atelier Now exploring similar themes of artistic and athletic development\, sobriety and wellness. The events are open to the public and include a social run and an open discussion between artist and athlete. With these auxiliary events Sean’s intention is to shine a light on the people who have had great impact on him\, both in and out of the studio. \nUntil Friday November 24 \n‘Mindfulness Through Athleticism’ – Artist Talk & Run with Sean Atmos  \nFree event on Saturday November 11\, 10am-12noon.

SUMMARY:Oisín Davis - Irish Kitchen Cocktails
DESCRIPTION:Oisín’s infectious enthusiasm for the native drinks industry is well known to many in this city. He’s frequently rocked up to gatherings with his legendary punch bowls and now he may well come armed with his new book Irish Kitchen Cocktails. The tagline is\, ‘60 Drinks you can make at home with everyday equipment.’ Each cocktail comes with a little personal anecdote such as Vive Cum Gaudio – Latin for ‘Live With Joy’ – being tattooed on his left forearm (Hot Whiskey with Pear & Chestnut) with the flavour combo emerging from having a cannoli in Jersey City. There’s discoveries such Berrisimo & OJ (an Irish Berry apertif)\, Vodka Jelly shots made from Refreshers candy and a Killahora Medley which combines the best from these Orchards in Cork. It should be noted how gorgeous this book looks too so kudos to editor Kristin Jensen (Nine Bean Rows)\, design (Graham Thew)\, styling (Orla Nelligan) and photography (Jo Murphy). Did someone say Christmas stocking filler box ticked in October? \nNo booking required\, the book can be purchased for €18.

SUMMARY:Beta
DESCRIPTION:Beta is a new festival of art and technology critically engaging with the impact of emerging technologies on society. Led by curator and creative producer Aisling Murray\, it will showcase and celebrate our research and artistic communities through a combination of creativity\, debate and experimentation. Beta will allow members of the public to engage playfully and critically with new technologies essentially beta testing ethical issues facing society. \nAcclaimed artists to participate in this year’s festival including Libby Heaney\, Leon Butler and Peter Power. \nTwo unique works have been commissioned to support the launch of Beta. Artist Leon Butler has imagined what the identity of a festival of art and technology could be and has generated a new font seen in the Beta logo. The final logo almost looks hand drawn or screen printed with beautifully imperfect edges – this intersection of cutting-edge technology and human creativity is exactly what Beta will explore with the festival. \nBeta’s website features a new commission from artist and designer Farouk Alao. Specialising in 3D motion and web design\, he has drawn inspiration from nature\, his world\, and human emotions. His vision explores the intersection of reality and imagination. The motion piece on Beta’s website\, called the Beta cube\, positions Beta as a centre point in which art\, technology and creativity resolve and makes use of the unique font designed by Butler. \nYou can view the events and exhibition which form part of Beta. The festival will take place November 2 – 5 with the opening night taking place at Roe & Co Distillery. The exhibition that opens as part of it continues in The Digital Hub and the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) for a further two weeks until November 19th. \n

SUMMARY:Hilary Woods
DESCRIPTION:“A fugue comprised of nine slow hypnotic dirges” is how Acts of Light\, Woods’ forthcoming album on Sacred Bones is described by her people. Woods continues her sonic excavations spanning field recordings in Spain\, strings in Oslo and the Palestrina choir in the Pro Cathedral. Where The Bough Has Broken\, the first single off the album\, is cunningly envisioned through RTÉ newsreel archives. “This video muses on the beauty of community and resilience\, made to a piece of music that celebrates connection and the specificity and transience of time\, space\, and human expression. This music video is a visual love letter to the Dublin City I grew up in\, to the spirit of familial roots and the extraordinary moments in ordinary life that leave their lasting impression\,” says Woods. SUMMARY:Office for Joint Administrative Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:For the past seven years\, Irish artist Gary Farrelly’s practice has manifested as an artistic duo practice known as the Office for Joint Administrative Intelligence\, with German artist Chris Dreier. \nThis October marks their return to Dublin with two performances. The first\, hosted at the Hugh Lane has been commissioned by Padraic E Moore as part of the I’ll Be Your Mirror program—a response to the Andy Warhol exhibition. This piece delves into their distinct bureaucratic and ritualistic approach to hero worship. They’ll be activating office blocks real and imagined as ritualistic technologies within the performance’s framework. \nA week later\, they’ll be taking to the stage at the Alternating Currents Festival\, organized by Dublin Digital Radio\, where they’ve had a radio show on the station since 2020. This performance offers a rougher\, more manic aspect\, integrating sound archives\, a quiz show element\, and political fiction. \nHugh Lane\, Saturday October 21. \nCheck out our feature Bureau #304 – Gary Farrelly from 2016
