SUMMARY:Acoustic Oceans - Mark Francis
DESCRIPTION:Acoustic Oceans is an exhibition of new paintings on canvas\, aluminium and paper by Mark Francis that beautifully captures the sensory experience of the modern age; the speed of movement of information and the way our eyes are stimulated by the complexities of personal data storage. \nThe works are bold stripes of vertical rich hues and patterned colour that suggest energy and modernity while the concept of sound entwines its way into the art as abstract noise transforms into patterns of light\, akin to the display of a studio mixing desk. \nAcoustic Oceans by Mark Francis is at Kerlin Gallery  Anne’s Lane\, South Anne Street\, D2 Until August 24th

SUMMARY:Bloomsday Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Bloomsday Film Festival\, the most literary film festival in Ireland\, features a packed programme of events including a special 20th anniversary screening of Lenny Abrahamson’s Adam and Paul.\n \nThis year’s festival which takes place from Wednesday 12th to Sunday 16th June\, is run in partnership with the Bloomsday Festival and the James Joyce Centre\, and offers a unique festival experience blending film and literature in celebration of James Joyce’s relationship with cinema and the city of Dublin. \nThe 2024 programme sees Triestine filmmaker Martin Turk visit the IFI to present his side of the story about Ireland’s first cinema theatre in his documentary Kino Volta. Urban beekeepers\, boxing clubs and the Smithfield Market feature in documentary shorts\, while actor Colm Meaney provides the voice of George Bernard Shaw in a madcap puppet film which portrays a fascinating spat between Shaw and Shakespeare. \nThe inimitable Lalor Roddy pops up as Ezra Pound\, while there is also a special focus on Lucia Joyce and collaborations with the Contemporary Music Centre and the Adrian Brinkerhoff Poetry Foundation. \nThe festival events culminate with a lively Award Ceremony at the IFI with music from Irish singer-songwriter David Keenan. \nMore information and tickets here: bloomsdayfestival.ie/bloomsday-film-festival/ \nKeep up to date with the Bloomsday Film Festival on Facebook\, Instagram\, Twitter and You Tube

SUMMARY:Music For Gaza
DESCRIPTION:As the unconscionable genocide of the Palestinian people plays out in real time\, the solidarity of the majority of the artists on these shores has been utterly unwavering. The less said about our hypocrite headed to Eurovision\, the better\, but aside from them\, artists like Kneecap\, Gurriers and Soda Blonde have dropped out of performances at massive US festivals like SXSW for their ties to Israel. Lankum\, who share a member with the phenomenal ØXN\, have had shows cancelled in Germany and speeches cut from RTÉ Choice Prize Awards\, but whether it’s Ian Lynch’s ever present keffiyeh or Radie Peat‘s moving\, poignant words as they accept awards\, their work to voice the horrors happening in Gaza has been ceaseless. \nWith all proceeds going to MAP (Medical Aid for Palestinians)\, this special performance also brings together experimental folk wunderkind\, Junior Brother\, art punk overlords Pretty Happy\, and the ecstatic jubilation that is Mohammad Syfkhan to do the right thing. To try to make a stand to aid the people of Palestine. \nWords: Adhamh Ó Caoimh \nMusic For Gaza takes place at 7.30pm on Tuesday June 11th at the Button Factory. Tickets here. \nThose who can’t attend but wish to donate can do so here.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Margaret Atwood\, Mary Robinson and Laurie Anderson
DESCRIPTION:Lyric Fm broadcaster John Kelly gets the plum job of interviewing these three amazing women for this Borris Festival Of Writing And Ideas presentation. Three extraordinary women – one of the greatest voices of contemporary literature; Ireland’s first woman president and advocate for sustainable global development and one of America’s most engaging and daring creative pioneers – confront some of the most urgent questions of today. For many people these three would be amongst their dream dinner party guests so expect riveting conversations on topics such as gender and identity\, religion and myth\, the power of language\, climate change\, and power politics. With elections looming large in Ireland\, the U.K and America it will be fascinating to hear their views on the candidates and the general health and welfare of the planet. \nAn Evening with Margaret Atwood\, Mary Robinson and Laurie Anderson takes place at Bord Gais Energy Theatre on Sun June 9th at 7.30pm.

SUMMARY:Metronome 60 BPM
DESCRIPTION:With performances by David Stalling\, Ruth McGinley\, Chiamaka Enyi-Amadi\, Matthew Nolan\, Stevie Appelby\, Arrivalists and some very special guests\, Metronome returns to the NCH with 60 BPM\,  a specially curated evening of sensory pleasure with neurodivergent audiences in mind. \nIt’s said that the sound of a metronome set at 60 beats per minute is inherently relaxing so pull up a bean bag and enjoy 360 degrees of performance where music\, poetry and spoken word will emerge from a foundation of ambience and visual repose. Curated by SoFFt Productions\, The National Concert Hall and Matthew Nolan Music\, the evening aims to engage with artists in a new way; to think about how art and music can be presented with decompressions and chill at the core using design\, space and beats. \nFamous songs that are 60 bpm? Dreams by Fleetwood Mac\, Everybody’s Talkin’ by Nilsson\, Cat Power’s The Greatest\, Heart Of Gold by Neil Young and TLC’s Waterfalls. \nThe Studio – National Concert Hall \nSat June 8th 8.30pm

SUMMARY:Echoes of Elegance - Ishmael Claxton
DESCRIPTION:A re-imagining of the famed Baistegui Ball\, through the lens of fine artist and celebrated photographer Ishmael Claxton. For this exhibition\, Claxton has staged scenes from ‘the party of the century’ in Dublin Castle. Drawing on his appreciation for British photographer Cecil Beaton\, and even sourcing some of the original costumes from that night in Venice. A prolific and kinetic artist\, Claxton’s work is always thought provoking\, and relevant. The opening night June 7th offers the opportunity to speak with the artist himself about the work\, and with a gentleman as eloquent and generous as Ishmael\, that is an opportunity not to be missed. \n \n‘Echoes of Elegance’ by Ishmael Claxton Irish Georgian Society\, 58 William St South\, Dublin 2 \nOpening June 7th \nFrom New York City To The Heart of The Liberties – Ishmael Claxton \n

SUMMARY:The Depot Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Times have changed. When I was pacing nervously up and down the backstage area of venues such as The Rock Garden and The New Inn in the 90s’\, stage time was usually 10pm with curfew at 11.30pm. These days if you arrive at 9.30 at a venue there’s a good chance the headliners are midway through their set. It’s hardly rock n roll so it’s good to see that one of our favourite venues is bucking the trend for their self curated Depot Sessions with live music programmed up until midnight. Proper gig time! Spread over two nights\, the sessions are a nicely curated 3 band line up per night with some red hot contenders in the mix. SexyTadhg\, Fizzy Orange and WineMom perform on Thursday while Really Good Time\, Squarehead and Cruel Sister are Friday’s bill of fare. All acts bring something fresh to the table and are well worth checking out. \nTickets are only a tenner and are available online from thecomplex.ie \nThe Depot Sessions take place at The Complex\, Smithfield from 8.30pm – 12am on Thursday June 6th & Friday June 7th.\n \nWords: Adhamh Ó Caoimh

SUMMARY:Foggy Notions: Claire Rousay
DESCRIPTION:Spectacular San Antonio experimentalist Claire Rousay is touring behind the excellent ‘sentiment’\, her newest album through the ever-insightful Thrill Jockey records. \nThe record is a hazy collection of ambient electronic collage\, dreamy synth textures\, melancholy AutoTune and granular melodies seamed though with threads of jagged guitar\, with the field recordings of everyday life; voicemails\, haptics\, stop watches and whispers baying and weaving in and out of the mix. \nAs always\, Dublin promoters Foggy Notions can be relied upon to bring you staggeringly essential music\, delivered in beautiful confines\, collaborating with the Project Arts Theatre for an intimate performance that promises to be nothing short of spellbinding. \nClaire Rousay plays at The Project Arts Centre\, on Saturday June 1st

SUMMARY:Lavery - ‘Jade Garden’ EP Launch
DESCRIPTION:One of the most exciting prospects in Jazz and Soul in Ireland and the moment\, this Dublin based octet imbues their funky neo soul with an authenticity and musicianship that many of their contemporaries\, quite simply\, lack. The second show in Dublin in a busy month of May\, the night also marks the release of their excellent\, excellent new EP\, ‘Jade Garden’. Boasting an absolute powerhouse of a voice in Annalise Furkin\, who fronts a lineup featuring Havana Roots/Yankari saxman Richard Ng and TBL8 Brass Band trombone player Martin Farrelly. Every performance I’ve seen of the group has been a fire breathing showcase of sublime artistry married with technical mastery.  Not to be missed\, especially if you’re the type to tell people\, “I was there.” – Adhamh O Caoimh \nLavery – ‘Jade Garden’ EP Launch takes place Upstairs in Whelan’s on Saturday May 25th

SUMMARY:Hilary Heron: A Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:The first major retrospective exhibition of pioneering modernist sculptor Heron’s work since 1964\, IMMA’s glorious celebration of Heron’s work is a superb presentation that attempts to correct the ways that her work has been overlooked in Irish and international histories of modern sculpture and wholeheartedly succeeds. The Dublin born sculptor co-represented Ireland at the 1956 Venice Biennale alongside painter Louis le Brocquy and was a master welder\, a practice highly unusual for an Irish artist\, let alone a woman in the 1950s. \nBringing together work from national and international collections\, including carvings\, welding and castings\, Heron’s skilful pieces have an enduring influence on contemporary Irish sculpture and it’s wonderful to finally see her legacy celebrated in such exalted surroundings. \nHilary Heron: A Retrospective runs at the Irish Museum of Modern Art until 28th Oct.
