DESCRIPTION:Contemporary Irish artist Karen McLaughlin presents Hidden Light\, a solo exhibition of more than 30 contemporary abstract paintings. \nWorking through abstraction\, McLaughlin’s paintings consider how memory\, emotion and lived experience shape the way we experience the land around us- and how\, in turn\, the landscape quietly reflects and transforms our inner lives. Richly layered with texture\, gesture and light\, the works invite moments of stillness and contemplation\, encouraging viewers to form their own personal connection with each painting. \nCurated by Dino Notaro\, Hidden Light explores landscape not as a destination\, but as a meeting place between the external world and our own inner experience. The exhibition invites visitors to slow down and reflect on the subtle dialogue between place\, memory and self. \nAbout The Artist  \nKaren McLaughlin is a contemporary Irish artist based between Dublin and the Inishowen Peninsula\, County Donegal. Her practice explores the emotional and psychological experience of landscape\, creating paintings that exist between memory\, observation and imagination. \nWorking in both mixed media and acrylic\, McLaughlin develops immersive surfaces where traces of the natural world emerge and recede. Rather than depicting specific places\, her paintings evoke the shifting qualities of light\, weather and atmosphere\, inviting viewers into landscapes that feel both deeply familiar and impossible to fully define. \nThe landscapes of north-west Ireland provide a continual point of departure\, but the work is less concerned with representation than with the experience of being in a place. The horizon becomes a recurring motif not as a destination\, but as a space of possibility\, reflection and quiet transformation. \nThrough an intuitive process of building\, obscuring and revealing\, McLaughlin creates contemplative works that encourage stillness and personal interpretation. SUMMARY:Gemma Browne - Ashes of Roses
DESCRIPTION:‘Ashes of Roses’\, a pinkish grey colour that provided the name for a well-known 20th century perfume and range of cosmetics by Bourjois of Paris\, has a special resonance for Gemma Browne\, acting as a conduit for the memories that are such an important engine for her creative process. Browne remembers the name from Quentin Crisp’s memoir ‘The Naked Civil Servant‘ in which he recounts that in the 1960s while working in advertising he created a poster for Coty’s ‘Ashes of Roses’. Memory is of course nebulous\, and as far as I can find Coty have never had a product with this name. To paraphrase playwright Tennessee Williams’ tragic heroine Blanche Dubois\, magic is more important than realism…. \n…Flowers are often used as metaphors for young women in poetry and literature. The rapidly fading bloom of a rose and its comparison to the fleeting beauty of youth is contemplated and critiqued by Browne’s paintings. Her pools and patches of pink and brown paint fluidly combine\, like makeup\, to describe the skin of the women\, who in ‘Blossoms’\, ‘Amber’ and ‘True’ stare intensely in close-up. These and the other paintings of young women do not depict individuals\, they are amalgams drawn from found images\, their unsmiling looks atmospherically unsettling alongside the brightly coloured blooms. DESCRIPTION:PORTAGE brings together paintings\, sculptural forms\, ceramic vessels\, and sculptural light to explore journeys shaped by wind\, water\, myth\, and memory. \nThe title refers to the act of carrying a boat across land to reach new waters — an enduring image of migration\, resilience\, and the search for new horizons. It echoes Werner Herzog’s film ‘Fitzcarraldo’\, where a steamship is hauled over a mountain in pursuit of an impossible dream. In PORTAGE\, that same gesture becomes a metaphor for movement\, for risk\, and for the persistence required to cross from one world to another. \nAndrew Murphy presents sculptures whittled from native Tasmanian timbers alongside paintings of reconfigured animals and beasts assembled from twigs gathered around his forest home. His works consider ecology\, the boat\, and hybrid forms that emerge in transit.\nMurphy was born in Hobart in 1963\, majored in painting and sculpture at the Tasmanian school of art and has been making and exhibiting art including public sculpture installations\, fire sculpture performances and various residencies over the past few decades. He lives a quiet reclusive life in the bush with the trees and the animals \nMark Redden shows paintings inspired by currach voyages on the Irish coast. The currach is a traditional fishing boat typical of the west coast of Ireland\, which he learned to build as a boy. The work traces a lineage of craft\, labor\, and navigation rooted in regeneration\, reconciliation and wanderlust. \nMark Redden\, The Island of Golden Shields\, oil on linen\, 79 x 79 cm\nBorn in Dublin 1979\, Redden is an Irish visual artist working between Dublin and Barcelona. His practice involves painting\, sculpture and drawing in a labourous process that investigates universal perception\, memory and personal experience. \nWith particular attention to surface quality\, colour\, and composition\, he renders symbolic forms that evolve and mutate in an ever changing environment\, opening pathways to subconscious thoughts. \nAbhainn Wheeler creates ceramic vessels bound to earth and water myths. The forms act as containers — of substance\, of story\, and of the memory carried across generations. \nAbhainn Wheeler\, Clíodhna’s Wave – Tonn Cíodhna\, Vessel 1 Hand coiled Stoneware\, oxidation fired 50cm x 45cm\nBorn in County Wicklow\, Wheeler is an emerging artist recently graduated from CCAD Cork in 2025 and currently works from Throwing Shapes Ceramic Studio as their Graduate in Residence. She is a contemporary ceramic artist\, whose practice is inspired by Ireland’s myths\, ancient folklore\, and the quiet traces of history embedded in the land. Rooted in material exploration and hand-built processes\, these sculptural vessels explore the relationship between place\, memory\, and storytelling\, evoking a sense of ritual\, belonging\, and connection to the natural world. \nGildas O Laoire contributes a series of light sculptures and Verdigris Surface Studies that explore the forces of ocean currents\, trade winds\, and navigation. \nGildas O Laoire\, Global Conveyor\, Copper and sea salt\, 24 x 19 cm\nThrough illumination\, texture\, and structure\, the works evoke guiding lights\, tidal forms and distant horizons\, reflecting the enduring relationship between movement\, orientation\, and the sea. \nBorn in Dublin in 1979\, Gildas studied Furniture Design at TU Dublin and Architectural Model Making at DLIADT before working as a cabinetmaker and establishing his independent practice. The work speaks from the voices of all the 20 or 30 somethings out there\, asking themselves the tough questions and the main one being\, ‘What the hell am I doing?’ Through their sharp wit and courageous vulnerability it will be impossible to not see part of yourself in these characters. \nSuaimhneas theatre company is bringing their play MNÁ to this year’s Edinburgh Fringe festival for five nights at the Greenside Venue on George street from the 18th- 22nd of August. DESCRIPTION:On May 15th\, Russian strikes damaged the Lavra church\, a UNESCO heritage site\, and hit the Dovzhenko Film Studios\, destroying a historic costume collection that formed part of Ukraine’s cinematic legacy. \nAgainst this backdrop\,  Voices of Resistance\, the Ukrainian Film Festival returns to Dublin with a programme showcasing films made and released in the past five years. Through award-winning films\, documentaries\, and Irish-Ukrainian productions\, the festival showcases how culture has become one of Ukraine’s most powerful forms of resistance. \nFrom teenagers coming of age in Kyiv and reflections on school life in Ukraine amid wartime realities\, to a documentary about a beloved cultural icon whose songs continue to inspire generations\, and the story of an unlikely dreamer searching for connection at the edge of the universe\, these films offer a glimpse into the contemporary realities of Ukrainians beyond the headlines. \nThese contemporary stories\, all released since 2022\, reveal how in times of war\, creativity becomes an act of resilience. Together\, they celebrate the strength of individuals and communities who continue to create\, imagine\, and carry their culture forward despite more than four years of full-scale war. SUMMARY:Eating The Sun - Leliana Zeic
DESCRIPTION:Polish-born and Warsaw-based artist Liliana Zeic works with craft techniques\, video\, photography\, objects\, and text\, creating intermedia and performative projects based on artistic research. Since 2020\, she has increasingly turned to craft-based methods\, primarily developing her own woodwork technique rooted in intarsia. \nHer artistic practice is grounded in queer feminism and queer ecology\, most recently focusing on queer histories through the lens of folk mythology. 𝘌𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘶𝘯 is part of a research-led curatorial project\, developed in collaboration with Dr Aleksandra Gajowy (UCD)\, designed to introduce Central and Eastern European (CEE) lesbian artistic practices to an Irish audience. \nIn her work Zjadaczki Słońca (The Sun Eaters)\, Zeic’s ongoing preoccupations with the natural\, the lesbian\, and the historical/ mythical come together to mark the locality of the body. Nature here does not signify the biological – rather\, it points to the connectedness of the body with the history of the soil where from it comes. Histories of land and soil have long been interconnected with those of gender\, body\, and sexuality\, these connections marked as much in spiritual practices as in legislative regulations. The natural materials Zeic uses in her work – the wood\, the hay\, the nettle ropes – come to articulate a rootedness of the desiring\, transhistorical lesbian gaze in its locality. \n\n\n\n\nSpeaking on bringing her work to Ireland\, artist Liliana Ziec says: “I’m incredibly excited to be working with Project Arts Centre. It’s a collaboration I’ve immersed myself in over the past few months\, and I can’t wait to see how my work resonates in this space and in this city. I’m also deeply curious about the institution itself and feel honoured to be part of its programme.” \nThe exhibition is kindly supported by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute\, Poland\, and the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Dublin. Project Arts Centre is proudly supported by The Arts Council and Dublin City Council. \nThe exhibition continues until 18 July\, and before it closes\, The Project will be hosting one final closing event to celebrate it on Friday 17 July. DESCRIPTION:Shipwrecks of Dublin Bay\, an exhibition currently showing in the Dublin Port Substation\, is a partnership between Dublin Port and the National Monuments Service highlighting over 900 known wrecks that sit out in Dublin Bay.\nThe exhibition forms part of the Port’s summer events programme for 2026 aiming to foster better Port-City integration and highlight the deep historical connections between the Port and Dublin City. \nShipwrecks of Dublin Bay runs from 18 June – 18 September 2026 in the Dublin Port Substation on East Wall Road and is free for the public\, open Wednesdays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays from 11am – 3pm.

DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed vocalist and composer Laoise Leahy presents Breathe In & Let Go\, a special summer afternoon concert performed with master pianist Johnny Taylor in the intimate Cobblestone venue. \n\n\n\nA native of Cork and a contemporary voice lecturer at MTU Cork School of Music\,  Laoise is known for her rich\, soulful tone and her instinctive\, fearless approach to  improvisation. Her music moves fluidly between jazz\, soul\, folk and contemporary  sound worlds\, guided by a deep curiosity about connection\, presence and what it  means to be human. \nFor this performance\, she is joined by her longtime collaborator Johnny Taylor on piano\, bringing an intuitive musical chemistry and a shared sensitivity to space\, texture and groove. \nThe music for this concert draws from her recently released EP ‘Breathe In & Let  Go’ alongside reimagined\, revered jazz tunes\, newly composed songs and open  improvisations. SUMMARY:Cecilia Danell - The Upside Down World
DESCRIPTION:Last year\, during a forest walk in her homeland of Sweden\, Danell encountered a lake from her childhood. It was uncharacteristically still. Mesmerised by its reflection and an uncanny sense of doubling\, it became the seed and the title painting of the show. These large-scale works ask us to look anew at what’s familiar\, at what we think we know about everything we encounter. \nThe sense of being absent from Sweden for so long has led to Danell reimagining its arboreal landscape as a place of contrasts: the hyper-reality of nature\, but with an echo of Sci-Fi. In Immensity Made Manifold\, an upended tree resembles a multi-tentacled creature. The palette reflects this strangeness – a lilac sky\, rose-streaked tree-bark – an accumulation of hundreds of shades. Danell had an early interest in Colour Theory\, and believes her work has gotten progressively more experimental with colour over the years. \nWithin these green dome settings\, vertical daubs in neon shades appear\, which for Danell\, represent a gravitational pull. But there are invaders too: hunters who build blinds and desecrate rocks with instructions: Stå Här (‘Stand Here’). In Into the Unknown\, an otherwise bucolic scene is interrupted by a yellow arrow defacing the trunk of a tree. Herein lies another conflict: the genuine human need to map and carve out a place in the world\, and the artificial\, intrusive branding of nature by hunters. – Extract from An Accompanying Text written by Sinéad Gleeson \nOpening Reception takes place on Thursday May 28th at 5.30pm. SUMMARY:3+5 - Evgeniya Martirosyan
DESCRIPTION:A new installation at The Mermaid by Cork-based artist Evgeniya Martirosyan\, presents artworks that examine how knowledge can be manipulated and how information degrades over time. A sculptural installation composed of books in multiple languages\, alongside maps\, personal documents and photographs\, evokes a classroom environment shaped by control and repetition\, yet de-stabilised by corrosion. \nThe exhibition title ‘3+5’ refers to recent events in the artist’s country of origin\, Russia. Following the 2022 escalation of the conflict with Ukraine\, the word “war” was replaced by the phrase “Special Military Operation.” The coded message 3+5 references the structure of the Russian phrase “нет войне”  – “No to War”\, or\, 3+5 letters – which emerged as a substitute for anti-war statements which are currently problematic in Russia. School history textbooks continue to be rewritten in line with state narratives\, while many publications are restricted or removed from circulation. \n3+5 has been produced with the support of an Arts Council Bursary Award\, supported by the National Sculpture Factory\, with the assistance of Zbyszek Owczarek.
