SUMMARY:Emma
DESCRIPTION:Kate Hamill’s re-telling of the iconic Jane Austen novel Emma plays at the Abbey Theatre this winter. Directed by Claire O’Reilly\, with Toni O’Rourke as the titular Emma\, the production seeks to “rip the bodice of tradition” with a theatrical experience playfully retelling the classic story. O’Reilly also says that “We’re taking a fictional town in a British regency novel\, through an American screwball lens and then setting in the Irish National Theatre with Irish actors\, so it’s amazing”. \nSounds all very Brat like and a heap of fun. Tickets begin pricing at €15\, and the production will continue until 25 January\, 2025. \nEmma Director\, Designer + cast c. SUMMARY:The Holding Bones
DESCRIPTION:In an artist’s studio\, shadows talk\, objects come alive and she draws her very bones to overcome loss and celebrate love and the cycle of life. The Holding Bones lovingly recalls a host of characters – songsters\, storytellers and mischief makers.\n\n\n\nA new original piece from Púca for adults The Holding Bones is a fitting celebration of Samhain\, All Soul’s and The Day of the Dead. At this time of year\, they say\, the veil between our world and the next is at its thinnest. Once we would have set an extra place at the table\, left the door unlocked and lit a candle for each of our loved lost kin at Halloween and remembered our dearly departed throughout the month of November.\n\nSince 1997\, award winning Púca Puppets have been producing shows for adults and children from Ballymun to Bangkok\, in theatres\, canals and other ordinary and extraordinary places. In this new show\, Lawlor\, veteran performer from Púca for nearly 30 years\, counts her ancestors on her very bones and brings them back to life on stage. Set in her studio she draws upon her skills as a puppet maker and visual artist to enrich the tale she has to tell\, as funny as it is deeply moving. In paying playful homage to her ancestors Niamh Lawlor contemplates the purpose of life. Her life.\n\nVital theatrical storytelling invites you to meditate on family\, memory and rituals of grieving and how to embrace the bittersweet turns of the cycle of life.\n\nThis will be among the opening performances of a very personal yet universal show that has been crafted over several years\, assisted by support from The Arts Council\, dlr County Council\, South Dublin Live a South Dublin County Council Arts Office initiative\, Pavilion Studio and the Mermaid Arts Centre\, Draíocht and Civic Theatres. A work in progress was well received by test audiences who said:\n\n“Outstanding show\, brought back so many memories\, very emotional\, laughed and cried\, great”. \n“What a beautiful piece…it came from the heart and touched my heart… it hit all the senses”\n“Compelling…dancing with life and death and the shadows… Massive round of applause”\n“Poetry and Heart and Soul Food”\n\nWriter / Performer Niamh Lawlor\nDirector Emma Finegan\nProduction Manager\, Stage Management and Operation Aimee Crilly\nLighting Design Colin Doran\nProducer Púca Puppets\nCreated in collaboration with Dramaturg / Director Veronica Coburn; Artist Lian Bell; Sound / Music Composition Sinead Diskin\n\n\nThe Holding Bones Schedule 2024\nRehearsals Supported by Mermaid Arts Centre\, Fringe Lab and The Civic Theatre\n\n\nCivic Theatre Studio\, Tallaght\n30th Oct – 1st Nov 7.30 pm\n2nd Nov 1pm\nBooking: 01 462 7477 civictheatre.ie/\n\nMermaid Arts Centre\, Bray\n12th Nov 8pm\nBooking: 01 272 4030 mermaidartscentre.ie\n\nRiverbank Arts Centre\, Newbridge\n14th Nov 8pm\nBooking: 045 448 327 riverbank\n\nLexicon Studio (next to Cafe) Dún Laoghaire\n15th Nov 3.30 pm and 17th November 2.30 pm with after show discussion.\nBooking: eventbrite.ie The Holding Bones

SUMMARY:Aileen
DESCRIPTION:Recently formed theatre troupe Venom and Ducttape present their debut production AILEEN\, a comedy horror parody\, inspired by the movie ALIEN (1979) at Smock Alley Theatre this August. Meet the two faces of Aileen Ripley: The strong confident warrant officer and the vulnerable survivor under duress. Hear her internal monologue as the events unfold on the Nostromo. Bouncing between her fellow crew members\, we witness a contentious work environment\, revealing grand betrayals and unexpected liaisons. The action will shift from feats of great heroics to the controlled and fraught deposition process. Watch as she tries to save her career\, her sanity and a cat. \n \nThis is an intimate and magical evening filled with screaming\, running\, horror\, mutilation\, death and more running. Watch as Aileen\, armed with nothing but a flame thrower\, battles with herself\, the crew and a 7 foot Xenomorph!’ We can’t wait! \n\n\nWritten and performed by Emma Moohan \nDirected by Gertrude Montgomery \nImage Credit: Emily O’Connor & Stephanie Connolly \nSmock Alley 12 – 17 August

SUMMARY:Children of the Sun
DESCRIPTION:Written by Hilary Fannin\, after Gorky and directed by Lynne Parker\, this Rough Magic and Abbey Theatre co-production comes to the Abbey stage in just three weeks. The story of how “a small family\, their collection of friends and one eccentric stranger distract\, entertain and enrage each other in a moment of crisis.” \nPlaywright Hilary Fannin says: “What value is prediction when the writing is splashed on the wall? Children of the Sun\, after Maxim Gorky’s 1905 text\, is a mordantly comic exploration of one household’s attempts to shelter from the merciless approach of imminent devastation under a tattered blanket of art\, beauty and dog-eared love.” \n \nAbbey Theatre\, 13th April – 11th May \nOn the Abbey stage from 13th April to 11th May\, tickets are on sale now

SUMMARY:Double Bill: The Bad Daters & The Good Cheaters
DESCRIPTION:The Bad Daters & The Good Cheaters are written and directed by New York-based Derek Murphy\, originally from Ballyfermot. Both shows feature comedian Brian Gallagher\, resident MC of Dublin’s Laughter Lounge\, and actress Sarah Maria Lafferty. The Bad Daters recently had its world premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival\, where it received five-star critical acclaim and a sold-out run.  \nLafferty\, a Dublin-based actor and producer\, began her work on both shows when introduced to Derek Murphy in 2016 during a theatre workshop in New York. \n“Both shows\, The Bad Daters and The Good Cheaters\, are captivating dark Irish comedies that deeply resonate with audiences\,” explains Lafferty. “In The Bad Daters\, we are introduced to Liam and Wendy\, who have met online. The dark comedy delves into the complexities of human connection and the daunting experience of seeking love for individuals scarred by past relationships. On the contrary\, The Good Cheaters follows the journey of Paddy and Phyllis as they navigate the treacherous waters of adultery within their own relationship. They are a perfect blend of hilarity and tragedy\, courtesy of the talented writer\, Derek Murphy”. \nLafferty’s co-star Brian Gallagher is well known as the resident MC at Dublin’s Laughter Lounge and a rising star in the Irish comedy circuit\, previously opening for Tommy Tiernan at Vicar Street. \n“Irish audiences are in for a treat”\, explained Gallagher. “We were absolutely amazed by the overwhelming response to The Bad Daters at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival\, receiving outstanding 4 and 5-star reviews from all corners. Now\, at The Viking\, we are thrilled to present an even more epic night of dark comedy-drama with the inclusion of The Good Cheaters. While modern technology may facilitate faster connections\, it cannot replace the authenticity and personal touch that define genuine relationships.” \nThe Bad Daters & The Good Cheaters run at The Viking Theatre\, The Sheds\, 198 Clontarf Road from 8th-20th April. Tickets are priced from €20. \nvikingtheatredublin.com

SUMMARY:The Quare Fellow
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate a century since Brendan Behan’s birth\, the Abbey Theatre presents this modern take on The Quare Fellow\, directed by Tom Creed. Having premiered at the Pike Theatre in 1954 under the direction of Alan Simpson\, this modern classic was first produced at the Abbey in 1956 (Ernest Blythe turned it down originally) and has not been staged there since 1984. It unfolds over the timeframe between the arrival in a prison (based on Mountjoy Jail) of an unnamed man who we never see\, condemned to death for the murder of his brother\, and his execution\, with which the play ends. The top notch cast of 15\, all female and non-binary actors\, will perform all of the male characters\, continuing Behan’s legacy of subversion\, surprise and confrontation.

SUMMARY:The Perfect Immigrant: Groundbreaking new play Shines A light on challenges faced by young migrants
DESCRIPTION:From the struggles of job hunting and navigating Ireland’s dating scene to searching for red chilli peppers in Lucan\, this timely one-man show is a heartfelt and hilarious exploration of the challenges faced by those in search of a brighter future. \nThePerfect Immigrant revolves around Levi\, a courageous young Nigerian man who leaves his homeland\, with three worn suitcases\, to fulfill his dream of studying engineering in a foreign land. Samuel Yakura describes how parts of the show are autobiographical: “The story is about a young adult navigating manhood\, loneliness\, and self-discovery in a foreign place. The piece draws\, in part\, from my own experiences as a migrant. Similar to the show’s protagonist\, I came to Ireland in 2018 to pursue a masters in civil engineering. The piece is quite different from a traditional theatre show. We tell Levi’s story through a powerful mix of poetry\, prose\, and with an Irish-Nigerian sense of humour that will entertain and resonate with audiences of all backgrounds”. \nFor native Irish audiences\, The Perfect Immigrant provides a unique insight into the cultural challenges of migration. Yakura believes that stories like these will also encourage more minority cultures to engage with Ireland’s theatre and arts scene. \n“Ireland is undergoing a transformative journey towards becoming a thriving\, multicultural society. However\, there is a noticeable lack of representation in the arts and in audience attendance. By sharing stories like The Perfect Immigrant on stage\, we hope to encourage minority cultures to explore the vibrant world of theatre and arts in Ireland. Personally\, my journey as a poet has been enriched by coming here. I would encourage the general theatre community but also those outsiders to come and experience this inspiring show”. \nFollowing an award-winning premiere at last year’s Dublin Fringe Festival\, “The Perfect Immigrant” written and performed by poet and playwright Samuel Yakura and directed by Katie O’Halloran will tour theatre venues across Ireland this November. As part of this  nation-wide tour\, the play will be at The Civic Theatre\, Tallaght 9th-11th November and Mermaid Arts Centre\, Bray on 25th November. \nFeature Image: Nigerian poet and playwright Samuel Yakura photographed at Dublin’s Liberty Lane as he performs a scene from his new show “The Perfect Immigrant”. SUMMARY:Somewhere Out There You
DESCRIPTION:Nancy Harris’s new play fizzes and pops. It’s a comedy with heart and insight\, a story about love lost and love sought set against a backdrop of the city lit with nostalgic neon thrills such as the Happy Ring House and Why Go Bald? signs. Wayne Jordan directs an ensemble of talented actors primed to deliver their best and then some. SUMMARY:Persona Metropolitana
DESCRIPTION:A new piece by Annachiara Vispi & Giulia Macrì\, premiering at Dublin Fringe Festival this September. \nThis is Giulia. \nLike 55% of us\, Giulia lives in a city. \nIt is predicted that by 2050\, almost 70% of us will live in a city – two thirds of the people on the planet. \nGiulia wonders if we’ll all fit. \nGiulia doubts it. \nThe world is undergoing the largest wave of urban growth in history. Cities are busy\, chaotic\, dirty\, and difficult. But they are also places of freedom\, possibilities\, and new experiences. \nCan we rethink how we feel in cities? In changing how we feel in a city\, can we reshape our communities? \nA one-of-a-kind cross-cultural project\, Persona Metropolitana was created in Rome\, where it enjoyed two sold-out runs in January and June this year. \nA dance show\, a live concert\, a poetry night\, a video art exhibition – Persona Metropolitana is a patchwork of life in different cities. It’s a rave in a metro and a party on the Luas. With innovative\, integrated video footage and original electronic music\, this will be an uncategorisable experience that seeks solace in community and creativity. \nIn cities we feel invisible\, Giulia thinks. \nOr free. \nSmock Alley Theatre Black Box\, Exchange St Lower\, Temple Bar\, Dublin 8 \nPreview: 19 September @ 21:15 // €11 \nShows: 20-23 September @ 21:15 // €12/14 \nMatinee: 23 September @ 13:30// €12/14 \nBook:  https://www.fringefest.com/festival/whats-on/persona-metropolitana \nTel: 1800 374 643 \nDuration: Approx. 60 mins \n  \nABOUT ANNACHIARA VISPI & GIULIA MACRÌ \nAnnachiara Vispi is a director and writer based between Dublin and Rome. SUMMARY:Sisters
DESCRIPTION:Sisters is the title of a groundbreaking new Irish musical that celebrates the pioneering women of the past\, while paying homage to those who lit the fire of change in Ireland. \nSet in 1971 against the backdrop of Catholic Ireland and the rise of the Irish Women’s Liberation Movement\, the show revolves around the story of a young single mother\, Bernadette Boland\, ostracised by her community\, as she embarks on her journey toward self-empowerment. \nLike many single mothers at the time\, Bernadette is shunned by her family and is invisible in society. Obtaining necessities like housing and employment proves extremely challenging. Meanwhile her sister Kathleen struggles with her new married life even as the youngest\, Noleen\, embraces the budding sexual revolution. \nBernadette’s life is changed when she gets a waitressing job at Gaj’s restaurant on Baggot Street. Margaret Gaj\, who owned Gaj’s on Baggot Street\, was one of the founders of the Irish Women’s Liberation Movement (IWLM)\, and her restaurant was a place frequented by the revolutionaries\, eccentrics and outsiders who clashed\, argued and rose up to envision a liberated and free Ireland. \nUnsurprisingly\, Bernadette’s encounters with the radical customers at Gaj’s bring upheaval and change to not only her own life\, but to her family and consequently the country. \nDescribed as “both entertaining and deeply moving”\, Sisters celebrates the pioneering women of the past while paying homage to those who lit the fire of change in Ireland. \n \nWritten and directed by Tracy Ryan with musical direction by Kaeylea B. VanKeith\, Sisters opens at the dlr Mill Theatre Dundrum at 7.30pm on Saturday\, September 24th\, and will run from October 4th-8th at 7.30pm each night with a matinée performance on 8th October at 2.30pm. Tickets €22-€25. \nFor further information visit milltheatre.ie
