Kicking off a regular series of entertaining nights on the last Friday of every month\, Friday 31st January will see Max Greenwood at the piano hosting special guests Mundy and Alice Jago for an evening of music\, chats and stories about the songs they love. \n\n\n\n\n\nAs part of the conversations over the course of the evening Max and guests will be playing together\, as they perform special and themed versions of great songs. \nOne of Ireland’s best loved Songwriters\, Birr native Mundy rose to fame when ‘To You I Bestow’ was featured on Bad Luhrmann’s Romeo & Juliet Soundtrack. SUMMARY:Japan - Richard Gorman
DESCRIPTION:Japan presents over two decades of Richard Gorman’s celebrated works on paper\, focusing on the motif of the circle. For over thirty years\, Gorman has been visiting Echizen\, a mountainous region of Japan\, to handcraft washi paper alongside the skilled artisans of the family-run Iwano Heizaburo paper mill. \n \nThe mill uses a traditional technique in which kōzo (mulberry) pulp is boiled\, beaten\, then set in sukibune trays\, before being pressed and dried. In some of Gorman’s works\, gouache is applied to the surface of the finished paper; for others\, Gorman developed a process in which dye is soaked directly into the pulp then shaped in moulds\, allowing for a deeper saturation of colour. Originally a day off for Ireland’s hard-working women immediately after Christmas\, the Irish Writers Centre re-imagines this tradition by showcasing extraordinary women writers in Ireland. \nThis year’s theme places Women of Magic And Science front and centre\, shining a spotlight on luminaries ranging from Ireland’s first female botanist\, Ellen Hutchins\, to women working in the field of quantum physics. \nThe evening’s celebrations\, which take place for the first time at Pearse Street Library in Dublin\, will be hosted by award-winning poet Jessica Traynor. Participants can look forward to an evening of phenomenal readings\, spirited discussion and live music\, with a lineup featuring newly commissioned work from novelist Nuala O’Connor who will be writing on the legendary Irish herbalist and ‘wisewoman’ Biddy Early. \nWith explorations of witchcraft\, tarot talk and scientific endeavour on the menu\, the event features contributions from Chandrika Narayanan-Mohan fresh from her artist residency at the Institute of Physics\, who will be reading a new piece on quantum physics and poetry. The netsuke in Chester Beatty’s collection date from the 18th and 19th centuries and depict the twelve zodiac animals\, celebrated in Japan during New Year. \n \nThese beautifully carved pieces offer insights into the animals’ symbolic meanings and their place in Japanese culture. These areas share history\, song and background in a trans-Atlantic connection. \nThe Appalachian region of North Carolina was destroyed by Hurricane Helene\, a once in a thousand year weather event – a hurricane seven hours from the ocean. Rivers typically 20 ft. wide became 1000 ft.\, sweeping away homes\, roads\, schools and entire communities and leaving hundreds dead and thousands homeless. \nOn 16 December\, Ireland is offering support for the Appalachian mountain region with a night of music and poetry benefitting BeLoved Asheville\, a mutual aid social justice charity leading recovery efforts and creating housing for thousands of people displaced by the raging flood waters and landslides. \n \nThis event is headlined by Grammy\, Pulitzer Prize\, and MacArthur Genius Grant winner Rhiannon Giddens. Based in Limerick\, Giddens is a visionary musician who co-founded the Carolina Chocolate Drops\, and is a two-time GRAMMY winner\, with nine additional nominations for her work as a soloist and collaborator. She will be performing with Ireland-renowned Congolese guitarist Niwel Tsumbu. \n \nOther contributing artists include Irish soul vocal royalty Mary Coughlan; I Draw Slow\, a Dublin-based group sitting squarely at the intersection of Irish and Appalachian music; Enda Scahill\, four-time All-Ireland Champion in banjo with Simon Crehan; Loah\, creator and queen of ‘Art Soul’ music which blends West African\, soul\, and Irish traditional music; and Erin Fornoff\, Appalachian Irish poet. \n \nOrganizer Erin Fornoff said\, “There are deeply held ties between Appalachia and Ireland. DESCRIPTION:What begins as a thrilling adventure soon spirals into a harrowing tale of survival against all odds. Trawled is a one-man biographical drama set on a prawn trawler. Twenty-five years after his life-changing experience\, Eoin Ryan brings the wild waves of the Coral Sea\, Australia to life in Smock Alley theatre on November 29th & 30th at 8pm. \n\nSet against the meticulously crafted backdrop of a realistic stage\, Trawled is a sixty-minute tour de force of storytelling that unfolds with the cinematic intensity of a blockbuster film.\n\nDue to the content and subject matter of the play it comes with an over 16’s recommendation. The audience will be taken into a rarely seen world of hard labour and even harder fishermen. Drinking\, fighting\, storms and hungry sharks are part of everyday life. What begins as an adventure\, degenerates quickly into a gripping story to stay alive. \nWritten\, produced\, and acted by Eoin Ryan\, Trawled was first published as a book in 2019. In 2022 Eoin performed the story as a TEDx talk. Eoin’s motivation for going on stage and touring is to share the important universal message ‘to ask for help’.  ‘Having never done anything in theatre before 2023\, I still felt compelled to bring this play and message to life’. \nTrawled was shortlisted for the prestigious PopCorn award at Edinburgh fringe festival. And most recently the book has been shortlisted for the CAP award in nonfiction. \n\nTrawled is making waves. Are you ready to come onboard?

SUMMARY:Paul Winstanley - Arcadia
DESCRIPTION:Kerlin Gallery presents a solo exhibition by Paul Winstanley\, comprising a new series of paintings titled Arcadia\, a continuation of his recent series The Falls\, plus the last of his critically acclaimed Veil series\, a signature body of work initiated in 1999. \nTitled Arcadia\, suggesting ‘something ancient being revisited’\, this new body of work looks towards early 19th-century paintings of idyllic mountainous landscapes – pictures that have largely lost their significance through the ‘gauze of history’. Seizing upon the more abstract elements of these works\, Winstanley revisits the genre from a contemporary standpoint – first ‘degrading’ inkjet prints of the source images\, stripping back detail using a process of wax resist\, before recreating them as paintings. Through this process of reinvention\, the landscapes become spatial encounters – removed from the specificity of place\, they instead tune our attention towards atmosphere\, presence\, and spiritual charge\, all while keeping the ‘shadow’ of the original image. \nThe exhibition runs at Kerlin Gallery from November 29th 2024 until January 16th 2025. \nFeature Image: Landscape with Clouds II\, 2024\, oil on panel\, 56 x 42 cm / 22 x 16.5 in

DESCRIPTION:This will be special. Two generational voices come together as Anohni takes on Reed’s classic catalogue and transgressive lyrics in her own inimitable style. ANOHNI’s relationship with Lou Reed stretches back over two decades. In 2003\, she was a supporting vocalist on the Animal Serenade tour and performed on a number of tracks on Reed’s Edgar Allan Poe inspired album The Raven. In 2006/2007 she sang backing vocals for Reed’s first full performance of Berlin in New York and Sydney. In addition\, Reed contributed vocals and guitar to ‘Fistful of Love’ from I Am a Bird Now. DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the release of  ‘Wake Up\, People!’ the acclaimed new record from Dublin alternative rock outfit\, Sack\, this headline performance is the largest show to date since the band’s resurrection out of the Pandemic. The new album proved the five piece had not lost a step in the interim\, their tuneful and hook-laden songs invested with a new maturity\, and a wry energy. It has been almost a year since this writer has seen them perform\, but it is one of the shows I am looking forward to the most in a very busy calendar.
