SUMMARY:An Evening With Nell:  A Celebration of the life and work of Nell McCafferty
DESCRIPTION:Nell McCafferty was a uniquely talented writer\, human rights campaigner and committed feminist. She rocked the system. Her ground-breaking writings exposed the injustices of Irish society and class and gender discrimination. It is no understatement to say that Nell changed the position of Irish women in society\, in the workplace and in the home. \nMonday November 18th\, sees her friends gather in the Round Room of the Mansion House to celebrate her life\, work and legacy with a special evening of songs\, readings and recordings of her media appearances over her lifetime. \nHosted by Olivia O’Leary\, the gathering sees a collection of friends\, fans and peers from across Nell’s life reading excerpts from some of her incredible work. These include activists Eamonn McCann\, Bernadette McAliskey\, and Ailbhe Smyth\, journalists and writers Una Mullally\, Evelyn Conlan\, her niece Muire McCallion\, Martina Devlin\, poet Paula Meehan\, trailblazer and filmmaker Lelia Doolan\, filmmaker Margo Harkin and more. Music will be performed by the incomparable Mary Coughlan. \nLifelong friend and event organiser Marie Redmond said “This is a public celebration of Nell.  As well as being an extraordinary talent and activist\, in over 50 years of friendship she taught me about being open\, honest and forthright and to always speak the truth. Nell has the respect of thousands of people in Ireland and beyond\, and I wanted to create an opportunity for us to come together to celebrate the uniquely brilliant talent and person that she was and the impact of her work for the women of Ireland. She was honest\, fearless and kind\, generous\, witty and warm and she changed the very fabric of the Ireland of her time.” \nWith a career spanning 50 years\, Nell’s extraordinary legacy of work includes books such as A Woman to Blame\, In the Eyes of the Law\, Peggy Deery and Nell an Autobiography. \nHer ground-breaking writings on the treatment of those with little resources by the courts exposed the injustices of Irish society and the class discrimination that existed in the Irish legal system. Her dear friend Eamonn McCann described her as ‘an instinctual socialist’. \nShe was kind and generous to those in need and a loyal friend always. She changed the position of women in the workplace and in the home and fought for equal pay and rights for women. She spoke truth to power\, without a thought of the personal consequences. \nNell McCafferty was a trailblazer\, a role model and an icon for generations of Irish feminists with a powerful legacy for us to follow. \nAll are welcome. DESCRIPTION:With her recent switch from ceramics to works in felted wool\, Annika Berglund’s practice has gone from strength to strength with her Corona virus piece having been acquired by the National Museum of Ireland for their Covid collection. She has this to say about her exhibition at the Olivier Cornet Gallery: \n“Tapestries show textile as art by displaying it so it can be seen. My work is not woven\, but the idea of the weave is important for this body of work. Woven textile can be very simple or incredibly complex\, but relies on the interconnection of warp and weft. In my thinking about this work\, the warp encompasses the themes\, preconditions and constants that create a baseline or continuity for your life; that which will always be with you\, for good or bad. \nThe weft\, the threads that go across the warp\, grow the fabric with each new addition\, pull together the weave and create ever new patterns. These are like new events\, people and circumstances that come and go\, or stay; their contribution growing the weave and creating richness and complexity\, whether they just make a single appearance or are part of a recurring pattern.”\n– Annika Berglund \nIn addition to wall-pieces\, the exhibition will also feature a selection of the artist’s new series of wearable art in felted-wool. \nThe exhibition is on display at The Olivier Cornet Gallery until December 15th.

SUMMARY:Who’ll Care\, Who’ll Even Remember? In Memoriam John Balance
DESCRIPTION:Who’ll Care\, Who’ll Even Remember? is an art exhibition honouring the late influential musician and artist John Balance\, best known as a co-founder of the experimental music group Coil\, in collaboration with his partner Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson. He was responsible for the majority of Coil’s vocals\, lyrics and chants\, along with synthesizers and various other instruments both commonplace and esoteric. Outside Coil he collaborated with Cultural Amnesia\, Nurse with Wound\, Death in June\, Psychic TV\, Current 93\, produced several Nine Inch Nails remixes and wrote soundtracks\, most notably for Derek Jaman’s Blue. \n \nThe exhibition marks the 20th anniversary of his premature passing\, and will have two primary influences: archival and contemporary. The Holding Bones lovingly recalls a host of characters – songsters\, storytellers and mischief makers.\n\n\n\nA new original piece from Púca for adults The Holding Bones is a fitting celebration of Samhain\, All Soul’s and The Day of the Dead. At this time of year\, they say\, the veil between our world and the next is at its thinnest. Once we would have set an extra place at the table\, left the door unlocked and lit a candle for each of our loved lost kin at Halloween and remembered our dearly departed throughout the month of November.\n\nSince 1997\, award winning Púca Puppets have been producing shows for adults and children from Ballymun to Bangkok\, in theatres\, canals and other ordinary and extraordinary places. In this new show\, Lawlor\, veteran performer from Púca for nearly 30 years\, counts her ancestors on her very bones and brings them back to life on stage. Set in her studio she draws upon her skills as a puppet maker and visual artist to enrich the tale she has to tell\, as funny as it is deeply moving. In paying playful homage to her ancestors Niamh Lawlor contemplates the purpose of life. Her life.\n\nVital theatrical storytelling invites you to meditate on family\, memory and rituals of grieving and how to embrace the bittersweet turns of the cycle of life.\n\nThis will be among the opening performances of a very personal yet universal show that has been crafted over several years\, assisted by support from The Arts Council\, dlr County Council\, South Dublin Live a South Dublin County Council Arts Office initiative\, Pavilion Studio and the Mermaid Arts Centre\, Draíocht and Civic Theatres. Those frenzied pioneers at Foggy Notions have once again facilitated an evening for the Guatemalan cello wǔnderkind to deliver an absolutely spellbinding meditation\, echoing her work with Belafonte Sensacional and Claire Rousay\, and the experie-metal supergroup she spearheads\, Amor Muere. At times recalling the heady peaks post-rock overlords Godspeed You! Black Emperor\, which is no easy mission for a trio\, the performance made me a lifelong fan. SUMMARY:A Musical Instrument - Justin Fitzpatrick
DESCRIPTION:Kerlin Gallery is justifiably excited to present A Musical Instrument\, the first solo exhibition in Ireland by Justin Fitzpatrick. \nThe title A Musical Instrument references a poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning\, in which the pagan god Pan transforms a reed from the riverbed into a panpipe\, not knowing the pain caused by ‘Making a poet out of a man’. Music-playing\, and by extension\, all creative expression\, is positioned as something mediumistic\, involuntary\, and yet also a source of struggle. In Fitzpatrick’s paintings\, however\, it also appears to foster a kind of connectivity: spines become injected with musical notes; bodies seem to communicate through diagrammatic wave particles; tangled webs of veins\, nerves\, and arteries imply a porosity of self\, a consciousness that expands beyond our physical bodies. \nIn Fitzpatrick’s paintings\, figurative forms appear enmeshed within complex systems of processes\, sounds\, memories\, and ideas. Bodies morph into musical and mechanical apparatus\, while objects become animated or anthropomorphic. In one painting\, a human heart is swapped for a glass armonica\, an 18th-century instrument with melancholic tones once thought to induce madness. In another\, a masked figure plucks at the strings of a suspension bridge\, becoming a self-playing Aeolian harp. \nA Musical Instrument by Justin Fitzpatrick runs at the Kerlin Gallery from 25 Octobr to 23 November. DESCRIPTION:The Red Line Book Festival is a celebration of literature\, storytelling\, and creativity and has grown to become one of the highlights of the cultural calendar. It offers an incredible opportunity to connect with the written word in its many forms whether you’re a reader\, writer\, or simply a lover of stories. From engaging discussions with authors to exciting workshops and performances\, this festival creates a space for reflection\, imagination\, and community. \nThe festival also aims to foster local writing talent\, with a range of writing workshops in different genres taking place in the city’s libraries\, as well as a Comedian in Residence programme with Sharon Mannion which will mentor participants in a series of workshops looking at all aspects of comedy writing and performance\, culminating in a showcase event during the festival. \nThe festival’s Family Fun Day returns to Tallaght’s cultural quarter on Saturday 19th October\, and promises to be a day of literary magic and Hallowe’en fun for all ages with activities including storytelling sessions\, illustration workshops from top Irish artists working in children’s literature as well as live music\, creative events\, children’s entertainment and lots more. \n‘Tallaween’ will also be unleashed on Saturday 19th bringing the library’s darkest tales to life. DESCRIPTION:Late last year\, an important book found its way into the world\, shining a light on one of the most oppressive prison regimes outside of North Korea. The ever enlightened Gutter Bookshop is hosting a free reading of this incredible tome. \n“An estimated 300\,000 people have been detained or have died in prison since the Syrian uprising broke out. Syrians can be arrested for liking a post on Facebook or for the political activities of a distant relative. They are imprisoned without trial\, and tortured and starved\, often to death. This book is the first to expose the worst prisons in the Middle East\, if not the world. Running from September 27th to 29th 2024\, the exhibition comprises 8 large-scale photographs that depict a catalogue of increasingly bizarre items for auction\, found objects that Byrne discovered upon moving into his rented apartment. She was the first Poet-in-Residence at the National Library of Ireland from 2021-22. In her role\, she produced a publication of poetry\, maps\, translation\, photography and research notes titled Radical! Women and the Irish Revolution\, a podcast series and a walking tour. Her awards include the Next Generation Artist Award from the Arts Council\, the Newman Fellowship in Creativity\, and the MAKE Theatre Award.\n\n\nDarina Sikmashvili was born in Lubny\, Ukraine\, and raised in Brooklyn\, New York. Her writing has been generously supported by the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Elizabeth George Foundation\, and the Hopwood Awards\, among others. She has received scholarships from the Can Sarrat Writing Residency\, the Laimun Artists’ Residency\, and the Sewanee Writers’ Conference. DESCRIPTION:Laois/ Dublin based visual artist Aisling Conroy has launched a new solo exhibition in one of our favourite independent galleries. In this new body of work\, Conroy explores the metaphysical realm\, following the themes of sound\, vibration and cymatics. Working with paint\, print\, installation\, experimental film and sound\, Conroy coaxes the audience into a journey beyond the visible realm\, cusping on the unseen forces that shape our reality. \n“Throughout my practice I explore the idea of intention\, repetition and reincarnation\, drawing on influences from mystical and visionary art as well as sound and cymatics. My work combines texture\, colour and movement to create a heightened sense of introspection on the nature of existence. DESCRIPTION:Pebbledash Wonderland  is Shane Lynam‘s photographic account of his adopted home city\, Dublin. The exhibition builds on Lynam’s long standing explorations of urban space across Europe\, which has influenced his work toward new subjective and narrative concerns. The exhibition is Lynam’s third major body of work and follows on from his acclaimed book\, ‘Fifty High Seasons’\, considering modernist French resorts (2018)\, and ‘Contours’\, his exhibition in 2013. \n“Pebbledash Wonderland offers a timely reminder that the complex elements of a contemporary city are almost impossible to grasp in their entirety\, but must be felt\, lived\, and recorded\, in small\, seemingly insignificant moments. Returning over and over to the same sites\, Lynam obsessively photographed the city to create a series of subjective\, abstracted spaces that sit somewhere between reality and his own experience. The exhibition features a diverse selection of work from enthusiasts\, clubs and international award winning professionals. Themes on display include landscape\, monochrome\, photojournalism\, portraiture\, creative\, nature\, analogue\, digital and abstract photography. \nThe originality and creativeness of the many imaginative displays will no doubt be greatly appreciated not only by those looking for a fun day out with a great atmosphere in the city but also by anyone who has a keen eye for all things arty. Singular Artists have got you covered. \nWider Than Pictures is fast becoming a summer highlight in Dublin. Taking place in one of the most easily accessible and aesthetic locations in the city – The National Museum of Ireland at Collins Barracks – the series promises an unforgettable music experience a short Luas trip away from the centre of the city. \nThirty-five years since their debut\, Deacon Blue take centre stage on the 23rd. Their 2012 comeback single ‘The Hipsters’ heralded a new lease of life for the group and jump-started a second act that’s seen them more fired up and prolific than ever. Claire Grogan’s Altered Images and hip young Dublin quartet WineMom support. \nJames Blunt headlines on the 24th\, with Gareth Dunlop opening proceedings. With seven albums released since 2004 and over 20 million records sold worldwide\, Blunt’s popularity hasn’t faded and it’s no surprise that this performance has already sold out. \n \nOn August 25th\, The The bring their Ensouled world tour to Dublin\, their first since 2018. Active since 1979\, they’re one of England’s most loved bands. Matt Johnson’s political lyrics have always captured the zeitgeist so it’s a timely return. Local heroes A Lazarus Soul – who have just released their brilliant ‘No Flowers Grow In Cement Gardens’ album –  provide support on the night. \nJames takes over Collin Barracks on the 26th\, with The Zutons in support. Known for their compelling rock anthems like ‘Johnny Yen’ in the 1980s\, James achieved mainstream success with their 1990 album ‘Gold Mother’\, which included their massive hit ‘Sit Down’. When Amy Winehouse covered The Zutons song ‘Valerie’ the royalty cheques poured in and drew attention to one of the UK’s most entertaining bands. Recently reformed\, their appearance guarantees a top night out. \nGossip headline on the 27th\, marking their return with a first album in over a decade\, ‘Real Power’. The album celebrates creative expression while exploring themes of personal trauma.
