SUMMARY:Metronome 60 BPM
DESCRIPTION:With performances by David Stalling\, Ruth McGinley\, Chiamaka Enyi-Amadi\, Matthew Nolan\, Stevie Appelby\, Arrivalists and some very special guests\, Metronome returns to the NCH with 60 BPM\,  a specially curated evening of sensory pleasure with neurodivergent audiences in mind. \nIt’s said that the sound of a metronome set at 60 beats per minute is inherently relaxing so pull up a bean bag and enjoy 360 degrees of performance where music\, poetry and spoken word will emerge from a foundation of ambience and visual repose. Curated by SoFFt Productions\, The National Concert Hall and Matthew Nolan Music\, the evening aims to engage with artists in a new way; to think about how art and music can be presented with decompressions and chill at the core using design\, space and beats. \nFamous songs that are 60 bpm? Dreams by Fleetwood Mac\, Everybody’s Talkin’ by Nilsson\, Cat Power’s The Greatest\, Heart Of Gold by Neil Young and TLC’s Waterfalls. \nThe Studio – National Concert Hall \nSat June 8th 8.30pm

SUMMARY:Echoes of Elegance - Ishmael Claxton
DESCRIPTION:A re-imagining of the famed Baistegui Ball\, through the lens of fine artist and celebrated photographer Ishmael Claxton. For this exhibition\, Claxton has staged scenes from ‘the party of the century’ in Dublin Castle. Drawing on his appreciation for British photographer Cecil Beaton\, and even sourcing some of the original costumes from that night in Venice. A prolific and kinetic artist\, Claxton’s work is always thought provoking\, and relevant. The opening night June 7th offers the opportunity to speak with the artist himself about the work\, and with a gentleman as eloquent and generous as Ishmael\, that is an opportunity not to be missed. \n \n‘Echoes of Elegance’ by Ishmael Claxton Irish Georgian Society\, 58 William St South\, Dublin 2 \nOpening June 7th \nFrom New York City To The Heart of The Liberties – Ishmael Claxton \n

SUMMARY:The Depot Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Times have changed. When I was pacing nervously up and down the backstage area of venues such as The Rock Garden and The New Inn in the 90s’\, stage time was usually 10pm with curfew at 11.30pm. These days if you arrive at 9.30 at a venue there’s a good chance the headliners are midway through their set. It’s hardly rock n roll so it’s good to see that one of our favourite venues is bucking the trend for their self curated Depot Sessions with live music programmed up until midnight. Proper gig time! Spread over two nights\, the sessions are a nicely curated 3 band line up per night with some red hot contenders in the mix. SexyTadhg\, Fizzy Orange and WineMom perform on Thursday while Really Good Time\, Squarehead and Cruel Sister are Friday’s bill of fare. All acts bring something fresh to the table and are well worth checking out. \nTickets are only a tenner and are available online from thecomplex.ie \nThe Depot Sessions take place at The Complex\, Smithfield from 8.30pm – 12am on Thursday June 6th & Friday June 7th.\n \nWords: Adhamh Ó Caoimh

SUMMARY:Foggy Notions: Claire Rousay
DESCRIPTION:Spectacular San Antonio experimentalist Claire Rousay is touring behind the excellent ‘sentiment’\, her newest album through the ever-insightful Thrill Jockey records. \nThe record is a hazy collection of ambient electronic collage\, dreamy synth textures\, melancholy AutoTune and granular melodies seamed though with threads of jagged guitar\, with the field recordings of everyday life; voicemails\, haptics\, stop watches and whispers baying and weaving in and out of the mix. \nAs always\, Dublin promoters Foggy Notions can be relied upon to bring you staggeringly essential music\, delivered in beautiful confines\, collaborating with the Project Arts Theatre for an intimate performance that promises to be nothing short of spellbinding. \nClaire Rousay plays at The Project Arts Centre\, on Saturday June 1st

SUMMARY:Full Flair - Cian Walker & Esko
DESCRIPTION:This collaborative exhibition from Dublin artists Esko & Cian Walker celebrates the pair’s complementary and distinct interpretations of abstract expressionism\, informed by their background in graffiti. The psychedelic\, prismatic pieces from Walker alongside the precise and energetic work that describes Esko’s art perfectly highlights the individuality of each. An unmissable opportunity to appreciate the work of two kinetic\, enigmatic young artists. \n‘Full Flair’ Exhibition by Cian Walker & Esko takes place at Charlemont Sq\, Dublin from 23rd May – 2nd of June

SUMMARY:Lavery - ‘Jade Garden’ EP Launch
DESCRIPTION:One of the most exciting prospects in Jazz and Soul in Ireland and the moment\, this Dublin based octet imbues their funky neo soul with an authenticity and musicianship that many of their contemporaries\, quite simply\, lack. The second show in Dublin in a busy month of May\, the night also marks the release of their excellent\, excellent new EP\, ‘Jade Garden’. Boasting an absolute powerhouse of a voice in Annalise Furkin\, who fronts a lineup featuring Havana Roots/Yankari saxman Richard Ng and TBL8 Brass Band trombone player Martin Farrelly. Every performance I’ve seen of the group has been a fire breathing showcase of sublime artistry married with technical mastery.  Not to be missed\, especially if you’re the type to tell people\, “I was there.” – Adhamh O Caoimh \nLavery – ‘Jade Garden’ EP Launch takes place Upstairs in Whelan’s on Saturday May 25th

SUMMARY:Hilary Heron: A Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:The first major retrospective exhibition of pioneering modernist sculptor Heron’s work since 1964\, IMMA’s glorious celebration of Heron’s work is a superb presentation that attempts to correct the ways that her work has been overlooked in Irish and international histories of modern sculpture and wholeheartedly succeeds. The Dublin born sculptor co-represented Ireland at the 1956 Venice Biennale alongside painter Louis le Brocquy and was a master welder\, a practice highly unusual for an Irish artist\, let alone a woman in the 1950s. \nBringing together work from national and international collections\, including carvings\, welding and castings\, Heron’s skilful pieces have an enduring influence on contemporary Irish sculpture and it’s wonderful to finally see her legacy celebrated in such exalted surroundings. \nHilary Heron: A Retrospective runs at the Irish Museum of Modern Art until 28th Oct.

SUMMARY:Guinness Choir: Stanford’s ‘Mass in G’ + The Weaver + Cello Songs
DESCRIPTION:The Guinness Choir will present Stanford’s ‘Mass in G’ together with ‘The Weaver’ by Judith Ring and ‘Cello Songs’ by Jake Runestad in St. Andrew’s Church\, Dublin 2 on Saturday\, May 11th 2024. This much anticipated concert celebrates one of the great Dublin born composers\, Charles Villiers Stanford\, and includes short pieces from acclaimed contemporary composers\, Judith Ring and Jake Runestad. \n2024 is the centenary of the death of the Irish composer Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924). Having graduated from University of Cambridge\, the Dublin musician undertook further studies in Leipzig and Berlin. Perhaps best known as the teacher of such great English composers as Vaughan Williams\, Gustav Holst\, Samuel Taylor-Coleridge and Herbert Howells\, recent years have seen Stanford increasingly recognised as an important composer in his own right. \nThe ‘Weaver’\, by Irish composer Judith Ring\, on a poem by Diane Tierney\, was commissioned by The Guinness Choir who performed its world premiere in May 2022. SUMMARY:Much Ado About Dying
DESCRIPTION:This poignant\, moving documentary from filmmaker Simon Chambers chronicles his journey from India to London to care for his Uncle David\, a retired bohemian gay actor\, and his unbreakable\, anarchic spirit. \nDealing with the complicated questions of how to care for our elderly\, and how to help them die the best death they can\, it’s by turns hilarious and heartbreaking\, while also touching on many important subjects. \nCovering a range of important issues from loneliness to the roles of carers\, this delicate film is both a beautiful work in itself and an important dispatch\, as well as an ode and celebration. \nA Q&A session with the film’s Director Simon Chambers takes place at the IFI following the screening at 6.30pm on Friday May 10th\, when the film goes on general release. For bookings see ifi.ie \nQ&A sessions are also scheduled to take place at Lighthouse Cinema\, Dublin on Sunday May 12th and at Omniplex Rathmines\, Dublin on Friday May 17th.

SUMMARY:Phizzfest
DESCRIPTION:While I may have serious contentions about my home being named one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world\, it does get a few things right. One of those things is the annual Phizzfest. \nWhether it’s seeing hotly topped Dublin act Fizzy Orange decimating Dalymount\, the sublime artistry of of Mohammad Syfkhan elevating the All Saints\, outdoor knit alongs by The Knitting Room or the near legendary Bohemian Flea Market\, the weekend promises to make this admittedly somewhat pleasant\, unfeasibly expensive part of the city the nicest place in Dublin for three glorious days. – Adhamh Ó Caoimh \nPhizzfest\, May 10th – 12th\, Phibsborough

SUMMARY:International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival
DESCRIPTION:21 years strong\, and now the largest event of its type in the world\, the International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival celebrates the immense contribution of gay people to theatre in all its myriad forms\, focusing  on recent Irish and international works with a broadly gay relevance. With intriguing prospects like ‘Christian Support Group’ by Rosalind Patton and a host of two for the price of one double bill performances – we especially like the bill sharing ‘In Vitro’\, Aoife O’Connor’s heartfelt\, funny play that explores a same-sex couple’s journey to parenthood in today’s Ireland and Amy Garner’s ‘Babies in Bathwater’\, a powerful work that won the Sean Meehan Identity Award for its portrayal of religious abuse – there’s intrigue and value at every turn. Horror fans too will be well catered for\, with Daniel Orejon’s exploration of the history of homophobia in Spain\, through a unique blend of choreography\, theatre and storytelling. Truly\, the two week long affair will have something to appeal to everyone\, with another feather to set in a cap of year after year of wonderful programming. \nInternational Dublin Gay Theatre Festival takes place from May 6th – 19th  \ngaytheatre.ie

SUMMARY:Late Works of Colin Harrison
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of twenty paintings chosen from those in the artist’s studio at the time of his passing in 2017\, and from the collection of his family\, this beautiful exhibit highlighst the artist’s extraordinary touch\, inimitable style and singular use of light and colour. His work consistently displays a consummately skilled draughtsmanship while playing with the viewer’s preconceptions of a unified pictorial space/time/narrative\, leading to moods and atmospheres that can be either unsettling or humorous depending on the viewer’s mindset. \nTaylor Galleries\, 16 Kildare Street\, Dublin 2\,  \n3 – 25 May\, 2024

DESCRIPTION:I love him for making Piers Morgan look like the ineffectual\, impotent twit he is\, but I’m not alone. SUMMARY:Inscapes - Rachael Johnson at The Red Stables Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Irish Artist Rachael Johnson returns to Dublin this month to present an exhibition of new work from her ‘Inscapes’ series at the Red Stables Gallery in Clontarf.  She describes ‘inscaping’ as a non-directive process: ‘the gradual application and manipulation of colour\, line\, form and scrap until an archetypal curve or hue\, recalled from sensory memory begins to resonate\, gradually making visibly familiar the connection between inner and outer worlds’. \n\nThe artist left Ireland in 1980 to complete her Fine Arts Degree before travelling extensively worldwide and nurturing an interest in myth and symbol\, as well as the use of art objects and images for healing purposes. She returned to Ireland in 1991 to work as a community artist on the Mural Squad and was often seen creatively tackling empty wall spaces around the inner city with a ladder\, brush and buckets of paint in the days before muralists carried spray cans. During this time she also worked as an illustrator and graphic designer for a variety of publications in Dublin.\n\nIn 2008 Rachael completed a Masters in Art Therapy at CAD\, Cork and is currently based in Derry working as a registered art therapist. She spends much of her free time painting in her late father’s studio in Fermanagh\, where she enjoys creating objects and images with found\, organic and scrap material\, and playing with the phenomenon of pareidolia – the human tendency to seek meaning in drifting and elusive imagery\, or ‘cloud reading’.\n\n‘Inscapes’ opens at the Red Stables Gallery\, Mount Prospect Ave\, Clontarf on April 30th and runs until May 6th The gallery is open 10 am – 5 pm daily and entry is free\n\nrachaeljohnsonartist.com

SUMMARY:Live Collision Festival - Farah Elle
DESCRIPTION:Dubliner Farah Elle’s sound touches on her Libyan roots and Irish heritage with a contemporary pop sensibility\, while her evocative lyrics sing of growth and perseverance. Like contemporaries Sive and Laura Duff\, Elle’s unique approach defines her as a singer songwriter. This performance\, is part of the Live Collision Festival running from the 25th to the 27th of April. Back in 2016\, we had this to say: “Elle mixes a powerful stage presence with a curious blend of genres that sees her Irish accent drift into Arabic-influenced melismas”\, and she has only gotten better since. \nProject Arts Centre\, 25th April\, 9pm

SUMMARY:Children of the Sun
DESCRIPTION:Written by Hilary Fannin\, after Gorky and directed by Lynne Parker\, this Rough Magic and Abbey Theatre co-production comes to the Abbey stage in just three weeks. The story of how “a small family\, their collection of friends and one eccentric stranger distract\, entertain and enrage each other in a moment of crisis.” \nPlaywright Hilary Fannin says: “What value is prediction when the writing is splashed on the wall? Children of the Sun\, after Maxim Gorky’s 1905 text\, is a mordantly comic exploration of one household’s attempts to shelter from the merciless approach of imminent devastation under a tattered blanket of art\, beauty and dog-eared love.” \n \nAbbey Theatre\, 13th April – 11th May \nOn the Abbey stage from 13th April to 11th May\, tickets are on sale now

SUMMARY:A Sod State - Eoghan Ryan
DESCRIPTION:Eoghan Ryan’s film installation\, A Sod State\, examines themes of religion\, state power\, and spectatorship through the lens of the Northern Irish Troubles. Showing  for the first time in Ireland\, the film “unravels a world of untrustworthy narration\, wandering sounds\, strobing imagery\, and disarray. It is a tale of a corrupted\, often censored\, surreal\, and confused state of affairs\, in which an inner demagogue is manifested. This creature\, or puppet\, is not quite god\, not quite devil\, and performs binary contradictions of class\, faith\, identity\, and borders; private\, public\, and political.” WIth the opening reception planned for April 12th\, at 6pm\, this deep\, thought provoking work looks set to continue The Complex’s reputation for Stellar Programming in the heart of Smithfield. \nThe Gallery\, Arran St East | D07 YY97  \n13th – 27th April \nthecomplex.ie
