SUMMARY:Scrapefoot
DESCRIPTION:The Ark’s summer show is a collaboration with the award-winning Anu Productions. Promising an immersive adventure where you get to choose your own take on the tale of Goldilocks\, Scrapefoot sees Anu adapt their trade-mark edge for younger minds. Goldilocks has morphed from a fox called Scrapefoot into an old hag\, and finally into the Goldilocks we know today. What remains the same in each version of the story\, is that they each entered a house in the woods (when nobody was home)\, to feast\, sleep and shelter.  \nRuns until August 31

SUMMARY:Brendan Galileo for Europe
DESCRIPTION:We caught this ‘Show in a Bag’ during the Fringe last year and creased ourselves with laughter for the duration of it. We said it was “suffused with wit\, warmth\, hilarity and a truly exceptional performance by Fionn Foley” and predicted great things for it. \nIt went on to win Best Actor and Little Gem at the Fringe awards and makes a welcome return before entering the frey of the Edinburgh Fringe. Brendan Galileo for Europe explores an island’s relationship with a continent\, a community and a contest. \nAs a last ditch effort to save a local music school\, Brendan Galileo is bound for the European Parliament via the Song Contest. We can think of no better way to spend your time. \nDraíocht\, Friday June 14\, 8pm\, €16-€18

SUMMARY:Beginning
DESCRIPTION:After the rather brilliant production of Lucy Kirkwood’s The Children last month\, comes the second instalment of The Gate’s Love and Courage season. David Eldridge’s Beginning is a two-hander exploring the challenges of finding love or\, “sozzled loners seek a connection in a tech age\,” as the Guardian header described it. Starring Marty Rea (Danny) and Eileen Walsh (Laura)\, who is well versed for this role following recent performances in the stellar Catastrophe\, these are the last two souls at a house-warming party. Their performances and interplay are excruciatingly entertaining. \n“I wish I’d met you online. Everything would be so much easier\,” says Danny\, at one stage\, summarising the tragic disconnect of our times facilitated by social media. The perspective of the lost and wounded\, fragile\, man is particularly interesting and carried off with aplomb by Rea. After a killer poster for The Children\, it’s a slight shame this one fails to convey how funny and poignant this production truly is. A double whammy of refreshingly contemporary productions for The Gate. Take a bow! \nUntil Saturday April 20

SUMMARY:Ireland's Call
DESCRIPTION:“Ireland\, Ireland – Together standing tall – Shoulder to shoulder – We’ll answer Ireland’s call.” So goes the chorus to the unofficial national anthem\, whose lyrical claim to national identity is scrutinized in a climactic scene midway through this honest\, hard-hitting play. \nA one-man play written and performed by John Connors\, of RTÉ’s Love/Hate and the film Cardboard Gangsters\, Ireland’s Call explores the bygone misadventures of three northside working-class Dublin friends through the words of James (Connors).  \nTold in the traditional style of seanchaí Irish storytelling\, where crowds would gather round and hang on the storyteller’s every word\, Connors is similarly able to engage the audience and take them on a journey to the point of peak suspension of disbelief. \nSeated in a lone spot lit chair in the centre of the stage\, the Coolock native begins by introducing himself. He dips in and out of memories as he recalls childhood shenanigans with friends that gradually turn to exploits of drug and alcohol fueled good times. But what goes up must come down\, and for James the comedown is fast and hard\, and the people he loves most tumble down along with him.  \nAn auditory adventure that is equally hilarious\, uncomfortable and heartbreaking.  \nDirector Jimmy Smallhorne does a brilliant job of keeping the physical action to a minimum so that each spoken word powerfully expresses the realities of those living life on the margins. Rose Ugoalah \nTwo performances in the Axis 11.30am & 8pm \nAlso in the Viking Theatre\, Clontarf from Monday March 25 to Saturday March 30 \n

SUMMARY:Sure Look It\, Fuck It
DESCRIPTION:First seen as a work in progress in Mindfield at the Electric Picnic before moving on to Thisispopbaby’s mini-festival Where We Live\, Clare Dunne’s spoken-word comedy Sure Look It\, Fuck It finally comes of age and takes to the stage as a fully-fledged production. Missy is a returned emigrant back in town after years of trying to ‘make it’ in New York. As she discovers an Ireland of zero-hour contracts\, pricey pints and living with parents until middle age\, she grapples with job interviews\, inward blues and dancing fools… and figures out what it is she really believes in. \nRuns until Saturday March 23 (Saturday matinee at 2.30pm)

SUMMARY:The Children
DESCRIPTION:Now that everyone in the country has seen The Great Gatsby\, it’s time for The Gate to make way for some fresh productions. Launching their Love and Courage season is Lucy Kirkwood’s The Children\, a cautionary disaster drama built around three retired nuclear scientists. Married couple Hazel (Marie Mullen) and Robin (Seán McGinley) live in isolation until an old friend Rose (Ger Ryan) turns up to sow doubt and distrust. Exploring ageing and personal responsibility\, The Children\, which will be directed by Oonagh Murphy\, also meditates on the catastrophic results of human meddling in the natural world. A noteworthy footnote is Mullen and McGinley also are real-life partners who will appear on stage together for the first time in 27 years.  \nUntil March 23

SUMMARY:The Country Girls
DESCRIPTION:It wasn’t the easiest of starts to 2019 for the Abbey crew. To have been unable to address\, defuse\nor prevent the growing unease of 300 leading practitioners over employment opportunities\, or lack\nthereof\, was a tad embarrassing. There will be an air of relief then that at least the adaptation of\nEdna O’Brien’s seminal debut novel first published in 1960 is stacked with Irish talent such as\nGrace Collender\, Muiris Crowley and Lola Pettigrew. Co-director of the Abbey Graham McLaren\nassumes the mantle of director for this one. If you listen closely you might hear a naysayer mutter\nthe words ‘double-jobbing’ under their breath at the interval. \nThe Abbey Theatre\, Saturday February 23 to Saturday April 6\, €17-€40

SUMMARY:The Tide
DESCRIPTION:Whirligig Theatre and the New Theatre are delighted to present The Tide a new play by Tara Maria Lovett. The cast consists of Killian Filan and Ann Russell. It is directed by Pat Nolan and produced by Sine Lynch. Together they create a black comedy about the lengths this unlikely pair will go to\, to make their dreams a reality. The Tide is set in rural Ireland where seemingly ordinary people who never did anything “out of the way” decide that change must come. They use a Nissan Micra and the memory of a dead goldfish to hatch a plot to make their dreams come true. Once they start on the journey there is no turning back. Once they start they have to go where the tide takes them. \nThe New Theater 19th Feb – 2nd March 2019\, 7.30pm\, €14-€17

SUMMARY:Between the stones
DESCRIPTION:‘Noh’ is classical Japanese theatre which combines dance\, drama\, music\, poetic text\, exquisite costumes and masks into a highly aesthetic form of art that has been performed continuously for 650 years. This performance demonstration talk is designed to introduce audiences to the key elements of noh and to have a close up and interactive experience of how a new noh is developed from ‘page to stage’. The focus of the new noh\, Between the Stones\, is ‘from tragic loss to peace’. \nIt explores how the burden of grief turns into an understanding and celebration of life\, death\, beauty and love; and the transformative power of gardens to nurture and heal the soul… \nIt also uniquely brings together three Japanese cultural forms – noh\, karesansui gardens and furin (wind chimes). The professional noh actor\, Kinue Oshima\, the composer\, Richard Emmert\, and the author of this new two-act English language noh drama\, Jannette Cheong\, will share key aspects of how this new noh will be transformed from the poetic text to the stage production using traditional noh techniques. This is the third noh performing arts collaboration between Richard Emmert and Jannette Cheong and the second with the Oshima family following the acclaimed success of Pagoda (2009 European Tour\, 2011 Asia Tour). Come and join this unique team to have a deeper understanding of the 650 year-old theatre of noh\, and learn about the second  important phase of this rare\, new collaborative noh project. \ndlr Mill Theatre Dundrum Town Centre Friday 8th February 7.30pm \n

SUMMARY:Fortune
DESCRIPTION:You are out for dinner in a quiet Asian restaurant\, sat next to the only other people there. These people are discussing what to do with the family estate…VERY loudly. Everyone has a family member who isn’t afraid to air their dirty laundry. This family has three. A brother and two sisters meet to discuss how best to divide their deceased parent’s possessions\, what could possibly go wrong? \nSome might argue conversations like these are best done in a private space\, for the wellbeing of these squabbling siblings perhaps a public place is just the ticket. Jill McKeagney\, Tengu Theatre & Discotekken invite you to FORTUNE\, a unique dining and theatre experience\, located in a relaxed environment in one of Dublin’s favourite restaurants. \nAudience members will receive one of Yamamori’s renowned bento boxes and a house cocktail\, while they dine alongside the cast as this hilarious family drama unfolds. None of them will leave until they get what they deserve. \nWritten & directed by: Jill McKeagney \nProduced by: Emer Kenny \nCast: Robert Downes\, Alison Kinlan\, Hannah Osborne\, Larissa Santiago. \nWednesday 23rd January / 7-9pm Thursday 24th January / 7-9pm Friday 25th January / 6-8pm + admission to Discotekken afterparty Friday 25th January / 9-11pm (SOLD OUT) + admission to Discotekken afterparty \n

SUMMARY:Walk for Me
DESCRIPTION:This high octane coming of age story sees Kate Shanley Brennan (Miss Kate) flexing her impressive vocal chords and acting range. Walk for Me brings us on Mary Jane’s journey from ‘The Wes’ to the nightclubs of New York. With Handsome Paddy on stage mixing an ever-changing soundtrack and the bubblegum pop of arresting visuals by Johnny Brennan (Bobofunk)\, there’s an energy which propels this tale into the underground and back to surface so we can draw breath again. \nWith original compositions by Adam Fogarty (MathMan)\, Walk for Me hotwires our sluggish January circuit boards with lashings of sex\, drugs\, uppers and downers. Kate’s inventive use of her tracksuit top alone is worthy of extreme respect. On the flip side\, we overheard one critic simply say: “Dublin Old School has a lot to answer for”. \nSee Kate’s stellar fashion shoot ‘Persona’ in the current issue of TD here. \nRuns until January 26

SUMMARY:A Skull In Connemara
DESCRIPTION:A Martin McDonagh play is guaranteed to provide three things\, violence\, comedy and locals mixed up in strange circumstances. A Skull In Connemara does disappoint or fail to live up to the McDonagh formula. Recipient of several awards\, McDonagh is able to write characters that despite finding themselves in moral predicaments\, do not lose their humanness. Part of his celebrated Leenane Trilogy\, comprising of The Beauty Queen of Leenane and The Lonesome West\, A Skull In Connemara is a dark comedy about a local grave digger who’s community thinks killed his wife 7 years earlier. Pat Shortt delivers a convincing performance as protagonist Mick Dowd who finds himself at the mercy of nosey neighbours.

SUMMARY:Come on Home
DESCRIPTION:This new work by Philip McMahon (Town is Dead\, RIOT) is billed as an exploration of “faith\, family\, place and desire”. Michael hasn’t been home in almost twenty years. Having been kicked out of the seminary and exiled from his family home\, he found himself in London\, by accident rather than design. But now\, the death of his mother sees him back in the small town where he grew up. The place that chewed him up and spat him out. \nReunited with his two brothers\, their partners and the local clergy\, there are questions that want answering and old scores that need laying to rest. Where do you find home\, when your family and faith have abandoned you? An Irish funeral brings out the best and worst in people\, and a long night of truths lies ahead. Directed by Rachel O’Riordan\, Come on Home features a stalwart cast including Ian Lloyd Anderson\, Declan Conlon and Kathy Rose O’Brien. \nUntil August 4

SUMMARY:Copperface Jacks - The Musical
DESCRIPTION:We’d have our reservations and the fear of cringe if this musical were in the hands of anyone other than Paul Howard. However\, the creator of Ross O’Carroll-Kelly and Keano is an adept hand at wrinkling humour out of the various tribes in our city.  Billed as “Moulin Rouge…with slow sets” in the home of the hook-up\, it is a love story set on the eve of a Dublin and Kerry All-Ireland Final\, when a sweet Kerry girl\, who’s moved to the big smoke for her dream job in the VHI\, ends up falling head over her flat-shoes for a true blue Dublin team member. Tourists who thought they were going to Riverdance may be somewhat bamboozled. \nRuns until August 12
