SUMMARY:PALIMPSEST by Coiscéim Dance Theatre
DESCRIPTION:CoisCéim founder David Bolger has consistently produced work of verve and daring since forming the dance company in 1995 and this looks like quintessential CoisCéim – an exhilarating\, boundary busting kaleidoscope of dance\, live music\, and panoramic projection woven together into a visceral audience experience. \nPALIMPSEST layers artforms and histories in a large-scale live performance to trace and own the ghostly-edged histories our shadows leave behind. SUMMARY:An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl)
DESCRIPTION:Seachtain na Gaeilge sees an opportunity to see An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl) with a special screening at The Chester Beatty Library. The award-winning film\, set in rural Ireland in the early 1980s\, tells the story of nine-year-old Cáit who is sent to spend the summer with a relative\, Eibhlín\, and her husband Seán. With her neglectful parents and an overcrowded\, chaotic home\, Cáit is a cautious and watchful child. Everything slowly changes that summer: unlike her parents’ farm\, this one is orderly and well-maintained\, while Eibhlín and Seán are attentive and thoughtful – even if Seán is somewhat distant at first. They offer her routine and most of all\, loving care\, which helps the girl to open up and enjoy her childhood. But like most good things in life\, this too must come to an end… \n \n13A (2022)\, 94 minutes. \nIrish with English subtitles. FREE\, no booking required. \nRead our review of An Cailín Ciúin here

SUMMARY:Shorelines: Dublin Painting and Sketching Club
DESCRIPTION:The Dublin Painting and Sketching Club (DPSC) marks its 150th anniversary with Shorelines\, a gorgeous new exhibition celebrating the history of the club\, and the vibrant culture of traditional art practice focusing on maritime subjects in Dublin today. Founded by renowned maritime painters Dr William Booth Pearsall FRCSI and Alexander Williams RHA\, the club has a long history of capturing and documenting life along Dublin’s shorelines. Past members of the historic club include Nathaniel Hone\, John Butler Yeats and Bram Stoker\, and in the late 19th century\, members would frequently take to the Iris\, a shallow-draft yacht owned by member George Prescott\, to sketch\, paint and photograph along the Poolbeg Peninsula\, in often perilous weather conditions. \nIn keeping with that tradition\, Shorelines chronicles the varied seascapes of Dublin through brand-new work which brings an immediacy to the life of the sea across paintings\, etchings and sculpture. \nKathrine Geoghegan Bull Island Tangle 60x60cm\nThis exhibition is the latest in a dynamic calendar of programming at The Substation\, a venue for exhibitions\, events\, lectures and performances. It follows the success of Solidarity: The Dockers of Dublin Port\, an exhibition on the subculture of the dockers curated by The Little Museum of Dublin. \nAidan Hickey Fish below the Kish\nShorelines runs from March 8th to 20th at The Substation on Alexandra Road\, courtesy of the Dublin Painting and Sketching Club and Dublin Port Company (DPC).   \nIt is open to the public from 11am-4pm\, Monday-Saturday\, and admission is free. \nFeatured Image: Dave West\, High Tide\, Balbriggan Harbour

A take on the play infused with Sean Nós\, performed in Irish with English subtitles\, it is a work that takes pride in presenting these niche interests to a broad audience in a compelling way. \nSuch an opportunity to support the arts\, the history of the arts and our native tongue rarely presents itself\, and is not to be missed. \nWednesday 6 March – Saturday 6 April\, on the Peacock Stage at The Abbey Theatre\, €22 – €25

SUMMARY:Kenny Morris - A Banshee Left Wailing
DESCRIPTION:Now residing in Cork\, Londoner Kenny Morris was at the epicentre of the creative maelstrom that was punk in the mid-1970s. In 1976\, he was the drummer in Sid Vicious’s The Flowers of Romance\, and he rose to fame as the drummer for Siouxsie and the Banshees from 1977 to 1979\, imbuing their sound with his unprecedented technique. An attendee for one year at London’s Camberwell School of Art in 1976\, Morris left to join Siouxsie for three whirlwind years before returning to his fine art cravings while also studying film. He worked with the video/filmmaker John Maybury (Pet Shop Boys West End Girls and Sinead O’Connor’s Nothing Compares To You videos and Love Is the Devil: Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon\, The Jacket\, The Edge of Love) before his own short film\, La Main Morte\, premiered at the International Berlin Film Festival in 1986 and was screened at many other European festivals. \nSince moving to Cork in 2010\, Kenny has held several exhibitions there and in Waterford\, including five of his short films and improvised musical performances with his group\, The Modern Raze. The current show is his first in Dublin. \nA Banshee Left Wailing\, the title of this exhibition\, is also the title of Kenny’s forthcoming memoir\, which is as much about art\, music\, and subculture as his life experiences from childhood to the present. \ngalleryx.ie \nKenny Morris\, A Banshee Left Wailing is at Gallery X\, 11 Hume Street\, Dublin from March 1- \nImage Credit – Silvio Severino\n \n

SUMMARY:Glasshouse perform Ryuichi Sakamoto
DESCRIPTION:We watched Coda on MUBI recently. This documentary celebrated the remarkable legacy of composer Ryuichi Sakamoto exploring his life and work\, offering a fascinating glimpse into the artistic process of the renowned musician who passed away in March 2023. Best known for the soundtrack to Merry Christmas\, Mr Lawrence and being a founding member of Tokyo’s pioneering computer-pop trio Yellow Magic Orchestra\, Sakamoto had a prolific career composing soundtracks for the likes of Alejandro G Iñárritu and a beautiful final album 12 which was recorded during hospital stays. Glasshouse will perform a new arrangement of Sakamoto’s work adding this extra date after the first one before Christmas sold out.

SUMMARY:Future Academies: Electronic Sheep
DESCRIPTION:Electronic Sheep was established in 1998 by NCAD alumni and multi-disciplinary artists Brenda Aherne and Helen Delany. The duo’s distinct approach comprises drawings and typographic jacquards based on narrative storylines based on their personal lives and professional practices. \nTheir approach sees them regularly working with artists\, historians and activists\, often to the benefit of social initiatives and charitable agencies. This makes them the ideal guests for the current series of talks at The RHA referencing many of the initial values of the academy\, such as community\, collectivity and belonging to a group\, in looking at new models of artist collectives or communities of interest. \nFree. SUMMARY:Sign Crushes Motorist
DESCRIPTION:Sign Crushes Motorist is a slowcore-influenced project of Northern Irish artist Liam McCay\, who is 18 years-old. Yes\, you read that right. Liam has two albums out to date – 2022’s I’ll Be Ok and 2023’s – Hurting. Inspired by the work of U.S. outfit Duster\, McCay’s warm\, lo-fi sound has found acclaim via TikTok trends like “corecore” or “nichetok”. SUMMARY:James Goldsbury
DESCRIPTION:James Goldsbury describes 2023 as an incredible milestone for him. He wasn’t invited to any of the major summer festivals which gave him ample time to refurbish his kitchen\, reef up the carpet on his stairs and re-lay his patio. The diary for February was originally looking a little light\, so now he’s bringing his stand-up show to Whelans on February 7th 2024\, where plans include jogging with a bag of dog shite. Allegedly.  Support on the night is from the always brilliant Eve Darcy. \n

SUMMARY:Daniel Sloss - Can’t
DESCRIPTION:In the Dispatches investigation In Plain Sight which documented a litany of sexual assault allegations by Russell Brand\, only one comedian committed themselves to camera to comment on it – Daniel Sloss. “I was only brave by omission. I was only brave because other people were cowards. Let’s be honest: I did the bare minimum. I acknowledged a rumor that we had all heard\,” he told the New York Times. A visceral performer who isn’t afraid to tightrope the acceptable with his material\, it remains to be seen if parenthood has softened some of his edges.

SUMMARY:Lambchop
DESCRIPTION:Lambchop has been around a while and then some. The one constant in its line-up over the years is Kurt Wagner. Armed with 16 studio albums\, from Jack’s Tulips in 1994 up to The Bible in 2022\, it’s safe to safe Wagner is well positioned with an ample catalogue to choose from for this intimate piano performance. Admittedly\, we’ve dipped in and out of their work over the years but even dipping back into The Bible whilst writing this\, it’s safe to say Wagner is in fine fettle wrestling with mortality and delivering in the words of Sam Goldner for Pitchfork\, “a haunting ode to everyday American pain and the small ways we make it through.” Wagner will be joined by musician and producer Andrew Broder.

SUMMARY:Gaia
DESCRIPTION:Gaia is a touring artwork by artist Luke Jerram. Measuring seven metres in diameter and created from 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface the artwork provides the opportunity to see our planet\, floating in three dimensions. While Trinity College undertakes its massive conservation project which has emptied the shelves of the Long Room\, it’s fair to say the cash cow that is this space needed a new spectacle and it comes in this hyper photo/selfie friendly spectacle of Gaia – the name for the personification of the Earth in Greek Mythology. There’s a sense of awe and wonder looking at earth revolving in such a profoundly landmark location. The Book of Kells is still on display and included in admission. \n \nTrinity College\, €19

SUMMARY:Paula Pohli: CONNEXIONS
DESCRIPTION:CONNEXIONS: Sidewalks is an exhibition created by artist Paula Pohli about ‘Walking’\, that is\, walking the sidewalks of Dublin. The prints and paintings in CONNEXIONS were inspired by Dublin City. In particular\, Paula connects places in Dublin to James Joyce’s books. \nPaula Pohli\, an artist\, walks in Dublin. She is not a Flâneur. She walks as an artist walks: looks\, observes\, experiences. This exhibition is her personal visual record of graphic images of Dublin City. Both an artist and author\, James Joyce was born in Dublin and both are and were great walkers. On her Dublin walks she connected the smells and the feel of the city to some of James Joyce’s literary works. \n‘I was born in Dublin. I moved into the north inner city in Dublin about 2006. The energetic and visual impact of Dublin life and Liffey-life excited my imagination. I read ‘Ulysses’ to educate and enhance my visual experience of walking around Dublin City. I\, as an artist discovered my very own Dublin and I created prints mostly of what city life presented to me on my walks.’ \nThe artist enjoys walking and exploring the sidewalks of Dublin; walking from Grafton Street on the South side to The Dublin Spire on the North side is her focal point. \nDublin Only is near O’Connell Bridge in the city centre\nBorn in Dublin Paula Pohli lives in rural Ireland. She travels extensively and her travels confirm to her that ‘her’ Dublin and James Joyce’s ‘Dublin’ are still active and ‘alive\, alive O’. It is of course a New Dublin. Paula is a cyclist too. She biked it to Bull Island and Dublin Port. Paula has a tendency to look downwards and sideways down the sidewalks of Dublin. After rain the sidewalks of Dublin smell different. She looks at coal lids and covers. She looks down laneways: ‘Moland Place’ (linocut). The artist looks downwards into the Liffey: ‘Dublin\, only’ is a painting that captures the seaweed curtains that drape the Liffey walls\, but only at low tide. ‘Poddle into Liffey’ is a linocut of two rivers meeting one another: the Poddle and the Liffey. This a connection to Thomas Moore’s poem\,  ‘The Meeting of the Waters’ and Joyce referenced it in Ulysses. \n\nOnly at Low Tide is out at the Bull Wall in Dollymount\n\nIn Ulysses\, Joyce called Sparrows ‘hopping mice’. The sparrows in her Sparrows painting pestered Paula in Mayo for food. She connected them to Joyce. Paula smiled as she painted the sparrows in egg tempera. Joyce wrote: ‘Sparrows look like hopping mice’. Food features in Joyce’s books. Bloom’s breakfast is an olfactory reading experience for Paula Pohli. \nFinally\, the artist does look upwards. The Dublin Spire drew her artistic eye upwards to the Dublin sky:  she created a linocut of the Spire\, Dublin Apparition.  This print won third prize in an International Print Biennial in the Centre for Contemporary Printmaking in Connecticut in the US. Her mini prints featured in over 30-40 International Mini Print Biennials in the US\, UK\, Bulgaria\, Egypt\, Germany\, etc. She has had many solo shows in Dublin\, in Ireland\, as well as in Holland and Germany. Paula’s prints and paintings are in the National Gallery of Ireland\, in Dublin. \nPaula does not philosophise about Dublin. She makes prints and paintings of Dublin City for its own sake.  However\, the artist is deeply grateful to James Joyce for spending his lifetime writing about Dublin. \nCONNEXIONS II in 2024\, will be about country walks and rural wildlife. \nCONNEXIONS\, an exhibition primarily of Linocuts\, some egg tempera and brush drawings on paper by Paula Pohli is at The James Joyce Centre\, 35 North Great Georges Street\, Dublin D01 WK44. \nThis exhibition continues into 2024 and can be viewed from Monday to Saturday between 10 am to 4pm. \nFeature Image: Finn’s Hotel is where James Joyce met Nora \nAll images by Paula Pohli

SUMMARY:John Kindness - The Odyssey
DESCRIPTION:Kindness describes himself as an “artist\, currently completing a visual version of Homer’s Odyssey”. He enjoys working with objects which have been through “the patina of usage” and uses traditional methods such as mosaic and fresco painting to explore contemporary themes and defy conventional notions of the fine art object – the hazards of Scylla and Charybdis are engraved onto a toilet seat\, Odysseus’s teenage son listens to albums by ‘The Sirens’ and ‘The Gorgons’. In his mimicking of the visual styles of Ancient Greek vase-painting\, he suggests that the residues of contemporary life will be the artefacts of the future.

SUMMARY:Christmas Carols
DESCRIPTION:Tis the season to pour some mulled wine and indulge one of the finest traditions. One of the reasons Christmas carols bring such a sense of consolation and connection is surely their familiarity. Most of us have sung them since our primary school days. We pride ourselves on knowing the words. As the word carol – a joyful song – suggests\, carols bring us together and connect us in groups of shared experience and feelings. The grand 19th Century congregational numbers – O Come All Ye Faithful for instance – is a rousing hymn of communal praise. Here are some which you can listen to or sing to your heart’s content. \n‘Peace on Earth’ Christmas Carols at Christ Church Cathedral with the St Mary’s College Singers\, Saturday December 2\, 8pm – 9.15pm\, €25. \nChristmas Carol Concert for Cancer Research\, Trinity College Chapel\, Tuesday December 5\, 6pm-7.30pm\, €30. \nNew Dublin Voices\, Christchurch Cathedral\, Saturday December 9\, 8pm\, €20/€25. \n‘Joy to the World’ Glória LGBT+ Choir\, St Andrew’s Church\, Friday December 15\, 7.30pm\, €20/€25.

SUMMARY:Morag Myerscough with The Local Community in Tallaght - A Good Night’s Sleep
DESCRIPTION:We first encountered the work of Morag Myerscough on these shores when the late John Reynolds brought the UK artist over to create the Together Bandstand for the inaugural edition of All Together Now in 2018. “John loved my ‘Temple of Agape’ and I wanted to make a new piece of work that was unique to his new festival\,” said Morag. \nNow she returns with A Good Night’s Sleep – a bold\, colourful\, immersive intervention which is the culmination of over ten months working with the Irish Refugee Council’s Youth Service\, DoubleTake Studio\, New Horizon HUB\, and the Tallaght Ukrainian community to explore the multifaceted theme of ‘belonging’. \nThe participants shared their hopes and dreams\, fears and struggles in workshops led by the artist. The groups connected using the power of colour\, word\, and sound to express themselves. \nRua Red until March 3.

From the wild and windswept refuges of old Ireland to the turbulent golden dunes of North Africa\, The Secret Singers share their places\, their voices and their worldviews – through song. \nSinging tunes of traditional Ireland alongside world classics and pop\, our selection captures the rich musical influences and background of each singer. \nAwaken to the searing contemporary sounds of Farah Elle. Move to the up-beat catchy soul of Asha Ari. Bathe in the sonorous vocal depths of Caitlin Donovan. Surrender to the uncompromising truth of Tríona Sings. \nAnd when all that is done \nAnd when time and place is gone \nAnd when you hear us sing \nMagic just might happen…together\n \nmain image: Ecardo Baader
