SUMMARY:Oxide Ghosts: The Brass Eye Tapes
DESCRIPTION:Brass Eye still stands out as one of the most acerbically biting and caustically accurate slices of satire ever served on TV. Chris Morris skewed the celebrities with relish as they spouted ill-thought societal concerns. Phil Collins talked ‘Nonce Sense’ in Paedogeddon! Director Michael Cummings presents this 60-minute film\, a favourite episode vote + Q&A.

SUMMARY:Naomi Klein
DESCRIPTION:As always\, Klein is masterfully adept at intersecting and interconnecting crises. This time round with the publication of On Fire\, she’s got her detective board out\, pinning and threading connections between climate change\, the rise of white supremacy (climate barbarism)\, neo-liberalism\, the enhanced sense of nationalism and the war that is waged on our attention spans. “We have to get out of this ‘my crisis is bigger than your crisis: first we save the planet and then we fight poverty and racism\, and violence against women’. That doesn’t work.” She also calls into question the virtue signalling of individuals in this Goliath battle. Heady and necessary stuff from a seasoned social activist. \nNational Stadium\, Friday October 18\, €12-€35 \nPhoto; Kourosh Keshiri

SUMMARY:An Evening with Bob Woodward
DESCRIPTION:The legendary American investigative journalist is best known for teaming up with Carl Bernstein and exposing the Watergate scandal which led to the resignation of President Nixon. A prolific writer on US current affairs\, his most recent book Fear: Trump in the White House\, proved to be a penetrating portrait of a sitting United States president in the first year of an administration.  \nTonight\, in the company of our most distinguished commentator Fintan O’Toole\, Woodward will discuss the state of the US presidency. While this will largely entail preaching to the choir\, Woodward will hopefully have some insights into whether the 23 Democratic candidates who have declared for the 2020 presidency can actually produce one capable of dethroning Trump.

SUMMARY:A New Age of Activism
DESCRIPTION:What role does art play in activism? Should artists and designers be responsible for advocating social\, cultural and political issues? How can creativity be used as a vehicle for raising silenced voices and opinions to ultimately mobilise change?\n \nFrom manifestos for action to large-scale depictions of influential figures that ignite change through creativity\, A New Age of Activism will explore various modes\, materials and mediums employed to effectively communicate burning topics expressed by our generation. By merging art and creativity with activism\, we project these issues into public awareness but with shortening attention spans and over-saturated platforms\, messages must stand out to be seen and heard.\n\n \n\n\n \nSpeakers: Design and Material Culture Historian\, Dr Lisa Godson; Production and Costume Designer and Founder of The Costume Directory\, Sinéad O’Sullivan\, a member of Studio Such/Subset Collective and chaired by Michael McDermott\, editor of Totally Dublin.\n\nDate/time: 5.30-7pm on Wednesday 22 May\nWebsite listing: https://dublin.sciencegallery.com/events/2019/05/newageactivism\nEventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/a-new-age-of-activism-tickets-61686650432

SUMMARY:Bret Easton Ellis
DESCRIPTION:Ellis is often classified as an enfant terrible of the literary scene\, but he is also a 55-year-old man now so maybe that’s just a lazy analogy. Best known for American Psycho and its chilling protagonist Patrick Bateman\, Easton Ellis mostly hangs in LA these days presenting his Patreon-supported podcast. He’s here\, mainly\, to discuss White\, his first work of non-fiction\, which is being touted as “an incendiary polemic about this young century’s failings\, e-driven and otherwise…a denunciation of censorship\, particularly the self-inflicted sort committed in hopes of being ‘accepted\,’ and a bracing view of a life devoted to authenticity.” Once an enfant terrible\, always an…

SUMMARY:My Roots Are Showing
DESCRIPTION:In this panel discussion\, broadcaster and Sunday Business Post Arts Editor Nadine O’Regan will be joined by three writers and performers — Darren McGarvey\, Emmet Kirwan and Mango — who use their roots as inspiration for their creative work\, writing about hard-hitting issues and difficult truths. \nScottish rapper and writer Darren McGarvey (aka Loki The Scottish Rapper) recently won the prestigious Orwell Prize for his memoir Poverty Safari\, a blistering study of deprivation. A rapper-in-residence at Police Scotland’s Violence Reduction Unit\, McGarvey is described by Irvine Welsh as “an intellectual and spiritual rehab manual for the progressive left”. \nIrish rapper and poet Mango\, meanwhile\, has played to rapturous receptions at festivals from Forbidden Fruit to Electric Picnic alongside his producer/collaborator Mathman. Having first come to prominence as a member of hip-hop group The Animators\, Mango is a rapidly rising artist praised for his machine gun vocal delivery\, biting lyrics and proudly strong Dublin accent. \nEmmet Kirwan is an Irish performance poet\, actor and writer\, whose phrase ‘Stand in Awe of All Mna’ became a touchstone for the Repeal the Eighth movement\, and whose film Dublin Oldschool — a moving depiction of family relationships and drug use in Dublin — opened to major acclaim in Ireland earlier this year. \nTogether\, the panel will discuss how their backgrounds have influenced their work and tell the audience about the issues that resonate most with them in the Ireland and Britain of today. This panel discussion will be recorded for the My Roots are Showing podcast with Nadine O’Regan. \npart of the Festival of Politics

SUMMARY:Catalyst 3.0
DESCRIPTION:Ireland is a boiling pot of ideas just waiting to be translated into reality. SUMMARY:An Afternoon With Todd McGowan
DESCRIPTION:Capitalism\, Cops\, Psychoanalysis\, and Politics… What has Bladerunner 2049 got to do with Ideology? \n“Cinema is valuable not for its ability to make visible the hidden contours of our reality\, but for its ability to reveal what reality itself obscures – the dimension of fantasy.” – Todd McGowan\, 2012 \nDon’t miss the chance to find out when Todd McGowan\, associate professor of Film Studies at the University of Vermont gives two talks at DCU (School of Nursing\, Room HG22 on Saturday 19th May (2-6pm). Tickets here \nThe event which is entitled “An afternoon with Todd Mc Gowan” is arranged and presented by the organisers of the Irish Psychoanalytic film festival (now in its 9th year\, and hosting none other than the inimitable film\, psychoanalysis\, and politics philosopher Slavoj Žižek at its 10th festival in 2019). This will be the first opportunity to hear Todd McGowan speak in Ireland. Engaging\, witty\, and renowned for being a brilliant speaker\, Todd McGowan is – apart from Žižek – probably the most eminent and prolific writer at the intersections of psychoanalysis and cinema\, and psychoanalysis and politics at work today. At this event there will be the chance to hear Todd speak about psychoanalysis\, film\, and politics\, in two talks\, each of which will be followed by Q&A and discussion. The first of these will be on Paranoia and Populism\, and this will be followed by Between the Capitalist and the Cop – the Path to politics in Blade Runner 2049. \n \nTodd is described as “brilliantly lucid” in his interpretations of film text and psychoanalytic theory; and his books are regarded as “indispensable for anyone interested in the interpretation of films”. He has published over 32 books including The Real Gaze (2007)\, The Impossible David Lynch (2007)\, The Fictional Christopher Nolan (2012)\, Capitalism and Desire:The Psychic Cost of Free Markets (2016)\, and Only a Joke can Save us (2017). \nTogether with Ryan Engley\, Todd runs a podcast called Why Theory? a series which tackles such hot topics as Ideology\, The Oscars\, Freud\, CGI\, The Last Jedi\, and anxiety. Its film theory Jim but not as we know it! \nHere’s the link to episode 2 of the Podcast series to get a flavour of what to expect from Todd. \nhttps://player.fm/series/why-theory/ep-2-blade-runner-2049 \nIf you’re left feeling hungry for more of Todd\, or more on psychoanalysis and film\, Todd McGowan and two of the organisers of this event Olga Cox Cameron and Carol Owens will be speaking at the Freud/Lynch Behind the Curtain extravaganza which is a 2 day conference exploring the cinema of David Lynch through a psychoanalytic lens in London the following weekend (26-27th May). \nMore info and tickets here

SUMMARY:Coffee Culture: Resilience
DESCRIPTION:coffee|culture#3 : Resilience \nThis January\, coffee|culture is inviting three creatives who have used their artistic output as a form of expression enabling them to thrive. Although the creative industry can be a challenging and daunting place\, creatives are resilient and bounce back from obstacles; be it diminishing arts grants\, red tape regulations or burnout syndrome. \nGiven the nature of this event\, we wanted to give back by supporting a social enterprise that specialises in intervention-preventative\, wellness workshops for the youth of Ireland. All profits from this event will be donated to Soar\, a collective movement that empowers young people to believe in themselves and fulfil their true potential. \nSpeakers: \nShane O Malley\nShane O’Malley is among a group of contemporary artists who have emerged from Ireland’s graffiti subculture to work in mediums of paint\, murals and art installations. Shane uses vibrant art pieces as a form of self expression to visualise his mind\, inner conflicts and mental health. \nAoife McElwain\nAoife McElwain is a food writer and creative events planner. Aoife has excelled in the creative industry through her bustling career as one half of the recipe series Forkful TV\, and as the programme curator and community manager for Turkfest; a community-led arts and music festival based on Inishturk. \nAs well as hosting the illustrious Sing Along Social events\, Aoife is just about to launch her first book aimed at providing respite to the “always-on culture of busyness”. \nSoar\nSoar was founded in 2012 by Tony Griffin and Karl Swan. Soar is a collective movement that believes that there is greatness within all young people. They achieve this by creating and delivering early intervention-preventative\, wellness workshops for young people aged 12 to 18 years from all backgrounds. Their workshops empower young people to thrive\, believe in themselves and fulfil their true potential. \nBailies Coffee Roasters\nBailies are joining us from Belfast to provide a complimentary cupping demonstration presenting their speciality blend. They source and roast Fair Trade\, Rainforest Alliance and Organic coffees\, and develop working relationships with ethical suppliers who have strong focus on sustainability for local farmers and growers. \ncoffee|culture is a new series of creative talks that occupy Dublin’s best speciality cafés on one morning per month. Each venue is significant for its status on the Dublin City Coffee Map\, presenting a snapshot of a truly vibrant and bustling coffee scene of over 30 cafés\, each offering something unique and beautiful to Dublin’s fair city. \nTalks have been designed to provide a stimulating and inspiring start to the day\, ranging in theme from architecture to food writing\, set-design to performance art and everything in between. Speakers have been curated for their contribution to Ireland’s cultural landscape and their motivation for creating innovative work in challenging times. \ncoffee|culture is a collaborative event organised in partnership with Above the Fold.

SUMMARY:Storm(zy) Brewing
DESCRIPTION:If there happened to be a mural of the year awards ceremony\, then the one of Stormzy by the Subset collective in Smithfield would be on the podium. It truly has a transformative effect on the still grey-tinged surrounds but it may be gone by December 15th. Dublin City Council want it gone as it was erected without planning permission. Subset can’t afford to fight it. The mural is on the Linders building. Jonathan Melvin\, the property manager for the building has no beef with it. “It’s a massive shame for the mural to come down\, it brightened up an otherwise dull street.” C’mon DCC\, let some common sense prevail.

SUMMARY:Celebrating Poetry: 10 years of Poetry Aloud
DESCRIPTION:Poets from W. B. Yeats to Seamus Heaney have used the National Library’s reading rooms\, and the literary papers of many poets are part of the library’s manuscripts collections. Our printed collection includes the work of well-known and lesser known poets. The creativity and legacy of W. B. Yeats is celebrated in the popular exhibition Yeats: the life and work of William Butler Yeats.  \nPoetry Aloud is an All-Ireland poetry speaking competition for post-primary schools organised by the NLI and Poetry Ireland. The idea originated in Wesley College\, Dublin with English teacher Niall MacMonagle. The first national poetry speaking competition was held in 2006 and coincided with the opening of the Yeats exhibition. The National Library and Poetry Ireland jointly organised Yeats Aloud in 2006. \nIn 2007\, the competition became Poetry Aloud and has been running since as an all-Ireland poetry speaking competition for post primary schools on the island of Ireland.  The NLI and Poetry Ireland have worked in collaboration on Poetry Aloud for the past 10 years. \nTo celebrate 10 years of Poetry Aloud as a national competition\, join Professor Margaret Kelleher\, Chair of Anglo-Irish Literature and Drama\, UCD for a short talk followed by a conversation with some former winners who will read their own favourite poems.  Niall MacMonagle will introduce the evening. \nAll welcome!
