And ultimately what does that say about us as a society? \nDirected by Jodie Sweeeney\, Groceries\, a one-woman show starring actress Francesca Garry as Cheyrl the woman merely trying to make it to the exit of the supermarket\, is about something more than just shopping. \nGroceries takes place at the Pearse Centre on July 24th.  Find tickets here. \nFrancesca Garry is a multi-talented actor\,singer/songwriter and co-founder of Suaimhneas Theatre Company alongside Jodie Sweeney. Not only is she a powerhouse to watch on stage she has a luminous energy in whatever role she plays. Both creatives are thrilled to be in the Sprout studio and dive into the world of MNÁ where nothing is quite clear but everything is overwhelming. The work speaks from the voices of all the 20 or 30 somethings out there\, asking themselves the tough questions and the main one being\, ‘What the hell am I doing?’ Through their sharp wit and courageous vulnerability it will be impossible to not see part of yourself in these characters. \nSuaimhneas theatre company is bringing their play MNÁ to this year’s Edinburgh Fringe festival for five nights at the Greenside Venue on George street from the 18th- 22nd of August. DESCRIPTION:This Saturday July 11th sees a vibrant celebration of hair culture with the launch of EWA IRUN’s photobook and exhibition at The Library Project. \n\n\n\nThe event celebrates the artistry\, heritage\, and cultural power of Black hair with the official launch of ẸWÁ ÍRÚN (The Beauty of Hair)\, a new photobook photographed in London and Dublin. \nTaking readers on a visual journey exploring the cultural significance\, traditions\, and contemporary expressions of Black hair\, the book features collaborations with hairstylists\, trichologists\, and creatives\, the project celebrates the artistry\, identity\, and deep-rooted heritage woven into Black hair culture. \nThis event welcomes creatives\, photographers\, hairstylists\, trichologists\, film and media professionals\, educators\, students\, and anyone with an interest in Black hair culture\, heritage\, and identity. Whether you’re coming to celebrate\, learn\, or make new connections\, this evening promises inspiration\, conversation\, and community. \nThe event kicks off with complimentary drinks and light bites inspired by Nigerian flavours\, with an opportunity to view the exhibition display including large-scale photographs and installations from the book. \nThis is followed by a Panel Discussion featuring hairstylists and trichologists on The Art & Science of Afro Hairstyles. There’ll also be a  special performance by a Black film industry hairstylist and model/actor demonstrating Afro hair styling techniques used in film and television. \nẸWÁ ÍRÚN is more than a book launch—it’s a celebration of Black hair as art\, culture\, heritage\, and storytelling. SUMMARY:Untold Ukraine - Voices of Resistance
DESCRIPTION:On May 15th\, Russian strikes damaged the Lavra church\, a UNESCO heritage site\, and hit the Dovzhenko Film Studios\, destroying a historic costume collection that formed part of Ukraine’s cinematic legacy. \nAgainst this backdrop\,  Voices of Resistance\, the Ukrainian Film Festival returns to Dublin with a programme showcasing films made and released in the past five years. Through award-winning films\, documentaries\, and Irish-Ukrainian productions\, the festival showcases how culture has become one of Ukraine’s most powerful forms of resistance. \nFrom teenagers coming of age in Kyiv and reflections on school life in Ukraine amid wartime realities\, to a documentary about a beloved cultural icon whose songs continue to inspire generations\, and the story of an unlikely dreamer searching for connection at the edge of the universe\, these films offer a glimpse into the contemporary realities of Ukrainians beyond the headlines. \nThese contemporary stories\, all released since 2022\, reveal how in times of war\, creativity becomes an act of resilience. Together\, they celebrate the strength of individuals and communities who continue to create\, imagine\, and carry their culture forward despite more than four years of full-scale war. More than stories of survival\, these are stories of cultural resistance. \n \nThe Festival runs from July 2nd – 6th in partnership with the Irish Film Institute and the Embassy of Ukraine in Ireland. SUMMARY:Eating The Sun - Leliana Zeic
DESCRIPTION:Polish-born and Warsaw-based artist Liliana Zeic works with craft techniques\, video\, photography\, objects\, and text\, creating intermedia and performative projects based on artistic research. Since 2020\, she has increasingly turned to craft-based methods\, primarily developing her own woodwork technique rooted in intarsia. \nHer artistic practice is grounded in queer feminism and queer ecology\, most recently focusing on queer histories through the lens of folk mythology. 𝘌𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘶𝘯 is part of a research-led curatorial project\, developed in collaboration with Dr Aleksandra Gajowy (UCD)\, designed to introduce Central and Eastern European (CEE) lesbian artistic practices to an Irish audience. \nIn her work Zjadaczki Słońca (The Sun Eaters)\, Zeic’s ongoing preoccupations with the natural\, the lesbian\, and the historical/ mythical come together to mark the locality of the body. Nature here does not signify the biological – rather\, it points to the connectedness of the body with the history of the soil where from it comes. Histories of land and soil have long been interconnected with those of gender\, body\, and sexuality\, these connections marked as much in spiritual practices as in legislative regulations. The natural materials Zeic uses in her work – the wood\, the hay\, the nettle ropes – come to articulate a rootedness of the desiring\, transhistorical lesbian gaze in its locality. \n\n\n\n\nSpeaking on bringing her work to Ireland\, artist Liliana Ziec says: “I’m incredibly excited to be working with Project Arts Centre. It’s a collaboration I’ve immersed myself in over the past few months\, and I can’t wait to see how my work resonates in this space and in this city. I’m also deeply curious about the institution itself and feel honoured to be part of its programme.” \nThe exhibition is kindly supported by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute\, Poland\, and the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Dublin. Project Arts Centre is proudly supported by The Arts Council and Dublin City Council. \nThe exhibition continues until 18 July\, and before it closes\, The Project will be hosting one final closing event to celebrate it on Friday 17 July. SUMMARY:Cecilia Danell - The Upside Down World
DESCRIPTION:Last year\, during a forest walk in her homeland of Sweden\, Danell encountered a lake from her childhood. It was uncharacteristically still. Mesmerised by its reflection and an uncanny sense of doubling\, it became the seed and the title painting of the show. These large-scale works ask us to look anew at what’s familiar\, at what we think we know about everything we encounter. \nThe sense of being absent from Sweden for so long has led to Danell reimagining its arboreal landscape as a place of contrasts: the hyper-reality of nature\, but with an echo of Sci-Fi. In Immensity Made Manifold\, an upended tree resembles a multi-tentacled creature. The palette reflects this strangeness – a lilac sky\, rose-streaked tree-bark – an accumulation of hundreds of shades. Danell had an early interest in Colour Theory\, and believes her work has gotten progressively more experimental with colour over the years. \nWithin these green dome settings\, vertical daubs in neon shades appear\, which for Danell\, represent a gravitational pull. But there are invaders too: hunters who build blinds and desecrate rocks with instructions: Stå Här (‘Stand Here’). In Into the Unknown\, an otherwise bucolic scene is interrupted by a yellow arrow defacing the trunk of a tree. Herein lies another conflict: the genuine human need to map and carve out a place in the world\, and the artificial\, intrusive branding of nature by hunters. – Extract from An Accompanying Text written by Sinéad Gleeson \nOpening Reception takes place on Thursday May 28th at 5.30pm. DESCRIPTION:A new installation at The Mermaid by Cork-based artist Evgeniya Martirosyan\, presents artworks that examine how knowledge can be manipulated and how information degrades over time. A sculptural installation composed of books in multiple languages\, alongside maps\, personal documents and photographs\, evokes a classroom environment shaped by control and repetition\, yet de-stabilised by corrosion. \nThe exhibition title ‘3+5’ refers to recent events in the artist’s country of origin\, Russia. Following the 2022 escalation of the conflict with Ukraine\, the word “war” was replaced by the phrase “Special Military Operation.” The coded message 3+5 references the structure of the Russian phrase “нет войне”  – “No to War”\, or\, 3+5 letters – which emerged as a substitute for anti-war statements which are currently problematic in Russia. School history textbooks continue to be rewritten in line with state narratives\, while many publications are restricted or removed from circulation. \n3+5 has been produced with the support of an Arts Council Bursary Award\, supported by the National Sculpture Factory\, with the assistance of Zbyszek Owczarek. Founded in 1951  for the employees of the Guinness brewery\, The Guinness Choir is one of the oldest mixed voice choirs in Dublin and was one of the earliest workplace choirs in Ireland. \nOver the years\, the choir has given many hundreds of amateur singers the opportunity and privilege to perform these works with professional orchestras and soloists in major venues in Ireland and abroad. \nAs part of celevbrations to mark its 75th anniversary\, the choir has commissioned a contemporary choral cantata to celebrate this great city\, their Liberties’ origins\, and their musical tradition. \nThe text for ‘The City of Our Dreaming’ is an original poem by Paula Meehan\, commissioned by the choir and composed for choir by Seán Doherty\, a remarkable poem distilled into a warm\, sensitive\, and exciting choral experience. \nThe concert\, on Thursday\, May 7th\, in St. Patrick’s Cathedral\, will be the world premiere of this unique composition and a highlight of the Culture Date with Dublin 8 Festival. This year\, CDD8 strives to uncover the historical threads that envelop Dublin 8 – from the curious and the captivating\, to the sentimental and moving – and understand what it means for us to reshape them in our shared contemporary psyche.  \nCentral themes include exploring the Songlines of the City – uncovering pathways across the landscape that carry stories – and commemorating the 300th anniversary of Jonathan Swift’s novel ‘Gulliver’s Travels’\, one of the most enduring and influential works of satire in literary history.   \nShowcases highlighting the localised practices of storytelling and spoken-word poetry will take place on both the Saturday and Sunday in the National Stadium.  \n \nThese events will feature a competitive twist and a callback to Dan Donnelly\, one of Dublin’s most renowned sporting celebrities of the nineteenth century\, who had surprisingly strong connections to Dublin 8. The much anticipated event celebrating Dublin’s boxing legends includes a performance by Damien Dempsey at The National Stadium on Saturday\, May 9th. \nElsewhere\, Tom Dunne\, Fiachna O’Braonáin and Alan Connor are set to perform in the Church of St. Catherine & St. James on Wednesday May 6th\, followed by ‘Remembering Ronnie’ performed by singer Phelim Drew on Thursday May 7th. Kerry pop-folk band Simple Things is in action on Friday May 8th\, while Friday\, May 8th\, also sees singer and actress Camille O’Sullivan live at Christ Church Cathedral. \n \nIn addition\, the Late in D8 after dark series will see a showcase of BIMM College graduates alongside late night parties taking place in venues across the district. The majority of these events are free to attend. \nThe Culture Date with Dublin 8 Festival will take place from Monday May 4th – Sunday May 10th. DESCRIPTION:Following hugely successful runs in New York\, Calgary\, London and Melbourne\, The First Bad Man\, a live performance based on a reading of THE FIRST BAD MAN\, a novel by Miranda July returns to Dublin for a limited run as part of Live Collision International Festival. \nKitty Blennerhasset\, John Benno\, Rose McVittie and Freya Golden have recently joined a book club. Their first book is The First Bad Man and every week for a year they keep coming back to it. DESCRIPTION:The Taylor Wessing Irish Photo Prize is a major new annual award established to champion the excellence\, vitality and diversity of contemporary photography in Ireland.  \nThe €10\,000 award has been established to support an artist working in photography or lens based media who identifies as being from an underrepresented background.  \nBringing together new work by photographers and lens-based artists at different stages of their careers\, works in the exhibition are notable for spanning documentary\, portraiture\, conceptual and experimental approaches.  \nThe inaugural event this year sees top honours going to longstanding lensman Conor Horgan\, while Judges’ Selection Awards were presented to Laura Dunwoody and Salem Anowe Chukwuezi. Patryk Gizicki takes home the Photo Bursary. \nSelected from over 1\,300 submissions\, these artists represent the depth\, diversity and ambition of contemporary photographic practice across Ireland today. Their work engages directly with this year’s theme of Community\, reflecting the social and political realities shaping our time. \nWinning and shortlisted works will feature in a public exhibition at Photo Museum Ireland\, Temple Street (Meeting House Square\, Temple Bar\, Dublin 2) from 22 April – 24 May 2026 after which the winning pieces will become part of the Taylor Wessing Irish Photo Prize collection and will be displayed at the Taylor Wessing offices.  \n \nThe exhibition runs at Photo Museum Ireland until May 24th 2026. SUMMARY:Kevin McAleenan - Moment
DESCRIPTION:“Moments arrive unannounced. In the rise of a hill\, the whiteness of a gable end\, the curve of a country road… I know it has arrived when I’m caught in that moment.” \nDrawing from everyday moments that beckon him to stillness and reflection\, artist Kevin McAleenan’s paintings veer between realism and abstraction\, centred thematically around Irish landscapes. Carefully balanced blocks of colour and strong vertical lines provide structure and integrity\, while gentle brushstrokes and tonal shifts give the works movement.  \nMcAleenan has previously exhibited artworks at The Market Place Theatre and Arts Centre in Armagh. He has also exhibited and sold internationally in cities such as New York\, Singapore and Hong Kong. Now he presents this fascinating solo exhibition at Sol Art Gallery.  \nThis exhibition brings together a new body of work in which McAleenan reengages with the quiet moments that shape everyday experience.
