DESCRIPTION:The Bloomsday Film Festival\, the most literary film festival in Ireland\, features a packed programme of events including a special 20th anniversary screening of Lenny Abrahamson’s Adam and Paul.\n \nThis year’s festival which takes place from Wednesday 12th to Sunday 16th June\, is run in partnership with the Bloomsday Festival and the James Joyce Centre\, and offers a unique festival experience blending film and literature in celebration of James Joyce’s relationship with cinema and the city of Dublin. \nThe 2024 programme sees Triestine filmmaker Martin Turk visit the IFI to present his side of the story about Ireland’s first cinema theatre in his documentary Kino Volta. Meanwhile Alice in Wonderland is given nightmarish treatment in experimental film The Disembodiment of Alice inspired by Finnegan’s Wake. Both films screen at the IFI and will be followed by a Q&A with filmmakers. \n \nThe opulent surroundings of the James Joyce Centre will play host to an eclectic array of short films ranging from short stories about Dublin\, to films with a Joycean\, literary\, poetic and experimental theme. Lankum\, who share a member with the phenomenal ØXN\, have had shows cancelled in Germany and speeches cut from RTÉ Choice Prize Awards\, but whether it’s Ian Lynch’s ever present keffiyeh or Radie Peat‘s moving\, poignant words as they accept awards\, their work to voice the horrors happening in Gaza has been ceaseless. \nWith all proceeds going to MAP (Medical Aid for Palestinians)\, this special performance also brings together experimental folk wunderkind\, Junior Brother\, art punk overlords Pretty Happy\, and the ecstatic jubilation that is Mohammad Syfkhan to do the right thing. DESCRIPTION:Times have changed. When I was pacing nervously up and down the backstage area of venues such as The Rock Garden and The New Inn in the 90s’\, stage time was usually 10pm with curfew at 11.30pm. These days if you arrive at 9.30 at a venue there’s a good chance the headliners are midway through their set. It’s hardly rock n roll so it’s good to see that one of our favourite venues is bucking the trend for their self curated Depot Sessions with live music programmed up until midnight. Proper gig time! Spread over two nights\, the sessions are a nicely curated 3 band line up per night with some red hot contenders in the mix. SexyTadhg\, Fizzy Orange and WineMom perform on Thursday while Really Good Time\, Squarehead and Cruel Sister are Friday’s bill of fare. SUMMARY:Hilary Heron: A Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:The first major retrospective exhibition of pioneering modernist sculptor Heron’s work since 1964\, IMMA’s glorious celebration of Heron’s work is a superb presentation that attempts to correct the ways that her work has been overlooked in Irish and international histories of modern sculpture and wholeheartedly succeeds. The Dublin born sculptor co-represented Ireland at the 1956 Venice Biennale alongside painter Louis le Brocquy and was a master welder\, a practice highly unusual for an Irish artist\, let alone a woman in the 1950s. \nBringing together work from national and international collections\, including carvings\, welding and castings\, Heron’s skilful pieces have an enduring influence on contemporary Irish sculpture and it’s wonderful to finally see her legacy celebrated in such exalted surroundings. \nHilary Heron: A Retrospective runs at the Irish Museum of Modern Art until 28th Oct.

DESCRIPTION:Africa Day\, the annual worldwide celebration of the people\, cultures and potential of the African continent\, returns to Dublin’s Royal Hospital Kilmainham (RHK) this year as part of a nationwide programme of events to mark the day. This much anticipated concert celebrates one of the great Dublin born composers\, Charles Villiers Stanford\, and includes short pieces from acclaimed contemporary composers\, Judith Ring and Jake Runestad. \n2024 is the centenary of the death of the Irish composer Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924). Having graduated from University of Cambridge\, the Dublin musician undertook further studies in Leipzig and Berlin. Perhaps best known as the teacher of such great English composers as Vaughan Williams\, Gustav Holst\, Samuel Taylor-Coleridge and Herbert Howells\, recent years have seen Stanford increasingly recognised as an important composer in his own right. \nThe ‘Weaver’\, by Irish composer Judith Ring\, on a poem by Diane Tierney\, was commissioned by The Guinness Choir who performed its world premiere in May 2022. SUMMARY:Inscapes - Rachael Johnson at The Red Stables Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Irish Artist Rachael Johnson returns to Dublin this month to present an exhibition of new work from her ‘Inscapes’ series at the Red Stables Gallery in Clontarf.  She describes ‘inscaping’ as a non-directive process: ‘the gradual application and manipulation of colour\, line\, form and scrap until an archetypal curve or hue\, recalled from sensory memory begins to resonate\, gradually making visibly familiar the connection between inner and outer worlds’. \n\nThe artist left Ireland in 1980 to complete her Fine Arts Degree before travelling extensively worldwide and nurturing an interest in myth and symbol\, as well as the use of art objects and images for healing purposes. She returned to Ireland in 1991 to work as a community artist on the Mural Squad and was often seen creatively tackling empty wall spaces around the inner city with a ladder\, brush and buckets of paint in the days before muralists carried spray cans. During this time she also worked as an illustrator and graphic designer for a variety of publications in Dublin.\n\nIn 2008 Rachael completed a Masters in Art Therapy at CAD\, Cork and is currently based in Derry working as a registered art therapist. She spends much of her free time painting in her late father’s studio in Fermanagh\, where she enjoys creating objects and images with found\, organic and scrap material\, and playing with the phenomenon of pareidolia – the human tendency to seek meaning in drifting and elusive imagery\, or ‘cloud reading’.\n\n‘Inscapes’ opens at the Red Stables Gallery\, Mount Prospect Ave\, Clontarf on April 30th and runs until May 6th The gallery is open 10 am – 5 pm daily and entry is free\n\nrachaeljohnsonartist.com
