SUMMARY:Zodiac Netsuke: Animals of the Japanese Zodiac
DESCRIPTION:On display for the first time in over a decade\, Netsuke are small\, intricately carved sculptures originating in 17th century Japan. Originally simple button fasteners\, used to secure pouches\, inrō (compartmented boxes)\, and smoking or writing accessories to sashes\, they quickly evolved to become fashion statements and platforms for intricate design and storytelling. The netsuke in Chester Beatty’s collection date from the 18th and 19th centuries and depict the twelve zodiac animals\, celebrated in Japan during New Year. \n \nThese beautifully carved pieces offer insights into the animals’ symbolic meanings and their place in Japanese culture. The exhibition also creates a unique connection by exploring parallels between Japanese zodiac animals\, Irish folklore and the natural sciences. \nChester Beatty Library\, Dublin Castle\, Dublin 2\, D02 AD92 \nUntil March 23rd. Free admission.

SUMMARY:Concert For Appalachia
DESCRIPTION:The Appalachian Mountains in the United States have long-standing ties with Ireland – Appalachian old-time and bluegrass music echoes the tones\, ballads\, and instruments of Irish trad. These areas share history\, song and background in a trans-Atlantic connection. \nThe Appalachian region of North Carolina was destroyed by Hurricane Helene\, a once in a thousand year weather event – a hurricane seven hours from the ocean. Rivers typically 20 ft. wide became 1000 ft.\, sweeping away homes\, roads\, schools and entire communities and leaving hundreds dead and thousands homeless. \nOn 16 December\, Ireland is offering support for the Appalachian mountain region with a night of music and poetry benefitting BeLoved Asheville\, a mutual aid social justice charity leading recovery efforts and creating housing for thousands of people displaced by the raging flood waters and landslides. \n \nThis event is headlined by Grammy\, Pulitzer Prize\, and MacArthur Genius Grant winner Rhiannon Giddens. Based in Limerick\, Giddens is a visionary musician who co-founded the Carolina Chocolate Drops\, and is a two-time GRAMMY winner\, with nine additional nominations for her work as a soloist and collaborator. She will be performing with Ireland-renowned Congolese guitarist Niwel Tsumbu. \n \nOther contributing artists include Irish soul vocal royalty Mary Coughlan; I Draw Slow\, a Dublin-based group sitting squarely at the intersection of Irish and Appalachian music; Enda Scahill\, four-time All-Ireland Champion in banjo with Simon Crehan; Loah\, creator and queen of ‘Art Soul’ music which blends West African\, soul\, and Irish traditional music; and Erin Fornoff\, Appalachian Irish poet. \n \nOrganizer Erin Fornoff said\, “There are deeply held ties between Appalachia and Ireland. The thing both places have in their DNA is a passion for helping others\, even across the pond.’’ \n \nTickets are priced at €28. The show will be held at Whelan’s on MondayDecember 16th. Doors open at 19:30.

SUMMARY:IFI Kinopolis 2024
DESCRIPTION:The IFI’s annual celebration of Polish cinema returns with an extremely strong line-up of films that serves as a snapshot of not just the best of new Polish cinema\, but also of a society that\, like that of Ireland\, has become increasingly diversified and enriched by the arrival\, acceptance\, and integration of the richness of other cultures into their own. This year’s festival begins with The Girl with The Needle\, a Danish story told by a Polish director with Swedish roots; Minghun sees the observation of Chinese custom by Polish loved ones; and the harrowing\, excellent People is\, sadly\, well-named in its depiction of the Ukrainian conflict that may be all too horrifyingly familiar to those fleeing other international assaults. \n \nOn the lighter side\, we offer the heart-warming tales of a grumpy postman and a couple trying to fall in love with each other again in Sparrow and It’s Not My Film\, and a classic comedy featuring a titan of Polish acting\, with the late Jerzy Stuhr in Sexmission. We look forward to welcoming audiences to these engaging and thought-provoking films. \nIFI\, December 5th – 8th 2024 \nifi.ie/kinopolis

SUMMARY:It’s Always Your Bleedin’ Own
DESCRIPTION:Everyone’s saying Dublin is Dead. That Anna Liffey finally choked on her diet of aparthotels\, luxury student accommodation and oat iced flat whites\, before drowning herself in the fountain we dumped her in. \nWell\, everyone is WRONG\, honey! Because BREADLINE brings ‘It’s Always Your Bleedin’ Own’ to Project Arts Centre this December.  A celebration of the beating heart of Dublin’s inner city\, ‘It’s Always Your Bleedin’ Own’ is the unfiltered\, hilarious\, and gut-punching story of the intertwined lives of Kian\, Amber & Dazzy. \nIt’s time to look past the riots and narratives that are sold to you about D1 and come and hear the real story – where resilience meets humour and grit meets glamour.  It’s Always Your Bleedin’ Own is both a cautionary tale and a love letter to Dublin’s North Inner City\, as the play follows the lives of three big characters from Dublin’s North Inner City. Lower the rents\, open the clubs and let them have a bop! \nThe Plot \nAmber Greene’s wedding to Big Mick from the RA is fast approaching and she hasn’t found the most important piece of the puzzle – the guna.  She’s her eyes set on Central Saint Martins graduate and Dublin’s homegrown talent Kian Harris – or “the rough and ready lovechild of John Galliano and Alexander McQueen” as British Vogue have christened him. Kian is apprehensive about being brought back across the Irish Sea and back to his past but Amber is insistent. Will he be able to face his history to deliver a divine gown to D1’s no 1? \nMeanwhile\, Dazzy Whelan is trying to come to terms with the trauma of losing a child and\, at the same time\, jump-start his relationship with Marni Dunleavy (the only jewel in the corned beef faced Dunleavy family crown).  However Dazzy\, like Kian\, has an interest in Amber Greene’s clothes\, but less to do with making them and more to do with taking hers off\, honey. As the plans for Amber’s wedding to Big Mick from the RA get more and more extravagant\, the passion between Amber and Dazzy is also getting more extravagant.  Dazzy thought Amber was just a bit of fun but now\, he thinks he loves her. \nCan D1 handle all the extravagance? \n \nThe Details… \nWritten by TKB\, Directed by Ronan Phelan and starring self-proclaimed townies Ericka Roe\, Lloyd Cooney and Cameron Hogan\, ‘It’s Always Your Bleedin’ Own’ is a tale of family\, friendship\, betrayal\, youth in crisis\, a yearning to escape and a fear of going back.  It’s high octane\, high energy\, high drama and moves at break-neck speed and also acts as a call to get your glad rags on and get out and keep the city lit this Christmas. \nTickets for It’s Always Your Bleedin’ Own at Project Arts Centre range from €16 to €20 and are available now from projectartscentre.ie. \nBreadline in association with Project Arts Centre presents It’s Always Your Bleedin’ Own. Previews Dec 2 & 3rd\, 7.30pm  The play itself runs from Wednesday 4th December 2024 – Saturday December 14th at  7.30pm. Matinee Saturday Dec 14th at 2.30pm\n \nMatinee Note\n \nIt’s Always Your Bleedin’ Own is a standalone show\, but it is also part of the St. May’s Mansions Trilogy that includes Say Nothin’ To No One and Well That’s What I Heard. These plays may live in the same chaotic universe\, but they’re total independent icons. You can see one\, skip another… but wouldn’t it be nice to experience the full trilogy? \nOn Saturday\, 7th December you can go full theatre buff and experience one or both readings of Vol 1 & Vol 2 of the Trilogy before settling in for the show that evening. It’s called making a day of it!  Grab tickets for individual readings for only €10 a pop\, or catch both readings PLUS the production of It’s Always Your Bleedin’ Own for €30. #GerrupHelen

SUMMARY:Burning Realm
DESCRIPTION:Dublin based psychedelic rock outfit Burning Realm released one of this writer’s favourite records of the year in ‘Face The Fire’\, a four song extended play of mountainous riffs\, skewed mythology and Thin Lizzy inspired twin guitar leads. The followed this up with probably my favourite rock show of the year in the Bello Bar. \nCollecting members of No Spill Blood\, Terrordactyl and Realistic Train\, the band infuse their kinetic rock tinged grooves with a punk edge that makes a lot of sense when you consider the band’s pedigree\, serving in Dublin punk legends Puget Sound. \n \nWords: Adhamh O’Caoimh \nBurning Realm play at Anseo\, 18 Camden Street Lower\, Saint Kevin’s\, Dublin 2\, D02 WK72 on Saturday November 30th

SUMMARY:Trawled – When Adventure Becomes Survival
DESCRIPTION:What begins as a thrilling adventure soon spirals into a harrowing tale of survival against all odds. Trawled is a one-man biographical drama set on a prawn trawler. Twenty-five years after his life-changing experience\, Eoin Ryan brings the wild waves of the Coral Sea\, Australia to life in Smock Alley theatre on November 29th & 30th at 8pm. \n\nSet against the meticulously crafted backdrop of a realistic stage\, Trawled is a sixty-minute tour de force of storytelling that unfolds with the cinematic intensity of a blockbuster film.\n\nDue to the content and subject matter of the play it comes with an over 16’s recommendation. The audience will be taken into a rarely seen world of hard labour and even harder fishermen. Drinking\, fighting\, storms and hungry sharks are part of everyday life. What begins as an adventure\, degenerates quickly into a gripping story to stay alive. \nWritten\, produced\, and acted by Eoin Ryan\, Trawled was first published as a book in 2019. In 2022 Eoin performed the story as a TEDx talk. Eoin’s motivation for going on stage and touring is to share the important universal message ‘to ask for help’.  ‘Having never done anything in theatre before 2023\, I still felt compelled to bring this play and message to life’. \nTrawled was shortlisted for the prestigious PopCorn award at Edinburgh fringe festival. And most recently the book has been shortlisted for the CAP award in nonfiction. \n\nTrawled is making waves. Are you ready to come onboard?

SUMMARY:Paul Winstanley - Arcadia
DESCRIPTION:Kerlin Gallery presents a solo exhibition by Paul Winstanley\, comprising a new series of paintings titled Arcadia\, a continuation of his recent series The Falls\, plus the last of his critically acclaimed Veil series\, a signature body of work initiated in 1999. \nTitled Arcadia\, suggesting ‘something ancient being revisited’\, this new body of work looks towards early 19th-century paintings of idyllic mountainous landscapes – pictures that have largely lost their significance through the ‘gauze of history’. Seizing upon the more abstract elements of these works\, Winstanley revisits the genre from a contemporary standpoint – first ‘degrading’ inkjet prints of the source images\, stripping back detail using a process of wax resist\, before recreating them as paintings. Through this process of reinvention\, the landscapes become spatial encounters – removed from the specificity of place\, they instead tune our attention towards atmosphere\, presence\, and spiritual charge\, all while keeping the ‘shadow’ of the original image. \nThe exhibition runs at Kerlin Gallery from November 29th 2024 until January 16th 2025. \nFeature Image: Landscape with Clouds II\, 2024\, oil on panel\, 56 x 42 cm / 22 x 16.5 in

SUMMARY:Dark Blue ANOHNI Sings Lou Reed
DESCRIPTION:This will be special. Two generational voices come together as Anohni takes on Reed’s classic catalogue and transgressive lyrics in her own inimitable style. ANOHNI’s relationship with Lou Reed stretches back over two decades. In 2003\, she was a supporting vocalist on the Animal Serenade tour and performed on a number of tracks on Reed’s Edgar Allan Poe inspired album The Raven. In 2006/2007 she sang backing vocals for Reed’s first full performance of Berlin in New York and Sydney. In addition\, Reed contributed vocals and guitar to ‘Fistful of Love’ from I Am a Bird Now. Across her 30-year career ANOHNI has forged a singular path through popular music\, mirroring Reed’s beguiling musical journey in so many ways.     \n \nNational Concert Hall\, Tues. 26th November 8pm   \nnch.ie

SUMMARY:SACK
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the release of  ‘Wake Up\, People!’ the acclaimed new record from Dublin alternative rock outfit\, Sack\, this headline performance is the largest show to date since the band’s resurrection out of the Pandemic. The new album proved the five piece had not lost a step in the interim\, their tuneful and hook-laden songs invested with a new maturity\, and a wry energy. It has been almost a year since this writer has seen them perform\, but it is one of the shows I am looking forward to the most in a very busy calendar. SUMMARY:Emma
DESCRIPTION:Kate Hamill’s re-telling of the iconic Jane Austen novel Emma plays at the Abbey Theatre this winter. Directed by Claire O’Reilly\, with Toni O’Rourke as the titular Emma\, the production seeks to “rip the bodice of tradition” with a theatrical experience playfully retelling the classic story. O’Reilly also says that “We’re taking a fictional town in a British regency novel\, through an American screwball lens and then setting in the Irish National Theatre with Irish actors\, so it’s amazing”. \nSounds all very Brat like and a heap of fun. Tickets begin pricing at €15\, and the production will continue until 25 January\, 2025. \nEmma Director\, Designer + cast c. SUMMARY:Bicurious
DESCRIPTION:Dublin/Leipzig rock duo Bicurious recently ran an incredibly successful crowdfunding campaign to release their sophomore record\, alongside a slew of celebratory tour dates. \nThe pair\, famed for their frenzied live performances\, mountainous riffs\, Mariana deep grooves and oceanic psychedelia\, are amongst Ireland’s most unique propositions at this juncture. \nTheir hook laden sonic adventures have a tangible joy about them\, and not since Adebisi Shank have I been so compelled and elated to dance. I would urge readers to seek out their brilliant 2021 debut\, ‘(re)constructed’\, which to this day\, years since its release\, has remained a mainstay in my weekly rotation. \nAlongside the excellent news about their campaign\, the band also announced a UK and Irish winter tour\, with Belfast and Cork dates\, alongside a sure to be sold out show at Dublin’s Grand Social on the 21st of November. It is\, without question\, one of this humble writer’s most anticipated releases\, and without doubt\, should be one of yours as well. \nTickets available here. \nWords: Adhamh Ó Caoimh \n@bicuriousbandofficial \nbicuriousbandofficial.com

SUMMARY:Rewilding The Mind with Mánchan Magan
DESCRIPTION:A true national treasure\, Manchán Magan is holding a 70-minute symposium exploring the resurging interest in Irish history\, and the new connection people are feeling with the spirit and the lore of the land of Ireland. \nBeginning with the creation myth and origin story that Irish ancestors have passed down to their forebears\, he examines the mythological and archaeological clues to how our antecedents identified with both the physical realm\, and the magical realms that surround it. \n“Ultimately\, this talk is a celebration of the extraordinary heritage our ancestors have passed down to us and how it can inspire and empower us\, guiding us in how to live\, how to feel and how to relate to the wider world. SUMMARY:An Evening With Nell: A Celebration of the life and work of Nell McCafferty
DESCRIPTION:Nell McCafferty was a uniquely talented writer\, human rights campaigner and committed feminist. She rocked the system. Her ground-breaking writings exposed the injustices of Irish society and class and gender discrimination. It is no understatement to say that Nell changed the position of Irish women in society\, in the workplace and in the home. \nMonday November 18th\, sees her friends gather in the Round Room of the Mansion House to celebrate her life\, work and legacy with a special evening of songs\, readings and recordings of her media appearances over her lifetime. \nHosted by Olivia O’Leary\, the gathering sees a collection of friends\, fans and peers from across Nell’s life reading excerpts from some of her incredible work. These include activists Eamonn McCann\, Bernadette McAliskey\, and Ailbhe Smyth\, journalists and writers Una Mullally\, Evelyn Conlan\, her niece Muire McCallion\, Martina Devlin\, poet Paula Meehan\, trailblazer and filmmaker Lelia Doolan\, filmmaker Margo Harkin and more. Music will be performed by the incomparable Mary Coughlan. \nLifelong friend and event organiser Marie Redmond said “This is a public celebration of Nell.  As well as being an extraordinary talent and activist\, in over 50 years of friendship she taught me about being open\, honest and forthright and to always speak the truth. Nell has the respect of thousands of people in Ireland and beyond\, and I wanted to create an opportunity for us to come together to celebrate the uniquely brilliant talent and person that she was and the impact of her work for the women of Ireland. She was honest\, fearless and kind\, generous\, witty and warm and she changed the very fabric of the Ireland of her time.” \nWith a career spanning 50 years\, Nell’s extraordinary legacy of work includes books such as A Woman to Blame\, In the Eyes of the Law\, Peggy Deery and Nell an Autobiography. \nHer ground-breaking writings on the treatment of those with little resources by the courts exposed the injustices of Irish society and the class discrimination that existed in the Irish legal system. Her dear friend Eamonn McCann described her as ‘an instinctual socialist’. \nShe was kind and generous to those in need and a loyal friend always. She changed the position of women in the workplace and in the home and fought for equal pay and rights for women. She spoke truth to power\, without a thought of the personal consequences. \nNell McCafferty was a trailblazer\, a role model and an icon for generations of Irish feminists with a powerful legacy for us to follow. \nAll are welcome. The event which will be hosted by broadcaster Olivia O’Leary is free but ticketed.  The organisers have extended a special thanks to Dublin City Council for supporting this event.  \nBook Tickets here.

SUMMARY:Annika Berglund - Tapestry
DESCRIPTION:With her recent switch from ceramics to works in felted wool\, Annika Berglund’s practice has gone from strength to strength with her Corona virus piece having been acquired by the National Museum of Ireland for their Covid collection. She has this to say about her exhibition at the Olivier Cornet Gallery: \n“Tapestries show textile as art by displaying it so it can be seen. My work is not woven\, but the idea of the weave is important for this body of work. Woven textile can be very simple or incredibly complex\, but relies on the interconnection of warp and weft. In my thinking about this work\, the warp encompasses the themes\, preconditions and constants that create a baseline or continuity for your life; that which will always be with you\, for good or bad. \nThe weft\, the threads that go across the warp\, grow the fabric with each new addition\, pull together the weave and create ever new patterns. These are like new events\, people and circumstances that come and go\, or stay; their contribution growing the weave and creating richness and complexity\, whether they just make a single appearance or are part of a recurring pattern.”\n– Annika Berglund \nIn addition to wall-pieces\, the exhibition will also feature a selection of the artist’s new series of wearable art in felted-wool. \nThe exhibition is on display at The Olivier Cornet Gallery until December 15th.

DESCRIPTION:Dublin based artist Geraldine Carton has spent two years creating the works for this provocative and beautiful exhibition which celebrate women and their bodies. A series of figurative nude paintings concluding with a Wall of Boobs\, one hundred individual breast portraits. \n“A celebration of sisterhood and imperfection\, this show shines a light on a lived experience so often ignored in Irish society\, that of women. SUMMARY:The Holding Bones
DESCRIPTION:In an artist’s studio\, shadows talk\, objects come alive and she draws her very bones to overcome loss and celebrate love and the cycle of life. The Holding Bones lovingly recalls a host of characters – songsters\, storytellers and mischief makers.\n\n\n\nA new original piece from Púca for adults The Holding Bones is a fitting celebration of Samhain\, All Soul’s and The Day of the Dead. At this time of year\, they say\, the veil between our world and the next is at its thinnest. Once we would have set an extra place at the table\, left the door unlocked and lit a candle for each of our loved lost kin at Halloween and remembered our dearly departed throughout the month of November.\n\nSince 1997\, award winning Púca Puppets have been producing shows for adults and children from Ballymun to Bangkok\, in theatres\, canals and other ordinary and extraordinary places. In this new show\, Lawlor\, veteran performer from Púca for nearly 30 years\, counts her ancestors on her very bones and brings them back to life on stage. Set in her studio she draws upon her skills as a puppet maker and visual artist to enrich the tale she has to tell\, as funny as it is deeply moving. In paying playful homage to her ancestors Niamh Lawlor contemplates the purpose of life. Her life.\n\nVital theatrical storytelling invites you to meditate on family\, memory and rituals of grieving and how to embrace the bittersweet turns of the cycle of life.\n\nThis will be among the opening performances of a very personal yet universal show that has been crafted over several years\, assisted by support from The Arts Council\, dlr County Council\, South Dublin Live a South Dublin County Council Arts Office initiative\, Pavilion Studio and the Mermaid Arts Centre\, Draíocht and Civic Theatres. A work in progress was well received by test audiences who said:\n\n“Outstanding show\, brought back so many memories\, very emotional\, laughed and cried\, great”. \n“What a beautiful piece…it came from the heart and touched my heart… it hit all the senses”\n“Compelling…dancing with life and death and the shadows… Massive round of applause”\n“Poetry and Heart and Soul Food”\n\nWriter / Performer Niamh Lawlor\nDirector Emma Finegan\nProduction Manager\, Stage Management and Operation Aimee Crilly\nLighting Design Colin Doran\nProducer Púca Puppets\nCreated in collaboration with Dramaturg / Director Veronica Coburn; Artist Lian Bell; Sound / Music Composition Sinead Diskin\n\n\nThe Holding Bones Schedule 2024\nRehearsals Supported by Mermaid Arts Centre\, Fringe Lab and The Civic Theatre\n\n\nCivic Theatre Studio\, Tallaght\n30th Oct – 1st Nov 7.30 pm\n2nd Nov 1pm\nBooking: 01 462 7477 civictheatre.ie/\n\nMermaid Arts Centre\, Bray\n12th Nov 8pm\nBooking: 01 272 4030 mermaidartscentre.ie\n\nRiverbank Arts Centre\, Newbridge\n14th Nov 8pm\nBooking: 045 448 327 riverbank\n\nLexicon Studio (next to Cafe) Dún Laoghaire\n15th Nov 3.30 pm and 17th November 2.30 pm with after show discussion.\nBooking: eventbrite.ie The Holding Bones

Those frenzied pioneers at Foggy Notions have once again facilitated an evening for the Guatemalan cello wǔnderkind to deliver an absolutely spellbinding meditation\, echoing her work with Belafonte Sensacional and Claire Rousay\, and the experie-metal supergroup she spearheads\, Amor Muere. At times recalling the heady peaks post-rock overlords Godspeed You! Black Emperor\, which is no easy mission for a trio\, the performance made me a lifelong fan. I hope to see ye at this one. \nWords: Adhamh Ó Caoimh \nMabe Fratti is at Whelans\, Wexford St\, Dublin 2\, at 8pm on Tuesday 29th October \nwhelanslive.com

SUMMARY:A Musical Instrument - Justin Fitzpatrick
DESCRIPTION:Kerlin Gallery is justifiably excited to present A Musical Instrument\, the first solo exhibition in Ireland by Justin Fitzpatrick. \nThe title A Musical Instrument references a poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning\, in which the pagan god Pan transforms a reed from the riverbed into a panpipe\, not knowing the pain caused by ‘Making a poet out of a man’. Music-playing\, and by extension\, all creative expression\, is positioned as something mediumistic\, involuntary\, and yet also a source of struggle. In Fitzpatrick’s paintings\, however\, it also appears to foster a kind of connectivity: spines become injected with musical notes; bodies seem to communicate through diagrammatic wave particles; tangled webs of veins\, nerves\, and arteries imply a porosity of self\, a consciousness that expands beyond our physical bodies. \nIn Fitzpatrick’s paintings\, figurative forms appear enmeshed within complex systems of processes\, sounds\, memories\, and ideas. Bodies morph into musical and mechanical apparatus\, while objects become animated or anthropomorphic. In one painting\, a human heart is swapped for a glass armonica\, an 18th-century instrument with melancholic tones once thought to induce madness. In another\, a masked figure plucks at the strings of a suspension bridge\, becoming a self-playing Aeolian harp. \nA Musical Instrument by Justin Fitzpatrick runs at the Kerlin Gallery from 25 Octobr to 23 November. Opening Reception: Thursday 24 October\, 6–8pm \nFeature Image: The Glass Armonica (Dying at my music)\, 2024\, oil on linen\, oak frame\, 183 x 143 cm framed
