SUMMARY:MANY MEs By Rocío Dominguez
DESCRIPTION:Argentinian dance artist Rocío Dominguez reflects on her personal experiences of transit\, loss\, and rebirth. Echoes of a sister’s death\, the lingering wounds of a violent love relationship\, and the ache of a distant home intertwine in this stunning piece of work. In MANY MEs\, Rocío is joined on stage by a hologrammatic version of herself\, created by visual artist Ross Ryder\, a hologram that acts in turns as a memory and a partner. \n \nFellow Argentinian\, music composer Ingrid Bocek has drawn on sounds from Ireland and Argentina\, sounds of water\, and of spoken text\, to create the soundscape for MANY MEs. \nProject Arts Centre – The Space Upstairs \n18th February\, 7:30pm \nTickets: projectartscentre.ie \nFeature image Credit – Patricio Cassinoni

SUMMARY:OUCH™
DESCRIPTION:The blurb says.. OUCH™ are dedicated to sharing memories\, objects\, and other curiosities from the little-known island of Athrú. An island some claim to be found across the Irish Sea\, many have asserted its position amongst the clouds\, leaving others to believe it is accessible through the worship of ancient trees. After centuries of silence\, they have finally developed technology capable of simulating experiences in Athrú. These experiences create memories in our test subjects which can then be converted into digital artifacts known as A-ROMs. (ATHRU-RECOVERED OUCH MEMORIES) \n \nFor the first time\, OUCH™ will be opening its doors and offering an exclusive presentation of this technology in operation. Interested? We think any bill featuring Sloucho\, Rhoshi\, Vaticanjail\, Spooklet\, Rory Sweeney and Brawni is worth it and with feature length mind bending audio-visuals and performances from a long list of pioneering electronic musicians\, creative technicians\, dancers\, and visual artists it sounds like a happening\, happening. \n The Complex\, 12 St Marys Abbey\, Smithfield\, D7 \nSat Feb 15th\, 10pm \nTickets: thecomplex.ie

SUMMARY:Black Church Print Studio Presents Out of Time
DESCRIPTION:Black Church Print Studio presents Out of Time curated by Áine O’Hara\, recipient of Black Church Emerging Curator Award 2025. \n“Rather than bend disabled bodies and minds to meet the clock\, crip time bends the clock to meet disabled bodies and minds” Alison Kafer \nTime is often considered a linear process\, we move from the past to the present and forward to the future. Crip time is a form of time travel. Disability and illness have the ability to pull us out of linear\, progressive time with its standard life stages and thrust us into a realm of erratic acceleration\, tedious delays and sudden endings. Disabled and sick bodies and minds do not often conform to a normative idea of time. \nThe medical terminology of illness attempts to reimpose linearity\, discussing chronic conditions\, progression\, terminal stages\, relapses and phase. But those living in crip time know that experience is never linear and quietly – or not so quietly – resent the calm straightforwardness of those who exist within the confines of normative time. \nAisling Conroy\, An Gee Chan\, Caoimhe Dalton\, Jamila Prowse\, Paul Roy and Catherine Togher-Ward have used printmaking\, painting\, sculpture\, drawing\, mark making\, textiles and video work as an alternative way to keep time\, to communicate and to connect. Time is recorded in movement and creation rather than scheduling\, deadlines and hours. \n \nOut of Time invites the audience out of their daily lives into the world of crip time. Rather than us bending to meet commonplace capitalistic versions of scheduling\, deadlines\, hours\, crip time offers you a glimpse into an alternate timeline. This exhibition aims to give space to sick and disabled creatives\, as well as abled creatives who operate within a non normative idea of time and productivity. \nThis exhibition provides a physical space where rest is prioritised in the centre of Dublin city. \nOut of Time continues at The Library Project  until Wednesday 26 February 2025 and includes a number of associated events including an Artist talk\, Meditation and Sound Bath with artist\, Aisling Conroy\, a Tote Bag Printing Workshop with artist & tutor\, An Gee Chan and ‘Making on Crip Time\,’ an online artist talk by Jamila Prowse. \n \nTo book/register please visit their website page. \nThe Library Project\, 4 Temple Bar\, Dublin 2. Opening hours: Mon – Fri 11 am – 6 pm\, Sat 12 – 6 pm. \nThis exhibition is kindly supported by Dublin City Council and the Arts Council.

SUMMARY:Dalkey Comedy Festival

SUMMARY:Japan - Richard Gorman
DESCRIPTION:Japan presents over two decades of Richard Gorman’s celebrated works on paper\, focusing on the motif of the circle. For over thirty years\, Gorman has been visiting Echizen\, a mountainous region of Japan\, to handcraft washi paper alongside the skilled artisans of the family-run Iwano Heizaburo paper mill. \n \nThe mill uses a traditional technique in which kōzo (mulberry) pulp is boiled\, beaten\, then set in sukibune trays\, before being pressed and dried. In some of Gorman’s works\, gouache is applied to the surface of the finished paper; for others\, Gorman developed a process in which dye is soaked directly into the pulp then shaped in moulds\, allowing for a deeper saturation of colour. In both instances\, Gorman’s bold\, elemental forms enter a playful tension with the tactile\, organic texture of the paper. \n \n25 January – 22 February \nKerlin Gallery Anne’s Lane\, South Anne Street\, Dublin 2 \n 01670 9093   \nkerlingallery.com

DESCRIPTION:When Cork musician Eoin French passed away in August 2024\, the Irish musical community mourned the loss of a giant. As known as Talos\, French departed this mortal coil way\, way too early but leaves a musical legacy that will be cherished by many for years to come. He was also responsible for providing one half of the creative output of the transformative 2022 hit show Accents\, written by Emmet Kirwan. \nPrompted by the birth of Kirwan’s first son\, the actor-writer explores the sounds of our voices and how they define us\, how we’re perceived and how they can give us power\,  a play that takes the form of eight poems delivered against French’s incredible soundtrack. \nThe show has its own unique universe with its own gravitational pull\, with an expanding and contracting celestial rhythm driven by Kirwan\, under the compelling and energetic direction of one of Ireland’s most exciting directors\, Claire O’Reilly. It is Kirwan’s Big Bang stage presence\, his pulsating life-affirming energies through words and movement that make this show a must for your new year outing. \nAccompanied by the amazing musical talents of Ben Bix and Brian (The Line) Dillon\, two classically trained musicians and members of the experimental electronic super group Melty Brains. Through their multi-instrumental talents they bring Eoin’s exquisite score to life. \nAmbassador Theatre\, Dublin\nThursday 16 + Friday 17 + Saturday 18 January @ 7.30pm\nTickets: €31.25/€50 + booking fee \nAmbassador Box Office – ticketmaster.ie

SUMMARY:Fergus Feehily - Fortune House
DESCRIPTION:Dubliner Fergus Feehily returns from his current Berlin homestead to present an exhibition that focuses on place and illumination. The exhibition is situated in deep winter\, taking place on both sides of the solstice while making associations with places as far-reaching as the megalithic site of Newgrange and the neon streets of Shinjuku\, Tokyo. The title\, Fortune House\, conjures a vision of a site where luck\, prosperity\, or a glimpse into the future might be found. For this exhibition\, a new artist’s book\, The Horse and The Rider\, brings together many reflections on thinking about and experiencing art\, and alternative ways of seeing and understanding artistic values. \nFeehily’s self-reflective writing moves between disciplines\, chronologies and geographies. Through these compelling connections\, between wandering thoughts and the real world\, Feehily’s paintings are formed somewhere between the material and magical. \n5 – 9 Temple Bar\, Dublin 2\, D02 AC84 \nThe exhibition runs at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios until February 23rd. \nTuesday to Friday\, 11am – 6pm\, Saturday + Sunday\, 12pm – 4pm

SUMMARY:Zodiac Netsuke: Animals of the Japanese Zodiac
DESCRIPTION:On display for the first time in over a decade\, Netsuke are small\, intricately carved sculptures originating in 17th century Japan. Originally simple button fasteners\, used to secure pouches\, inrō (compartmented boxes)\, and smoking or writing accessories to sashes\, they quickly evolved to become fashion statements and platforms for intricate design and storytelling. The netsuke in Chester Beatty’s collection date from the 18th and 19th centuries and depict the twelve zodiac animals\, celebrated in Japan during New Year. \n \nThese beautifully carved pieces offer insights into the animals’ symbolic meanings and their place in Japanese culture. The exhibition also creates a unique connection by exploring parallels between Japanese zodiac animals\, Irish folklore and the natural sciences. \nChester Beatty Library\, Dublin Castle\, Dublin 2\, D02 AD92 \nUntil March 23rd. SUMMARY:Concert For Appalachia
DESCRIPTION:The Appalachian Mountains in the United States have long-standing ties with Ireland – Appalachian old-time and bluegrass music echoes the tones\, ballads\, and instruments of Irish trad. These areas share history\, song and background in a trans-Atlantic connection. \nThe Appalachian region of North Carolina was destroyed by Hurricane Helene\, a once in a thousand year weather event – a hurricane seven hours from the ocean. Rivers typically 20 ft. wide became 1000 ft.\, sweeping away homes\, roads\, schools and entire communities and leaving hundreds dead and thousands homeless. \nOn 16 December\, Ireland is offering support for the Appalachian mountain region with a night of music and poetry benefitting BeLoved Asheville\, a mutual aid social justice charity leading recovery efforts and creating housing for thousands of people displaced by the raging flood waters and landslides. \n \nThis event is headlined by Grammy\, Pulitzer Prize\, and MacArthur Genius Grant winner Rhiannon Giddens. Based in Limerick\, Giddens is a visionary musician who co-founded the Carolina Chocolate Drops\, and is a two-time GRAMMY winner\, with nine additional nominations for her work as a soloist and collaborator. She will be performing with Ireland-renowned Congolese guitarist Niwel Tsumbu. \n \nOther contributing artists include Irish soul vocal royalty Mary Coughlan; I Draw Slow\, a Dublin-based group sitting squarely at the intersection of Irish and Appalachian music; Enda Scahill\, four-time All-Ireland Champion in banjo with Simon Crehan; Loah\, creator and queen of ‘Art Soul’ music which blends West African\, soul\, and Irish traditional music; and Erin Fornoff\, Appalachian Irish poet. \n \nOrganizer Erin Fornoff said\, “There are deeply held ties between Appalachia and Ireland. The thing both places have in their DNA is a passion for helping others\, even across the pond.’’ \n \nTickets are priced at €28. The show will be held at Whelan’s on MondayDecember 16th. Doors open at 19:30.

SUMMARY:IFI Kinopolis 2024
DESCRIPTION:The IFI’s annual celebration of Polish cinema returns with an extremely strong line-up of films that serves as a snapshot of not just the best of new Polish cinema\, but also of a society that\, like that of Ireland\, has become increasingly diversified and enriched by the arrival\, acceptance\, and integration of the richness of other cultures into their own. This year’s festival begins with The Girl with The Needle\, a Danish story told by a Polish director with Swedish roots; Minghun sees the observation of Chinese custom by Polish loved ones; and the harrowing\, excellent People is\, sadly\, well-named in its depiction of the Ukrainian conflict that may be all too horrifyingly familiar to those fleeing other international assaults. \n \nOn the lighter side\, we offer the heart-warming tales of a grumpy postman and a couple trying to fall in love with each other again in Sparrow and It’s Not My Film\, and a classic comedy featuring a titan of Polish acting\, with the late Jerzy Stuhr in Sexmission. We look forward to welcoming audiences to these engaging and thought-provoking films. \nIFI\, December 5th – 8th 2024 \nifi.ie/kinopolis

SUMMARY:It’s Always Your Bleedin’ Own
DESCRIPTION:Everyone’s saying Dublin is Dead. That Anna Liffey finally choked on her diet of aparthotels\, luxury student accommodation and oat iced flat whites\, before drowning herself in the fountain we dumped her in. \nWell\, everyone is WRONG\, honey! Because BREADLINE brings ‘It’s Always Your Bleedin’ Own’ to Project Arts Centre this December.  A celebration of the beating heart of Dublin’s inner city\, ‘It’s Always Your Bleedin’ Own’ is the unfiltered\, hilarious\, and gut-punching story of the intertwined lives of Kian\, Amber & Dazzy. \nIt’s time to look past the riots and narratives that are sold to you about D1 and come and hear the real story – where resilience meets humour and grit meets glamour.  It’s Always Your Bleedin’ Own is both a cautionary tale and a love letter to Dublin’s North Inner City\, as the play follows the lives of three big characters from Dublin’s North Inner City. Lower the rents\, open the clubs and let them have a bop! \nThe Plot \nAmber Greene’s wedding to Big Mick from the RA is fast approaching and she hasn’t found the most important piece of the puzzle – the guna.  She’s her eyes set on Central Saint Martins graduate and Dublin’s homegrown talent Kian Harris – or “the rough and ready lovechild of John Galliano and Alexander McQueen” as British Vogue have christened him. Kian is apprehensive about being brought back across the Irish Sea and back to his past but Amber is insistent. Will he be able to face his history to deliver a divine gown to D1’s no 1? \nMeanwhile\, Dazzy Whelan is trying to come to terms with the trauma of losing a child and\, at the same time\, jump-start his relationship with Marni Dunleavy (the only jewel in the corned beef faced Dunleavy family crown).  However Dazzy\, like Kian\, has an interest in Amber Greene’s clothes\, but less to do with making them and more to do with taking hers off\, honey. As the plans for Amber’s wedding to Big Mick from the RA get more and more extravagant\, the passion between Amber and Dazzy is also getting more extravagant.  Dazzy thought Amber was just a bit of fun but now\, he thinks he loves her. \nCan D1 handle all the extravagance? \n \nThe Details… \nWritten by TKB\, Directed by Ronan Phelan and starring self-proclaimed townies Ericka Roe\, Lloyd Cooney and Cameron Hogan\, ‘It’s Always Your Bleedin’ Own’ is a tale of family\, friendship\, betrayal\, youth in crisis\, a yearning to escape and a fear of going back.  It’s high octane\, high energy\, high drama and moves at break-neck speed and also acts as a call to get your glad rags on and get out and keep the city lit this Christmas. \nTickets for It’s Always Your Bleedin’ Own at Project Arts Centre range from €16 to €20 and are available now from projectartscentre.ie. \nBreadline in association with Project Arts Centre presents It’s Always Your Bleedin’ Own. Previews Dec 2 & 3rd\, 7.30pm  The play itself runs from Wednesday 4th December 2024 – Saturday December 14th at  7.30pm. Matinee Saturday Dec 14th at 2.30pm\n \nMatinee Note\n \nIt’s Always Your Bleedin’ Own is a standalone show\, but it is also part of the St. May’s Mansions Trilogy that includes Say Nothin’ To No One and Well That’s What I Heard. These plays may live in the same chaotic universe\, but they’re total independent icons. You can see one\, skip another… but wouldn’t it be nice to experience the full trilogy? \nOn Saturday\, 7th December you can go full theatre buff and experience one or both readings of Vol 1 & Vol 2 of the Trilogy before settling in for the show that evening. It’s called making a day of it!  Grab tickets for individual readings for only €10 a pop\, or catch both readings PLUS the production of It’s Always Your Bleedin’ Own for €30. #GerrupHelen

SUMMARY:Burning Realm
DESCRIPTION:Dublin based psychedelic rock outfit Burning Realm released one of this writer’s favourite records of the year in ‘Face The Fire’\, a four song extended play of mountainous riffs\, skewed mythology and Thin Lizzy inspired twin guitar leads. The followed this up with probably my favourite rock show of the year in the Bello Bar. \nCollecting members of No Spill Blood\, Terrordactyl and Realistic Train\, the band infuse their kinetic rock tinged grooves with a punk edge that makes a lot of sense when you consider the band’s pedigree\, serving in Dublin punk legends Puget Sound. \n \nWords: Adhamh O’Caoimh \nBurning Realm play at Anseo\, 18 Camden Street Lower\, Saint Kevin’s\, Dublin 2\, D02 WK72 on Saturday November 30th
