SUMMARY:Theatre Highlight: SHIT
DESCRIPTION:Patricia Cornelius’ critically acclaimed play SHIT comes to the Project Arts Centre in a new production from THISISPOPBABY. Transplanting the story from Australia to Dublin\, the production tackles class\, misogyny and poverty. The play follows Billy\, Bob and Sam\, three ‘nasty women’ who ‘spit\, swear\, scream… They’re mean\, foul mouthed\, downtrodden\, and utterly damaged’. \n\nSHIT is a four-time Green Room Award winner\, a heart-breaking and bitterly funny piece that’s widely lauded as one of the best Australian plays in recent years. It’s a rare and unexpected treat to see it in Ireland as part of THISISPOPBABY’s new festival Where We Live 2020. \n\n

SUMMARY:Theatre Highlight: The Spider's House
DESCRIPTION:Roderick Ford was the recipient of Project Art’s 2019 Realize award\, a prize designed to support the production and presentation of ambitious new work by theatre and dance artists with disabilities. With the 40\,000 grant\, he’s created The Spider’s House\, a gothic tale set in a warped city space that reflects our own. \nBilled as a nightmare from a disordered mind\, the play follows a romance between Paulsa and Issy\, who are trying to escape the city limits. With this his new work\, Ford asks what relationships are permissible and who should be denied love. The play runs from the 27th of February to March 7th\, at 2:45pm and 7:45pm each day. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Theatre Highlight: Our New Girl
DESCRIPTION:Playwright Nancy Harris is no stranger to the stage of The Gate having adapted The Red Shoes in 2017 and making her Druid debut with The Beacon last October. First performed in London in 2012\, Our New Girl is knee-deep in dysfunctional family territory. \nAnnie\, an Irish nanny\, turns up unexpectedly in the affluent London home of Hazel who is coping with her pregnancy\, troubled son and Richard\, her plastic surgeon husband\, who is away on charitable work. Everything is simmering\, she’s the ingredient which brings it to the boil when Richard returns. It’s bears all the hallmarks of an excruciatingly taut psychological drama\, one both feared and beloved by the middle-classes.

SUMMARY:Mamafesta Memorialising
DESCRIPTION:My mum has senile dementia. I made my last piece about her. But it wasn’t enough. I still have more to do and more to say. I’m worried that what’s happening to her will happen to me. So\, this piece is a memory exercise for three male dancers. All pushing to see how much abstract information our bodies can retain. The title comes from a line from the Irish writer James Joyce’s epic novel Finnegan’s Wake. It references a letter (or manifesto) written by Annalivia Plurabelle. Annalivia represents the archetypal female character in this extremely complex masterpiece and\, though she may not be a classic heroine\, she is very definitely all essence. It is this essence or shifting between past present and future that reminds me of the fragility of our own identity. If we are more than the sum of our parts\, what’s left as some of those parts disappear? Who are we when it’s all gone? In this work it’s my own demons I’m dealing with. My need to tell my stories. To not forget or be forgotten. – Philip Connaughton \nRuns from Wednesday March 19 to Saturday March 22

SUMMARY:Medea
DESCRIPTION:Buoyed by the critical acclaim and sell-out run of A Christmas Carol\, The Gate stride into the new year with the first offering from their Power and Freedom season. Euripides Greek tragedy was first produced in 431BC so director Oonagh Murphy has a fair few reference points at her disposal. However\, this staging takes its lead from Kate Mulvany and Anne-Louise Sarks’ radical refresh of the source material in which they frame the tragedy from the perspective of the heroine’s children. Melding contemporary concerns upon mythological moorings whilst paying deference to the ‘out of the mouth of babes’ insights adds up to the prospect of a thrilling piece of theatre. \nUntil Saturday\, February 22 \nPhoto Credit: Simon Burch

SUMMARY:Theatre Highlight: A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings
DESCRIPTION:Adapted from Gabriel García Márquez’s short story which was subtitled ‘A Tale for Children’\, Collapsing Horse bring its magical realism back to the stage after an acclaimed debut at the Fringe Festival. It takes the tropes and accoutrements of the traditional world of fables and fairy-tales without ever resting upon the laurels of this domain. Narrated by Genevieve Hulme Beaman and her silent partner Manus Halligan\, A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings translates across all ages with seamless transitions between puppets and props and a charming design by Andrew Clancy who we featured in the magazine last month.\nPeacock Theatre\, Tuesday December 10 to Saturday December 28\, €16-€18\, 11.30am\, 2.30pm\, 4pm\, 7pm. SUMMARY:Theatre Highlight: Overfired
DESCRIPTION:Queer cabaret incorporating drag\, stand-up and song\, Overfired bills itself as ‘a show about queer Irish radicals.’ It won the Outburst Queer Fringe Award in 2018 and returns as a bauble of seasonal fabulousness. Stefan Fae and Lady K bring their song cycle featuring covers of contemporary classics from Sinéad O’Connor to Eiffel 65\, and culminates in an original song written under the mentorship of Peaches during the 2018 MAKE residency. Empowered rather than overpowered\, their credo this Christmas is: “joy is an act of resistance and resistance is fertile!” Check out the state-of-yer-nation in their company.\nProject Arts Centre until Saturday December 7\, 9.15pm\, €12-€16

DESCRIPTION:The Fregoli Heart project is a project dedicated to love. The team behind it opened their inboxes to submissions on that theme from the public\, and collected them all together to make a theatre piece about it. SUMMARY:Some People Theatre Company and Smock Alley Theatre Present Hollow and Dead-Eyed Beasts
DESCRIPTION:Three reclusive former child stars are forced to sell their lavish South Dublin home when they finally run out of money after years of living to excess. \nHaving gathered to mourn their manager’s death\, things begin to get weird. \nLong held secrets come unravelled\, a popular dance craze takes on new importance\, lifelong friendships are tested and a dead dog oversees it all. \nAre these overgrown children ready to leave behind their fantasy world for a life more ordinary? \nWritten and directed by Pea Dinneen\, Hollow and Dead-Eyed Beasts is a sort-of-kind-of-comedy; a bit about friendship\, not quite regarding fame\, almost concerning childhood with one hand vaguely in the area of death whilst also enjoying a passing reference to a popular 90s dance craze with the faintest nod to ritual and only slightly on the subject of the housing market (though having nowhere near enough of a perspective to qualify as satire). And this is all to say nothing of the really rather dead dog. \n \nBrought to you by Some People Theatre Company\, the team behind the sell-out 2018 Dublin Fringe Festival show White “Pick of the Fringe” – The Sunday Times\, “Simultaneously cutting and laugh out loud funny” – MEG.ie\, “At times exceptional\, vividly satirical” – The Reviews Hub \nRunning Time : 50 mins \n  \nBoys’ School\, Smock Alley Theatre \nSun 10 – Sat 16 Nov 2019\,  8pm | plus 3pm on Sat \n  \nWRITTEN & DIRECTED BY: Pea Dinneen (White\, Resident Hot Desker\, Dublin Fringe Festival) \nCAST: Kevin Cleary\, Niamh McGowan\, James O’Neill \nPRODUCED BY: Caoimhe McGowan \nLIGHTING DESIGNER : Riain Condon \nSTAGE MANAGER : Kate Canavan \nGRAPHIC DESIGNER : Kate Brady

DESCRIPTION:The opening of a new theatre space in the city is most welcome and most fitting in the year in which we tragically lost Karl Shields and his Theatre Upstairs space. \nThe Bohemian Theatre is a new cabaret style theatre and performance space by The Corps Ensemble in the heart of buzz neighbourhood du jour\, Phibsborough. \nIt launches its inaugural season with the European premiere of Kissing the Witch\, Emma Donoghue’s (Room) re-imagined fairytales inspired by traditional European sources (Brothers Grimm\, Perrault\, Hans Anderson). \nThe Bohemian Theatre\, 66 Phibsborough Rd\, until Saturday November 9 at 8.30pm\, €12

SUMMARY:Dublin Theatre Festival 2019
DESCRIPTION:The second phase of the festival rolls out after a series of heavy-hitting world premieres such as Mám and Beckett’s Room and yet another Anu show (Faultline) which everyone is scrambling to find a ticket to. Highlights we have penciled in for this phase include The Bluffer’s Guide to Suburbia (Project Arts Centre)\, Raymond Scannell’s writing debut for the festival which explores the busted flush of an indie musician\, returning home to live with his parents against the backdrop of contemporary concerns. \nPasolini’s Salò Redubbed (Peacock) is Dylan Tighe’s hugely ambitious take on a film condemned as nauseating\, shocking\, depraved\, pornographic upon its release but also a masterpiece in hindsight. Burgerz (Smock Alley) which explores how performance artist Travis Alabanza became obsessed with burgers after someone threw said food item at them and shouted a transphobic slur. \nWe’re also intrigued by Collection of Lovers which concerns the documentation of encounters with 200 lovers across 20 cities by Portuguese artist Raquel André and Us/Them (Pavillion) which explores a hostage situation from the vantage point of children. \nSep 26 to October 13 \ndublintheatrefestival.ie

SUMMARY:How To Win Against History - The World’s Wealthiest Man is En Route to Tallaght
DESCRIPTION:Henry Paget was one of the world’s wealthiest men until he lost it all by being too damn fabulous. At the end of the 19th Century\, the British peer blew his family’s fortune on diamond-studded frocks\, ruby-encrusted slippers and flamboyant transvestite performances. He died at age 29\, in Monte Carlo where he was selling jewels on the streets to keep himself alive. \n \nNow the world’s wealthiest man is back and en route to Tallaght. The hit musical ‘How to Win Against History’ is set to be one of the highlights of this year’s Dublin Theatre Festival and will run from September 25-27th in The Civic Theatre. The musical is written by and starring Seiriol Davies who was nominated for Best Performance in a Musical at last year’s UK Theatre Awards. \nDescribed as a “work of genius” the hilarious new musical is a story about being too weird for the world but desperately not wanting it to forget you. A frothy\, glossy costume drama musical about expectations\, manliness\, disappointment and the stories we tell to convince ourselves it’s all going well\, and the moments we realise it’s not. \n‘How To Win Against History’ will run in The Civic\, Tallaght from September 25-27th as part of the Dublin Theatre Festival. SUMMARY:Mám
DESCRIPTION:As ‘world premiere’ expectations go\, anticipation will be set at 10 for Mám\, the latest show by Michael Keegan Dolan who brought the sublime Swan Lake/Loch na hEala into our lives in 2016. He’s bringing the virtuoso\, Irish traditional concertina player Cormac Begley\, who wowed us with his Sunday morning performance at Another Love Story last month\, together with the European classical\, contemporary collective\, s t a r g a z e and twelve international dancers from the Teaċ Daṁsa company. Little is known about the production except that it “acknowledges how life’s polarities can on occasion come together and find resolution.” It forms part of this year’s Dublin Theatre Festival which runs until October 13 \nMám is on until Saturday October 5

SUMMARY:WE ARE LIGHTNING! At Dublin Fringe Festival
DESCRIPTION:WE ARE LIGHTNING! is a massive theatre-stadium gig\, which features over 100 local Dublin musicians. It’s set in the near future\, when all the music venues have closed down\, except for one. The show is the final gig in the last venue in town. It’s about celebrating local places we can gather to play and hear music\, and how music shapes our lives.\n\n\nIn Dublin’s current climate\, it really hits to the heart of what people are feeling about venues closing too.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWE ARE LIGHTNING! by Joe O’Farrell & Sam Halmarack  \n\n19 – 21 Sept | National Stadium – Ringside Bar \n\n\nTickets: bit.ly/WALatDFF

SUMMARY:The Hunger
DESCRIPTION:A new opera by Donnacha Dennehy (The Last Hotel\, The Second Violinist) featuring Katherine Manley and Iarla Ó Lionáird (The Gloaming) chronicles the tale of Asenath Nicholson who travelled in Ireland and provided relief to starving people during the Great Famine. Her harrowing first-person account Annals of the Famine in Ireland forms the basis of this work with director Tom Creed making his Abbey debut. Traditional songs dovetail with new music\, while video interviews with Noam Chomsky\, Paul Krugman\, and others underscore the political roots of this tragedy that brought a nation to its knees. \nUntil Saturday August 24

SUMMARY:Ask Too Much of Me
DESCRIPTION:Ask Too Much of Me follows young people living together outside the law in the turbulent first half of 2018. They have a lot of questions and few answers\, meaning they live by faith even if they don’t live by god. The National Youth Theatre features  a talented young ensemble cast of sixteen from all over Ireland with cast members from Cork\, Dublin\, Kilkenny\, Limerick\, Longford\, Mayo\, Monaghan\, Wexford and Wicklow. \nArtistic Director Veronica Coburn and playwright Dylan Coburn Gray\, a former National Youth Theatre participant\, have  created a new play around the idea of faith with NYT. \n“When I was in The Seagull\, the National Youth Theatre show 2009\, I felt incredibly lucky. All the same\, now\, I think I didn’t know how lucky I was. Being a member of Dublin Youth Theatre\, auditioning for this big scary Chekhov with a big scary director – in the big scary Abbey\, no less! – starting to write plays myself; it laid the track for my entire adult life. Veronica\, my mother\, was in the 1984 NYT show: Our Town\, the second ever. I think she feels similar. It’s gorgeous to be working together\, mother and son\, writer and director\, with a gorgeous group of young people. It’s a real honour to get to see it all happen again\, through their eyes as well as our own.” – Writer Dylan Coburn Gray \nUntil Saturday August 24

SUMMARY:Brendan Galileo for Europe
DESCRIPTION:We caught this ‘Show in a Bag’ during the Fringe last year and creased ourselves with laughter for the duration of it. We said it was “suffused with wit\, warmth\, hilarity and a truly exceptional performance by Fionn Foley” and predicted great things for it. \nIt went on to win Best Actor and Little Gem at the Fringe awards and makes a welcome return before entering the frey of the Edinburgh Fringe. Brendan Galileo for Europe explores an island’s relationship with a continent\, a community and a contest. \nAs a last ditch effort to save a local music school\, Brendan Galileo is bound for the European Parliament via the Song Contest. SUMMARY:Beginning
DESCRIPTION:After the rather brilliant production of Lucy Kirkwood’s The Children last month\, comes the second instalment of The Gate’s Love and Courage season. David Eldridge’s Beginning is a two-hander exploring the challenges of finding love or\, “sozzled loners seek a connection in a tech age\,” as the Guardian header described it. Starring Marty Rea (Danny) and Eileen Walsh (Laura)\, who is well versed for this role following recent performances in the stellar Catastrophe\, these are the last two souls at a house-warming party. Their performances and interplay are excruciatingly entertaining. \n“I wish I’d met you online. Everything would be so much easier\,” says Danny\, at one stage\, summarising the tragic disconnect of our times facilitated by social media. The perspective of the lost and wounded\, fragile\, man is particularly interesting and carried off with aplomb by Rea. After a killer poster for The Children\, it’s a slight shame this one fails to convey how funny and poignant this production truly is. A double whammy of refreshingly contemporary productions for The Gate. Take a bow! \nUntil Saturday April 20

SUMMARY:Ireland's Call
DESCRIPTION:“Ireland\, Ireland – Together standing tall – Shoulder to shoulder – We’ll answer Ireland’s call.” So goes the chorus to the unofficial national anthem\, whose lyrical claim to national identity is scrutinized in a climactic scene midway through this honest\, hard-hitting play. \nA one-man play written and performed by John Connors\, of RTÉ’s Love/Hate and the film Cardboard Gangsters\, Ireland’s Call explores the bygone misadventures of three northside working-class Dublin friends through the words of James (Connors).  \nTold in the traditional style of seanchaí Irish storytelling\, where crowds would gather round and hang on the storyteller’s every word\, Connors is similarly able to engage the audience and take them on a journey to the point of peak suspension of disbelief. \nSeated in a lone spot lit chair in the centre of the stage\, the Coolock native begins by introducing himself. He dips in and out of memories as he recalls childhood shenanigans with friends that gradually turn to exploits of drug and alcohol fueled good times. But what goes up must come down\, and for James the comedown is fast and hard\, and the people he loves most tumble down along with him.  \nAn auditory adventure that is equally hilarious\, uncomfortable and heartbreaking.  \nDirector Jimmy Smallhorne does a brilliant job of keeping the physical action to a minimum so that each spoken word powerfully expresses the realities of those living life on the margins. Rose Ugoalah \nTwo performances in the Axis 11.30am & 8pm \nAlso in the Viking Theatre\, Clontarf from Monday March 25 to Saturday March 30 \n

SUMMARY:The Children
DESCRIPTION:Now that everyone in the country has seen The Great Gatsby\, it’s time for The Gate to make way for some fresh productions. Launching their Love and Courage season is Lucy Kirkwood’s The Children\, a cautionary disaster drama built around three retired nuclear scientists. Married couple Hazel (Marie Mullen) and Robin (Seán McGinley) live in isolation until an old friend Rose (Ger Ryan) turns up to sow doubt and distrust. Exploring ageing and personal responsibility\, The Children\, which will be directed by Oonagh Murphy\, also meditates on the catastrophic results of human meddling in the natural world. A noteworthy footnote is Mullen and McGinley also are real-life partners who will appear on stage together for the first time in 27 years.  \nUntil March 23

To have been unable to address\, defuse\nor prevent the growing unease of 300 leading practitioners over employment opportunities\, or lack\nthereof\, was a tad embarrassing. SUMMARY:The Tide
DESCRIPTION:Whirligig Theatre and the New Theatre are delighted to present The Tide a new play by Tara Maria Lovett. The cast consists of Killian Filan and Ann Russell. It is directed by Pat Nolan and produced by Sine Lynch. Together they create a black comedy about the lengths this unlikely pair will go to\, to make their dreams a reality. The Tide is set in rural Ireland where seemingly ordinary people who never did anything “out of the way” decide that change must come. They use a Nissan Micra and the memory of a dead goldfish to hatch a plot to make their dreams come true. Once they start on the journey there is no turning back. Once they start they have to go where the tide takes them. \nThe New Theater 19th Feb – 2nd March 2019\, 7.30pm\, €14-€17
