SUMMARY:Every Brilliant Thing
DESCRIPTION:A welcome return for this bittersweet journey through the world of depression. Originating as a short story by Duncan Macmillan who then teamed up with Jonny Donahoe to realise a stage adaptation which in turn lead to a HBO documentary with Tobey Maguire\, this staging brings back Andrea Ainsworth (director) and Amy Conroy (narrator) to tell the story of an unnamed seven-year-old girl who makes a list of “every brilliant thing” that makes life worth living in the hope that she can make her mother feel better. The writing has been called “heartfelt and buoyant” and the production as “magically uplifting”. Audience members play an improvisational part too.   \nPeacock until Saturday July 1

SUMMARY:Sisters
DESCRIPTION:Sisters is the title of a groundbreaking new Irish musical that celebrates the pioneering women of the past\, while paying homage to those who lit the fire of change in Ireland. \nSet in 1971 against the backdrop of Catholic Ireland and the rise of the Irish Women’s Liberation Movement\, the show revolves around the story of a young single mother\, Bernadette Boland\, ostracised by her community\, as she embarks on her journey toward self-empowerment. \nLike many single mothers at the time\, Bernadette is shunned by her family and is invisible in society. Obtaining necessities like housing and employment proves extremely challenging. Meanwhile her sister Kathleen struggles with her new married life even as the youngest\, Noleen\, embraces the budding sexual revolution. \nBernadette’s life is changed when she gets a waitressing job at Gaj’s restaurant on Baggot Street. Margaret Gaj\, who owned Gaj’s on Baggot Street\, was one of the founders of the Irish Women’s Liberation Movement (IWLM)\, and her restaurant was a place frequented by the revolutionaries\, eccentrics and outsiders who clashed\, argued and rose up to envision a liberated and free Ireland. \nUnsurprisingly\, Bernadette’s encounters with the radical customers at Gaj’s bring upheaval and change to not only her own life\, but to her family and consequently the country. \nDescribed as “both entertaining and deeply moving”\, Sisters celebrates the pioneering women of the past while paying homage to those who lit the fire of change in Ireland. \n \nWritten and directed by Tracy Ryan with musical direction by Kaeylea B. VanKeith\, Sisters opens at the dlr Mill Theatre Dundrum at 7.30pm on Saturday\, September 24th\, and will run from October 4th-8th at 7.30pm each night with a matinée performance on 8th October at 2.30pm. SUMMARY:An Octoroon
DESCRIPTION:Irish playwright\, Dion Boucicault’s wrote The Octoroon in 1859. Adapting Thomas Mayne Reid‘s 1856 novel about the residents of a Louisiana plantation\, it sparked debates about the abolition of slavery and the role of theatre in politics. In 2014\, playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins gave it a subversive contemporary reboot\, fashioning what the New York Times called “the most eloquent statement on race in America today.” This whipsmart production of An Octoroon is laced with humour and razor-sharp commentary on race and society\, ably anchored by some stellar cast performances. It is the sort 0f boat pushing programming we’ve been hankering for from our national theatre for some time. \nuntil May 14 with 2pm matinees on Saturday

SUMMARY:Abomination: A DUP Opera
DESCRIPTION:Conor Mitchell’s crafts a sublime retort to the DUP’s shameful homophobia by turning the words back on them. \nRevolutionary in form\, Abomination centres on the scandalous live radio interview given by NI Politician Iris Robinson\, when she referred to homosexuality as an ‘abomination’ – an act that has gone down in Irish queer history and instantly re-ignited the Northern Irish equality debate. \nWith their unique high-impact\, multi-disciplinary style\, the Belfast Ensemble wrap this story in a fresh web of incendiary historical comments by DUP members on the subject of gay rights\, marriage equality\, ‘poofs’ and ‘perverts’ to shockingly theatrical effect – challenging the power of words in the hands of the powerful. \nContemporary\, political\, comic\, and emotionally complex\, this riotous Northern Irish original redefined what a 21st-century opera could say\, and why… and with just a touch of drag! \nEnds Saturday April 2 with matinee at 2pm that day also.

SUMMARY:SHIT
DESCRIPTION:Kicking off THISISPOPBABY’s unmissable 15-Year Anniversary programme this March is the electrifying\, multi-award winning play SHIT by acclaimed playwright Patricia Cornelius\, for five performances only at Project Arts Centre. \nPicking up where they left off\, after having their planned opening night interrupted by a global pandemic lockdown in 2020\, the company restages SHIT for a full run this March. The play is a provocative and heart-breaking\, tragic and bitterly funny rollercoaster starring the outstanding Kate Stanley Brennan (Conversations After Sex)\, Aisling O’Mara (Redemption of a Rogue/Netflix) and Nicky Lewis (RIOT)\, and directed by THISISPOPBABY co-director Jennifer Jennings. \n \nCritically acclaimed as one of the best plays on Australian stages in recent years\, SHIT is about terrifying\, awful\, hilarious women. Angry\, nasty and out of control\, they’re everything women shouldn’t be\, and we hate them. Grown-up little girls who spit\, swear\, scream\, threaten\, piss in the street\, flash their tits and laugh too loudly. Who fight\, like\, really fight. Who fuck too much\, or not at all\, wear too much make up\, or none at all… and don’t believe in anything. They believe the world is shit\, that their lives are shit\, that they are shit. \nThis is a story about three of those women. Their names are Billy\, Bob and Sam. \nExactly 15 years since THISISPOPBABY came out of traps with Danny & Chantelle (Still Here)\, this new Irish production of SHIT is a compelling\, raw\, powerful and timely treatise on misogyny\, class and poverty. \n \nphotos: Simon Lazewski

DESCRIPTION:The first performance of Fidelio\, Beethoven’s only opera\, took place in the Theatre Royal in December 1838. It also marks the first live production by Irish National Opera since May 2019. The giddy thrill of being in public\, having an occasion to go to and witnessing the the edge and energy of performers\, set changes and orchestras being conducted in the pit is a welcome sight. Written in the first decade of the 19th century\, Beethoven was influenced by a story from the French Revolution concerning a woman who dressed as a man to rescue her husband from imprisonment. “Today freedom is as important and relevant a concept as it was then\,” writes director Annabelle Comyn. “In recent years with the rise of the right\, populism\, and authoritarianism\, Beethoven’s opera has never felt so urgent.” \nSet in a state prison\, the opening scene sees Rocco (Daniel Sumegi\, bass-baritone)\, the prison warden\, preparing for his day in a Francis O’Connor’s set which evokes communist Germany in its spartan\, minimalism – a look which has found favour in chic design aesthetics these days\, also. He has a daughter\, Marzelline (Kelli Ann-Masterson\, soprano)\, and an assistant\, Jaquino (Dean Power\, tenor)\, who is in love with Marzelline. “He acts from a state of fear: at times with compassion\, at times lured by promises of personal gain\,” says Comyn. Leonore (Sinéad Campbell Wallace\, soprano)\, our heroine\, is the wife of the imprisoned Florestan (Robert Murray\, tenor) but disguised as Fidelio in order to breach the system and be with her love. Yet\, they have to overcome the baddie Don Pizarro (Brian Mulligan\, baritone)\, who is chief governor of the joint. If that sounds in any way confusing\, trust us it’s not and with the aid of surtitles you will slip into the action and emotion with ease. \n \nThere’s unrequited love\, marriage proposals\, prisoners seeing tantalising daylight and murderous intentions – it’s opera baby! And it’s fun even when we get to see opera singers wobbling on the acting tightrope\, on occasion. There’s strong central performances with Florestan\, in particular\, delivering a powerfully convincing performance of the doomed inmate. Fergus Shiel waves the wand and notes that\, “for Beethoven a lot of it (the music) is about rhythms and motifs and small snatches of things that are repeated and repeated and it’s like architecture\, the way he uses these blocks of music.” \nGet back in the room\, it’s been too long\, and enjoy a night at the opera. \nPerformances Wednesday\, Friday and Saturday November 10\,12 and 13 at 7.30pm.

SUMMARY:Dublin Theatre Festival
DESCRIPTION:Festival   \nDublin Theatre Festival  \nConceived during lockdown\, realised during this limbo phase and ending just shy of the full reopening\, there’s little doubt that the whiteboard at DTF called for a few wipe downs and re-imaginings over the last while. That said\, the show will go on\, with live stream and on demand options. Actual real life options for seeing shows seem extremely limited at the time of writing with most sold out\, though do check the box office. \nExpected highlights include Philip McMahon’s Once Before I Go (Gate)\, Mark O’Halloran’s Conversations After Sex (Project Arts) and Gina Moxley’s The Application (New Theatre). Meanwhile\, performance maker and artist Tim Etchells is making a new neon work to be installed at the Crown Alley Telephone Exchange which will hopefully shed some bright light on the city as it emerges from darkness into darkness.  \nVarious venues\, September 30 to October 17  \ndublintheatrefestival.ie

SUMMARY:Embargo
DESCRIPTION:Embargo a new play by renowned writer Deirdre Kinahan (Rathmines Road\, Unmanageable Sisters\, Spinning\, Halcyon Days\, Moment)\, is a story of three souls caught up in the violent winds of change… It recalls May 1920\, during the War of Independence\, when dockers and railwaymen refused to transport any armed troops\, or to handle any weapons arriving from Britain.  \nOn the centenary of this act of civil resistance\, Fishamble will stage a site-responsive production\, in association with Iarnród Éireann and Dublin Port Company as part of Dublin Theatre Festival. \nEmbargo is a muddy\, complicated\, poetic\, bloody\, and heroic tale of a politically motivated industrial action\, in which three characters deal with a pivotal moment during the Irish war of independence. These are our ghosts\, their story is our story. \nTickets for the live-streamed performance are available from www.fishambleembargo.eventbrite.com \nThe recording of the live performance will then be available to watch for a limited time on the Fishamble website at www.fishamble.com/embargo and YouTube. \n

SUMMARY:Theatre Highlight: SHIT
DESCRIPTION:Patricia Cornelius’ critically acclaimed play SHIT comes to the Project Arts Centre in a new production from THISISPOPBABY. Transplanting the story from Australia to Dublin\, the production tackles class\, misogyny and poverty. The play follows Billy\, Bob and Sam\, three ‘nasty women’ who ‘spit\, swear\, scream… They’re mean\, foul mouthed\, downtrodden\, and utterly damaged’. \n\nSHIT is a four-time Green Room Award winner\, a heart-breaking and bitterly funny piece that’s widely lauded as one of the best Australian plays in recent years. It’s a rare and unexpected treat to see it in Ireland as part of THISISPOPBABY’s new festival Where We Live 2020. \n\n

SUMMARY:Theatre Highlight: Our New Girl
DESCRIPTION:Playwright Nancy Harris is no stranger to the stage of The Gate having adapted The Red Shoes in 2017 and making her Druid debut with The Beacon last October. First performed in London in 2012\, Our New Girl is knee-deep in dysfunctional family territory. \nAnnie\, an Irish nanny\, turns up unexpectedly in the affluent London home of Hazel who is coping with her pregnancy\, troubled son and Richard\, her plastic surgeon husband\, who is away on charitable work. Everything is simmering\, she’s the ingredient which brings it to the boil when Richard returns. It’s bears all the hallmarks of an excruciatingly taut psychological drama\, one both feared and beloved by the middle-classes.

SUMMARY:Mamafesta Memorialising
DESCRIPTION:My mum has senile dementia. I made my last piece about her. But it wasn’t enough. I still have more to do and more to say. I’m worried that what’s happening to her will happen to me. So\, this piece is a memory exercise for three male dancers. All pushing to see how much abstract information our bodies can retain. The title comes from a line from the Irish writer James Joyce’s epic novel Finnegan’s Wake. It references a letter (or manifesto) written by Annalivia Plurabelle. Annalivia represents the archetypal female character in this extremely complex masterpiece and\, though she may not be a classic heroine\, she is very definitely all essence. It is this essence or shifting between past present and future that reminds me of the fragility of our own identity. If we are more than the sum of our parts\, what’s left as some of those parts disappear? Who are we when it’s all gone? In this work it’s my own demons I’m dealing with. My need to tell my stories. To not forget or be forgotten. – Philip Connaughton \nRuns from Wednesday March 19 to Saturday March 22

SUMMARY:Medea
DESCRIPTION:Buoyed by the critical acclaim and sell-out run of A Christmas Carol\, The Gate stride into the new year with the first offering from their Power and Freedom season. Euripides Greek tragedy was first produced in 431BC so director Oonagh Murphy has a fair few reference points at her disposal. However\, this staging takes its lead from Kate Mulvany and Anne-Louise Sarks’ radical refresh of the source material in which they frame the tragedy from the perspective of the heroine’s children. Melding contemporary concerns upon mythological moorings whilst paying deference to the ‘out of the mouth of babes’ insights adds up to the prospect of a thrilling piece of theatre. \nUntil Saturday\, February 22 \nPhoto Credit: Simon Burch

DESCRIPTION:Three reclusive former child stars are forced to sell their lavish South Dublin home when they finally run out of money after years of living to excess. \nHaving gathered to mourn their manager’s death\, things begin to get weird. \nLong held secrets come unravelled\, a popular dance craze takes on new importance\, lifelong friendships are tested and a dead dog oversees it all. \nAre these overgrown children ready to leave behind their fantasy world for a life more ordinary? \nWritten and directed by Pea Dinneen\, Hollow and Dead-Eyed Beasts is a sort-of-kind-of-comedy; a bit about friendship\, not quite regarding fame\, almost concerning childhood with one hand vaguely in the area of death whilst also enjoying a passing reference to a popular 90s dance craze with the faintest nod to ritual and only slightly on the subject of the housing market (though having nowhere near enough of a perspective to qualify as satire). And this is all to say nothing of the really rather dead dog. \n \nBrought to you by Some People Theatre Company\, the team behind the sell-out 2018 Dublin Fringe Festival show White “Pick of the Fringe” – The Sunday Times\, “Simultaneously cutting and laugh out loud funny” – MEG.ie\, “At times exceptional\, vividly satirical” – The Reviews Hub \nRunning Time : 50 mins \n  \nBoys’ School\, Smock Alley Theatre \nSun 10 – Sat 16 Nov 2019\,  8pm | plus 3pm on Sat \n  \nWRITTEN & DIRECTED BY: Pea Dinneen (White\, Resident Hot Desker\, Dublin Fringe Festival) \nCAST: Kevin Cleary\, Niamh McGowan\, James O’Neill \nPRODUCED BY: Caoimhe McGowan \nLIGHTING DESIGNER : Riain Condon \nSTAGE MANAGER : Kate Canavan \nGRAPHIC DESIGNER : Kate Brady
