SUMMARY:The Prisoners’ Lens
DESCRIPTION:The OPW presents a new exhibition of secret photographs taken by prisoners using cameras smuggled into Kilmainham Gaol in 1921\, during the War of Independence. \nThis exciting new exhibition\, which highlights the everyday life of prisoners in Kilmainham Gaol\, invites us to see the prison anew\, reminding us of the enduring humanity that can be found in the darkest of places. \nThe photographs featured in ‘The Prisoners’ Lens’ record everyday life in Kilmainham Gaol in 1921. Among the activities they depict are boxing matches\, Irish language classes\, religious services and drama productions. Other photos show the men enjoying the sunshine in the south-facing yards\, cooking food in the kitchen and playing with two dogs they seem to have acquired. \n \nAlso featured are letters written by the prisoners\, including some by a prisoner named Vincie Lawler in which he instructs his mother on how to smuggle in film and developing paper into Kilmainham Gaol by hiding them in a tin of sweets. \nThe prisoners were finally released from Kilmainham Gaol on 8 December 1921 following the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. Their release was filmed by British Pathé News\, making it the earliest known film footage of Kilmainham Gaol. This fascinating newsreel is being shown in the Gaol for the first time as part of this exhibition. \nAdmission to the exhibition is open to the public seven days a week. Steve Reich’s 90th birthday will be celebrated by the Kronos Quartet in a concert focusing on quartets commissioned by Kronos including the seminal Different Trains.  \n \nAn all-star line-up of contemporary jazz masters including Joe Lovano and Jeff “Tain” Watts will pay homage to the staggering legacy of John Coltrane\, in a programme of modern interpretations of his work plus originals inspired by his spirit and music.  \nThe ever probing and experimental hardanger d’amore-fiddle player Caoimhin O Raghallaigh meets fellow sonic navigators Eiko Ishibashi and Jim O’Rourke for an intimate gig @The Studio.  \nComposer and Guitarist Mary Halvorson will play music from her new album “About Ghosts\, and as if not spoiled for choice already\, American band leader\, drummer\, and beat maker\, Makaya McCraven will be on the main stage playing music from his seminal albums “In the Moment”\, “ In these Times” and his latest release\, “Off the Record”. \nnch.ie

DESCRIPTION:To mark the release of the 1926 census\, the National Archives has opened a major exhibition that explores what life was like in the newly independent Ireland of 1926. Using contemporary documents and images\, audio-visual displays and\, above all\, the census returns themselves\, The Story of Us explores the 1926 census to present a picture of life in Ireland in 1926: from sport and entertainment to language\, culture\, religion\, gender and the working lives of the inhabitants of the Irish Free State a century ago. \nThe exhibition will run at Dublin Castle\, opening to the public from 10am to 5pm\, from April 19th until August 15th 2027\, following which the exhibition will visit London and Boston\, before touring Ireland\, as part of a partnership with ten local authorities\, as well as a visit to the National Ploughing Championships in September.

SUMMARY:Gemma Browne - Ashes of Roses
DESCRIPTION:‘Ashes of Roses’\, a pinkish grey colour that provided the name for a well-known 20th century perfume and range of cosmetics by Bourjois of Paris\, has a special resonance for Gemma Browne\, acting as a conduit for the memories that are such an important engine for her creative process. Browne remembers the name from Quentin Crisp’s memoir ‘The Naked Civil Servant‘ in which he recounts that in the 1960s while working in advertising he created a poster for Coty’s ‘Ashes of Roses’. Memory is of course nebulous\, and as far as I can find Coty have never had a product with this name. To paraphrase playwright Tennessee Williams’ tragic heroine Blanche Dubois\, magic is more important than realism…. \n…Flowers are often used as metaphors for young women in poetry and literature. The rapidly fading bloom of a rose and its comparison to the fleeting beauty of youth is contemplated and critiqued by Browne’s paintings. Her pools and patches of pink and brown paint fluidly combine\, like makeup\, to describe the skin of the women\, who in ‘Blossoms’\, ‘Amber’ and ‘True’ stare intensely in close-up. These and the other paintings of young women do not depict individuals\, they are amalgams drawn from found images\, their unsmiling looks atmospherically unsettling alongside the brightly coloured blooms. DESCRIPTION:If your idea of a good afternoon at the cinema involves having your mind pleasantly scrambled\, make tracks for Lighthouse Cinema\, where acclaimed experimental filmmaker Rouzbeh Rashidi is hosting an in-depth three-hour masterclass exploring a decade of his work. \nPart film essay\, part conversation and part deep dive into the creative process\, the session traces the Iranian-Irish filmmaker’s evolution from Only Human (2009) to Luminous Void: Docudrama (2019)\, using clips from eleven feature films to unpack the ideas\, techniques and philosophies behind one of Ireland’s most singular cinematic voices. \nWorking far beyond the conventions of mainstream filmmaking\, Rashidi’s work explores memory\, identity\, exile and perception through dreamlike imagery\, fractured narratives and striking visual experimentation. Expect degraded film textures\, blurred realities and plenty to ponder long after the credits roll. \nThe afternoon wraps up with an extended audience Q&A\, offering the chance to delve even deeper into Rashidi’s unique creative world. \nOne for aspiring filmmakers\, devoted cinephiles and those curious about the more adventurous corners of Irish cinema\, this is a rare opportunity to hear directly from an artist whose work continues to challenge how we experience film. \nAugust also sees Rashidi teaching a five-day masterclass at EFS Film School\, Dublin 7 Experimental and Personal Filmmaking.
