SUMMARY:The Prisoners’ Lens
DESCRIPTION:The OPW presents a new exhibition of secret photographs taken by prisoners using cameras smuggled into Kilmainham Gaol in 1921\, during the War of Independence. \nThis exciting new exhibition\, which highlights the everyday life of prisoners in Kilmainham Gaol\, invites us to see the prison anew\, reminding us of the enduring humanity that can be found in the darkest of places. \nThe photographs featured in ‘The Prisoners’ Lens’ record everyday life in Kilmainham Gaol in 1921. Among the activities they depict are boxing matches\, Irish language classes\, religious services and drama productions. Other photos show the men enjoying the sunshine in the south-facing yards\, cooking food in the kitchen and playing with two dogs they seem to have acquired. \n \nAlso featured are letters written by the prisoners\, including some by a prisoner named Vincie Lawler in which he instructs his mother on how to smuggle in film and developing paper into Kilmainham Gaol by hiding them in a tin of sweets. \nThe prisoners were finally released from Kilmainham Gaol on 8 December 1921 following the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. Their release was filmed by British Pathé News\, making it the earliest known film footage of Kilmainham Gaol. This fascinating newsreel is being shown in the Gaol for the first time as part of this exhibition. \nAdmission to the exhibition is open to the public seven days a week. Admission is free. \nImage Caption: Thomas Wall sits in front of laundry drying in a yard of Kilmainham Gaol. Wall was only 16 when imprisoned in Kilmainham and was killed the following year during the Civil War

SUMMARY:Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:The National Concert Hall’s Perspectives series sees many of the leading lights in contemporary music explore the musical present in a series of unique concert experiences. \nBoundaries between genres are beautifully blurred in this daringly curated series. Steve Reich’s 90th birthday will be celebrated by the Kronos Quartet in a concert focusing on quartets commissioned by Kronos including the seminal Different Trains. \n \nAn all-star line-up of contemporary jazz masters including Joe Lovano and Jeff “Tain” Watts will pay homage to the staggering legacy of John Coltrane\, in a programme of modern interpretations of his work plus originals inspired by his spirit and music. \nThe ever probing and experimental hardanger d’amore-fiddle player Caoimhin O Raghallaigh meets fellow sonic navigators Eiko Ishibashi and Jim O’Rourke for an intimate gig @The Studio. \nComposer and Guitarist Mary Halvorson will play music from her new album “About Ghosts\, and as if not spoiled for choice already\, American band leader\, drummer\, and beat maker\, Makaya McCraven will be on the main stage playing music from his seminal albums “In the Moment”\, “ In these Times” and his latest release\, “Off the Record”. \nnch.ie

SUMMARY:The Story Of Us Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:To mark the release of the 1926 census\, the National Archives has opened a major exhibition that explores what life was like in the newly independent Ireland of 1926. Using contemporary documents and images\, audio-visual displays and\, above all\, the census returns themselves\, The Story of Us explores the 1926 census to present a picture of life in Ireland in 1926: from sport and entertainment to language\, culture\, religion\, gender and the working lives of the inhabitants of the Irish Free State a century ago. \nThe exhibition will run at Dublin Castle\, opening to the public from 10am to 5pm\, from April 19th until August 15th 2027\, following which the exhibition will visit London and Boston\, before touring Ireland\, as part of a partnership with ten local authorities\, as well as a visit to the National Ploughing Championships in September.

SUMMARY:3+5 - Evgeniya Martirosyan
DESCRIPTION:A new installation at The Mermaid by Cork-based artist Evgeniya Martirosyan\, presents artworks that examine how knowledge can be manipulated and how information degrades over time. A sculptural installation composed of books in multiple languages\, alongside maps\, personal documents and photographs\, evokes a classroom environment shaped by control and repetition\, yet de-stabilised by corrosion. \nThe exhibition title ‘3+5’ refers to recent events in the artist’s country of origin\, Russia. Following the 2022 escalation of the conflict with Ukraine\, the word “war” was replaced by the phrase “Special Military Operation.” The coded message 3+5 references the structure of the Russian phrase “нет войне”  – “No to War”\, or\, 3+5 letters – which emerged as a substitute for anti-war statements which are currently problematic in Russia. School history textbooks continue to be rewritten in line with state narratives\, while many publications are restricted or removed from circulation. \n3+5 has been produced with the support of an Arts Council Bursary Award\, supported by the National Sculpture Factory\, with the assistance of Zbyszek Owczarek. The exhibition was previously shown at LHQ Gallery\, Co Cork. \nImage: © Jed Niezgoda \nThe exhibition continues at Mermaid Arts Centre until July 18th. \nOpen Monday – Saturday\, 11am – 4pm\, and later on performance evenings.

SUMMARY:Cecilia Danell - The Upside Down World
DESCRIPTION:Last year\, during a forest walk in her homeland of Sweden\, Danell encountered a lake from her childhood. It was uncharacteristically still. Mesmerised by its reflection and an uncanny sense of doubling\, it became the seed and the title painting of the show. These large-scale works ask us to look anew at what’s familiar\, at what we think we know about everything we encounter. \nThe sense of being absent from Sweden for so long has led to Danell reimagining its arboreal landscape as a place of contrasts: the hyper-reality of nature\, but with an echo of Sci-Fi. In Immensity Made Manifold\, an upended tree resembles a multi-tentacled creature. The palette reflects this strangeness – a lilac sky\, rose-streaked tree-bark – an accumulation of hundreds of shades. Danell had an early interest in Colour Theory\, and believes her work has gotten progressively more experimental with colour over the years. \nWithin these green dome settings\, vertical daubs in neon shades appear\, which for Danell\, represent a gravitational pull. But there are invaders too: hunters who build blinds and desecrate rocks with instructions: Stå Här (‘Stand Here’). In Into the Unknown\, an otherwise bucolic scene is interrupted by a yellow arrow defacing the trunk of a tree. Herein lies another conflict: the genuine human need to map and carve out a place in the world\, and the artificial\, intrusive branding of nature by hunters. – Extract from An Accompanying Text written by Sinéad Gleeson \nOpening Reception takes place on Thursday May 28th at 5.30pm. The exhibition runs until June 27th\, 2026 at Kevin Kavanagh\, Dublin \nCecilia Danell (b.1985) is a Swedish-born\, Ireland-based painter with a multidisciplinary practice that incorporates sculpture\, film\, and textiles. \nRecent exhibitions include: EXPO Chicago (solo\, 2026)\, Kevin Kavanagh\, Chicago\, USA\, ‘These Magnetic Magnitudes’ (solo)\, Solstice Arts Centre\, Navan\, Curated by Brenda McParland (2025)\, ’In Bloom’ 532 Gallery Jaeckel (Basel\, 2025)\, ‘Salong Östergötland’ Linköping Konsthall (Sweden\, 2025)\, and ‘Mise en scène’\, Centre Culturel Irlandais\, Paris (2021). \nHer work is in the collections of The Arts Council of Ireland\, The Office of Public Works\, Trinity College Dublin\, The Cleveland Clinic\, USA\, Fidelity Investments\, Boston\, USA\, University College Cork\, Ballinglen Arts Foundation\, Galway City Council\, Wexford County Council\, Region Kalmar\, Sweden and Motala Municipal Council\, Sweden as well as private collections in Ireland\, UK\, Sweden\, Canada\, France\, Spain\, United States and Norway.
